DAILY Broncos Training Camp Report (1 Viewer)

The news on Brandon Marshall varies depending on who you talk to. Some people say he’ll be out just a few days, others say that he could miss over half of training camp – and maybe more. The buzz around Marshall was not good, as many people feel that while talented, Marshall may never put it together to be a consistent WR in the NFL.
Say it aint so, Cec !Marshall's durability has dogged him for two out of two NFL training camps. I'm definitely starting to get uncomfortable about his ability to stay healthy, although I still feel certain about his talent and ability to eventually be among the best WRs in the NFL.
Yeah I mentioned this earlier in the Marshall thread that he was a bigger risk then people were thinking.
the knee injury last year really sapped him of the momentum he had built, but he seemed to get the "eye of the tiger" back by the end of year. I wasnt aware of the severity of the latest injury until he aggravated it at the last minicamp. He didnt have major durability issues in college, so I am bit  but also
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!

Great stuff -- as always!

Hey, are you all going to do Audible shows on these camp days? I've got some of your quotes and links over on my blog, but I would love to send bronco fans to the podcast page if you're doing them.

Thanks for the great camp coverage!

Apparently Hixon dislocated his shoulder. WR depth is getting razor thin with Marshall, Rod, and now Hixon out.

I'm beginning to think Walker and Stokley need a bump in their projections.

Graham and Scheffler too. Kircus is solid he can be serviceable in a pinch.

Cecil Sapp had another solid day. More signature power moves from this guy. He even lowered his shoulder on Champ one time, and that was not well received. I love watching him run the football, and have been a long time fan – and not just because we share the same first name. Shanahan is impressed by his #2 back as well: “Cecil is a guy that can do about everything—play fullback, tailback and special teams. He is a natural athlete that works extremely hard and gives you everything that he’s got. It is kind of nice to see him carry the ball a little bit more. Last year, he averaged over seven yards a carry in a very limited role, but he is going to help us out this year. We bring all these guys in because we don’t have anything etched in stone. Obviously we know who are starters are but even they may fall off the cliff with age or effort. I think we have enough depth where someone like Cecil can come in and push that type of starter.”
:excited:

Is Sapp really going to be the number 2 back? I mean the guy is 29 years old and has carried the ball 31 times in his career. He is a special teams player.

I think that is more of an indication of how much they plan to use Henry.

Why couldn't he be #2? Because he doesn't have enough tread on the tires? That doesn't make much sense. He just hasn't had the chance. He can handle it. :banned:

actually he has been playing FB. Look at Mike Anderson if you want a fair comparison IMO.

Editing some Audible shows to hit the airwaves - but I have the Day 3 report right here:

Everyone was crazy from the heat, but the Broncos managed to have 2 productive practices under the Colorado sun. Let’s get right to it.

QBs

If today was a football game, one could say that Jay Cutler had a rough first half. The morning session saw Jay miss the mark on a few of his throws. The main problem with the aerial attack was dropped passes by the receivers. It’s hard for the offense to get in a rhythm if passes are hitting the ground. This afternoon Jay looked like his old self. His passes were on target again, and his receivers were hanging on to the football.

Patrick Ramsey had his best day of camp today. It wasn’t a great day, but it was his best. He still looks tentative out there, like he is thinking too much. Coach Shanahan had this to say about the competition in training camp: “We’ve got some great competition. We’ve got a lot of guys that have a lot of ability, and a lot of these younger guys that haven’t been with us are getting some practice time. So in this short time, we’ll see who steps up.”

Darrell Hackney made some poor decisions with the football. He has a rocket arm but almost zero accuracy.

RBs

Travis Henry continued to look great. I must admit that his pad speed has really surprised me. It continues to surprise the defense as well. Henry makes nice cuts, and knows exactly when to bounce the ball back inside or outside. Timing in this zone blocking is key, and Henry does a good job of setting up the defenders on the second level.

Cecil Sapp had a good day. I love his power and determination. Not much of a gamebreaker, but his game is solid all the way around.

