Desert Island Album Draft - 15th Anniversary Edition - 50 Rounds in the books, sign up now for KP's listening program (2 Viewers)

Heh. Rawkus and indies getting love. Lots of waters being traversed that are deservedly so. Black Star was on my short list. Notorious had to go soon, good thing Yo Mama took it (you know where she took it).

On a different -- and pretty much though not perfectly unrelated  -- note, I think I'll be done after about fifteen-twenty rounds of hip hop. I'm trying to not duplicate artists and am also trying to go off the beaten path a bit, but we'll see. I don't see myself turning in thirty albums. Otherwise, you'd definitely have a bell curve of artists rather than exploration of new ones. But the main reason? It's a loooong draft if you're hanging around for thirty. I don't see myself doing any sort of the deal.  I thought we were kidding about thirty. Whoops.

Anyway, I'll shuffle off now and await my turn. Or I'll sideline comment. Not sure which.

PICK 13.21

RUSH - 2112 (1976)

Songs

- A Passage To Bangkok

- Something For Nothing

YEAAHHHHH!  Dammit I love Rush.  They don't get the kind of play they used in my playlists but I would want one of their albums on the island - and especially this one.  It came out my senior year of HS and our home phone ended in 2112.

Coincidence?  I think not.

These two songs kick ### - as does the entire album.
There is a great documentary on 2112 and Moving Pictures that I watched the other day. I was going to take it on my 12th pick of the 21st round!

Rid of Me - P.J. Harvey (1993)

i slag the 90s as being a #### decade for my music tastes, but there were some epic bright spots, and this evocative album is definitely one of 'em.

this was my gateway drug to Polly Jean - raw, scratchy, abrasive - recorded with her trio, the last go 'round for that unit - a punky/bluesy/boozy rip that portended a huge scramble of imitation in it's wake.

plenty of 90s Riot Grrrls and sirens were taking notice, even if Ms. Harvey remained very well tucked into the underground niche (she wouldn't be held there for long, though).

it's a relentlessly intimate onslaught of PJ's darkness and humor ... there is a biting wit that would raise Morrisey's eyebrow, and she crunches her axe so succinctly in punctuation - a very uniquely gifted lady, best all-around of the 90s, for my money.

i think Albini could've punched the final mix up a bit more, but Polly Jean has gone on record as saying she felt Steve's production captured that point of her career perfectly ... who am i to disagree with this queen?

settling into a post-dinner shuffle...

moving in stereo- cars- ... brb.

strange days- doors... really not my favorite of theirs.

pot kettle black- wilco... I've said I'm not a fan and usually whiff every time I try them again. but I'm liking this tune.

outdoor miner- wire... well, yeah. it's my sweet spot and an easy, more accessibly wire tune to like.

tales of brave ulysses- cream... normally feel like I don't need to hear the oldies classic that I can just watch a vietnam war movie to get when needed. but it's good #### and a classic for a reason.

down in a hole- alice in chains... I never did a deep dive with them. I think PJ and nirvana overload steered me away from the PNW grunge bands at the time. but I always like them when I hear them. good tune.

journey to the end of the east bay- rancid... damn. another band I kinda glossed over for no good reason. need to go back to them based on this listen. a btw- this has been a pretty wheelhousey guitar driven mix so far

history lesson part 2- minutemen... was bummed to miss out on drafting this one. interesting down-beat choice on the song from the band- but I'm loving it. and the mix keeps turning the crank.

eta:

pusherman- curtis mayfield... probably listened to this one too many times, so it's lost a bit of how amazing a tune it is to me- still amazing. can't remember if it was this or another, but most of the rest of the tunes on the album outside of a couple are pretty meh.

grace- jeff buckley... nothing but love for this. wishing my top 10-20 goat lover you should've come over would have been selected... but such a great album top to bottom, including this track.

gimme some truth- john lennon... this guy should probably stick to his day job.

For the next one, I will go with another album that I probably talk about to much in the last few years and have drafted from a few times now.  My wife and I have seen them live 4 times now.  Each of the 1st 3 times we saw them it was us going to see another band and they happen to be opening.  All 3 times, despite maybe not having the best "show", we walked away liking their music a bit more than who we were going to see in the first place.  4th time was to specifically see them, and since seeing them the first couple times this album has been in the rotation constantly.   I doubt this was on people's radar, but how many times has that been said during this draft already?

