DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (3 Viewers)

This thing is moving too fast! I'll catch up tomorrow but I'm thinking I'll grab...

Salt-n-Peppa, Let's Talk About Sex 1990

A nice ice breaker for my bar Jukebox, in the abyss year of 1990.

Whatever round. a - Joey Bada$$ - "Waves" (2012)

Best rap track of the last 5 years, at least. #### it. Kid was like 17 when he released this.

Since 95, mama been workin 9-5,

And I know the landlord fed up with our lives

So we pray to the Gods, the Jahs, and the Allahs,

To keep us safe and watch our lives

Cause all we tryin to do is do good

Put on my hood when I walk through hoods

Cause these #####s these days is loco,

Get it in yo vocals if you ain't local

Yeah

That's why I'm tryna go global

Yeah

That's why I'm tryna be a mogul

I'm hopeful that me spittin this soulful

Will have me in the daily postal

Flyin coastal, eatin tofu

Like I told you

I know #####s who trash rappin

Worried bout the trendin fashions

Rather than descending passion

They want me send em tracks

But I just send em laughin,
Right after I start laughin,

They start askin em what happened,

But back to the chapter

Mama told me follow dreams,

You'll never have to ask her to

So that's what I do

Became an MC master

Since then it's been a disaster for you

And your favorite rapper

Go ahead ask him

Who is Joey Bad?

Watch him gasp,

Asthma

Damn it's so sad

He pulled the chatter

Because he know he'd rather back up

Than to admit the kid is hotter than magma

But #### it

You gotta give credit where it's due

Cause you aint' gon like karma when it's set up on you

They gon get you in your medical

#### you up in the decimal

So get you two degree for residue found in your retina

Uhh

And they told me not to be so complex

Never doubt to accomplish

Articles in Complex

And The Source

Alfredo of course

There I go again,

Steppin out of line

Runnin off course

I heard reports

That it's like sexual intercourse

Which you thought

When I talk about the shoes

In which I walk

For it is not forced

Known forth that this kid from the north

Speaks with force of course to reinforce the source

I'm sure by now

You can assume he never lost

Unless it was some form of divorce

Or a corpse

No days off

Child labor

Let me see those in favor

And spin that back like tornadoes

Round 14

New Pornographers,

That's my favorite New Porns' song, mostly because of her voice. I like most of her solo albums even more.

I like Bejar's solo albums more too.

I can take or leave AC Newman's work.

So, for me, the sum of it's parts is greater than the whole when it comes to the New Pornographers.

Round 14

New Pornographers,

I consider "7/4 (Shoreline)" to be my favorite song of all-time. It would've been my first-round pick if it fit my mix. We had a best songs of the 00 draft at some point and I think it was my first round pick. Broken Social Scene is amazing. Lisa Lobsinger kills it live, but ### #### I would love to see Feist perform it sometime.

New Pornographers are right up there with my favorites (I love Canadian supergroups, sue me) and that's a nice choice too. I'm pretty sure I love your mix.

Whatever round b - K-Ci and Jojo - "All My Life" (1997)

Steal of the draft imo

The ultimate 90s slow jam. The ladies love it. The fellas love it. My wife and i used to hook up to it.

I still remember all the words to this. It's Valentines Day, guys. This is a fantastic karaoke ballad for that special girl in your life. Let 1/2 of Jodeci tell your girl how you really feel.
Poor "De".

I'm having a hard time finding a spot to fit a pure panty dropper into my draft. It is vexing.

15.a - Alkaline Trio - 97 (1997) -
Now there's a name I haven't heard in forever. Used to be very into them in early college in my pop punk/emo phase :bag: . Good stuff.
There is no shame in that game. It's on the rebound these days with the kids.
Loved the Trio. Kickass band. I saw them twice in concert. Once was real fun, the second show was one of the worst concerts of my life. Skiba was so screwed up they had to get a second guitar player to stand off stage and play his guitar parts. I don't even think the volume was on for his guitar. He mumbled and slurred his way through the show, but it was bad.
Sounds about right for the Trio. I found out about them in Fells Point, MD, at this great record shop at the end of the strip I used to go to when I lived in MD. I played the hell out of this album (Alkaline Trio - Alkaline Trio). Total impulse buy gone right, and I've begun listening to them again. Strangely, the A.V. Club had an article about the song "Clavicle" off of #######it about a day or two ago (spoiler alert: I've been listening to them so much, I was going to take them anyway.) Guess it's Valentine's week.

