38.16 - Concert for George (2002)

Not much to say here.  This concert makes me happysad.

I will not take yet a third version of "Here Comes the Sun," but I'm gonna hit y'all with an 8-1/2-minute sitar/tabla song featuring Ravi Shankar's daughter Anoushka.  No really, I am.  To make up for it, I'll include a kick-### version of "Isn't It a Pity" featuring Billy Preston and Eric Clapton.

Your Eyes - If it helps at all, she's very pretty.
Just what the mix needed.  More Sitar!!!

*** Evening Question ***

If you could only take one artist (their entire catalog), who would it be?
For me it would be the Stones and based on longevity they surely have a huge catalogue. Admittedly there’s a splattering of some good songs post-1981, but most of the albums are filler material.

FIONA APPLE - WHEN THE PAWN...

(1999)
When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king
What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight
And he'll win the whole thing 'fore he enters the ring
There's nobody to batter when your mind is your might
So when you go solo you hold your own hand
And remember that depth is the greatest of heights
And if you know where you stand then you know where to land
And if you fall it won't matter 'cause you'll know that you're right

Upon its release, When the Pawn... broke the record for longest album title at 444 characters

the way that i have chosen several albums is to think about a particular sound in my head that I love and would want to hear and then try to figure out which album would best represent that.  One these is lady singing with a piano.  So when I noticed a Fiona Apple track from this album as a suggestion in one of my other playlists today, I decided I would grab it.  Her first album was very good too, though I am having a hard time getting to the new one.

1. On the Bound

2."To Your Love"

3."Limp"

4."Love Ridden"

5."Paper Bag"

6."A Mistake"

7."Fast as You Can"

8."The Way Things Are"

9. Get Gone

10."I Know"

Time to jump on the Doobie train!  I’m an unashamed Michael McDonald fan and this was up there for me with their earlier stuff. I like a lot of the songs on this album (particularly Here to Love You and Open Your Eyes) bur my song choices will be explained below. Yo Mama selects:

38.22 - The Doobie Brothers - Minute by Minute (1978)

What a Fool Believes - One of my all time favorites, and by far the league leader for songs I will 100% sing along to much too loudly while knowing less than 25% of the words. “What a fool belieeeeeves ... a baabaa faafaa naanaa!”

Minute by Minute - Pretty sure this was the song on constant loop on the Smart-Tech TVs in Forty Year Old Virgin. Paul Rudd will now hate our playlist if he’s following along.

Since the 70s Los Kjarkas has been the most famous band in Bolivia. Second is a boy band formed by sons of Los Kjarkas. It's Latin American folk music that would work in any spaghetti western (love Ennio). When I said I used to listen to Django every morning; it's used to because of a bunch world folk music I play now. Not every day, but slow days for sure. Some gypsy music from the Balkans and some Italian folk from Calabria too. English annoys me in the morning.

There's a back story here, but I don't feel like storytelling. Briefly, my nephew married a Peruvian girl 15 years ago. At the wedding I was the only one from my family who spoke Spanish. So I interpreted. I also spent a day showing the Peruvian contingent Las Vegas. This was the bride's mom's music. I liked both alot. All three of us bonded.

I'm serious about taking this to the island above all available. I might take something similar if this goes 50. Happy to find this live recording sounding great. The hits are Vuelve and Wayayay. The wind instrument gets me everytime. It's a Ronroco. Except for the lead singers flamenco guitar the rest of the instruments are traditional Bolivian instruments. A couple variations on ukele/parlor guitars and a drum made from a hollowed out stump and wrapped in goat skins.

The hits are Vuelve (sad love song) and Wayayay. But Eeph prefers deep tracks and I want to feature the ronroco.

Settled Down Like Rain - Rock Chalk:  Is this country?  seems kind of like country.  it's pleasant enough, but not really my thing.

Empire Ants - Gorillaz in the Midst: tinkly, echo-y piano into synth break, dreamy, ethereal.  it's ok.

Handshake Drugs - Wilcommen Bienvenue: Is Wilco the super drugged out band or fans?  Or is that Widespread Panic?  did I already ask that?  what day is today?

The Kids don't Stand a Chance - The World is a Vampire Weeknd:  Is this a cover?  Sounds pretty good.  Sounds like...something.

Whistle down the Wind - Nick Heyward: Not familiar with this artist.  Is this from the 80s?  god bless the fretless bass.

Three Days - Peripheral and Mr. Carmen Electra: Like this song a lot.  don't remember hearing it before.  wait, maybe now i do recognize the chorus.  holy ####, 10+ minutes?  wow, this is like a ####### opera.

Glory Days - Cousin Brucie: Never been a Bruce guy despite having been born in Jersey.  I can live with this song.

Hoolligans - Simey and the Hepcats - Love to see the ska being represented.  Have been debating whether to take a ska album or not.  Great selection.

We got Married - Remember when you were in the Beatles?: Great song.  Wow, this is a monster album.

I would have much rather just taken Chronicles but that is a "greatest hits" album but I'm not an animal, so I won't - but to get the two songs I want I have to take Steve Winwood's first two solo albums.  A short story about the Chronicles album.  I got out of basic training/AIT in January of 1988.  Knew of Winwood, but mostly from his "super group" stuff.  Had a guy in my platoon that loved him and would sing anything from him while we were standing in formation out in the cold waiting for the drills to grace us with their presence.  Or he'd sing in the barracks or shower or range, anywhere a DI couldn't hear him.  He loved to sing "Valerie" and so the first 2 albums (cassettes) I bought after I got home were Chronicles and INXS - Kick (thx @rcam).

Anyway there were two songs on that album that I fell in love with "Vacant Chair" and "Spanish Dancer" - so to get them both I will take two solo albums.  Enjoy:

37.31 Steve Winwood - Steve Winwood (1977)

Vacant Chair

Hold On

38.10 Steve Winwood - Arc Of A Diver (1980)

Spanish Dancer

Arc Of A Diver

*** Evening Question ***

If you could only take one artist (their entire catalog), who would it be?
if I could get all the bands he was in, I'd go with Johnny Marr.  The Smiths, The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse, The Cribs and his solo stuff.

Ooooo, this sounds really interesting.

*** Evening Question ***

Would still be The Smithereens.  Fortunately they also have an album of Beatles covers and their rendition of The Who's Tommy, so I would actually get 3 bands for the price of 1.

38.26  The Microphones - The Glow, Pt. 2 (2001)

I've been planning to take this album all along because it is one of my favorites ever and would absolutely want it on a deserted island.   I'm sure I could get it later and I was about to take another album when I read a tweet that Phil Elverum sent today addressing our current national debacle and decided, #### it.  Took it as a sign.

I was in an Influenza-induced, febrile delirium in 2001 the first time I listened to this album and that was perfect.

This is an album best played in it's entirety on headphones but here are two more sure-fire favorites for the playlist:

I Want Wind To Blow

The Glow, Pt. 2

I think I'm itc, but I'm debating btwn a few better-known acts than what I've taken recently. If they get sniped I can go w something weird or off the grid again. Either way plz skip this pick for me while I debate

SECOND EVENING QUESTION:  What would be your second choice?  This is a lot more difficult for me.
Some Jazz, probably Miles or Duke.

ETA:  change that to Pat Metheny.  He has a ton of albums in many formats from solo acoustic to Zero Tolerance for Silence which is 40 minutes of feedback and distortion.
