The Last Time - The Rolling Stones - I meant to double back and take an early stones record - Aftermath in particular but I forgot. I should probably make sure they're all taken. This song is ridiculously good. The age old question of The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, this song is both 14/10

Polyanna - Frisbie  - Speaking of power pop (in my last post), here we go. I have absolutely no idea who this band is, I think Krista just drafted them, but they fit right in with the Teenage Fanclub, Sloan, etc... of the world... They actually kind of remind me of The Bigger Lovers.. The build in the "playing polyanna you know" and then the harmonies that kick in immediately after make it. I'm going to go ahead and throw a 14/10 on this as well and listen some more. 

Walkin After Midnight - Patsy Cline - It's a classic, I enjoy and appreciate it. I particularly enjoy the doo-***? stylings behind it. It's not something I'll try to listen to very often but it belongs in this draft/playlist. 12/10

No, no.  - that's why I suggested this way, as we would have some say on what we listen to and I am guessing most of us won't suggest albums to somebody else they think will be absolute ####.  If it doesn't click, so be it - but I am guessing that with most of us drafting 50 albums most of us have an album or two that you've never heard before, is a blindspot, whatever.    I thought that would be better because:  1.  it takes out the possibility of you getting stuck with something you are sure to hate, and 2.  gives it a more personal touch as we explore somebody else's islands.

If would be great if we could accumulate thumbs up/down ove months or years, though even this lacks as great jazz and classical might feel like a fly in the ointment in a rockin', groovin' stream.

Interesting idea.   I guess that would assume we are doing multiple spins and multiple people will be doing the same albums over time.

This album was referenced earlier, I think by @El Floppo when he took his other masterpiece. I prefer this one but these two albums are clearly the peak of an otherwise all over the place career. It is much higher than my 49th favourite album of all time but I held off because it's yet another early-aughts indie influenced thing. But whatever, it's one of my favourite albums ever and it is an A-L-B-U-M. One story told straight through the album from start to finish. Is that story stupid? Maybe. He loses $1000, meets a girl, makes some bets, gets very very high, loses a girl, finds his $1000, gets very drunk.

It predates Arctic Monkeys but it's that same kind of observational UK songwriting. But it's funny as hell. Maybe it's like Seinfeld. Also, if you hate it, I don't blame you. It is after all a white dude with a heavy English accent speak-singing over electronic beats and pianos. But man I love it.

I don't have any Dylan with me so far and I figured I had one pick to rectify that. To show what a remarkable career Bob has had, I took his 1963 classic but considered his work from 1997. I love both almost as much but on the desert island a little coffee house style may go over better.

Glad you all are keeping this going.  I was super busy Thursday through Sunday and couldn’t keep up. I missed a lot of rounds   

This is a great way to learn about music outside of what I have determined is my narrow scope.   I have learned that I am a bigger fan of Motown than expected.  Alexa has been playing a lot of Stevie and Marvin.

Round 50, in which I tie some threads together.

I mentioned long ago that many of my picks would come from a particular period of my years in Chicago, and that it all kicked off by my seeing an article in the Chicago Tribune about a band that featured an ex-high-school-boyfriend of mine named Worth.  That band was The Moviegoers (named after the Walker Percy novel), another power-pop group that also featured Liam Davis as one of the lead singers along with Worth.  Liam later went on to form Frisbie, my Round 49 pick.

Once we'd reconnected, Worth invited me to attend a show with him and a bunch of friends.  That show was a performance by Dan Bern, whom I chose in Round 44.  That night I met a number of people who would remain close friends and important to my life forever (or at least so far).  One of them was Liam.  Another was Justin, who will be my Round 50 pick.  Justin had recently moved to Chicago from Minneapolis, where he'd had regional success in a band called Pimentos for Gus.  He'd come to Chicago to attend U. of Chicago divinity school but, I was told, "just put out a children's album."

I was kind of taken with Justin, and when he asked me out, I said yes.  Our first date was to see Loudon Wainwright III, my Round 29 selection.  Dating didn't end up working for us, but a great friendship developed that I still cherish.

Unlike Frisbie, Justin went on to become extremely successful in music.  I remember at first being excited every time I'd see an article about him in the New York Times or People magazine (shut up, it's what we read at the hairdresser) or whatever, but it fairly quickly became old hat.  He's been nominated for three Grammys, and though he hasn't won, I don't think losing to the likes of Pete Seeger is anything to be ashamed of!   

If you have little kids and haven't listened, I can't suggest strongly enough that you do.  This is not pre-teen or teen stuff, though - it's really for the smaller ones.  It's the smartest children's music you're ever going to hear, and you'll be thankful to have something kids and adults alike can enjoy.

It's hard to choose just one, but I'm going to go with the one below because it has my favorite "serious" song from Justin - "Moving".  