Mike Bell is back to looking like the Mike Bell from last year. His fresh legs are gone, and he’s back to having only one speed. He does have a ton of heart and will continue to put up a good fight for the #2 job.

Andre Hall had a few good runs. Good instincts for running the football.

Selvin Young had better say goodbye to his college teammate Tim Crowder. Young should be heading home soon.

WRs

Javon Walker had a solid day. He is consistently making catches with his arms outstretched and his hands in the proper position. I like the way that he plucks the ball out of the air. It wasn’t a really good day for the WRs, but Jwalk was again the leader of the pack.

Brandon Stokley had the morning off. He came back in the afternoon and did what he does best – make plays. He is a very sure handed receiver and is proving to be a reliable target for Cutler. With the injury to Brandon Marshall it appears that the coaches have all the confidence in Stokley. Can he hold onto the #2 job when Marshall returns?

David Kircus looks the same every day. Drop easy passes, make the spectacular ones. It’s very frustrating because he clearly has great athleticism. The Broncos need the rest of the receiving corps to stay healthy. Coach noticed Kircus out there today: “David shows flashes. He’s a little inconsistent. He drops the ball a few too many times, but he does come up with the big play. That consistency dictates whether or not you get a chance to play come game time. But David does show flashes and hopefully that consistency will improve and if it does improve he will have a chance to be on the football team.”

Domenik Hixon had a slight separation of the shoulder, but shouldn’t miss that much time. He didn’t have his best day of camp before the injury. I love his speed and his route running, let’s hope that he can stay healthy this year.

Brian Clark made a few plays. I have usually been pretty hard on him, because he has never filled his potential. Whether it was at NC State or here with the Broncos. The competition at the WR position should come down to the wire, here’s what coach had to say: “They get an opportunity to show what they can do. That’s what these guys are looking for. They have a lot of talent or else they wouldn’t be here, and some guys are building a really good standing in the National Football League. I’m not sure they can do it on game time, and I’m not sure they can do it consistently in practice. There’s a concentration level that’s stemming from the meetings and obviously the practice field, and we’ll find out in the next few days if they’re able to do that. But they are getting some reps that they normally wouldn’t get with a few guys being out.”

Quincy Morgan stood out a couple of times. He’s just not tough enough in my opinion.

ROD SMITH was out on the field jogging. That is a good sign, as it was only a month ago that he was only running in a pool. Everyone is rooting for Rod, and the Broncos could still use him.

TEs

Daniel Graham had another good day catching the ball. He is a very strong player, but don’t expect much work from him after the catch or down the field. Nothing wrong with that, any QB would love a target as reliable as Graham. Coach is pleased with what he’s seen so far: “I can’t say I’m more impressed, but one of the reasons we signed him to the contract we did was because we liked the way he played and we liked the way he handled himself. You just don’t know for sure until the guy comes into camp and see how he works and how he attacks the meeting rooms and how he attacks the football field. You can say he’s a pro’s pro. He comes here to work every day and has a lot of discipline and he’s practiced quite well.”

Nate Jackson made a few good plays.

OTHER CAMP NOTES:

Ian Gold had back spasms today, but is expected back tomorrow.

The defense is really looking strong up front.

Nick Ferguson had another good day, and Dre Bly looks real comfortable out there.

gah, I need to stop reading this or I am going to wind up with an all-Bronco FF teamNi ...
Henry in the first, Javon in the third, Cutler in the seventh, Graham in the 13th, Stokely in the 14th, Elam in the 15th, Denver D in the 8th. (championship)** as long as you get a good RB2 in the second and Houshamazilly in the 4th *Edit: You may have to go Walker in the 2nd and Housh in the 3rd especially in 14 team leagues.

I'm having a love affair with Daniel Graham. Is is consensus opinion that he will have better fantasy prospects this season than Scheffler?

Cecil my man, keep up the excellent work.

just starting day four report, some great defensive notes from Sean Baca.

