Desert Island Album Draft - 15th Anniversary Edition - 50 Rounds in the books, sign up now for KP's listening program (1 Viewer)

Did someone delete all my songs from the Spotify playlist or are they just so bad everyone politely skips them? It’s been a long time since a random shuffler had one of my songs lol. Though when otb lists his shuffle sessions I usually can’t tell what he’s listening to so maybe that’s where my songs are coming up.

Some still on my list:

Bowie - Live - A Reality Tour

Gerry Refferty - City to City

B-52s - Cosmic Thing

Empire of the Sun - Ice on the Dune

The Ting Tings

Miguel - Wildheart or War (couldn't decide)

HAIM - latest album

Genesis - Abacab or Duke

Childish Gambino

Vampire Weekend - last album

Also - I am keeping this 100% open to how many albums you are doing and how you want them chosen.   Only have time for 1-2?  Cool.  Bored this weekend and ripping off 10 albums?  Cool.   If you want me to do a random dice roll for a couple albums let me know and I will hook you up.
4 or 5 should be good - I like what you did with my island. Randomly assign me an island, based on my interests have that island suggest a handful or so and I pick 2 or 3 of them. Then I pick 2 others on my own.

That was why I kept pushing it back.  I tried to listen to the rest of the album a couple of times, but nothing grabbed me.
This is kind of why I threw out the idea of next doing an opening (and/or closing) song draft. So many great songs are part of albums in which the rest of the material is not nearly as palatable.

My top album left on the board was A Series of Sneaks by Spoon. If you like Spoon and haven't listened to it, I highly recommend it. It's kind of the transition album between their Pixies wannabee start to their career and the more refined minimalist rock that they became famous for. 14 songs, 33 minutes, so mostly short bursts. I left it off because I wasn't doubling up on artists and we had a lot of Spoon taken but if you listened to them and wished they rocked a bit harder, this is the album.

30 Gallon Tank

The album was released on Elektra and 4 months after it was released they were dropped from the label. The re-release of the album adds on "Laffitte Don't Fail Me Now" and "The Agony of Laffitte" both directed at Ron Laffitte who was their A&R guy with Elektra and Sylvia Rhone who was president of Elektra. Both songs are awesome. and have bite.

Agony of Laffitte

All I ever asked of you is a copy of Garage Days
And to tell me the truth
Ain't no one watching you exit Ventura Highway
It's like I knew two of you man
The one before and after we shook hands

-----

When you do that line tonight
Remember that it came at a steep price
Keep telling yourself there's more to you than her
But you're no better than Sylvia

Are we free to post some leftovers that couldn't make it to the islands?
Some of mine:

Manic Street Preachers, Holy Bible - Played this a ton in the early '00s. Considered it in the mid-rounds, but listened to it again and Jesus, it's so lyrically bleak that a full album listen can be tough. I still think it's incredible, and I certainly played it more in my life than others I picked, but couldn't bring it to my desert island. Wish the Manics had found their way onto some island.

Wire, Pink Flag - All-time classic that slipped through the cracks. Nearly took it in the final rounds.

Clifford Brown & Max Roach - Love this one. Roach and Brown are two of the baddest of all time.

Manuel Göttsching, E2-E4 - This or one of Göttsching's Ash Ra Tempel albums.

Stars, Set Yourself on Fire - As I mentioned before, nearly took this and Feist's The Reminder back-to-back to give me that BSS energy on the island. Set Yourself on Fire and Ageless Beauty are so good.

Speaking of albums that didn't make the cut, just like @Hov34, I had Cosmic Thing in the hopper as well.

Just before changing my mind on #50 at the 11th hour, I was going to go with an album by The Babys, especially after Wikkid's comment about Jude Cole:

House Full of Reasons, Jude Cole - when John Waite is your ceiling, why bother?
I was going to give him all the John Waite he could handle, but then I switched to DC Talk.  As for the Babys album I would have chosen, I would have gone with one of their pre-Jonathan Cain works, Broken Heart, and the tracks Wrong or Right and Isn't it Time. Fun fact about The Babys: two of the founding members, lead guitarist Wally Stocker and drummer Tony Brock, are in the band that appears in the prom scene of the 80's cult classic Just One of the Guys, and Stocker is the one that hits on and leaves the prom with Terri's best friend/prom date.

Also was thinking of The Babys, but yet another band that to me has a lot of good material, but just not one particularly noteworthy album.

Great trivia on Just One of The Guys - did not know that. "It's OK, he's got ####."

I literally just came here to say we may need to start a new draft up sooner than later because I just posted in the political cesspool.
On one hand, I'm curious when my last activity was in that forum. But on the other hand, I'm not gonna dare click to find out. That's how the quicksand effect takes over.

That line never gets old.

One of my buddies growing up was a big fan of The Babys and when we played D&D at his house, they were part of a rotation that included a couple of local MD-area bands, Crack the Sky and Kix, as well as a few other more mainstream bands.

This is kind of why I threw out the idea of next doing an opening (and/or closing) song draft. So many great songs are part of albums in which the rest of the material is not nearly as palatable.
Album sequencing is a big deal with me. Both in separating the master pieces from the great from the good - and what you described above. Live's Throwing Copper is one that comes to mind. Sure, there are hits littered throughout but there is some filler that hasn't aged particularly well. But the closer - and the lesser known opener are perfect. Not perfect songs, but perfectly placed on the album as a whole.