50.16 - Justin Roberts - Not Naptime (2002)

I won't any to the playlist since they probably don't fit.  If you listen to any on this record, I particularly recommend, in addition to "Moving":  "Not Naptime," "98.8," "Billy the Bully" and "D-O-G."

I'll be honest, I had a good one going for a few months that I was gonna share with you, and then at some point in the last 2-3 years, I lost all of my Spotify playlists except a random one from 2012.  Maybe I'll start it back up.

Tonight's beer summary:

All Together - Prince Eddy's. - I think I've had 8 different All Together beers now. This was the worst but it's still pretty good. It's a small town brewery that makes people pleaser cream ales and the like so this was a stretch for them but good on them. 11/10

C0ckpuncher - Indie Ale House - Old school 11% west coast imperial IPA. This was a 355 ml can shared with a buddy who came to get some beer I picked up for him. Good thing or I'd be on my ###. It's awesome super drinkable for so high test. 14/10

Strictly Business - Town Brewery - These guys I've talked about before. They made the PUP collaboration beer and the One Tree Planted beer. They are the best very good brewery near me (still 50 minutes away). They poached the brewer from a high end Toronto brewery. This beer is awesome. And has sloths on the label. 14/10

So Many Friends Session NEIPA - Prince Eddys - Again, this brewery is just ok but a session beer here and there keeps things on the level. Pretty good for what it is 12/10

Janky - Matron Brewing - This is a small town brewery in wine county. The brewer from a prominent Kingston, ON brewery went and started this. Middle of nowhere. This is their old school IPA. It's very nice 13/10. They made a 4% IPA that is the best I've had. And they make some farmhouse beers that rule.

Another Holland-Dozier-Holland monster.  I almost took this after What's Going On Went.  This is probably my favorite Motown record.  Martha has the voice that I love.  How did this last forty nine rounds, lol.

I wanted one more metal album on my island b/c that is lacking vs. what I actually listen to.   It was a tough choice, and like I said earlier, I probably stress out about the playlist too much, so in the end - #### it, take what I would actually bring along.    It also got me thinking about vocals and what might irritate people more.  It didn't factor a ton here, but I was thinking about something by:  Deftones, Slipknot, Meshuggah, another Opeth, Slayer.    It just got me thinking about what would irritate a non-fan more - screaming like Deftones or Slipknot, or more of a growling like Opeth or others??  Anyway in the end I just took my 3rd (maybe 2nd on some days) favorite metal band from the last 15 or so years.   I assume it's a skip for most, but MAYBE another metal head will dig it.   I know I am a broken record, but yet again I am taking a metal band a lot based on the drummer...

Alright, back to the shuffle.

A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum -  I like this a lot, it's obviously a classic. I'll go all @KarmaPolice here and say I associate it with a movie or TV show but I also feel like it's been many. Despite that it clearly stands alone. It twists and turns a lot for a song of this era. Very nice 13/10

Marry Me - Drive-By Truckers - Rock and roll means well, but it can't help telling young boys lies. It was probably the T-Shirt thread but I saw these guys with The Hold Steady on the Rock and Roll Means Well tour named for this song. Instant 14/10 even for a non Isbell DBT song.

Stars - Hum - I missed this album being taken, I absolutely love this song but also think of them as a one hit wonder 13/10 this is why we should listen to full albums and not just the playlist :lol:

For sure.  I am up for anything that way.  Maybe just leave it completely open?   Pick them all if you want, or if you are trouble deciding ask the drafter for help?   

In the end, I just want it to be fun and a way to get to some stuff we've been meaning to get to or have never listened to fully before. 

ETA:  Also completely open to the # of albums we listen to from the island as well.  Do 2, do 20.   This is stress free stuff...

I've drafted Hum a few times before in our drafts. This album is definitely worth it. Think a more cerebral Smashing Pumpkins with a little more prog involved with it. Better voice, too. 

 
I need to download the original Beavis and Butt head shows.  I really miss watching them destroy the videos, the bands, and each other.

Harness Your Hopes - Pavement - I went through a big Pavement phase a few years back, still like them but listen to them less these days, which is good because this sounding new and fresh but still distinctly Pavement. It says b-side on the playlist, are we sure? It sounds familiar but also new and fresh 14/10

Tear in Your Hand - Tori Amos - I purposely didn't look at who this was, to see if I could figure it out. My guess was Fiona Apple, close, maybe? I do really like this, I was waiting for it to get bigger and then it did, maybe some Kate Bush in here as well. Love the build and then quiet/loud dynamics. 13/10

The Bells of Rhymney - The Byrds - Like The Byrds, like this song, you definitely get their signature sound here. Shares a lot of DNA with I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better but doesn't quite reach the same peak 12/10

That sounds dismissive.  Granted Isbell has a great solo career going on, but 7 out of 10 of my favorite DBT songs are Mike Cooley songs.
