The Decemberests- not my usual kind of music but not bad

Pearl Jam- Smile. Like PJ but don't remember this song- very good

Grateful Dead- only 4mins so listened, meh

Gunz Blasin- Unkle- just a bunch of noise and yelling to me

Bsby,'s on Fire- Eno.  Get this alot in my shuffle, good thing I like it

3rd Planet- Modest Mouse - keep listening to this type of music/sound but still don't like it.

New Pornographers-

Mass Romantic-- didn't love it but didn't hate it. Note to listen to more

Satellite Mind by Metric is good and never heard of either

Broken Arrow- Buffalo Springfield- usually like what I hear by them but not this song, skipped after 4+ mins

For a Fool- Shins.  More of the music I hate but they seem better at it than most

Still listening but have dinner to cook so no more of my caveman reviews- lol

JAMES BROWN - MOTHERLODE

(1988, 2003)

I guess this is a a compilation, but as far as i know, it is mostly previously unreleased material, so hopefully it flies.  Been wanting some soul on the island for a while and trying to figure out how to do it considering some of the other albums already picked.  Listening to Mind Power on the playlist today really got me in a James Brown mood and had me thinking about a few tracks in particular, but then I settled on this one.  (what an exciting story!)

1. "There It Is"

2."She's the One"

3."Since You Been Gone"

4."Untitled Instrumental"

5."Say It Loud (Say It Live)"

6."Can I Get Some Help"

7."You Got to Have a Mother for Me"  (The "mother" of the song's title was, in the words of biographer RJ Smith, "[Brown's] honorific for a big butt")

8."Funk Bomb" (Instrumental)

9."Baby Here I Come"

10."People Get Up and Drive Your Funky Soul" (Remix)

11."I Got Ants in My Pants (and I Want to Dance)" (Remix)

12."You've Changed" (bonus track on 2003 expanded release)

13."Bodyheat" (Alternate Mix)  (bonus track on 2003 expanded release)

I'm getting very precious as we come down the home stretch and with no clock and focusing a lot more on albums' bugs than their features.  Probably need to just go with my gut more.

I’ve done that a few times and then realized there have been like 5,0000 albums taken so far. Everything left is likely to have warts.

Joni Mitchell - Coyote  -  quality Joni ...really need to include more of her stuff in my mellow mixes

Ozzy - Over The Mountain  -  love ozzy ...not like the transition from Joni

John Mayall - Little Girl  -  early English blues-based rock ...excellent, still a bad flow so far between these songs.  It's like if you went to a Stones concert and got James Taylor in-between songs ...it messes with you.

Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers  -  well, now it's really ####in' with me ...great tune but I'm officially a mess musically right now in this spin (love Gabriel)

Joy Division - Shadowplay  -  at least this wasn't as much of a shock to the system transitioning from Gabriel, good tune - good group

Best Coast - Boyfriend - ok ...like it out of the box, never heard of them - it's like if the Ronnettes were transported 30 years into the future)

Ennio Morricone - The Trio  -  well this is quite the change.  Either I'm waiting for my enchiladas mole to arrive or Clint Eastwood ready to kill a mother####er

Snail Mail - Pristine  -  it's growing on me, I went to allmusic and it said "Specializing in an unsettled, introspective lo-fi with textured chords" ...I wish someone would say something cool like that about me

Zebra - Who's Behind That Door  -  I like it, but it's definitely 80s radio rock ...it's like the super-band, "Asia" had a little brother named "Jimmy" that wanted to be a star, but I would keep this in an 80s mix

Cannonball Adderley - Love For Sale  -  oh come the #### on.  #1 it's beautiful, but it just became an unrequested 7 minute intermission from my already very broken concert

Squeeze - Up The Junction  -  starting to recover with this perfect song it feels like I'm crawling out of a hole ...must ... get ... some ... mo ... mentum  batman

2Cellos - Smooth Criminal  -  I would think that there is a pretty narrow window where cellos covering Michael Jackson hits would fit in a playmix

Yes - Leave It  -  I am a giant "Yes" fan, this version of their group isn't what made them - and damn if it doesn't take me right back to Zebra

42.29 The Dismemberment Plan, Emergency & I (1999)

Back and Forth
The City

Wild contrast between this and fellow 1999 favorite The Soft Bulletin. While the latter is lush and layered, the former is pure wiry, high-strung energy, and while I don't listen to Emergency & I front-to-back as often, the high points are incredible. Soul-baring lyrics, killer drumming, and really the whole band feels like they're going all out.