I have to record a show, but I will get this posted ASAP

I'm in dire need of my Brandon Marshall fix , any up to date word on his return?

Jim on demand: Marshall matters

By Jim Armstrong

Denver Post Staff Writer

Pick a year, any year, and there's a certain sameness to training camp. Every summer, players emerge and players regress, story lines develop and some issues become bigger than others.

So what's the No. 1 issue of Camp Shanny '07? That would be Brandon Marshall's continued absence.

This being Jay Cutler's first camp as the starting quarterback, the coaches wanted him to get as much work as possible with the No. 1 offense. But as long as Marshall isn't in uniform, the No. 1 unit won't be on the field.

With Rod Smith sidelined — it's a virtual given he'll open the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list — Marshall's development is more crucial than ever to the Broncos' big picture.

So what happens? Marshall joins Smith on PUP with a strained quadriceps.

With each passing day, Marshall's absence becomes a bigger concern. The coaches projected him to become a go-to guy for Cutler in his second NFL season. Now the powers that be are questioning whether he can play through injuries.

"There are two sides to the game," Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist said. "There's a physical side to the game and there's a mental side to the game. And you've got to be able to master both of them. There have been a lot of upside physical receivers who never quite accomplished what people expected them to because of the mental side."

Marshall said before camp that he hoped to be on the field in a week to 10 days. That needs to happen, the sooner the better. Brandon Stokley's impressive performance has enabled the coaches to breathe a sigh of relief, but the Broncos are a better team if Marshall is healthy and productive.

"We're counting on Brandon," said Sundquist. "We put a lot of time and effort into coaching him, getting him ready, but ultimately on a Mike Shanahan team you've got to go out on the field and perform. You're never going to be a finely tuned Ferrari quarter to quarter to quarter. At some point in time, your timing is a little off, there's a little wear on the tread and your oil is going to be low. It's never going to be 100 percent."

just got done recording another episode of The Audible. Before I put my editing hat on I will post my report.

I have FOUR pages of notes from Big Sean on the defensive side of the ball. I will wrap that into a nice report as well.

:goodposting:

It’s the day before Bloom comes to Denver. I’m sure excited to have him here and get his takes on this team. Big Sean was a madman with taking the defensive notes, so mad props to my brother from another mother.

QBs

Jay Cutler looks to be very comfortable with Javon Walker. He will check down to Walker and has a nice rapport with Javon. Had a couple of deep passes to Javon, one that went for six points. Javon had some nice things to say about Cutler after the morning practice “We had a whole offseason together. Obviously (with Cutler) having started the last five games, right now, it feels like we have played 16 games already. The timing is there. We just have to make sure that we get a lot of the other guys on the same page and go from there.” Developing a nice rhythm with Stokley, but it’s mostly on shorter stuff. He looks great in play action, and I love his footwork when he needs to step up and buy time in the pocket. Very subtly he can move the safety coverage with just a head or hand fake – he’s showing veteran presence. He has fun with his teammates and they really respond to him.

Patrick Ramsey had another bad day. Ramsey – you must have an inner clock!!!!!!!!!!!! He holds on to the ball way too long.

Darrell Hackney looked strong fundamentally today. Showed good timing on deep routes and fade stops. Still confused when working against the defense.

Preston Parsons didn’t have a horrible day. Threw a pass right to Gerard Warren. Looks flustered when going against the defense.

RBs

Travis Henry still looked good. The defense is learning and starting to shut off the backside lanes that were wide open just yesterday. Looked good as a receiver out of the backfield. Has some work to do in pass protection – and he was coached up today on just that.

Cecil Sapp caused a lot of contact in the hole. Caught a great play action fake that went for big yards (50 plus). Went head to head with Nate Webster and knocked his helmet off for the hit of the day.

