DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (2 Viewers)

Sheeeet, I think I'm way behind. I'll start pushin' too hard.

One at a time:

9.A - Dear Mr. Fantasy by Traffic 1967 ... song blew me away the first time I heard it. I think it was during a viewing of Go Ask Alice in 10th grade Health class (unsure).

This was pre-internet 1980; it took me years to figure out exactly what song it was and who performed it!

This artist mostly bores me, but like Jose Canseco he pulled a few 500 foot shots to dead left.

These lyrics have haunted me for years.

9.B - Doctor My Eyes by Jackson Browne, 1972
If you've never listened to his first album, which this song is from, give it a try. I listened for the first time ever about 5 years ago and it's become one of my all time favorites. I don't think there's a weak song on that album and a few of them even surpass "Doctor", which I've always loved as well.

I'm pretty sure I can't keep up with four picks a day, so I guess I'll have to be on auto skip.

(Tasker, I picked Hanson juuuuust for you.)

The googlesheet is messed up. Please hold off on your round 12 picks until admin can figure things out.
YOU CAN RESUME PICKS. ROUND 12 CAN START NOW

** I need to go back and add some picks after 1:18 yesterday. So if you are checking the sheet for song picks, give me 30 mins or so. I will say when the sheet is up to date

OK, Google Sheet is up to date

This is what I have for skipped picks

12.09a - Are You Gonna Be There (At The Love-In) - The Chocolate Watchband - 1967

12.09b - Folk Death 95 - Mogwai - 2006 - Mr. Beast

Of course I love both of these songs. Are You Gonna Be There...is one of my favorites from my twenties, culled from the Nuggets box set. It's Disc 4, Song 1, IIRC. Just a monster riff and a leering sort of vocal, imploring one to be at a love-in, which seems paradoxical.

Mogwai's Folk Death 95 is simply one of the best and most beautifully recorded bits of music I've ever heard (to me, of course, everything is subjective). The buried vocals of "Mogwai/punk rock/auto rock/Mogwai" is so cool to me, and so meta that I just love it. Mogwai has always thrown in some buried vocals on the tracks -- there are none cooler nor more succinct than these.

eta* I messed up the release date. It's 2006 for Mr. Beast. And nobody seems to agree upon the name. P4 has a period, WIki doesn't and then does.

Round 12

a) The Doors- 5 to 1, 1968

not the best Doors song but always resonated with me, probably that bass line. I thought this had that jukebox beat. Has some nice guitar work by Krieger in there as well

b) T REX- Bang A Gong, 1971

Had to get in on the T Rex run

I see this was already drafted

I love this guy. Insert megatons of hyperbole.

10. A - Life on a Chain by Pete Yorn, 2001
You mother####er
Loved his debut album (especially this song) but haven't really cared for his subsequent releases. I saw him in concert on his first tour and thought he was going to be huge but that never really panned out. He's due to release a new album this year---hope it's a return to form.

I thought I would be the only one with a Hootie tune by drafts end. Good one Tim.

I'm going with

12.1A? Time - Pink Floyd -1974 (release)

I was on the green monster early last season with my son watching Sox-Yanks. There was a challenge on a call, and during the delay they played Time. The speakers were right next to us and it was freaking cool (and loud). All of a sudden they jumped outta Time and into I Want You Back (Jackson 5) and the place went bananas. Anyway, my Jukebox will have to be set to always play those two together now that I have both.

I like this song. There aren't many Doors songs I don't like.

Gonna space my picks out today. I'll start by filling in some of the missing years.

12.18a - Al Green - "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" (1973)

A very famous back beat with The Reverend Al Green himself crooning over it. What more could one need?

Bonus grainy video of a Soul Train performance. He's got his right arm in a sling but he's got a rose in his left hand for the entire song. With the live clip, you can really tell he's got an incredible voice.

1966 - The Supremes - "You Keep Me Hangin' On"
1967 - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"
1968 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "All Along the Watchtower"
1970 - Toots & The Maytals - "Pressure Drop"
1971 - Bill Withers - "Ain't No Sunshine"
1972 - Stevie Wonder - "Superstition"

1973 - Al Green - "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)"
1977 - Bob Marley - "One Love/People Get Ready"
1978 - Earth, Wind & Fire - "September"
1979 - The Sugarhill Gang - "Rapper's Delight"
1983 - Lionel Richie - "All Night Long (All Night)"
1984 - Billy Ocean - "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)"
1987 - Eric B & Rakim - "I Ain't No Joke"
1988 - Bobby Brown - "My Prerogative"
1989 - Bell Biv Devoe - "Poison"
1990 - A Tribe Called Quest - "Can I Kick It?"
1992 - Mary J. Blige - "Real Love"
1994 - Aaliyah - "Back and Forth (feat. R. Kelly)"
1995 - Mobb Deep - "Shook Ones (Pt. II)"
1996 - Fugees - "No Woman No Cry"
2000 - OutKast - "B.O.B."

We can't have a Detroit jukebox without some Motown and it can't be the standard Motown hits. We need some deeper cuts.

12A

Because a true dive bar is always smokey....

1966- The Miracles (Come 'Round Here) I'm the One Your Need

12B

Every great bar should have a great end of the night song. Many bars might play the same tired tune, but an original like Howell's often closed up shop to this:

1967- Gladys Knight and the Pips - It's Time to Go Now

12.29a - Wilco - Jesus, Etc - 2002

This hit my playlist on the way into work and I started praying I had a slot for the year. Also, surprised to see this break the Wilco seal. Figured they'd find their way into this a little earlier

12.xx Fleetwood Mac - Bare Trees (1972)

This is by far my favorite iteration of this band. I didn't hear this album until well past my oversaturation point with their later period, overplayed stuff. This album was a welcome breath of fresh air when I first heard it.

12.xx The Doors - LA Woman (1971)

My drug addled uncle (at that time, he's now clean) got me into the Doors at very young age (10-ish) and I wore out every one of their albums. Gotta have some Doors in my playlist.