Is it @The Dreaded Marco that loves What Do You Want Me To Say? And/or NV? That'd probably be my third pick, but "Back and Forth" and "The City" were essentially locks for me coming in, and listening to them again just now confirmed it.

41.23 - Crumbling - Mid-Air Thief (2019)

There's always a risk in drafting a new love in this format.  I don't know if this one will turn out to be a passing fancy but it's been one of my favorites since I discovered it last November.

I gave it a lot of 2019 AOTY points.
The artist's name is Mid-Air Thief and he hides behind a rabbits head in his rare public appearances.  The singing by Mr. Thief and collaborator Summer Soul is all in Korean but worlds away from K-Pop.  I've seen it described as folktronica because there are a lot of acoustic guitars and synths.  I think it's closer to bedroom pop whatever that means.  It's also strangely reminiscent to the Beach Boys

I really like this album but I'll admit, I kind of forgot about them and haven't listened in a while.

Next Friday!#!#

Pop music, gin music, party music, R&B music, dance music, great music. This album pushed her from "big" to "massive international superstar".  This one to me works as an album of front to back great songs. There are maybe higher highs in her catalogue (though, Umbrella....) but on this one, even beyond the 5 singles, Push up on Me, Breaking Dishes, etc... are still good to great. And yeah, I realize I'm selecting the two most "rock"ish songs for the playlist (Shut up and Drive samples "Blue Monday" and is basically a new wave song, and Don't Stop the Music samples "Wanna Be Starting Something" and turns it into a dancefloor filler) but I am who I am. The ballads here (Rehab; Hate That I Love I Love You) work too. And Umbrella is Umbrella.

42.32 - Rihanna - Good Girl Gone Bad (2007)

1.    "Umbrella" (featuring Jay-Z)    4:35
2.    "Push Up on Me"    3:15
3.    "Don't Stop the Music"   4:27
4.    "Breakin' Dishes"    3:20
5.    "Shut Up and Drive"    3:33
6.    "Hate That I Love You" (featuring Ne-Yo)   3:39
7.    "Say It"     4:10
8.    "Sell Me Candy   2:45
9.    "Lemme Get That"   3:41
10.    "Rehab"    4:54
11.    "Question Existing"    4:08
12.    "Good Girl Gone Bad"  3:35

Long Mix:

Helicopter - Bloc Party:  Liked it, will investigate more of their stuff. 8.5

In Hiding - Pearl Jam:  Not a huge PJ fan, something about EV's voice annoys me.  This wasn't horrible though. 4

Paradise - White Lung:  I little too punky for my tastes.  5.5

De Camino a La Vereda - Buena Vista Social Club:  I need a margarita and some more chips please. 8

Raining In Darling - Bonnie "Prince" Billy:  Jezze what a transition.  Going on my depressing Whiskey Sippin'©  mix.  7

Cold Little Heart - Michael Kiwanuka:  my song, the longer version is much supperior (may change it) 9.5

All the Way from Memphis - Mott The Hoople:  Not very familiar with stuff other than Yound Dudes.  This was nice 70's glam rock. I should give them a deeper look.  7.5

Heroin Girl - Everclear:  Thank god it was only 2 minutes long. 4

Alright - Supergrass:  ❤️ Makes me happy. 9

Heart's Done Time - Aerosmith:  Like early Aerosmith and this didn't disappoint 8

weak end shuffle:

Fountain of Sorrow, Jackson Browne - the male Aimee Mann. talented & pretty enough to get away with rewriting the same song for decades.

Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?, Waylon Jennings  - never cared for songs referencing other artists, but maybe that's just me. This is one of the country musicians i woulda like to seen get the Rick Rubin or Jack White treatment cuz i dont think his pal Willie dragged him far enough out of Nashvilel to realize his true self and that's a shame.

I Am, AWOLNATION - Like Sail, which i got in my last shuffle, waaaay too much volume difference between the soft parts and the loud parts. i both get a kick out of and pity anyone who wants my attention that badly.