Mike Bell is a very willing inside runner. He still struggles with vision. Too often he is content to lower his head, when he should have his head on a swivel. Unlike Sapp who creates contact, Bell seems to absorb contact – and the D was punishing him. Looks good if there is a hole. Still doesn’t seem comfortable in zone blocking. Here’s what coach Shanahan had to say about Bell: “Mike is running better than he was a year ago. He is a making better decisions, and he is a little bit more under control. He is using his instincts. Sometimes, Mike gets a little bit too excited and slips while trying to make a cut. Things like that usually come with confidence.”

Andre Hall needs to be more patient as a runner. Looks great getting to the edges of the defense, but he needs to sell it better. The defense almost expects him to bounce it outside. He’s not a great inside runner, but you need to bust it inside before you can break it outside. Love his start/stop ability.

Selvin Young had his first good day of camp – and it was a really good day. He showed more fire when running. Great one cut ability and he ran with a good pad level all day. If nothings there he will lower his head and push the pile. Don’t pack your bags yet Selvin!

WRs

Javon Walker is the man. Plain and simple. He is playing like the elite receiver that he is. He beat Dre Bly regularly and got deep better than any other receiver. Showing great chemistry with Cutler. When asked if he was the Broncos go-to receiver, Walker said: “I hope so. Obviously there are plays that were made last year, plays that were made even before I got here. It’s just about how you use everyone’s talents. The coaches can see what I can do, so there becomes a point in time during games where a different player will have to step up. A receiver is only as good as the guy on the opposite side of them that continues to try to make plays.”

Brandon Stokley looked quick in and out of breaks. Was willing to go to the ground to catch any pass. Will put his body on the line to make the play. Made almost every catch thrown his way. Corners tried to push him around, but Stokley responded well. Javon grew up in the same part of Louisiana and had this to say about his new teammate: “You know we played against each other in high school and have a lot of the same mutual friends. I feel like I’m at home when he’s here.”

Domenik Hixon came back to work today. He really shouldn’t have. You could see that he was really shy to go over the middle. Still showed good separation. Coach had the following to say: “When guys get hurt, it really hurts their chances of making the team. For a guy like Domenik to come in after a first-degree shoulder separation is pretty impressive. He worked through it, and that is what you are hoping a guy is going to do.”

David Kircus had another up and down day. Showed good recognition when Hackney broke the pocket. Kircus sat down in the open spot and made the tough catch. He followed that up with another drop on the sideline where he just stabbed one hand at the ball.

Brian Clark struggles with physical corner play. Champ OWNED him out of bounds in bump and run coverage.

David Terrell responded well to physical play. Dropped easy passes in drill work.

Quincy Morgan – see David Terrell.

Rod Smith looks like he’ll make the team – or maybe go to IR, Coach said this about Rod: “With a guy like Rod Smith, what he has played and what he has done, it is an easy decision. Rod is going to do everything he can to get back. Physically, he is not able to go. One of the reasons he didn’t play up to his ability last year was because he was injured. Rod didn’t want to let the team down. When the doctor looked at his hip, they told him he shouldn’t have played. Rod is so tough mentally that he wanted to play even though he was injured. I think Rod knows that for him to be able to play at the level he can play at, he has to be healthy. It may take all though preseason or even into the middle of the regular season. I told Rod that he doesn’t have a target date, he is on this football team and I told him to get well.”

Brandon Marshall had better get back on the field. Shanahan commented on his talented but oft-injured WR: “He did pretty well on the treadmill the other day. I told Brandon that we can’t waste repetition on a guy that keeps getting hurt. He is not out there and we need guys that can stay healthy. He has a lot of ability and he has a great upside. We will have to wait until he is healthy to see what he can do and if he can stay healthy.”

TEs

Daniel Graham is a physical beast. He was owning OLBs in blocking. They were jumping his short routes in passing situations. He needs to do a better job of route running. Came down with the football on a great catch where he had to twist and reach over his head.

Andre Hall needs to be more patient as a runner. Looks great getting to the edges of the defense, but he needs to sell it better. The defense almost expects him to bounce it outside. He’s not a great inside runner, but you need to bust it inside before you can break it outside. Love his start/stop ability.

