Actually, a Congressional investigation is already underway... http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2014/09/10/roger-goodell-congress-letter-john-conyers-ray-rice/15394317/

And that's before the AP report...
That's not a Congressional investigation. The NFL has yet to even be accused of something illegal.
Oh it's the start of a Congressional investigation, no doubt about that. Congress can and does investigate anything they want, and there doesn't have to be an allegation of criminal activity for them to do it.
No doubt? There is nothing in that letter about a Congressional investigation.
Please stop. You know nothing about this issue and you are embarrassing yourself. Congress has investigated the NFL several times in the last 10 years. An investigation is coming... http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2014/09/senate-committee-chair-rockefeller-looking-to-investigate-nfl.html

Right. So a letter from a group of House reps is evidence that the Senate is going to start an official investigation.

U.S. senators from both parties echoed the committee's points.

"I fear the failure of the NFL to understand the scope and severity of this act of domestic violence has already led to significant damage for vulnerable members of society,'' Republican Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada said, adding that he was "highly disappointed'' that Goodell and the NFL did not take severe action against Rice until after a security video of Rice punching his then-fiancee on a casino elevator was made public. "By waiting to act until it was made public you effectively condoned the action of the perpetrator himself,'' Heller wrote in her letter to Goodell. "I cannot and will not tolerate that position by anybody, let alone the National Football League.''

Sen. Richard Blumenthal released a statement after Wednesday's news broke. "Recent reports that the NFL had the Ray Rice battering video point to Roger Goodell's burgeoning, insurmountable credibility gap," Blumenthal, D-Conn., said in the news release. "If these reports are true, Commissioner Goodell must go, for the good of the NFL and its fans. The current leadership of the NFL cannot be trusted to fairly, genuinely implement policies that address domestic violence.

1. Because you continue to ridicule all my postings, implying that you know better on the subject.2. You are not betting me. You are putting your money where your mouth is - for charity. Let's make the donation to the battered women's cause.

The better question, is, why wouldn't you take the bet when you are so convinced that I'm full of it?

Answer - cuz you're a troll and a fraud.

LOL at a congressman talking about ANYONE having a "credibility gap". Not saying there is not an issue but if I had a dollar for every congressman without a "credibility gap" I would not be able to afford a $.50 cup of coffee.

Care to elaborate on why you are so sure of this? Congress has been all over the NFL the last 10 years. They investigated the NFL pension and disability plans in 2007. They investigated steroid use and they investigated HGH testing (or lack thereof). In 2009 the House Judiciary Committee held hearings on the concussion issue, where Mr. Goodell didn't make any friends I can tell you that. In 2012 Senator Durbin ordered an investigation into Bountygate but canceled it a month later after being satisifed with Goodell's actions. Heck, Senator Arlen Specter (he of Warren Commission fame who coined the term "magic bullet") even tried to open an investigation into Spygate. It's only been a few hours since the AP story broke and we've already seen a member of the House and a member of the Senate launch their own inquiries into the issue.I have some contacts on the Hill and there is most definitely a buzz about Congress getting involved here. It's an election year and the topic of domestic violence resonates with a lot of target voters. Conventional wisdom is that an investigation or formal inquiry probably won't come to pass as Goodell will most likely have to resign in the next few days.

Not sure the independent investigation by former FBI Director Mueller is going to satisfy the public's thirst for the truth right now. Mueller's firm has significant ties to the NFL. Former partners have been the general counsels of the Redskins, the Cowboys, and the Jaguars. The current President of the Ravens is also a former partner. And with John Mara of the Giants and Art Rooney of the Steelers overseeing the investigation, I think it's a real stretch to call this "independent".

If a franchise did what the NFL has done, Goodell would fine the owner $1M and ban the team from the playoffs. At least.

Yet I'm sure he thinks he has no blame.

RiceGate was an inside job!!!!!

Haha, Goodell must have gone to sleep tonight thinking, "wtf, Congress?! smh..."

Also, true story that a year from now Goodell may be run out of the NFL, and Rice could be suiting up on Sunday for the NFL...

“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam,” Mr. Blumenthal said to the group gathered in Norwalk in March 2008. “And you exemplify it. Whatever we think about the war, whatever we call it — Afghanistan or Iraq — we owe our military men and women unconditional support.”

There was one problem: Mr. Blumenthal, a Democrat now running for the United States Senate, never served in Vietnam. He obtained at least five military deferments from 1965 to 1970 and took repeated steps that enabled him to avoid going to war, according to records.

Why doesn't Congress investigate the DA that is in their backyard while they are digging into this?

If a franchise did what the NFL has done, Goodell would fine the owner $1M and ban the team from the playoffs. At least.

