$7 million is something I could *maybe* tolerate over three seasons for Delhomme, but that amount just for this year is certifiably crazy. This means, combined with the money from Carolina, Jake Delhomme is making $19 million this year alone. Chew on that folks.Seriously, did Holmgren check his stat line from last year? 2000 yards, 55% completion, 8 TDs 18 INTs. Attention Mike Holmgren: this isn't 2004.$7 Million dollars for Delhomme? Oh my God, was he laughing when he signed the contract?
What made Jake very good (he used to be far better than "serviceable") was his smart decision making and ability to take care of the ball. There's a chance whatever just happened to him in CAR was mental. Maybe a change of scenery fixes something.I for one think Brady is better than Jake. Silly me.Point taken.Do you have a couple of days free? Not sure why CLE fans are so upset. While I'm not a Brady Quinn enthusiast, Jake is horrible.......and Wallace is nothing to be excited about. The only thing that made Jake look serviceable was Steve Smith. What offensive firepower does Cleveland have again?
That said, $7 million a year is insane. Who the hell did CLE think they were bidding against?Maybe. I saw Quinn progressing, during the season last year, for the first time. He started looking more comfortable and less mechanical.Or maybe I was seeing things. I dunno...I see an upgrade at QB for the Browns over the past several seasons.
Couldn't disagree more.He goes from throwing to Steve Smith to throwing to.....? Defenses geared entirely to stop D.Williams and J.Steward are now going to be able to focus more on stopping the pass. His HC was firmly behind him for a long, long time in CAR even while Delhomme was imploding in a much, much better situation. Jake has thrown 42 INT's in his last 43 starts with a lot less pressure than he'll have in CLE to create his own offense. I think players can benefit from a fresh start but I'm not nearly as convinced 35yo players benefit nearly as much.I think Jake Delhomme is definately an upgrade at QB for the next year or two over Quinn and Anderson. We may laugh at Delhomme but I've always been reasonably impressed with Delhomme's competitiveness.I think the change of scenery will help Delhomme.
I live in N.C. and watched most of his games over the past couple of years. His arm is gone.He got picked off a ton last year not only for bad decision making but he can't throw NFL QB throws any more. What made Jake very good (he used to be far better than "serviceable") was his smart decision making and ability to take care of the ball. There's a chance whatever just happened to him in CAR was mental. Maybe a change of scenery fixes something.![]()

That Cleveland didn't have a NFL calibre QB on its roster when he joined the team?Unbelievable! What in the world is Holmgren thinking?Like all of the Browns moves this offseason except this oneGod I wonder how much $$$ we're forking over for this guy. I'm sure he's being paid to start.I'm afraid to ask CAR homers to chime in on this...
Adam_Schefter For those wondering about Brady Quinn's future in Cleveland, consider: Browns paying Jake Delhomme starter money -- $7 million this season.![]()
So what exactly are you disagreeing with? I'm saying Cleveland is better at QB than they were last year. Players can benefit from a change in scenery even at 35 years of age, look at Kurt Warner to Arizona and Brett Farve to Minnesota. Delhomme isn't in their class but your statement of not being convinced because of the age of the person is unfounded. Delhomme may not benefit from the change of scenery but there are QB's that have been older than him that have done just fine doing the same thing.Couldn't disagree more.He goes from throwing to Steve Smith to throwing to.....? Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Delhomme was only "astoundingly bad" last season.People in the Carolinas are laughing it up right now. Delhomme has been astoundingly bad for the past couple seasons. The fact that they want him to start, much less want to pay him starter money is mind boggling.
