Roll #1 was a 9 which was the first Arctic Monkeys album.  Love it but was looking for something new.

Roll #2 was a 32 Amadou and Mariam / Dimanche a Bamako.  I know they're African but not the region and I think Dimanche is a day of the week in French.  We have a winner

So, I was familiar with the big song from this one before listening. Overall, it's a very good album of electro/psych pop-rock, not unlike a lot of other bands I listen to - the poppier ones leaning towards MGMT and the more rocking ones maybe towards a Dear Rouge or something. 

My favourite songs were 10,000 Emerald Pools, Dopamine, Holy Ghost and Electric Love. 

The one negative for me and what keeps me liking it and not loving it is his voice. I imagine this could be a selling point for other people but an album full of falsetto wore me out. A feel like a woman's voice or a deeper/more direct man's voice over the same songs I would really love.

I almost took this for my Rd 49 pick, but felt I needed the soothing peace of the violin and piano duo I took. I can visit the other Doors islands. Waiting for the Sun was probably their most experimental album. My favorite tune on the album is Love Street. I also considered Absolutely Live if only to hear Jim's wild scream on Backdoor Man. That could have been the first thing anyone heard as they step foot on the island, and they could decide from there if they wanted to stay.

...yeah, that live album is as hallmark as any selected, Jim's the biggest personality of any of 'em on the stage. 

"Love Street" and "Spanish Caravan" were tough leave offs, as was "Unknown Soldier"

I asked Siri for my random number to listen to an @Eephus album. I got 48 (I noticed while scrolling that you don't have a pick in for round 47) which was an album by some guy named Terrence Trent D'Arby. Honestly, zero clue what this is. I see it's from 92 so I am expecting some 90s style R&B. The name is throwing me though. I feel like most people would change their name to something more catchy like Terrence Trent or just Terrence or Trent D'Arby. The 3 name thing is tough to pull off in music.  

4 tracks in:

- the beginning of the album where it sounds like chanting "welcome to a Monastery" and the album is called Symphony or Damn had me wondering if it was actually going to be some kind of experimental classical -electronic avant-garde thing. Its not, it's much more like Prince. I think my 90s R&B hunch was right. 

7 tracks in: 

- doing Google now and it blew my mind that Terrence Trent D'Arby isn't even his given name- like not even close. This is the stage name he chose? Why not just stick with your real name, Sananda? That's a cool name- reminds me of Sade. As does some of the music. I like this duet called Delicate. So far I think the first real song called She Kissed Me was my least favorite. It was too Lenny Kravitz straight forward rock. 

11 tracks in: 

- also cool to see that he's a multi-instrumentalist, that is always really impressive. It's good music, my biggest complaint is that it's all too clean for me. This is so polished and I tend to like stuff a little less so. Despite so many songs, he does a good job keeping things fresh. 

final 6 tracks: 

- he's really good at changing his voice, sometimes he sounds like Otis and other times like Jeff Buckley and then Smokey or Marvin Gaye. Sometimes even on the same song. 

- the guy is really talented and it's a heck of a collection here with over an hour of solid music. He even pulls out a piano ballad to close it. Not many highs but not too many lows either, very consistent album. I doubt I will go further into his catalog, but I enjoyed hearing it.

Amadou and Mariam  - Dimanche a Bamako    (2005) - drafted by @Ilov80s in round 32

Amadou and Mariam are a blind husband/wife couple from Mali who sing in French.  I'm more familiar with their Taureg countrymen Tinariwen and Bombino.  A&M's music is similar but probably a bit less guitar heavy and immediately accessible to Rock audiences than the other two artists I mentioned. 

Amadou plays guitar but shared the spotlight with a variety of percussionists.  One song featured harmonica and another a trumpet.  Mariam and Amadou mostly swapped lead vocals; they rarely sang together and when they did, it was almost always in octaves rather than more complex harmony.  My tourist French wasn't adequate to decipher the lyrics but there were a couple of times where English words jumped out.  I don't think many of the songs followed Western verse/chorus structures.  More often there were repeated refrains separated by instrumental breaks.

  It was good walking music with its bubbling polyrhythms.  I liked Camions Sauvages with its chunky rhythm guitar and overlapping vocal lines.

I will put out the bat signal to @Nigel Tufnel since he was waffling a little and reiterate that there is no minimum albums required and no elaborate writeups required.  Just listening to a few from an island for something to do...

4 or 5 should be good - I like what you did with my island. Randomly assign me an island, based on my interests have that island suggest a handful or so and I pick 2 or 3 of them. Then I pick 2 others on my own.

Yeah I'm thinking I will choose 1 or more, have the islander give me at least one "blind" suggestion just based on what the islander is feeling and maybe a suggestion based on my feedback and then see if kp will give a random 50-sided die roll for a totally rando album. Kind of want some immersion on the island I'm assigned to.

I think this is about what I was going to try, but I will be honest - some islands I could go 20+, and some maybe a handful, so I really want to keep it loose and open to other people's schedules and music tastes.  

If somebody wants to do 10 with elaborate write-ups, knock yourselves out.

I'm pretty sure I own a copy of this on vinyl.  1989 was a dark year for promotional copies on vinyl as most labels had switched to CD or even cassettes by then.  I must have found this in a cheap bin of promo LPs.  I'm certain I haven't listened to it since at least 1992 when most of my vinyl went into storage.

Desert Island Take VII

Pick 19:  B-52's, Cosmic Thing (1989).  From comments earlier today, looks like I wasn't the only one who thought this needed to be drafted.  I thought the extra musicians on this version of the band gave them a more rounded out sound without losing their punk edges.

Pick 20:  Pandora's Box, Original Sin (1989).  Yep, more Steinman.  This band idea apparently came from an idea of his that he wanted multiple lead female singers, all of whom sounded like, in his words, "horny angels".  Since this never got a lot of notice, a lot of the songs got re-used in later Steinman projects.

Pick 21:  Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble, In Step (1989).  Got my ZZ, now I need some Stevie Ray to finish up my Texas Boogie set.  Stevie Ray was one of those artists that was really just getting started when he was taken from us - when will the great ones learn to stay off of things that fly?

Alright, basically a triple shuffle.  A little overkill, but I have my list from the post above of the 21 participants.  I am going to do the number sequence randomizer and click it 9 times - at 7 I will write the names of the reviewer, and at 9 I will stop and line them up with the island they are visiting.

Pick 24:  Queensryche, Empire (1990).  Thinking man's metal, prog metal, glam metal - don't really know what to call these guys, but I really like it.  One of the few full-on metal bands that I can think of that the musicianship quality may have been more important than just "crushin' it".