Yet I'm sure he thinks he has no blame.
If a team flat out lied about getting evidence they would lose their 1st round pick, be fine 1 mil and the owner would be in a hot seat.

The only thing the public wants is him gone and at this point half probably can't remember why

Why doesn't Congress investigate the DA that is in their backyard while they are digging into this?
there's no evidence the DA lied, i am pretty sue the DA had this tape and never said otherwise and stands by their decision

now the voters should send the DA a message, or in the event thee DA is appointed then send whomever appointed them a message

plus

the DA of podunk new jersey has a lot more impact than the comish of the nfl

The NFL, Rooger Goodell and anyone of any importance as far as NFLPA players relations and execs all saw the tape or were given the tape by the police or casino either or, probably the cops at that time bc of the investigation ongoing. I believe the NFL is lying and Roger should be fired asap. They dropped the ball as a whole, they are a dirty scumbag league that tries to manipulate, lie and cheat their way out of problems.... Look at the Bounty gate with Gregg Williams.. How come the NFL didn't go talk to any of the other teams that Greg was a defensive coordinator or involved with the defense??????WHY. Here is the list....

1984–1987 Belton HS (GA)
1988–1989 University of Houston (Def. asst.ST/LB)

1997–2000Tennessee Oilers/Titans (DC)
2001–2003 Buffalo Bills (HC)
2004–2007 Washington Redskins (DC/Asst.HC)

2008 Jacksonville Jaguars (DC)
2009–2011 New Orleans Saints

Do you think that was a new thing he started in 09-11 while he was just with the saints.... He never had the Idea brought up to do this while in Houston/Tennessee/Buffalo/Washington or Jacksonville??????????? The Nfl is a corrupt organization big time, but we still watch... Us sheeples... I mean Im not gonna lie they put a decent product out their for professinal Football. Offfield not so much. They need to get it together.

There was a blurb on the espn crawl about the county prosecutor saying that even if Rice went to trial, he would have been charged with 3rd degree assault, found guilty because of the tape but probable sentence was only probation since he was a first time offender.

I hate to harp on the politics of the sport we all love and enjoy but it reallys plays a big part and sucks....

Gosh, what a surprise.

The independent investigation to be conducted by former FBI director Robert Mueller won’t be completely independent. It will be overseen by a pair of owners — John Mara of the Giants (pictured) and Art Rooney II of the Steelers.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/09/11/mara-rooney-to-oversee-independent-investigation/

Will Mueller have the ability to gather any evidence, ask any question, explore any angle that he wants? Will he be permitted to consult with, for example, former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue regarding the dynamics of the league office and the identity of the persons most likely to know whether the video of the Ray Rice assault had indeed made its way to 345 Park Avenue?
Ultimately, what will Mara and Rooney do with the results of the investigation? Will they be released to the public entirely? Will they be partially concealed? Will they be skewed in a way that justifies keeping Goodell in place and results in other key members of the administration quietly taking jobs as Pac-12 athletic directors?
The last "independent investigation" done by the NFL was done by Mary Jo White (Bountygate) and it was a sham.

Why doesn't Congress investigate the DA that is in their backyard while they are digging into this?
Hearing this in a few places ... but I wouldn't assume that the Atlantic City DA is going to get a pass in the end.

However, you might be thinking that Goodell and the DA should be in trouble for essentially the same thing. That's not so. Goodell is under fire for upholding inconsistent ad hoc policies and lying to the public to cover that up. Really, Goodell's current issues are not really tied to domestic violence, Ray Rice, or any of that any more. Like someone posted elsewhere, the league is facing a crisis of confidence.

The Atlantic City DA, on the other hand, is facing inquiries into how his office allowed Ray Rice into the diversionary program for non-violent offenders. Since Rice was facing a battery charge, diversion was supposed to be off the table for him. Somebody pulled a string or dropped the ball, and the DA will have to answer for it.

All in all, though, Goodell is the higher blade of grass, and is in a much better position to get chopped early than the DA. But don't get to thinking it's an either-or proposition, or that if "they do't go after A, they can't go after B" -- that's always a fallacy.

Looked at page 1 of this thread and page 7. So this might have been addressed but I haven't seen it except one guy said,"Rice is in old boys club." which doesn't seem right to me.

I don't get what the NFL and Goddell had to gain by a cover up. What would the motivation be? Goddell might be dumb, but I don't get what he had to gain by covering it up. NFL players do bad stuff often, why take the chance of a cover up?

First-time-offender status and a guilty verdict may have gotten him probation, but the DA office's breach was procedural -- Rice should never have been in the diversion program.

