DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (7 Viewers)

Ok - catch up time.

Black/Upbeat/Bender Favorites

10.a.: Mark Morrison - Return of the Mack (1996)

10.b.: Bobby Brown - Humpin' Around (1992) - this was an anthem for me when growing up. My parents weren't very impressed with the provocative title but we're liberal enough not to censor what I could listen to. Since there's no chance in hell anyone was picking this, this was a tough one for 1992 because "Games" by Chuckii Booker is a better song - just not as upbeat

11.a.: Chris Brown - Run It (2005)

11.b.: The Four Tops - Baby I Need Your Lovin' (1964) - I like Bernadette, but this is there best IMO

12.a.: George Benson - Turn Your Love Around (1985)

12.b: Ne-Yo - Closer (2008) - my jam

13.a.: Blu Cantrell - Hit Em Up Style (2001) -

13.b.: Major Lazer - Lean On (2015) - one black dude in the group

14.a.: Pharrell Williams - Happy (2014)

14.b.: Outkast - Roses (2004) - One of my favorite music videos too

15.a.: Stevie Wonder - Signed, Sealed, Delivered (1970)

15.b.: The Staple Singers - I'll Take You There (1972)

16.a.: After 7 - Can't Stop (1990) - This wasn't a deep track for me, but I wonder how known it is.

16.b.: The System - Don't Disturb This Groove (1987)

17.a.: Wilson Pickett - Mustang Sally (1966)

17.b.: Billy Preston - Nothing From Nothing (1974)

Phew...don't think I doubled any years or picked anything already picked.

Surprisingly got sniped a number of times since I took some time off here. I had "Creep" by TLC on my short list Eephus.

Pretty sure Tim took your Whitney Houston pick

It was ok. No one wanted that crap anyway :excited:
:excited:

Love these picks.
:goodposting:

Just some playful banter
No, I know. I was echoing your sentiment and I was happy you did that.

eta* Hit Em Up Style made me rethink how good that song was.

I was gonna take that Blue Cantrell song, but it wasn't on my Google either. I love that Jam. Happy was another

Am I the only one who finds Ironic far more indefensible than Mmmbop? I kind of still like Jagged Little Pill, but Ironic might be the worst song on the album.
I would tend to agree. JLP is a terrific album, but Ironic is definitely a bit too whiny and monotonous.
....and of course famously misses the mark on the definition of "irony".
Which makes the song ironic. Pure genius if you ask me.

2000 Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely.

2001 Radiohead - Life in a Glass House This is probably my favorite RH song, off my favorite RH record.

#### it, we're dipping into Spoon and Wilco now. With my 22nd pick, I'm making my first not-black artist pick and first post-2000 pick because I don't want to miss this. I'm not sure I really have any sort of cohesive theme anymore. Got some soul, some R&B, some hip hop, some dance music.....but I need some ### #### guitars.

12.18b - My Morning Jacket - "One Big Holiday" (2003)

This is maybe my favorite song I've ever seen performed live. I have no idea where this fits but it can sit with Hendrix in the jukebox. I think Jim James would be okay with that.

1966 - The Supremes - "You Keep Me Hangin' On"

1967 - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"

1968 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "All Along the Watchtower"

1970 - Toots & The Maytals - "Pressure Drop"

1971 - Bill Withers - "Ain't No Sunshine"

1972 - Stevie Wonder - "Superstition"

1973 - Al Green - "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)"

1977 - Bob Marley - "One Love/People Get Ready"

1978 - Earth, Wind & Fire - "September"

1979 - The Sugarhill Gang - "Rapper's Delight"

1983 - Lionel Richie - "All Night Long (All Night)"

1984 - Billy Ocean - "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)"

1987 - Eric B & Rakim - "I Ain't No Joke"

1988 - Bobby Brown - "My Prerogative"

1989 - Bell Biv Devoe - "Poison"

1990 - A Tribe Called Quest - "Can I Kick It?"

1992 - Mary J. Blige - "Real Love"

1994 - Aaliyah - "Back and Forth (feat. R. Kelly)"

1995 - Mobb Deep - "Shook Ones (Pt. II)"

1996 - Fugees - "No Woman No Cry"

2000 - OutKast - "B.O.B."

2003 - My Morning Jacket - "One Big Holiday"
Hopefully you've been keeping up with the Eat Off thread.

17.xx The Church - You Took (1982)

These guys are not underrated but are definitely underappreciated workhorses. They've released 20+ albums of good to great music since 1981. This is a classic from, arguably, their best album, The Blurred Crusade. It never got much radio exposure (nothing from this album did) but is still a staple in their live shows.

2000 Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely.

2001 Radiohead - Life in a Glass House This is probably my favorite RH song, off my favorite RH record.
It's my favorite Radiohead song, too, off of my favorite Radiohead album. I just picked 2001 before I realized that would be the outro. It's actually what I think of every time a bar is closing down. Good, good ####### work.

I love your picks.

Remind me - if a song's original version was drafted, can we draft a remake by a different artist or a live version?

Very different rounds here. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Round 16

Robyn,

 (1977)
"Lust for Life" is a solid, solid jukebox tune. I played the hell out of my copy of the Trainspotting soundtrack, man.

Interesting. I think Amnesiac is the only album I can't listen to. A couple of my favorite songs are off it, but end up skipping through a few tracks too. Love the different music tastes and opinions in these drafts.

Kid A is my second favorite.  Ok comes in third, then Pablo Honey.  It's a drop off from there.

Not sure what pick this is. I'm keeping a bare-bones list showing only the years picked, and while I thought I had completed round 16, I only show 30 different years selected.

This next song came to me in a dream, literally. Back in the mid-1990s, my clock radio alarm typically went off during Dan Ackroyd's syndicated House of Blues Radio Hour. One of the prettiest blues voices ever ...

1994 - Strange Conversation by Ted Hawkins

I think some tracks off of Kid A and Amnesiac are just fantastic, but as far as listening to them front-to-back, OKC, In Rainbows and The Bends are the easy top 3 for me.

The Bends hasn't held up that well for me.  Rainbows or Hail  never hooked me.  Maybe I'll try again.

I guess I can see that. It certainly doesn't have the aural complexity of Kid A or Amnesiac. I still like the songs better, though. Splitting hairs, though. They're all good.  :)

Yep, those are my top 3.  Amnesiac especially is too inconsistent for me.  I end up skipping 2-3 tracks, so that is probably my least favorite album as a whole.

I am sure that the exact order would change from week to week, but the 3 you listed are my top 3, with The Bends being my favorite.   Next tier would be Kid A and Hail to the Thief.  Tier 3 would be King of Limbs and Pablo, and Amnesiac is bringing up the rear.

For awhile I couldn't listen to KoL at all, but I ended up finally watching the Basement Tapes of them playing that album and really liked it.  Similar to how I felt about Kid A the first time - I revolted against it, but saw them live that tour and the songs sounded great live, and it made me like the album more.  Hopefully the wife and I will get to a show when they go on tour this year.
