DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (3 Viewers)

AH! Good things come to those who persevere.

I totally backed in to this pick, as I have a Robert Forster solo CD (that I adore), but was unfamiliar with The Go-Betweens. I'm sure I've heard them before, but they never took up residency in my memory bank. I'll wager a thousand timschochet-bucks that JML has forgotten more about this band than any mortal remembers.

Huge fan.  I've selected songs from them as well as Forster and McLennan in previous drafts.  Majorly underrated band.

.... and AA is who's mix I listened to last night and today.  Interesting mix a few I hadn't heard before, but it was a pretty familiar mix (in a good way).  A lot of stuff that I have just forgotten about over the years - heard on radio, but not at all since: ie Staind, Vertical Horizon, 3 Doors Down.   Songs I took from this one:

Spectrum, Heart of the Sunrise, One of these Nights, Slide, Fall Down, Room Without a View, No Reply At All

Spectrum, Heart of the Sunrise, and Room Without a View I hadn't heard before.  Yes is another band I need to listen to more.  As is early Genesis, hence taking that song.  Fall Down was one of those "holy ####, it's that song" tunes.  Not sure I had that album but I remember listening to the other big Toad the Wet Sprocket album to death.  I am not a fan of The Eagles much, but really like that song.  Slide is just a great song I love that I also don't have in my rotation or listen to that album much.

Looks like Zilla is next.

Very glad you liked the mix, KP.  I didn't really design it for anyone but myself so if anyone else likes it that's a bonus.  :)

"Spectrum" is a tremendous piece.  Highly distinctive.  F+M have made a lot of other good music but none of it really speaks to me like that song.

If you want any guidance about Yes listening, please post here or PM me.  I can certainly give you some suggestions and would be totally thrilled to do so.  I'm *really* glad you liked "HOTS" and am a bit surprised, in a good way, that you'd never heard it before.

"No Reply At All" is not quite early Genesis, I'd say; it's more mid-Genesis, when they transitioned from a prog band into a pop group following the departures of Gabriel and Steve Hackett.  That was why the song appealed to me - its musical choices show the band almost exactly in the middle.  Early Genesis would be the first few albums that were very progressive and dominated by Gabriel's ideas.  They have a lot to offer.  So does virtually any era of that band's career, although I recognize that many of the later songs (the ballads, mostly) are disposable.

On "Fall Down," yeah, their first album (I think it's their first album, but we're talking about the same one, _Fear_, from which Mr. Ected took "Nightingale Song" in this draft, a great pick) is really good and by far better known, but I unintentionally blocked myself from taking anything from it.  So I took a listen to "Fall Down," which I had not heard in years, to see if I still liked it from the days when my band covered it.  Yep, really dug it.  In fact there were several songs that I took that I had not heard in years ("Blue on Black" and "In a Little While" also come to mind) where I was hoping that I would like them as much as I once did, and was pleased to find that to be the case.

"One of These Nights" is cool to me because it does not sound like very much else in the Eagles' catalog, at least not among their well-known pieces.  Aurally, to me, it has the most in common with "Witchy Woman," which incidentally is my second-favorite Eagles song.  They're both quite haunting and neither has much twang.

"Slide" is just a little gem.  I think I mentioned that it has personal resonance for me from 1998 when it came out, and the details of that are not important, but it's a "mood song" that instantly takes me back every time I hear it.  I was glad to be able to fit it in even though I listen to it constantly.

I listened to AA's yesterday, and like it a lot. It is missing the song "Amie" in the playlist, but Marco can fix that. AA drafted "Falling in and out of Love" and its companion song "Amie" by Pure Prairie League, but just the first song is on the playlist.
Thanks, simey.  Very glad you liked the mix.  I am so happy with it that I just got it all spiffed up on iTunes (I'm not the biggest Spotify fan) and will be moving it over to the car soon.  This draft was awesome.

Great post.

I would like to hear your thoughts on getting into Yes.  I honestly don't know if I have heard more than a couple of their big hits.  Probably, but that one didn't ring any bells anyway.

Yeah, I had that Genesis album pegged as being a little earlier.  My ignorant ### just lumps all pre-Invisible Touch as early Genesis though.  ;) Guess I have early and mid Genesis to listen to then.

Evidently it's not their first album, but yeah I was talking about Fear.  Wore that one out, but never listened to anything else from them for whatever reason.

I do wonder if I like that Eagles' song because of that - has a different feel to it.

Slide also has a personal meaning for me from that time too.  What is it about that song??

Zilla's mix was more hit and miss for me than I was expecting, but still found some great tunes.  I thought my Dogs pick was the jukebox killer, but he had to show me up with some Rush ;).  Also, surprisingly some of the more metal songs weren't in my wheelhouse.  That said, I still had a hard time narrowing down the songs I wanted.  Had I not taken a Genesis and INXS song, those would have gone, as they were great.  Here is what I did add:

Kicks, Stranglehold, Rebel Yell, Wake Up, Faded, Cut Your Ribbon, Artificial Nocturne

The last four I listed were all new to me.  Don't know how, but have never really listened to that Mad Season album - just River of Deceit.  Wake Up might have been my favorite on the mix and listened to it a couple times.  Also loved Cut Your Ribbon, and it was bothering the #### out of me as to why it sounded familiar - then I read it was a post At the Drive In Band. I loved them, and almost took a song of theirs for the draft, but for whatever reason didn't know this existed.  Listened to a little Mars Volta, and didn't get into it much, but I guess I should have been listening to this instead.  The first 3 songs listed are just filed under the great songs I love that I don't come across much.

