36.31 - The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night (2010)

Keep on scooping up some modern shoegazey vibes for the island.  This is a little more post-rocky, whereas M83 is a more new wavey, but it'll fit the motif.  Sometimes you just want want noise and barely perceptible vocals, you know?

"Like the Ocean, Like the Innocent Pt. 2: The Innocent"

I liked these guys a lot at the time and the album before, but probably haven't listened to more than a couple times since for whatever reason.

This is another one of those albums that I tend to forget about, like the Sandro Perri album I picked earlier, only to rediscover like 3 years later and remember how much I loved it.

*** Evening Question ***

If you could only take one artist (their entire catalog), who would it be?
Tough question as you have to balance quality and quantity. I think I go Van Morrison assuming I get his records with Them as well.

Also sick move taking B2B Winwood albums

SECOND EVENING QUESTION:  What would be your second choice?  This is a lot more difficult for me.
Dylan or Miles, can't decide.

Why did rtj drop the album on a Wednesday?
Well I guess here is the answer:

"F--k it, why wait? The world is invested with bullsh-t, so here's something raw to listen to while you deal with it all," the group said in a statement Wednesday (June 3) regarding their surprise release. "We hope it brings you some joy. Stay safe and hopeful out there and thank you for giving 2 friends the chance to be heard and do what they love. With sincere love and gratitude, Jamie and Mike."

Stalking my 21 year old daughter's Spotify.  The last 5 artists she has listened to:

Weezer, The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, The 1975, Tame Impala, Ok Go

It goes down hill from there, but maybe I'm not a failure as a parent.

37.10 - Sigur Ros - Takk... (2005)

For awhile, it seemed these guys could do no wrong.  Ágætis byrjun would've been an early selection for me, had it not been taken in the 2nd round.  I will happily take this as a 37th round consolation prize.  I remember this coming out right at the beginning of my sophomore year of college, and it had to have been my most played album that year.

If nothing else, "Hoppípolla" instantly becomes the most beautiful song on my sorry god-forsaken island.  And I still maintain that "Glósóli" has maybe the best 2-minute crescendo in modern music.

"Hoppípolla"

"Glósóli"

Shuffle Time

Lifes a ##### by Nas, A2, Olu and something else - I liked the outro of the song, because it had a decent beat with dim music in the background, and no voices

Try and Love Again - The Eagles - My favorite song on the album. Randy Meisner should have stuck around.

#####, Don't Kill My Vibe - Kendrick Lamar -  The song killed my vibe. Their/his voices sometimes sounds weird during what I guess you'd call a chorus. Kinda robotic like.

Divorce Song - Liz Phair - I like it. I like that whole album.

You Ain't Goin Nowhere - Bob Dylan - Love the song, but I do like the Byrds version better. It's more whimsical and breezy. I still like Bob's version.

Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) - Arcade Fire - I like it

Passin' Me By - The Pharcyde - I had to help it reach the end faster

Jet Boy - NY Dolls -  Charged up punkish rock music. Is that David Johansen singing? I like it, but couldn't listen to it on a daily basis.

Ok, so after that:

Jason Derulo, Maroon 5, One Direction, Childish Gambino, Gym Class Heroes, Nicki Minaj, Tay Tay, Mackemore.

:bag:

39.06 Hey Now Hey, Aretha Franklin (1973)

I close out my popular albums with royalty. This is my favorite of The Queen's albums because, while it doesnt have any of her biggest hits, it gives her a chance to really cut loose on the piano. If you have not heard my favorite Aretha tune, Just Right Tonight, you're in for a treat. It's what the word "church" is meant to describe. And the last popular song i add to the mix will be my "watch the horizon" song on my island - Aretha's astounding arrangement of the Bernstein/Sondheim classic from West Side Story. It is the song America needs to hear right now, for its citizens who really must look past the unmaking of this great land to the horizon of its fading potential. nufced

Happily added to playlist.

Are you doing all classical from here on out, or classical and jazz?  I'll probably take two more classical at least (or one is Baroque and one is Romantic, actually); I think one will not be on your radar but the other could be...

I share spotify with my daugther. She loves the bold, but it's Anderson.Paak, The Weeknd, G-Eazy, Vampire Weekend, Childish Gambino for her. Btw, Childish Gambino's March release is something "I" love. He went "out there" like Sturgill did. Works for me and channels Prince.

#40 will be jazz and the rest classical (unless sumn bumps me in the head). thx again for your help

I live in North America, therefore I should rightly take the North American edition of any album I select, right... :oldunsure:  It adds one song only in any case... I asked the commish and he said yes.

at some point we'll need to start considering Xmas music
If this was a legit deserted island with 30 picks, I would have taken an Xmas album by either Frank or the Ronettes in place of what I took. I love Christmas and would need some songs to celebrate each year.

Nice. I’ve been contemplating for awhile. Surprised it hasn’t been taken.

My daughter was out demonstrating in front of the police station but she came back to her apartment at five minutes before curfew.

She has I'm Black and I'm Proud written on her forearms in magic marker.
Is there hard conversations sometimes between you and your wife about how can you truly understand how she feels and what she goes through since you are white? I have a friend who is white and married to a black man, and this comes up sometimes between them. She feels helpless sometimes trying to help console in certain circumstances. I hope that isn't too personal a question.

My wife and I started talking about this the other day because Dave Coulter is on Worst Cooks.

39.03: Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper & Stephen Stills - Super Session (1968)

A one-off among some all-timers as they were between between bands.

Songs to follow.
