Desert Island Album Draft - 15th Anniversary Edition - 50 Rounds in the books, sign up now for KP's listening program (4 Viewers)

John Lennon hated most of what John Lennon wrote, too.

I've seen him several times, and he never disappoints.  I see simey now took what I predicted 4086 rounds ago that she would take, and I'm glad.  Definitely my favorite of Lyle's albums, and what I would have taken if not for the Townes snipe.  :)   I don't know if simey chose an island, but I hope it's paddling distance from mine.
I would have taken it much earlier had you not taken Step Inside My House. That crossed you out as sniping. Then Uruk and Wikki didn't make a move, so I started feeling confident it may last awhile. I did wonder if there were other potential snipers I didnt know of, which there was. After Stinky grabbed Argybargy I knew I couldn't gamble it any longer. I didn't choose an Island. Is it supposed to be one that already exist? You're welcome no matter the distance.

Didn't know this existed either
If it is acceptable (Dead Presidents Soundtrack), then the Forrest Gump Soundtrack should be as well. Actually, the Forrest Gump Soundtrack has an original song on it with the Forrest Gump Suite. My computer keeps lagging every time I try to edit.

22.31 - Fall Out Boy - Take This to Your Grave (2003)

#### it, let's get emo

I saw them on this tour at the now-defunct Showplace Theatre in Buffalo, a classic dive music venue.  I think it was my first concert without my parents, I would've been 16.  Went with one of my childhood best friends; I've since fallen out of touch with him after he fell into a pretty serious depression, ended up getting into hard drugs and dropped out of college after our freshman year.  I've seen him maybe twice in the past decade.  He had a kid probably like 6 or 7 years ago now, and last I'd heard he'd finally gone back to school at Colorado-Boulder for electrical engineering as like a 30 year old freshman.  He'll never see this, but I have a ton of respect for him and nothing would make me happier than to know he's doing well.

Anyway, this album is still great 17 years on.  It's impossible to understate how formative this album was for emo and scene kids in 2003 and 2004.

"Grand Theft Autumn / Where Is Your Boy"

"Dead on Arrival"

Ok, let's lead off with a couple of Headstones albums. Seriously, they're pretty good when you consider that they are Candians.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, when it comes to hard rock this band is everything The Foo Fighters would be, if the Foo Fighters were better.

We'll start with 1993

19.37 - Picture of Health

When Something Stands for Nothing

Tweeter and the Monkey Man  (I try to eschew covers, but this is really good)

Bonus Track:  Three Angels

Now, the wayback machine will take us back to late 2019

20.04 - Peopleskills

Caught in a Loop

Dark Side of the Doomed

Bonus Track:  Horses

Triple Bonus, not on any album: Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Full time. My 17 year marriage ended last August but been living with her up until now. I closed on a condo 2 blocks from the Beach about a month and a half ago and have been moving stuff in slowly and ordering furniture to be delivered.

I’ve had an investment house down there with two friends for the last 15 years also that’s literally and figuratively on the wrong side of the tracks so I’ve seen the beachfront area take off. Boardwalk area is great. I love it there now.

I wanted to live there for the Beach and all the live music (unfortunately that part may not start back up for a while). Stone Pony, Wonder Bar, The Saint, Asbury Lanes, House of Indpenants and the Paramount are some of the places with all year live music.

Sorry about the circumstances, but congrats on the move (figurative and literal). Amazing to see the regrowth there. Ocean Grove was my wife and my first weekend away together in 98...hasn't changed much over the years (other than real estate prices). Asbury Park otoh, incredible. We spent a week in OG last summer and ate in AP a few times- some great eats and tons of stores. Plus walking distance to the train. We might be going this summer if we ever leave MD and head back to the city.

I scooped out three gold fish tonight that had ran over the wall yesterday from the deluge. One I wasn't sure about it. It got itself into a pickle being stranded in an area that had receded a lot leaving it on its side and it was barely flopping. When I put it back into the pond it floated straight down and disappeared into the murkiness, while the others swam away. Maybe it was just tired from trying to breathe in the shallow water it found itself trapped in.

24.27: Nick Heyward - North of a Miracle (1983)

Former Haircut 100 frontman cuts the rest of the band and goes it alone.  One of the two picks both make quick appearances in the John Hughes film 16 Candles; see if you can remember the scene.

On a Sunday and Whistle Down the Wind
I gave this a knit sweater over the shoulders, or tucked into the belted trousers "like".

Nick and Level 42 bare knuckle brawl...who wins?

Arcade Fire - Reflektor 2013

Not my favorite, but it's one I play often.  It's Never Over and We Exist are monster tunes.  This is our dance party record.  Here Comes the Night Time!

Songs are...

