DMB .. yes, this is the Dave Matthews Band thread (1 Viewer)

I get this line of thinking, but for me, while the long live jams are fun to throw on once in a while, they aren't something I want to hear all the time.  For example, Jimi Thing is one of those songs they seemingly always turn into a 15-minute plus live song, and as a fan of the song, I usually just want to hear and enjoy the song without having to dedicate that much time to it, so I will almost always opt for the studio version, which is aces.

I am by and large a studio album guy.  There are probably 25-30 songs in my entire collection where my go-to version of a song is a live one, with U2 probably having half of those, and DMB having maybe 4-5 (JTR, One Sweet World, Minarets, The Song That Jane Likes and maybe When the World Ends).
I'd definitely steer clear of Phish then.  Talk about long jams.   I love a good jam but some of their live stuff is just ridiculous.

I like a few songs by Phish, but never really got into them too much.  As much as I love some prog rock and a great long, well-written epic, the type of long jams that bands like DMB and Phish do are more fun live and really don't do a lot for me when doing my 'every day music listening.'

Dmb music seems to be aging well.   A lot of long format stuff is holding my attention from OAR and even counting crows.

The live tracks cut with Tim renolds are my favorite live ones.

Was somewhat sure there was a huge thread here before though.

I'm a pretty big fan. They are top 10 for me, but not top 5. I've seen them live at least 5 times.

Definitely prefer the early stuff to the more recent stuff.

Agree with the poster that liked their Watchtower cover. I like all of the versions by Hendrix, U2, and DMB, so not sure I would rate DMB's as clearly the best, but it's very good.

Ridiculously awesome.
It’s an acquired taste. I first thought it was incredibly stupid and terrible. Then in college I saw the light and loved it. I listen to it on occasion these days and shuke ain’t wrong.

Close buddy of mine loves Phish ... despises DMB.

I’ve never given Phish the chance however - as a lifelong Dave fan, are they worth checking out?
It’s nothing like Dave. The only similarity is that college kids obsessed about both in the 90s.

As a fan I would say of course.  Hard to point you in a starting direction, though.

Actually pretty easy. The Phish “A Live One” live album is easily the most accessible way for someone to know what the band is basically about. There’s studio albums and endless live recordings available out there, but I think this is the obvious introduction to Phish.

You should give that 30 minute tweezer on Shuke's live album a shot.   You'll love it.

I can jam to red rocks all the time.

My Step Mom apparently knows the drummer however I have never really dig deeper.  It’s my step mom...

DMB show at Golden 1 Center in Sac on Saturday was great.  Lots of fan favorites as well as a couple of deep cuts.

Highlights for me were:  Warehouse, Grey Street, and Typical Situation.  Then, he "closed" the show with a run of Everyday and Ants Marching which was fantastic.  Then, the encore was Granny and Stay (Wasting Time).  Damn that was good.

Hoping Chase Center tomorrow will be even better.

I am 60 miles to the West and can deliver.  I think there is a truck stop about half way.

Hey, I didn’t know this thread existed.  Would have been really useful when I was looking for patchouli and a mesh trucker hat.
Patchouli? Try Phish/D&C. Mesh trucker hat? Maybe Bonnie Prince Billie. Backwards Sigma Chi hat? DMB got you.

Opening night of their 2021 Summer Tour. Live from Raleigh, NC on Sirius XM. Opened with #41, Granny, Grey. :drive:
They are continuing the Friday night concert series again for this tour....so awesome! Going to Alpine to see them for the first time in 18 years. Can. Not. Wait.

Wife and I have tickets for both nights at Fiddler's Green. My son is seeing them in PHX shortly before that. Always fun.

The Disco Biscuits might be the best band in 1996
They have been dropping new songs all week.  3.0 seems to be starting off with a new Rock Opera!  City Bisco incoming.

N1 @Alpine was insane. Pig opener, Grey w/3rd verse, Fool in the Rain cover (first in DMB history), Say Bye. Really disappointed that we didn't do N2 or any other shows this year. Will be doing multiple next year for sure.

Used to be a huge fan. Saw them many times during the 90s... including shooting this live video of Dave solo at a Record Store here in Memphis back in 1994.

Worked with the infamous Chester Copperpot (Jason Stessel) a few years back to have the master tape cleaned up since the bootleg had somehow made it's way out in 2007. The only copies I knew of in existence were my Hi8 master, and two VHS copies I made from the master (one in my possession, and one I handed to Dave later that night at their show at The New Daisy Theater).

Really cool comparison here showing my original video, and the enhancements Chester Copperpot made the the video: https://capture.dropbox.com/k7WOQbT9JtgNZzY5. Dude is talented.

Had a chance to hang out with Dave several times over the years. Was always a good dude... then he started looking rougher and being a lot less chill as we entered the 2000s. I started losing interest in the music they were releasing and the shows went downhill so I moved on.  Last time I saw him was about a decade ago in Nashville, IIRC. solid but kinda meh.

I'd say in the last 8-10 years it's more like early DMB than 2000s DMB, but I get what you're saying. On of our first interactions here was about DMB back on the old board, not quite old yellow, but right after. It didn't go so well for me :lmao:

Will be seeing DMB this weekend at Fiddler's Green. It'll be my first 2-night run so kind of excited to see where the setlists take us. Also my first time at Fiddler's - I hear the slope in GA is a killer. Thankfully I'll be in lower reserved both nights. Any tips for Fiddler's or surrounding area?

No experience with Fiddler's but enjoy, 2 night runs are awesome! And seems like a new album is coming soon since a late fall/early winter tour was announced.

I'm in the Twin Cities and happy there's a stop here in November. Had we known that early in the year we might not have planned a weekend in Denver. This way I'll have my cake and eat it too. Yes, I think there will be a new album release soon. Will be interesting to see what the setlists look like in support of a new album.

Probably similar to what we are seeing now, the thought is that a bunch of the new songs this tour will be on the album. Madman's Eyes, Walk Around the Moon, Break Free, Break For It, maybe Shotgun

Going to see Dave & Tim in a few weeks at a festival in CT. My wife is a huge fan and we’ve been to 20 or 30 shows over the years, including the Piedmont Park and Radio City shows, the 25th anniversary show in Charlottesville, and two runs in Mexico. I can’t say I’m a huge fan anymore, but his shows are always a blast. Our first concert post-Covid was DMB in Alpharetta with a group of friends on the lawn. A night I’ll never forget, just total emotional release after what felt like a decade of no live music.

Helluva a N1 setlist, N2 should be crazy! Seems like cell signals suck there, lots of streamers had major issues.

Oh man - what a 2 nights at Fiddler's. While I liked the N1 setlist, N2 was wild. Sat about 8 rows behind the pit center stage on N1 and being that close was amazing. The band is ridiculous right now - just on fire. Was way off to the side in the 100s for N2 but the energy all night was nuts. The Granny opener into Pig was killer and I knew they were going to try to slay Rapunzel after the mess during that one at the Gorge, but didn't see it coming as the closer.
I enjoyed Fiddler's way more than I thought I would. The slope is uncomfortable to stand on but the sound was good and I like that it felt cozy despite being a big venue. Terrible to get in and out of but I'd go back to a show there in a heartbeat. We pre-gamed each day at a place called The Grange Food Hall. Good vibe and very good food options.