Carry the Zero, Built to Spill - Finally got to hear this much-picked and -fussed band. My curiosity has been raised by the DIAD love, but i wanted to wait to experience them in the shuffle. Sonic enough, trifle limp (i'm kinda the musical equivalent of the crusty ol' bugger who thinks every young male is gay), clever lyric. Sentence suspended without prejudice til next hearing

So Quero Um Xodo, Gilberto Gil - I just want a love, a good thing, too. When i find one, i'll take her on a picnic and sing this to her.

A Horse Called Golgotha, Baroness - Chops up the wazoo. Dug it til they opened their frikkin mouths. Why does so much hard music have to be masturbatory attention-deficit nonsense?. Go rub somebody else's ears with your eraser. Great segue with Brazilia picnic music, tho...

Bodies of Christ, Mariachi El Bronx - I like how these folks kept the themes & schemes of mariachi songs, which i'd always attributed to the Spanish rhymes. Just as awkwardly & passionately declarative. Charming & effective.

Maybe I'm Amazed, Paul McCartney - and, suddenly, all other efforts are immediately and definitively put to shame. And it's not even a favorite.

Stormtroopin', our 46th President (if there is a God) - As my Mama always says, "Testerone is the Devil's underpants" Howza bout changing yo draws every fitty yrs or so, Teddy? Gettin' a li'l crus........(removes arrow)

Wrathchild, Iron Maiden. My favorite metal band. Wanna know my favorite finger to get a hangnail on, now?

I mean there are so many great jazz albums out there, would be a crime against the country to leave them at port

This band has about a 50% hit rate with me which puts it on par with lots of great bands I like such as Drive-By Truckers, Cracker, Pavement, etc.  (actually, Pavement has a hit rate closer to 33%).  In a vacuum the lead singer's voice leaves much to be desired, but the symbiosis on display when it merges with those guitars is frequently beautiful.

I may back this up by selecting a fourth album (my favorite), but I'll leave it dangling for now.

OK, I have a list of "Val's Desert Island 40 Quality Albums Nobody Drafted in 40 Rounds" all finished and ready to go.  Are you guys OK with me posting the results, or should I wait for you to finish up at 50?  (Or, alternatively, just burn it as more of the weird stuff my wife would pick?  (Which is only partially true.))

Your call, I won't post if there's any dissent.

Ok, album 43 and I’m going to jizz jazz (as the kids here have been saying)

Rd 43: Modern Jazz Classics by Art Pepper + Eleven

Cool jazz meets big band

This guy had a smattering of hit songs in the 70s, including a few that possibly peaked at #1, but ultimately he was a forgettable guy.  BUT, he released a barnburner of an album - with one caveat, the opening track sucks balls. You'll be rewarded if you listen to it from track 2 through the end.

Resembling Richard Simmons is a bummer of a trait.

Hindsight is 20/20, but we should have been linking three songs from each album all along.  I mean, if it's one of the greatest albums of all-time...

43.37 - Just a Boy, Leo Sayer   1974

The Bells of St. Mary's

*One Man Band

In My Life

*The Hit!  Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance)

* for the playlist

That sounds like an Executive Decision

I'm not in charge but as far as I'm concerned if I didn't take something after 43 rounds, I probably deserve to miss out on it.

He should link two songs from each album for the playlist.

If you’ve come this far, wait until round 50. Still a lot of albums to be drafted.

that was me - and it's pure 70s guitar rock heaven

ETA:  I'm catching up posts and I see other uncomplimentary comments about Ted Nugent - happy to replace it

It takes me back to a time - maybe not Heavy Metal Parking Lot back ...this is 10 years past my HS years but still looks pretty familiar.  It's Maryland, not Dayton, OH ...but it just as easily could have been about any Midwestern town that had Judas Priest fans

NOTE: did not remember the opening line where the 20 yr old kid is making out with a 13 yr old girl - not cool
I don't think anyone needs to replace songs they want on there.  I can easily skip it and did.

41.23 - Crumbling - Mid-Air Thief (2019)

There's always a risk in drafting a new love in this format.  I don't know if this one will turn out to be a passing fancy but it's been one of my favorites since I discovered it last November.