Reflektor

Afterlife

DP also has an original, guess i cut it off on my cut/paste haste:

"If You Want Me To Stay", by Sly & The Family Stone

"Walk On By", by Isaac Hayes

"The Payback", by James Brown

"I'll Be Around", by The Spinners

"Never Gonna Give You Up", by Jerry Butler

"I Miss You", by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes

"Get Up & Get Down", by The Dramatics

"(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go", by Curtis Mayfield

"Do Right Woman, Do Right Man", by Aretha Franklin

"Where Is The Love", by Jesse Campbell (singer) & Trina

"Tired Of Being Alone", by Al Green

"Love Train" by The O'Jays

"The Look Of Love", by Isaac Hayes

"Dead Presidents Theme" composed and conducted by Danny Elfman

@El Floppo - had no idea you already took "Payback" ... #### is moving way too fast to keep track of all the songs - i'll edit my op to rectify.

ETA: i'll just take the whole pick down if it's off limits ... ruling?

24.25  Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - The Tyranny of Distance (2001)

This is the only album of his that I love---and I love it so much that I'd take it to a desert (deserted?) island.

Biomusicology

Under the Hedge
Well, I did say I wanted to wait and see if people helped whittle down my shortlist, and there we go. :lmao:  I'm in essentially the same boat. Love Ted, and this is the one album of his that was on my list from the start (though I might reconsider one other now). I find side B a bit more sprawling and less focused, but lawd, side A is incredible. "Biomusicology" is a perfect opener, and followed up by "Parallel or Together?" (an absolute favorite)...damn, what an incredible one-two combo.

So I gather around me
All the little pieces of a song
And fit them where they belong

PS. Pick coming in a few.

If there’s music happening and you want to catch a show one night or just a beer if not, send me a PM or something.

@otb_lifer.. figured it would be an easy switch, but also guessed you'd be going with a bad mother...you shut your mouth!

I hadn't listened to the Payback album for a while before taking it...Soo good.

ETA.. and ftr, again- I don't personally care about new stuff or not for the live and soundtrack albums.

23.10 - Beach House - Teen Dream (2010)

Fine, I'll take the same band I pick in all of these drafts again.  I'll mix it up though, I picked [redacted] early in the '10s draft.  My island is unfortunately pretty light on both female artists and dream pop right now, so we'll have to rectify that.

I'm just meandering through this draft, trying to pick what feels best at any given moment, rifling through some of my favorites.  Fired up "10 Mile Stereo" and I just melted into my deck chair with my whiskey sour and vegged out for like 4 minutes.  Yep, that's the pick right there.

"10 Mile Stereo" (Live on Conan)

"Norway"

Funny, Fall Out Boy was the first concert I saw without my parents, PUP is my current most recent concert since right before the virus hit back in late February.  I think they played Peterborough the night before and then Buffalo, first 2 shows on the tour?

PUP at Wayhome is the only time I've ever actually moshed.  Surprised I didn't blow out my shoulder.  If you don't mosh during DVP there's something wrong with you imo.

Played 5-10 shows with them in the Midwest on that tour. It's crazy to think about what they became.

Dead Presidents Soundtrack - Various Artists (1995)

feels like a straight up Brinks Truck heist hauling all of this funkified, soulful goodness on one platter.

 - one stop shop for dialing up some of the best of that early 70s sound i love so damn much ... i'm back in dad's Caddy -

"If You Want Me To Stay", by Sly & The Family Stone

"I'll Be Around", by The Spinners

"Never Gonna Give You Up", by Jerry Butler

"The Payback", by James Brown

"I Miss You", by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes

"Get Up & Get Down", by The Dramatics

"If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go", by Curtis Mayfield

"Do Right Woman, Do Right Man", by Aretha Franklin

"Where Is The Love", by Jesse Campbell (singer) & Trina

"Love Train" by The O'Jays

"The Look Of Love", by Isaac Hayes

Walk On By - Issac Hayes just like "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", if i'm gonna sit for this long, groove my ### like none other could. once this starts i never want it to end.

Tired of Being Alone - Al Green bit of a mood shift from my original pick, but Mr. AL takes a backseat to nobody.

😎

IN.
the spreadsheet says your pick 23.22 says

Dawnrazor - Dreams of Nephilim

does the Dead Presidents Soundtrack replace this ...or become Rd 24 pick?

Yep, Peterborough the night before. That tour didn't make it even halfway before covid killed it. I was near the back in Peterborough, it was no alcohol on the floor and the venue had a nice raised perimeter area for standing - not too unlike where we saw :oldunsure:   :oldunsure:  another band in Buffalo. So I was enjoying it, getting into, having a couple pints, thinking I'd just have a nice relaxed PUP experience... Then the first notes of 'Scorpion Hill' came on and I made a mad sprint to the floor and stayed there thrashing around, dripping sweat with kids 20 years younger than me (it was all ages hence the no alcohol on the floor) for a good 45 minutes

Shuffle been very good to me this batch

Fade Into You - Mazzy Star- Really love this. Sweet romantic song that can't even be spoiled by American Pie movies

Black Math - The White Stripes - I really love White Stripes and love this song but they're just not quite at that need on my island level

Face to Face - Daft Punk - Shuffle doing well by me after giving me all old stuff the other night. This is quadruple groove I think.