Nice call with NRBQ. Also congrats on seeing Suzanne Vega live. She did an in-studio show for a local station a few years ago (WRNR, Eastern shore based that reaches not much further than Baltimore and Annapolis), and was very impressed at how well her studio work transitions to live performance.  She told a story of a gig where  they lost power and were taking requests for songs they could do acoustically.  Someone asked for 99.9 Degrees (if you're not familiar, it has a loop in the background that sounds like hammers striking an anvil). Their stripped down version went over very well, and she repeated it in the studio during the broadcast.  She's truly and underappreciated talent.

John Prine Tribute - tonight at 7:30 est

Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile, Eric Church, Kacey Musgraves, and Bill Murray will remember the life and music of John Prine during an all-star online special on Thursday. Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine streams June 11th at 7:30 p.m. ET via Prine’s YouTube, Facebook, and Twitch.

Prine’s family, including his widow Fiona Whelan Prine, and his Oh Boy Records label produced the tribute, which assembles musical performances, first-person accounts of those who knew Prine, and unseen footage of the songwriter, who died in April after contracting COVID-19.

Along with Isbell, Carlile, Church, Musgraves, and Murray, the lineup includes: Courtney Marie Andrews, Dan Auerbach, Kevin Bacon, Brené Brown, producer Dave Cobb, Stephen Colbert, Peter Cooper, Iris DeMent, John Dickerson, Mitchell Drosin, David Ferguson, Vince Gill, Jeremy Ivey, Jim James, Pat McLaughlin, Margo Price, Jack Prine, Tommy Prine, Bonnie Raitt, the Secret Sisters, Kyra Sedgwick, Amanda Shires, Sturgill Simpson, Todd Snider, Billy Bob Thornton, Kurt Vile, Kelsey Waldon, Sara Watkins, Jody Whelan, John Paul White, and Rita Wilson. Prine’s band of Kenneth Blevins, David Jacques, Fats Kaplin, and Jason Wilber is also involved.

My list of 100 or so included All Killer No Filler by Sum 41.

It has aged shockingly well, in the don't take us too seriously sort of way it was intended.

In Too Deep

Fat Lip/Pain for Pleasure <- this video is so great :lmao:

Add on "Motivation" and "Nothing on My Back" and  "Makes No Difference" (from the UK release) and we're halfway to an epic.

I literally just came here to say we may need to start a new draft up sooner than later because I just posted in the political cesspool.
i've been participating in both current drafts (all-time sports, DIAD), and the amount of "sits" i've seen has been insane ... no less that 10 posters been suspended (or worse?) through both (sports draft started 3/16) - a few racking up multiple infractions.

why bother in that psf?  it's a ####hole.

This one didn't quite bubble up to my to listen to list in this draft but it was right there with Anti-Flag as one of the few aughts pop-punk that's stood the test of time.

Yeah I'm thinking I will choose 1 or more, have the islander give me at least one "blind" suggestion just based on what the islander is feeling and maybe a suggestion based on my feedback and then see if kp will give a random 50-sided die roll for a totally rando album. Kind of want some immersion on the island I'm assigned to.

Everyone gets assigned another drafter's Island and will review X amount of albums and post on it. Some of the ideas was one (drafter's choice), one (reviewer's) choice and one (random).
I'd love to do this but with my current work schedule I couldn't do it much justice.  :kicksrock:

Rd 49

Waiting for the Sun - The Doors (1968)

gotta have something from Jim, one of my first idols - third in their catalog, and a more musically diverse direction portended here ... don't think "The Soft Parade" lived up to the promise of this one, no wonder they went back to their more raw and blues based power for the final two.

two of my favorite Morrison showcases up in here - "Not to Touch the Earth" is the most manic piece they did that clocked in under 4' (this album did not feature any extended players like "The End" & "When The Music's Over" from the first two) ... i got it marked as Jim's signature piece ... it will always remind me of his total grandiose posture like none other.  i never partook in hallucinogenics, but "My Wild Love" screams PEYOTE!  hey, i love it from the perspective of not tripping, so it's got that going for it.

a few other catalog mainstays here, including their biggest hit "Hello, I Love You" ... great listening platter to bring along.

i see they are a polarizing band up on this bored, but i have much love and respect for them taking a darker path than most ... they really were a gateway for much of the more underground stuff i gravitated to, Manzarek and Krieger wove some nefarious &  intricate mayhem behind the Lizard King ... the Doors were punk and goth without even knowing it - but i do.

Not to Touch the Earth

My Wild Love
I almost took this for my Rd 49 pick, but felt I needed the soothing peace of the violin and piano duo I took. I can visit the other Doors islands. Waiting for the Sun was probably their most experimental album. My favorite tune on the album is Love Street. I also considered Absolutely Live if only to hear Jim's wild scream on Backdoor Man. That could have been the first thing anyone heard as they step foot on the island, and they could decide from there if they wanted to stay.

I'll roll a d50 and take one of your albums for a noontime walk to Alamo Square

ETA:  I'll do one of pik's picks after that