Do y'all have pool tables in your bars? I do. I was in a pool league when this song came out and, I swear, I shot better every time it came on. I suck at pool most times, but am like an idiot savant every once in a while where I can beat anyone. I was smoking a pipe then and people would laugh because I smoked it like a cigarette - until I'd run the table. They were caught in the.....

16A: "Crossfire" - Stevie Ray Vaughan (1989) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPBRzwIjgv4

There are some songs where I just fall in love with the woman singing it. I don't care if she looks like Shirley Hemphill from What's Happening.....doesn't matter. This song ####ed me up the first time I heard it and the atmosphere built around her voice drives the stake deeper.

I got into them right after high school. I was smoking a lot of weed and was in kind of a post high school/early college depressed stage of my life (01-03). I had a real ugly break-up with a very serious GF and all I did was party, but the partying felt empty and I was worried about what I was actually going to do with my life. I had a new semi-GF that I really hated, but she was hot and put out. I had a huge crush on her best friend and was desperately trying to figure out how to switch girls, but I was trapped. Luckily, this was also he era of Limewire, so my friends and I were getting high and stealing music all day long. Somehow we stumbled on the Trio and it just spoke to us. The lyrics were dark, twisted, but not without a sense of humor. The emo-punk equivalent to Chandler

 Only a last minute change of heart stopped me taking this band with my 1992 pick.

My upcoming '92 pick couldn't be further from this record if it was a soundtrack of Donald Trump getting his teeth cleaned by chainsaws. Well, maybe not THAT far off, but close.

Exactly. Tons of weed an an ex. I'd had a girlfriend gone wrong, and This Is Getting Over You was so defiant, mang.

But the Trio moved on, as did we all, and all was good.

'97 is about court orders and weed and accelerated rehabilitation. And Clavicle is a sweet song. So is Trouble Breathing, Nose Over Tail, etc.

They're romantic love songs, which is why their logo is a skull and a heart. Good Hot Topic stuff, but also just good in general.

Great Alkaline Trio lyrics (now that I am binging on them)

"Never had a drink I didn't like. Got a taste of you, threw up all night."

"Cause if ### holes could fly, this place would be busier than O'Hare."

"Shakin like a dog #### ting razor blades"

"I picked my teeth up off the ground like they'd been there before."

"One of these days it's gonna catch up to you, throwing looks around like that."

Awesome.

"Your voice like the sound of sirens -- to a house on fire."

"Don't forget to let your life rot you inside out."

"I've got a big fat ####### bone to pick, with you my darling."

"A thorn in my side like the size of a Cadillac."

"I said I'd be bothering you soon. You said, 'don't bother, please do.'"

"Sun was up for far too late today/and I can't see straight/but the two of you look awfully pretty...

You're ####### beautiful!"

They really are Chandler/Cain-esque. Here are quotes from those authors, each could totally have been in an AK3 song.

"To say goodbye is to die a little."

"I was as hollow and empty as the space between the stars."

"I'm killing time and it's dying hard."

"I loved her like a rattlesnake loves a rabbit."

"Stealing a man's wife, that's nothing, stealing a man's car, that's larceny."

So awesome. Who is Cain? The biblical Cain or literary? I do not know.

I love the normative implications about legal history and the last quote. Okay, done dorking out on my end. AK3 is wonderful in my world.

James Cain is an author that has a similar stye to Chandler or Hammett. He wrote Double Indemnity, The Postman Always Rings Twice and Mildred Pierce.

Yeah, it's dark stuff for sure. Cain had the (good or mis-)fortune of having the movie adaptations of his books being well made and well received. So much so, that people often don't realize they were even based on books. On the other hand, Chandler had one great adaptation, one pretty good adaptation and a ton of total duds so people always remember the books. As a side note, Chandler (with Billy Wilder) adapted Cain's Double Indemnity book into the film's screenplay. It was the only time Cain ever said he saw a movie adaptation of his book and thought, "I wish I would of thought of that" referring to the legendary dialogue in this classic scene.

Since I'm on here, might as well post for the day. With it being Valentine's weekend, I'll continue with the love theme. I'm sure there will be a lot of couples at the bars tonight toasting to the security, pleasure and comfort their significant other has brought them. I always liked the old time couple. You know them, they come to the same bar together, at the same time and same night every week. Same drink order, same jukebox selections. These songs are for them and all those that have found not just a lover, but a best friend.

16.x

2013- Charles Bradley Strictly Reserved For You

2015- Chris Stapleton Tennessee Whiskey

Yeah, I'm with Ilov80s on this.

From the traditional to the non-traditional. Knew we were getting another Thunders song in here. Should be within the live year requirement unless the months are off -- can't find it. One of my favorites of the past year. Tallahassee is just a stomper romper bomper. Then again, so is Pirate Love.

