DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (7 Viewers)

This will probably get me thrown out of this thread, but Tom Waits is a sham. His early stuff - before he decided croaking was the best way to "sing" - wasn't bad. The music behind him is ok, but the "Hey, man, you just don't Get It" from big fans is silly. I get it, alright.
You don't like it cool but he's about as far from a sham as you can get.
Yeah, that was a dumb thing to say. I was almost through a 1/5 of Sambuca when I posted that drivel.

Drunk posting. Always good.

Not many people drink Sambuca. It's good stuff.
Yeah, drunk posting/texting/dialing has always done me well. About a year ago, I caught up with a lady I had gone to high school with. Just a day or two after reconnecting, I drunkenly sent her a message about how hard I crushed on her in school. For some reason, that seemed to kill any momentum I had going. I'm 53 years old :bag:

We are no longer friends, sir. I must kindly ask you to take a long run off of a short pier.
:D It's too cold to swim right now.
Even better. The temps will get you even if you can swim.

I have a zillion other options for 1978, but I really thought "Baker Street" fit in well with what I'm trying to do.

My picks coming up...........................

Since it's Sunday morning, I thought I'd share a couple of my jukebox's most-played Sunday Brunch records.

17A: "As" - Stevie Wonder (1976) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWhMyOs0pCQ

I don't know if I can express how much I love this song. It's funky, but it.......sways, too. I could spend the rest of my life with only Stevie Wonder records and count myself satisfied. This is, though, the one I'd HAVE to have.

17B: "Easy" - Commodores (1977) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XcTyEKSnYg

Lionel Richie hasn't written a lyric that Hallmark didn't already have dibs on, but that ####er knows how to sell "trite" like no one I've ever heard. This song - and the album it came from - will always have a special place in my heart for a lot of reasons that would mean nothing to anyone else.

I know that feeling.

This is one of my favorite TP songs. It is off of his Live Anthology album, which is a bunch of songs that were recorded live over the years. The studio version is on Damn the Torpedoes.

17 - Louisiana Rain (live) - Tom Petty and  Breakers (2009)

This duo is great live...

17 - Boxcar - Shovels and Rope (2008)

Just got Alexa for Valentine's day. Was all set to listen to the mega playlist but I need spotify premium. Bogus.com

Surprised Baker Street made it this long. Who doesn't love that song?
It's been on my short list for about a week now. How many of us associate it with Dave Ramsey?
Who is Dave Ramsey?
http://www.daveramsey.com/specials/welcome?ectid=gaw.daveramsey-brand2

radio talk show host, financial adviser and creator of Financial Peace University.

He's pretty well known, with FPU classes all over the country. I've helped teach one to Soldiers.

17a - The Damned - New Rose - 1976 (single) - also on Damned Damned Damned

17b - Superchunk - Train From Kansas City - 1989 - Tossing Seeds (Singles 89-91)

At the very least, they'll never be out of place on Valentine's Day nor on a playlist. A little obvious, but "Is she really going out with him?" One of the greatest punk rock records ever, and likely the first. One of the greatest punk albums ever. Captain Sensible. Rat Scabies. Dave Vanian. I might have missed a song from 1979, but my live pick blocked it. Superchunk is indomitable, covering the Shangri-Las. Even SNL spoofs the Shangri-Las, which means you've made it. Love them.

Another band or two was supposed to go here, but I'll hold off. I've wanted these two songs all draft. This is where the Shangri-Las come into and influence the draft, and rightfully so.

Queens represent.

Love New Rose. Except, every time I hear it I think its im the one by the desendents (or all, cant remember which one)

a) Amy Winehouse- Back to Black, 2006

What a great album this was. I did not ever get her first album, but I was entranced by this one. Tasker might be able to dig out an old thread from :sj: and can confirm that I was really into this for a long time. A great talent. I would have liked to have seen her put out some more. Need to add that first album to my list of things to listen to.

b) Matthew Sweet and Susana Hoffs- Maggie May, 2009

Thanks to this draft, I found these albums. Thanks zamboni. Anyway, I love this song, love this version and best of all, it fit my theme. WIn-Win

It's the Descendents. Off of Everything Sucks. It's weird -- I remember giving that album to my friend and telling him to keep it; that lyrics (in general) sucked. (I was very into post-rock those days.)

I guess I can hear it.

eta* I love The Descendents, BTW.

