DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (2 Viewers)

Awesome job, Binky!

Mulligan-less here.  Ironically, the song I most frequently found blocking myself with was my initial selection, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," which I picked back when I thought I was doing VBD or timdrafting with subjection to judging or something.  Anyway, I'm keeping it.

Since I'll have to muck with the playlist for everybody else's, hell if I'm not taking a couple of my own

carey_mulligan_a_p.jpg

I thought these guys were going to be huge. But, other than this & "Screw Your Wig On Tight" (& I think one slow jam), they fizzled out pretty quick even on black channels.

"Slide" is a killer jam, though
"Watching You" became famous via Snoop Dogg later.

Disco was as tough on funk bands as it was on rock n rollers.  It was a much smoother sound with less use for horns and guitar solos.  If you listen to "Slide" and "Watching You" back to back, you can sort of tell it's the same band six years further along but the differences are significant.

Unlike Kool & The Gang, but they changed a couple of times between "Funky Worm" and "Fresh" to avoid getting the bends.

It seems the latecomers to 70s funk, Slave aside, fared better going forward than the old guard. Rick James, Lakeside, and the Gap Band come to mind. All had hits well into the 80s with pretty much their original sounds.

If anyone does not intend to take any mulligans, let me know and I will consider your bar this weekend's premiere installment of my upcoming web series Posters in [Imaginary] Bars Drinking Cocktails, a fictitious review of your bar and its jukebox in a mock-interview format.
No Mulligans for me and I'll be drinking alone.

Hope this works as a link to my Spotify list: Link

I'm missing "Baby's Liquored Up, "You're So Vain"" & "Women's Prison" - can't find 'em on Spotify.

26a - John Lennon - Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) - 1970

26b - The La's - Timeless Melody - 1990 (single according to Wiki)

Winding it down, closing the bar. I hope my mulligan on Monday closes it out appropriately. I was never a big Lennon fan, but this fits perfectly. So do the La's as the penultimate track. Thanks to NV for getting me back into them for a second time (it's amazing the things we forget). I might have stolen a song others may have wanted, but it goes back then for a band I can't pass up and an outro that always basically (okay, not necessarily literally) moves me to tears.

Scoob took a song off this album earlier, and I'll take another. It's a great album.

26 - Turtles all the Way Down - Sturgill Simpson (2014)

I can't have a jukebox of my first 50 years (and growing up in the South) without including this fella. This is from a live solo concert he performed in Macon, Ga, 2014. The album (Live: Back to Macon, Ga) was released in 2015. He said this about the song "It was the first song I ever wrote and actually kept, after about 700 tries. ‘Melissa’ was my brother’s favorite song of mine.” His son, Devon, plays guitar on the song, and he says, "My Boy", at the end of it. I'm looking forward to seeing GA in April.

26 - Melissa (live) - Gregg Allman (2015)

Here's to making it to the 50 year mark, and hearing some great music along the way.  :banned:

Yo Mama picks:

I saved my 2 hardest years for last.  So many great and/or meaningful songs for me to choose from and I'm sure I'll change my mind a day from now.  Every time I looked up a song or album, it seemed like they kept coming up in one of these 2 years.  Here's where I'm landing today, but I'm sure I'll regret not taking one of the other great songs on my list.

26.08 - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin (1971)

1971 had so many classic songs it was hard to pick one, but I'm taking the most iconic (to me).

26.08 - Interstate Love Song, Stone Temple Pilots (1994)

1994 had a number of albums I really connected to, and passing on a few of them is painful.  Maybe I'll use my mulligans all on this year just so I can pick more than 1.  I don't think anyone has taken an STP song yet, so that was the tiebreaker.

All artists had to be born to a Jewish Parent. Their religion after was inconsequential. As long as they had a parent who was a member of the tribe, they made my jukebox.

When you have your playlist open on Spotify, look for the "three dots in a circle" button next to Play. It'll give you a drop down menu and one of the options is "copy playlist link". That's how I did it, anyway.