The Selvin Young sleeper express lives for another day. :excited: I have to wonder if either Andre or Selvin will wind up on the practice squad.

I love all Denver backup RBs.

I'm not going to bump up Scheffler till he gets on the practice field. He is still on the PUP.
we need to put to rest this myth that the TE in Denver is `fantasy gold`..since Sharpe retired, we've heard about 15 guys who were supposed to be the next big thing. Hasn't happened yet, and probably won't. Putzier.Graham.Scheffler.Carswell.Chamberlain.Desmond Clark.etc. I'm sure we can work Kevin Bacon into that rotation somewhow... its a waste of time to even consider a Denver TE as anything more than an extra lineman/blocker..they're useless..Denver isn't even as good for RB's as it used to be, but I'm going to give Trav Henry the benefit of the doubt.the RBBC Shanny has tried since Portis left, has backfired. He'll now revert to a 1-back deal, where that guy rushes for about 1500-1600 yards and 15 tds..Henry is MONEY this season! :excited:

I think putting Scheffler in that list is a bit premature. He was a rookie last year and was very raw coming out of college. He played very well once Cutler started last year and averaged 11.4 PPG in FBG scoring in the last 4 games. Gates averaged less than 10 over the course of the year. I'm not comparing the two, but using the Gates numbers to show just how impressive Scheffler was. He finished 20th in overall fantasy points last year and considering he didn't play much until Cutler started, those are great numbers. I was very impressed watching him play. He has great hands and athletic ability, and moves very well for a player his size. He had a great chemistry with Cutler, especially in the red zone. He should be a prime red zone target for Cutler for a long time. I really can't see how he gets classified with the other TEs you just listed.

Anthony, are you worried about his prospects this year or do you expect him to attain the same value even with Graham eating into his snaps?

I'm not Anthony but I'll take a crack at this one.If you choose to interpret some roster moves and depth chart issues in a certain way, you will start to believe that Denver is going to run two TE sets quite a bit this year.

1) Cecil Sapp is moved from FB to RB. This leaves Kyle Johnson and Troy Fleming as the only remaining FBs on the roster. With Travis Henry more of a bowling ball than Tatum Bell was, we'll see less FBs on the field than in the previous couple of years.

2) The WR corps is deep, but ailing. Unless they all get healthy quickly, Denver will be hard pressed to put three or four viable receiving options on the field at one time.

3) Cutler is developing nicely, but is still a bit raw. Having two check down options at TE is going to be one helluva safety value for the second year signal caller. We've already seen his affinity for Scheffler, and it sounds like he's growing comfortable throwing to Graham as well.

4) The two TE set was a staple of Shanahan's best offensive teams. Granted, there isn't a Shannon Sharpe type game changer at the position, but Sharpe also had Chamberlain, Clark, and Carswell playing significant time alongside him.

So I think its entirely possible that Graham not only doesn't substantially eat into Scheffler's snap, he might even make Scheffler more of a threat as a pure receiving TE. This all assumes Scheffler returns quickly and completely from his foot injury, of course.

:pickle: Great points made about Cutlers inexperience and youth, and he had great chemistry with Scheffler last year.

I see Scheffler ranking in the 12-15 range.

AP reports LB Warrick Holdman taken to hospital after big hit:

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos linebacker Warrick Holdman was carted off the field and taken by ambulance to a hospital Thursday after he appeared to injure his head or neck.

There was no immediate word on the extent of his injury, although he was moving his arms and legs.

Holdman appeared to hit the crown of his helmet on another player's helmet and crumpled to the grass midway through the morning workout. He was rolled over onto his back after a minute, but stayed down for eight minutes.

His teammates gathered around him as he was strapped to a headboard and carted off the field to a waiting ambulance.

Holdman is a ninth-year pro in his first season in Denver after spending the last two years in Washington. He was working with the starters at strong side linebacker Thursday. He's among a handful of players who are vying for the position in one of the most heated competitions at camp.

