DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (2 Viewers)

Yeah, back to regular weekday rules on Tuesday (18/19).

I want to set mulligan rules tomorrow as well.  They'll be limited.

I still owe a few and will try to get to today.

This new board format reeks though.

I notice the "By Drafter" sheet is missing my 15th rounders: "Carnival" - Natalie Merchant, "One Headlight" - Wallflowers

and my 17th picks: "As" - Stevie Wonder, "Easy" - Commodores

All are missing on the master list, too.

That's a new low, even for you.  That song truly blows.

Greatest song ever. The lyrics are an exercise in understanding what Wolfe might call The Purple Decades, especially something straight out of Mauve Gloves, Mad Men, Clutter and Vine.

Round 18a - Sixteen - Buzzcocks - 1978

Round 18b - Repeater - Fugazi - 1991

So I was going to contact Epic Problem and have him pick Epic Problem in proxy for me, but I decided to go with the song that is one of my favorites by Fugazi. Can you pick a bad Fugazi song? Tough sledding. Also picked a little-known Buzzcocks song from Another Music In A DIfferent Kitchen because I'm in the kitchen, whipping up Pyrex goodness. Okay, maybe I'm not, but the thought is what counts, and the way to a man's heart is through his arteries that comes from cooking with Pyrex.

This song was written about Bruce's sister. She didn't know he was writing a song about her, and when she first heard it she hated it. She said everything in the song is true, but she felt exposed by it. She said these days it is her favorite song, and she is still happily married to the same guy she married as a teen. It's one of my favorites by him...

18 - The River - Bruce Springsteen (1980)

Another one of my favs...

18 - Gentle on My Mind - Glen Campbell (1967)

Time to finish off the 80's.  I love both of these bands---two of the best of this decade:

18.xx  The Smiths - Death of a Disco Dancer (1987)

18.xx  U2 - Bad (1984)

U2's last 3 or 4 albums are awful but their first-6-album run from '80 to '91 is fantastic. Bad is their best song, especially live, but I have to take the album version as the live year is not available to me---a great song either way.

DoaDD is surprisingly my favorite Smiths' song and I don't know why.  It just is.

Not super thrilled with either of these picks. I have come the to conclusion that the late 90s early 00s were the worst era of music by far.

18.24a - Rock is Dead - Marilyn Manson - 1998

18.24b - What's My Age Again? - Blink 182 - 1999

Tie breaker for 1999 between Blink and [spotlight] was that I was 23 when the song came out. Blink vid is probably NSFW
I actually really like the first few albums from Manson, so I like that pick.  I agree 100% - I am having a hell of a time trying to find something from '98 and '99 right now.

Eh, I think it has a lot to do with personal taste and the person's willingness to seek out music during the given time period. The '00s were the easiest decade for me to fill out, and I'm thrilled with my picks. I don't have anything set for '96 or '99 yet, but that has more to do with my lack of research than the quality of the music. On the other hand, I'm struggling with the late '60s, and if I were simply looking at the Billboard charts or whatever for those years, I see a whole mess of insufferable crap too. Finding the good stuff wasn't as easy in the late '90s as it is today, but it was there.

For me, 1996-2001 are pretty limited. If I get sniped once or twice I've got nothing I would want to post. That isn't from lack of looking either - just my musical tastes weren't really meshing with what was being put out at the time.

The Kravitz song is excellent.  That is a terrible Kiss song and a terrible choice for 1983.  You have disappointed me Acer since your other choices have been so good.    Then again, maybe it fits your theme.
Yes, I was limited to stay with my theme. I am sure that many of my next picks will further disapoint. Im stubborn, I saw a theme and went with it. Can't back off now

I agree for the most part, and I realize I wasn't keeping up with music as much then.  I think I was digging deeper in the 70s and metal at that time more than keeping current.  I have ideas written down, just no one or two albums that I loved from those couple years, and none of the songs I have written down I am in love with too much either.  I will be curious to look at the year by year list at the end of this to see what I might have been missing.

Agreed. I've saved most of the later years for the end of the draft because each year is 5 or 6 songs deep for me. 95-15 is much deeper for me than the years previous. Two reasons I think---I started making money in 95 so I could afford to buy a lot more music and more importantly, the Internet. Much more exposure and easy access.