16.a - Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon - Tallahassee Lassie - 1959

16.b - The Heartbreakers - Pirate Love - 1979 - (live) Max's Kansas City

I'm sure there will be a lot of couples at the bars tonight toasting to the security, pleasure and comfort their significant other has brought them. I always liked the old time couple. You know them, they come to the same bar together, at the same time and same night every week. Same drink order, same jukebox selections. These songs are for them and all those that have found not just a lover, but a best friend.

I've been hearing a lot about Chris Stapleton but can't say I've ever listened to him. Will have to check it out.

1959? Though this was back to 66? 50 years
I think we get recorded mulligans, in a way. Maybe not. I'll re-pick if not in the spirit of the draft.

eta* Pretty sure we get five pre-'66 songs and then wipe out a year if need be.

eta2* I've got another one queued up if this is an issue for drafters. I'm just doing Valentine's Day with a romper.

I think you're fine. You can replace up to 5 years in the 1966-2015 mix with 5 years prior to 1966. Plenty of pre-1966 songs have been picked.

My understanding is 5 pre-66 songs to stand in for post 66 years. I have already drafted 5 pre 66 songs.

Round 14

New Pornographers, Letter From An Occupant (2000)

They Might Be Giants, Birdhouse in Your Soul (1990)

There, now I have Neko Case in my jukebox. Love Mass Romantic, though I would've loved to take a different New Pornos song with Case vocals, if the year were free.

Got a little worried about 1990 with all the talk about it being pretty barren, but "Birdhouse in Your Soul" is awesome, and a great sing-along.

Round 15

a-ha, Stay On These Roads (1988)

Broken Social Scene, 7/4 (Shoreline) (2005)

Morten Harket's voice is a thing of beauty, and I love the energy on "7/4 (Shoreline)".
I consider "7/4 (Shoreline)" to be my favorite song of all-time. It would've been my first-round pick if it fit my mix. We had a best songs of the 00 draft at some point and I think it was my first round pick. Broken Social Scene is amazing. Lisa Lobsinger kills it live, but ### #### I would love to see Feist perform it sometime.New Pornographers are right up there with my favorites (I love Canadian supergroups, sue me) and that's a nice choice too. I'm pretty sure I love your mix.
BSS is one of my favorites as well. YFIIP is a great album and their live shows are fantastic.
I am a BSS magnet. I saw Kevin Drew open for Modest Mouse 2 years ago, and all of a sudden it was a BSS reunion with Feist and Emily Haines (Metric).

Then last year at Wayhome, Passion Pit had to cancel last minute and a mystery substitute was announced - which again was Broken Social Scene. Nice benefit of being near Toronto, I guess.

Stapleton has been around for a long time as a songwriter for other artists. He was also the original lead singer and songwriter for the bluegrassy band The Steeldrivers. The guy that took Stapleton's place in the band is good too.

:lmao:

"Suppose you get down off of the motorcycle and give me a ticket" Chandler written line

"How could I know that murder could smell like honeysuckle?" Cain written line from the book

Their styles just mesh so well. Too bad they didn't work together on anything else. The again, it's a miracle Chandler ever worked on anything with anyone as he was so ### #### drunk all the time.
No kidding. Holy cow. I love my internet friends.
Chandler was a legendary drunk. While working on the script for "The Blue Dahlia" he was under such extreme pressure and writer's block that he told Paramount there was no way he could finish the movie sober. He got Paramount to get him a Cadillac and a driver to be stationed at his 24 hours a day and a live-in doctor to hook him up to an IV of glucose so that he could drink around the clock and finish the script. Some saw it as the ultimate sacrifice of an artist to risk his health for a movie. Most saw it as the cunning plot of a degenerate. Either way, it worked. The screenplay was done on time and Chandler got to drink on the job. The final 8 days, the producer said, "Chandler did not draw one sober breath, nor did one speck of solid food pas his lips. "

This will be my last book/film comment since this is a music thread.

Ironic that he really hit it big as a solo artist doing a cover song.

16a - Gregory Isaacs - "Cool Down the Pace" (1982)

Speaking of slow jams and panty droppers, I would be remiss to omit The Cool Ruler from this mix. I mean the guy practically invented a genre of music called "lovers rock". It's impossible to listen to this and not have a good time. Bonus live version

And so I told her
Cool down the pace for me little woman
You're coming in to fast for me
Cool down the pace for me little woman
That's not how it should be

She said she would try
She just dunno why
She keep on trying be she can't
And so she do it how she want
