Defective Sunscreen (1 Viewer)

I'm a daily user of sunscreen.  Last week I purchased Coppertone Sport 70 SPF at Walmart.  Now it feels like my neck is getting burnt and I'm sun sick every evening.  My last bottle was Coppertone Sport 50 SPF. I think I'm applying the same amount and rubbing it in the same way.  The 70 SPF has the same ingredients with the addition of oxybenzone.  Has anyone ever come across a defective bottle or is this likely user error?

As I recall, lower SPF lasts longer.  Also, I do mineral only sunscreen.  I don't like the chemical kind.
Maybe I should switch over to a mineral sunscreen.  I believe it is the oxybenzone causing my bad reaction.  It has been linked to a lot of bad things.  Trying to avoid cancer and aging from the sun and instead I'm getting both from my sunscreen.  Thanks Coppertone Sport 70!

Do you recommend a particle mineral brand?  I'm seeing lots of 3 oz bottles that sell for $10+ whereas zinc oxide can be bought in bulk at $3/lb.  People don't want white cast which is probably what lead to the mineral sunscreen SPF scandal last year.

edit: Purito, a popular Korean sunscreen is actually a chemical sunscreen.  Surely there are other brands not living up to their claimed SPF.  I do wonder how effective a mineral sunscreen can be if it's not leaving a white cast, though.

They say anything over SPF 30 is all just marketing.  Very minimal benefits of anything over 30.

try rubbing it a different way

Spent 10 days in Florida, 90 and sunny every day.  Only used Coppertone Sport 15 spray.  Did a light spray every hour or two and never got burned at all.  2 spray cans lasted the whole trip.  Plus I was golfing some days and I hate having my hands all greasy.  So the spray worked perfect.

I play a lot of golf and softball in a sunny state so I also apply sunscreen often. I've had some bottles that seem less effective than others.

Best I've ever used in terms of effectiveness and comfort is the Neutrogena Sport Face.

Oxybenzone and other similar products that they use to boost spf to infinity are crap. Mineral stuff is quite a bit better but more annoying to use.

Any tips on how to best rub it in for effectiveness?

If you want the good stuff you have to drop ship out of the EU.  Nothing coming out of the US compares to their stuff.

They have 2-3 different photo stable non mineral products that are superior to anything the US has on the market.

The best part is it's nearly free.  I get literally liters of the stuff for $50 bucks a liter after paying for drop ship then set it out by the pool for anyone that wants some that stops by.

Why don't they just make everything SPF 100? Is there a downside to too much? More expensive ingredients?
probably the same reason they make regular strength cough/cold medicine vs. the extra strength.   Cuz, you know, you wouldn't want to fight your cold symptoms at max effectiveness!

tldr:  Check your sunscreen, avoid oxybenzone!  All these chemicals are probably harmful.  They enter your bloodstream and linger for weeks, but oxybenzone is currently regarded as the worst.  In addition to irritating the eyes and skin of many people, oxybenzone is also a hormone disruptor.

I squeezed some cream from an old bottle of Coppertone 50, rubbed it in real good, and had no issues today.  Walmart allowed me to return the Coppertone 70.  I explained my reasons but that was unnecessary.  The customer service rep made the return without saying a single word.  I used to assume these awkward encounters were caused by me being an overly talkative weirdo but I now think it may be because of my sunburn.

They did have Blue Lizard and it's reasonably priced for a mineral sunscreen but, for now, I decided to stick with the chemicals that my skin is familiar with.  Seeing a new bottle design on the Coppertone Sport 50 gave me pause and I don't like that they have no safety seal or packaging.  Are they going to put that nearly full bottle of Coppertone 70 back on the shelf?  Oh, well.  If I have problems with this new bottle, I'll chat with the customer service guy, again.

Stay safe, folks.  Hydrate and rub the lotion.