Off the Wall - Michael Jackson - Yeah this bangs so hard. Just like Michael with...

Desire Lines - Deerhunter - I was super into these guys for a while. Saw them open for Spoon. This song is awesome, for whatever reason I don't go back to them that much. But I love how this builds and builds and builds.

It's a little late, as I stuck to my other crap, but here was my extended morning mix.  Some interesting transitions in this one...

EVERCLEAR - HEROIN GIRL   I forgot how much some of their songs rock.  Good tune.

DR. DRE - LET ME RIDE    love it.  However, I was a little surprised on my research how little the album as a whole held up.  There were a few tracks in there I could do without

NEIL YOUNG - WHEN YOU DANCE   love me some Neil, and really dig this song.

FUGEES - KILLING ME SOFTLY    here is a song that I didn't like when it came out, and evidently that feeling is still with me

CHEAP TRICK - SURRENDER (LIVE)   big thumbs up here too.  Love this song.

RUSH - SOMETHING FOR NOTHING   I am not the Rush hater that most are, but here is a song where I get where they are coming from.   Made me want to throat punch Geddy.

REPLACEMENTS - KISS ME ON THE BUS   here is band I need to get into the rotation more.   I seem to like most of what I hear, and this is no exception.

NEW PORNOGRAPHERS - MASS ROMANTIC   Ditto to the above.  Added to the research mix to remind myself to listen more

FLOYD - SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND    first time hearing this.  I guess it's OK

MOS DEF - UMI SAYS   really dug this.  Not sure if I've listen to this album, so into the research pile it goes

LAUREN HILL - LOST ONES    I liked this better than the Fugees song, but nothing that made me want to explore farther.

JONI MITCHELL - COYOTE (LIVE)   Not overly familiar with her stuff, but I really liked this one.   I think another of her's came up the other night that I didn't care for as much, so I am keeping an ear open for more to see if it's in the pile or not.

OZZY - OVER THE MOUNTAIN   Oh hell yeah.

DYLAN - IT'S ALL OVER BABY BLUE    ok - how many ####in' times do I have to hear the same ####in' Dylan song , Spotify??!

MILES DAVIS - SO WHAT    I told myself that I was skipping nothing during this sitting, but I will be honest - I have been skipping jazz when it comes up.  I want to hear more, but I have to be in a very specific mood for it, and it never really flows in these mixes for me.   The plan is to sit down with the headphones and listen to the jazz albums in full that are drafted.   I did hear this out and it was good, but just wasn't what I wanted this am.

VELVET UNDERGROUND - OH! SWEET NUTHIN'    -  unlike this.   This was ####in' great.   Pretty sure Loaded was the album that people brought up for people on the fence with VU because it was more guitar driven?   Loved the last 2 or so minutes of this one.

THE POLICE - INVISIBLE SUN   good Police, but not a fave

MAGIC SAM - MY LOVE WILL NEVER DIE   I for sure need to research more of this.

IRON AND WINE - RESURRECTION FERN    it grew on me as it went on, but really not something that I would normally listen to.  Little to much on the folk spectrum maybe?   I would be surprised if this wasn't in my wife's rotation though - sounds exactly like most of her mixes.  (I just asked and got an emphatic nod when I asked about them and said the song title)

OZZY - FLYING HIGH AGAIN   This album is hit or miss for me, and I don't like this nearly as much as the opener and closers

JEFF BUCKLEY - LAST GOODBYE   I really dig this song, and kind of want to explore the album more, but I am afraid that I might accidently hear some of that other song.

FUGAZI - REPEATER   love Fugazi, but haven't listened to them much in that last several years.  That should change.

STURGILL SIMPSON - WELCOME TO EARTH   The 1st 3mins or so were hell on Earth for me.   It definitely got better at toward the end as it got less country-ish.   Still, the butthole is a little puckered knowing how many Sturgill songs I put in the playlist.

SOUNDGARDEN - SEARCHING WITH MY GOOD EYE CLOSED   One of my song choices would have been this if I went with the album.   Love the sludgey sound when the song kicks in.

METALLICA - WHEREVER I MAY ROAM   This song got a mandatory air drum break that had my 5 year old laughing at me.

ROSANNE CASH - SHE'S GOT YOU   Now this song might have been one of the better surprises so far.  Really dug it.

STURGILL SIMPSON - CALL TO ARMS   Oh, #### me.  I saw the artist before the song kicked in, but this one rocked my balls.

TENACIOUS D - ROCK YOUR SOCKS    After my balls were rocked, I got my socks rocked.  Nice 1-2 punch.   Little disappointed Tribute didn't make the mix though.

BLINK-182:  ALL THE SMALL THINGS   nice throw back to college.

JOURNEY - THE PARTY'S OVER    This is an OK Journey song.   Liked the guitar though