They still don't.That Cleveland didn't have a NFL calibre QB on its roster when he joined the team?Unbelievable! Delhomme is terrible at this stage of his career. His arm is shot and I can't wait until December to see the quails he will be throwing when the weather gets bad. Browns had a press conference today and The Walrus said that Jake is a proven qb and he only had one bad year.So what exactly are you disagreeing with? Yeah, I don't understand this. I'd think Holmgren has done enough in the league to warrant allowing him to actually see the opening day kickoff before burying him. Why?BusterTBronco said:Just a horrible move by a horrible franchise. I'm not shocked that another team has signed him. Jake is a great leader and not every game he played last year was horrible. He stated after being released that he tried too hard not to mistakes last season, and that caused him not to be himself which is a gunslinger. Maybe that is true. Jake was a good quarterback and a great leader for the Panthers for a long time, and maybe he can get some of that mojo back in a new setting. If he does start for the Browns next season I hope he does well (except for when he plays the Panthers).BusterTBronco said:He's not an upgrade over what you had last year--he's worse. If that was trying too hard not to make mistakes, he might hit 30 INTs if he doestn't try. Let's not forget that he was sack 23 times and fumble 6 times to go with the 18 INTs in 321 attempts. Moore had better numbers across the board with Gross missing a good bit of that time.I like the guy, but he's toast. It's pretty obvious to everyone except the browns or their die hard fans that the tank is empty on Jake. The guy had over a 2-1 TD-Int ratio. Only 8 tds to 18 ints and only completed 55% his passes with the league's best ground game supporting him while throwing to Steve Smith. His elbow is shot and he's finished. I don't get what Holmgren saw in his video analysis of Jake that made it appear he could ever be successful again as an NFL starter. It is mind boggling. His arm strength became stronger after his surgery. What seemed to be different this past year is he was inaccurate in his throws. His elbow is shot and he's finished. He's got a gunslinger mentality and his arm can't cover that check anymore.
Not in the games I watched. He couldn't throw an out pattern to save his life. Just wait until he tries and throws in bad weather in Clev, Pitt and Cincy. His arm strength became stronger after his surgery. You must have not watched many games. I've seen every Panther game, and Delhomme definitely had more juice in his arm post tommy john surgery, but his accuracy was off a lot last season. Not in the games I watched. I watched every Panthers game last yr due to owning D-Will and J-Stew. If his arm strength improved than that does not say much for his arm strength before the surgery because his throws to me had no zip and were all over the place on top of very poor decision making. Not a very good combo for a qb especially one making the coin Jake made last yr and this yr.You must have not watched many games. Plenty of Jake's throws had zip on them last year, and he overthrew way more than he underthrew the ball. His throws being all over the place is inaccuracy as others have said. Sometimes it seemed he had a blindfold on and was just chucking it up in the air. Most of Jake's mistakes last year were his fault, but there were some breakdowns in the OL, and the WRs messed up on their routes more than usual last year, and the play calling was suspect in several games. Jake is such an emotional player, I think his mistakes did get into his head and hurt him. If he starts at Cleveland, I hope he does well. He is the best leader the Panthers have ever had, and he used to be great in the 2 minute drill. It would be nice for him to end his career on a better note. No matter what, he is still getting a nice chunk of change.I watched every Panthers game last yr due to owning D-Will and J-Stew. If his arm strength improved than that does not say much for his arm strength before the surgery because his throws to me had no zip and were all over the place on top of very poor decision making.

Not so fast. Quinn would have been a huge upgrade over Delhomme last year. maybe you've never seen him play?I would take Carr over Delhomme anyday. Just my opinion of course. Houston destroyed any chance for Carr to be successful. I wouldn't be at all shocked if he won the starting job and took SF to the playoffs this season.
So, you think the current system and coaching staff in Carolina is better for a QB then the one in Cleveland?Steve Smith is only 1 player. He has upgraded every position you named but WR so far. The draft is still left as well. Delhomme, Watson, Harrison/Hillis sounds a lot better than Quinn, Royal, and Lewis. It seems like Holmgren is setting Mangini up to fail so he can get his coach after next year. ... and you think the running game in CLE is comparable to the running game in CAR? If you think the only difference between the CLE offense and the CAR offense is 1 player we'll just have to agree to disagree. To answer your question I'm not sure whether the CAR or CLE QB coaching staff is better since neither has been successful in the past few years. Yes, because that was exactly my point. It wasn't that he is slowly making the team better and perhaps isn't finished and that the setting up Mangini to fail statement is ignorant nonsense.Wow with upgrades like that you can go ahead and purchase your Superbowl tickets in advance. He has upgraded every position you named but WR so far. Mangini is gone and he knows it. Lerner just did not want to spend the money necessary on a guy like Gruden when a lockout is just about guaranteed in 2011. Gruden has a one yr can't coach clause in his tv contract as well. Gruden will be the next coach for the Browns. FYI Holmgren has not upgraded much, more like rearranging seats on the Titanic. They do have a lot of picks and will be interesting how they use them to maneuver there way up the draft. I'm sure some picks will also be swapped for picks in next years draft.Yes, because that was exactly my point.