17.24a What I Got - Sublime - 1996

17.24b Go! - Plumtree - 1997

Sublime - what could've been. Ended before they started really. I really regret not having seen them live since I was in SoCal at the time.

Plumtree - the song is just fun despite being pretty much lyricless. My 2 year old likes running around/being chased then abruptly stopping to count.

Don't forget that there are three of the Sweet/Hoffs records; someone (probably not zam) said there were only two. The third/most recent is arguably the best.

Winehouse was so, so talented.

Those Sweet/Hoffs records are full of all kinds of good stuff. I picked "You're So Vain" because of how I'm gonna sort my songs when we're done, but you can't go wrong with any of them.

Hoffs could sound like Bobcat Goldthwait and I would like anything she did.

17.a Alan Parsons Project, "Sirius/Eye in the Sky" (1982)

A pick I stockpiled mentally since the draft began and was, somewhat amazingly to me, not sniped on, probably because I consider 1982 to be a pretty deep year. "Sirius" is an awesome, iconic instrumental that begins with a pulsing bass doubled by a guitar and by the end incorporates three different synths and even some strings before the bass/guitar undertone leads into "Eye in the Sky," a love song that can also be about the modern-day surveillance state if you want to take an inspirational interpretation of the lyrics. Fantastic lead vocals by the late Eric Woolfson, particularly the two high-pitched concluding lines to the each verse ("And I ain't gonna take anymore/Believe me/The sun in your eyes/Made some of the lies worth believing" and "Cause I ain't gonna live anymore believing/Some of the lies while all of the signs are deceiving".) As a bonus, you can close your eyes and imagine the appropriate frenzied sports introductions in a cheering arena. Thank you to anyone who waited too long to draft this one.

17.b Taylor Swift feat. The Civil Wars, "Safe & Sound" (2012)

Perpetually underrated by music critics - although this is rapidly changing - Taylor Swift is in fact a fantastic, several times-in-a-generation songwriter. This gem, inspired by and used in the first Hunger Games movie, features beautiful backing vocals by The Civil Wars members Joy Williams and John Paul White (doing the ethereal head voice male harmonies), who also provides a nifty fingerpicked guitar arrangement. There's minimal other instrumentation, which is perfect. I always like to trot the numerous live concert videos of this one out as the most obvious counterexample to the tiresome "Taylor Swift can't sing outside of a studio" contention.

To finish up with the Valentine's weekend theme, I'll post two more love songs. One sweet and one more on the bootycall side of things. Both have a country/Southern flair and it surprises me how many songs like that I've taken, but they just seem to fit so well with the dive bar theme.

I haven't been to :sj: in forever. I still try to pop in every few months but I barely know who anyone is anymore.

Another album that came to my attention early in the HS days. They recorded in Madison at Butch Vig's studio, so it was on a loop as you visited the record stores down by campus. Love this whole album, and I would say it's their best. For whatever reason this song has remained my favorite from it, and probably my favorite Pumpkin song.

17th(b): THE SMASHING PUMPKINS - Snail (1991)

For Round 15

Here are a pair of picks from a show together in the late 90's. My opening pick is a band I'd never heard of before this show, and have since become one of my favorites. A Boston band, who at the time were only a trio (since added a fourth) and I loved the way the drummer played mostly bongos and cymbals and other percussion instruments. They can't be that bad, they have made it onto two Keerock Christmas albums!

1999 - Guster - Barrel of a Gun

They opened for The Barenaked Ladies. One of my favorite shows I'd ever gone to. Unlike a lot of bands, they just seem to be having fun on the stage, interacting with the crowd, and not taking things too seriously. Unfortunately, they took a turn down in 2009, when Steven Page left the band. He has such an incredible voice, and lots of their songs are duets, so if you lose one of the voices...

1998 - The Barenaked Ladies - Alcohol
 The version of the Daryl hall tune I posted this round is from gusters appearance on live from daryls house.
Love that show. Makes you realize how good Hall is; he can sing just about anything. Since it's been picked, I can make note of a great 'cover' of Life's Been Good on the DH show. Oh, and great fit too!!

Yo Mama picks:

17.23 - Come Sail Away, Styx (1977)

Dude, they're not angels. . . they're aliens! Whoa!

Needed some more cheesy rock in my lineup and Styx is at the top of that list.

17.23 - Back in Black, AC/DC (1980)

I think this album was played on loop at every high school party I went to.