11.01:  LORD HURON - STRANGE TRAILS (2015)

Meet Me in the Woods

Dead Man's Hand
My wife's favorite band, have seen them a few times.  Had tickets to see them at Red Rocks in a few weeks.  We have been looking forward to the trip since forever.  Thankfully they rescheduled for another date next year rather than cancelling.

2 My favourite Wilco song ( because it sounds like <redacted> )

3 Yeah that one really stuck me for me the other night. Heard if before but really love it this time through.

For those that like The ABB, there is a documentary of some sort on at 9 est on AXSTV called Allman Brothers: After the Crash. It's about the band after Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident.

Thanks for the heads up - just set my DVR.

btw- hop along is completely new to me (I think- will have to check my catch-all playlist to see if I've thrown it in there before)... not hating it.

I don't know to what extent this is in danger of being sniped but I want it on my island, and who knows @JZilla could take it to add to his Hold Steady and Def Leppard albums as part of a future real estate deal or something.

These guys aren't cool anymore, if they ever were, because they are (always were) mainstream but I really like that about them. Brandon Flowers makes no bones about wanting to be a showman and wanting this to be the biggest band in the world. With this album they got pretty close (and right now they have a big mainstream rock hit in the the year 2020).

Also, these songs hold up. "Brightside" has charted at least once every year in the UK since it was released and is the standard "end of the night" song there. I did a singalong to it in Vegas (their hometown) that was for the ages. "Somebody Told Me" ####### bangs from the very first note and was the first Killers song I ever heard, and now gun to my head, might once again be my favourite (others took the title in between). "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" and "Smile Like You Mean It" are some awesome twinkly glam epics. "All These Things That I've Done" has the most epic singalong ending and would be the best of its era if "Mr. Brightside" wasn't even better.

Side A there are the big singles but I'm here to tell you side B is good too.  "On Top" is a synthy disco club song that foretold some future directions they'd take. "Andy You're a Star" is probably the crunchiest thing on the whole album. "Believe Me Natalie" and "Midnight Show" are live favourites.

13.09 - The Killers - Hot Fuss (2004)

1.    "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine"
2.    "Mr. Brightside"
3.    "Smile Like You Mean It"
4.    "Somebody Told Me"
5.    "All These Things That I've Done"
6.    "Andy, You're a Star"

8.    "Change Your Mind"
9.    "Believe Me Natalie"
10.    "Midnight Show"
11.    "Everything Will Be Alright"

@Steve Tasker
I have a Killers CD and still listen to it periodically.   It’s not really in my wheelhouse but I find it interesting.   I don’t know if they were cool and don’t care.   If I like it, I listen to it.

Very, very short list snipe.

13.25 - The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002)

No, it's not as good as The Soft Bulletin, but that went in the 4th round and I like this one almost as much.  Clearly this would not be for everyone, but it's the perfect record for when you're in a certain sort of mood.  I don't really know how to describe what that mood is, but like Justice Potter Stewart, I know it when I see it.

Fight Test

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2  (yes, I know most people would not have taken this one, but I guess I'm in that mood)

I went into a Ben Folds funk after missing Whatever and Ever Amen, so didn't pick this up when I should have.  Nice pick-up.  I love "Julianne."  Angry Ben Folds seems to be my favorite Ben Folds.

The three remaining Cars fans here are all waiting to see who blinks first.

I was super torn between 2 and 5 and pretty OK with 4 too.  As my collection shapes up I think I can go poppier, and get the album that set me on the course at age 12 of wanting to geek out big time on bands I like

The Cars - Heartbeat City

Hard to choose songs.  The deep cuts on this are what got me geekin'

It's Not The Night -- Stranger Eyes

Heavy Ben here .. sorry Ric we know you wrote all this stuff

1984

I think it was Mrs R that picked their debut, and it was right after I spent 90mins+ listening to them the night before in prep to take an album soon as well.  One of those bands that there was 0 chance I was going to be listening to in HS because I was either too cool or too metal, but boy was I dumb.  Fantastic band that I wrote and glad I rediscovered in my old age.  Debut is great of course, but the follow-up is my favorite album with a few of my favorite songs of theirs on it.