Thanks Zilla - looks like Yo Mamma is up next....

Finally finished ilov80s mix today. So far, I would say his list/musical taste is more similar to my own than the other lists. About 20-30% of his list is part of my regular rotation. Hadn't heard The Von Bondies song which I really liked and added to my playlist. Had totally forgotten how much I liked that Danzig song in high school and any list that has a song (the Pogues) featured in The Wire gets a  . Not sure I am going to add the Lou Rawls song but it is nice to know the original. One of my son's Ice Age movie has some version of it. Next up AA.

So far Yo Mamma and I seemed to be the most in step with our drafts of the ones that I have come across.  I would say about 2/3 of his draft was stuff that I had written down to take, and he sniped me a couple times - Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters come to mind.  I had hear most the mix, but there were a couple new songs to me, mostly the rap stuff on the list.  Here is what I stole from his mix:

Somebody That I Used to Know, Reelin' in the Years, Separate Ways, White Unicorn, Boom Boom Pow, Magic Carpet Ride, Stronger

The only new ones to me were the Black Eyed Peas and Kanye songs.  Never given either a really good listen for whatever reason.  Everything else was just stuff I love but don't usually hear.  Another great mix!

Looks like Marco is up next....

Booo - page 8?

Listened to Marco's mix.  Like Yo Mamma, Marco seems to be in my wheelhouse most of the time.  If I remember from past drafts, I always seem to mine his mixes a bit for new stuff, and this was no different.  A lot of songs that I had considered in this mix as well.  Songs that I put on my mix:

Visions of Johanna, So It Goes, Blood and Roses, Here's Where the Story Ends, Come to the City, Seasons, The Rat

Others have admitted it during this draft, but Dylan is just somebody I can't get into very often.  Hardly any songs that I really love, but this is one of them.  The Nick Lowe, Future Islands, and The War on Drugs songs were all new to me.  I had strongly considered the Sundays songs, and may have gotten sniped, but I am not 100% sure on that one.  The Rat is also a song I really dig, but don't ever listen to any other stuff from The Walkmen.

I am not sure who's it is, but it looks like Howell's Jukebox is next....

Visions of Johana is the best Dylan song. No doubt about it.

Thanks for listening and for the feedback. I definitely don't have the depth of music knowledge a lot of the other drafters have, but I have fun with these drafts and learn a lot of new music (and remember stuff I haven't heard forever) in these drafts.  This was a blast.

I lost track of who some of these mixes belong to.  I listened to Howell's Jukebox today.  Damn nice mix - a lot of perfect jukebox songs to crank up.  Featured my least favorite GnR song, but I get why it's there.  It is just a song that usually gets a skip or station change from me.  I think this list got the most amount of songs that I loved and put on my running mix that were completely new to me - 5. Here is what I added:

Stay Fly, Mother, You Got Me, Getaway, Drunken Lullabies, A More Perfect Union, Running on Empty

Mother is just a great song that I haven't heard in the longest time.  Same with Running on Empty.  The other 5 were all new for me.  I thought that Dr. John song was fantastic, and listened to that one a few times in a row.  Right up there for favorite new song of the draft.  Lots of good rap on this mix, but these two songs grabbed me the most.  Great mix whoever put this together!

Next up looks to be our draft captain Eephus...

Loving your reviews, KP.
Thanks - I feel the reviews are similar because I doubt there will be a mix that I just don't like.  Every one had something on there for anyone listening I would imagine.  Only a few songs that I have skipped out of the 500 or so listened to.  I have added so many albums to my queue to listen to because of this draft.  I have enough new music to explore to last for months, and that is what these are all about for me.

KP, did you subject yourself to my list yet? I tried searching for your review, but using the search function here is beyond me.

Thanks you sir, glad you enjoyed the playlist.

Of course.  You teased me with that about 2 weeks ago.. ;)
:D   I did.  I haven't forgotten!  Just need to figure out a way for me to type a post in the FFA guiding a new listener about Yes without curing anyone or everyone's insomnia and/or breaking the board.  In other words, containing myself and keeping it digestible. ;)  I'll figure it out.  Meanwhile, I'll start with Genesis (heh; sounds appropriate), which should be easier for me to be succinct about.

Just let it all out.  I enjoy learning more about old and new music.  I think that's why most of us are in this draft.

Bob started the Todd thread - its liberating.  So much goodness out there.

I've listened to playlists by Ramsey Hunt Exp, sn0mm1s, AcerFC, Uruk Hai (I think), Simey, Tasker, NV and KP.  I'm not as organized as KP but I've enjoyed listening to them all.

Most playlists I normally listen to on Spotify are more tightly formatted by artist, genre and time period.  When I shuffle through the jukebox, the next track could be almost anything recorded in the past 50 years.  It's always a surprise and pretty much always a pleasant one.

I have not, but I promise I will.  I have been skipping around a little bit, but I will be honest - your's was after Simey, but didn't know if I could do that much countryish music back to back. :bag:  Wanted a slight break, but will get to it a couple days so I can give it an honest go.

For Yes - I put Fragile, Close to the Edge, and Relayer on my Spotify queue last night.  Will be interested to see what AA and others suggest for listening though.

While perusing for content for my country music mix I discovered some heretofore unheard Calvin Russell clips from 1983. Holy #### this guy was good. Sadly I did not discover this guy until around 1998.

Crack in Time

This is my Life
Threw together a quick 20 song mix of Calvin Russell on the off chance anyone is interested. He and Hugh Dillon rank side by side at the top of my rankings of great artists I love that nobody has ever heard.