More from Andrew Mason's Blog:
A player wearing jersey No. 56, momentarily motionless on the field before regaining feeling and motion throughout his body. For safety John Lynch and others who were in uniform and on the sidelines last Dec. 3, the sight of Warrick Holdman prone and receiving medical attention provided a harrowing flashback to when Holdman’s predecessor in the 56 jersey was in the same position.

“I thought about that as he was down,” Lynch said. “Thank God Al was all right, and let’s just say our prayers that Warrick’s fine … There’s nothing worse than seeing one of your teammates down. It brings back memories of our buddy Al last year, and it’s the worst thing in football in my mind.”

Holdman was injured on a play early in the team segment of the practice after appearing to collide with running back Mike Bell near the east sideline. He lay on the grass and was eventually able to move his arms and legs, but was nevertheless immobilized, as is standard operating procedure for spinal-cord trauma.

Like Wilson eight months earlier, Holdman left the field on a motorized cart. He was subsequently transferred into a waiting ambulance.

“He went numb for about 30 or 40 seconds out there and he got his feeling back — which is a good sign,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “I don’t know for sure, but normally when somebody gets that feeling back, it’s usually positive.”

The Broncos couldn’t finish without another injury, however, as Demetrin Veal was poked in the eye during the “move-the-ball” segment in the final moments of practice.

“He got a good shot to the eye,” Shanahan said. “He should be all right, but it was quite painful. He got it pretty square (in the eye).”

Although they were quite shaken, the Broncos managed to eventually regain their composure and continue the last 25 minutes of practice after Holdman’s injury. The energy and mood on the field and among the fans, however, had clearly dissipated.

“It’s tough, but I think that’s something that you’ve got to be able to do as a football player — getting your focus back,” Lynch said. “That dampened the mood a little bit, but you’ve got to finish.”
First off, let's hope Warrick is alright and the trip to the hospital was precautionary. That said, it doesn't sound too good for a guy who was getting some first-team reps at SLB. Look for Nate Webster and D.D. Lewis to get more work in Holdman's (hopefully short) absence.

I really hope Holdman is alright. It looks like SLB is starting to rival WR in terms of number of injuries- hopefully this is just a training camp thing and not indicative of things to come this season.

Apparently Hixon dislocated his shoulder. WR depth is getting razor thin with Marshall, Rod, and now Hixon out.I'm beginning to think Walker and Stokley need a bump in their projections.
Graham and Scheffler too. Kircus is solid he can be serviceable in a pinch.
I'm not going to bump up Scheffler till he gets on the practice field. He is still on the PUP.

He'll now revert to a 1-back deal, where that guy rushes for about 1500-1600 yards and 15 tds..Henry is MONEY this season! :lmao:
First off, Denver TEs *ARE* potential fantasy gold, if one guy can ever grab the job. The problem isn't that Denver doesn't use its TEs, the problem is that they've been TEBC since Sharpe retired. In 2000, Desmond Clark/Byron Chamberlain/Dwayne Carswell combined for 98/1117/7. In 2001, without Sharpe, the Denver TEs went for 88/891/10. In 2002-2003, Sharpe was back and TE production as a whole actually DECLINED (82/875/5 and 72/857/9). In 2004, Denver's TEs combined for 66/805/7. 2005 was a very down year for Denver's TEs (62/675/4), but a large part of that is because Shanahan instead used Fullback Kyle Johnson where he normally used his TEs (17/160/5 receiving for Johnson). Last year was a HORRIBLE year for the Denver TEs (38/469/6), although it was Denver's worst passing season across the board in Shanny's tenure. I still think that Denver's TE position is a sleeping giant, and if one guy ever gets even 80% of the opportunities, like Sharpe did, that guy is going to be a stud. The Graham signing has dampened my enthusiasm considerably, though, since the likelihood of one guy getting 80% of the opps just fell through the floor.

This along with the Walker news only supports the idea that Marshall is overrated.