The Commish said:
I don't think they saw the video. I think they turned down the opportunity to see it. I think Rice told them exactly what happened and there was nothing they saw in the video that Rice didn't tell them. Given these three things, we're splitting hairs and asking the wrong question(s). Questions should be about why the change in punishment and why don't the punishments match the new "rules" Goodell put out (first time offender gets a 6 game suspension, not an indefinite one).
I'd surmise that the couple severely downplayed the incident something like, "We were both drunk and got in a fight, she hit me and in defending myself I hit her back, she hit her head and blacked out. It was awful and we feel horrible about it."

The NFL buys it and issues the 2 game suspension.

When the video is released the NFL sees it and says 'Oh, hell no!" The added punishment may be for falsifying their statements.

Have we seen what their statement were, verbatim, btw? I keep seeing people saying Ray said this and Ray said that but I'm not sure I've seen the transcript. Is it available online?
The video shown illustrates this "story" though. I hear people talking about it being "different" that it was a closed fist vs an open hand. In a case like this, I fail to see a huge difference. He either hit her with an open hand or closed. Bottom line is, he hit her.

That's not what the prosecutor said. Since it was third degree not second degree with serious bodily injury, PTI was in play. really sounds liek screwed up laws especially when compared to Shaneen Allen.

*Not a lawyer, did not stay at Holiday Inn Express, just going by what I read

When Ray Rice beat his wife unconscious in an elevator, New Jersey Superior Court Judge Michael Donio and New Jersey District Attorney Jim McClain agreed to put him in a diversion program for 1st-time offenders to keep him out of jail. But when Pennsylvania single mom Shaneen Allen was pulled over for a traffic violation and volunteered to a New Jersey police officer that she was carrying a legally-owned handgun with a Pennsylvania permit, the response of Donis and McClain was to deny her the same opportunity as Rice.

Allen lives in Philadelphia, right across the river from New Jersey. She has a Pennsylvania permit to carry a handgun. She thought it was recognized in New Jersey, just as it is recognized in over 30 other states. She was wrong. When she told the officer that she had the gun, she was arrested.

Now she faces a felony conviction and a mandatory 42 months in prison.

Goodell's not in trouble for covering up Ray Rice's behavior. He's in trouble for covering up a cynically botched internal investigation. Goodell has not been covering up for Ray Rice for Rice's sake ... but for Goodell's sake.

If the full-length tape gone public back in February, and the public outcry had built up back then, Goodell would've been happy to give Rice the season off.

I don't get what the NFL and Goddell had to gain by a cover up. What would the motivation be? Goddell might be dumb, but I don't get what he had to gain by covering it up. NFL players do bad stuff often, why take the chance of a cover up?

I don't think Goodell was thinking he was gaining anything. I think it was just total arrogance that whatever the 800 lb gorilla of the NFL says, goes and people will just follow along.

He totally misread the severity of the incident and the public outcry.

If he suspends Rice six games (maybe even four), none of this happens.

Since it was third degree not second degree with serious bodily injury, PTI was in play. really sounds liek screwed up laws especially when compared to Shaneen Allen.

Thanks for the link -- that's a refinement of what was in the echo chamber yesterday.

I will say --though only my opinion -- that the prosecutor undercharged Rice. But Zow posted in the FFA thread that because of vagaries of the legal process and victim cooperation, spouse-beating can essentially be de facto legal in some circumstances and prosecutors don't have a lot of power to change that.

U.S. senators from both parties echoed the committee's points.

You ridibuled me yesterday, because you said there was no coverup. Care to think differently? The lawyers had access to the tape. Did Goodell see it? We don't know, but indications is that he day. Funny how your face has changed since facts are coming out.

Happiest owner right now? Dan Snyder.

Ain't nobody talking about a name change.
I would not be so quick on this thought....The last 15 years or so have shown when "outside" special interest groups are able to get private business and governments to make a change through PR, boycotts, etc they don't stop. Once outside groups are given the "empowerment" of making changes they want, they don't stop. They just wait until they can come up with a new issue.

The hatred for Goodell and most leadership decision makers in this country is making many very happy about the whole fiasco and the way it is going - especially on this board. Just remember, the more you let Congress and other "outside" groups make decisions for you/force you to make decisions - they feel more empowered and will go after their next issue. I would bet the anti-Redskins name groups are excited about the apparent "damaged and weakened NFL" right now and are already planning some new big protests. The NFL will need to cave quickly to reduce the PR hit at this time when they are already appearing to be out of touch.

If I was Snyder, I would expect more pressure from the NFL office and other owners to change the name to get the topic off the negative PR for the league.

BTW, there are a whole lot of issues that these groups are going to start attacking the NFL about. If you think Goodell was sissyifying the NFL, just wait if the NFL comes out very damaged from all of this. Everyone needs to watch out what you wish for, getting there may change the league forever.

This is what I was referring to earlier. The hatred for Goodell is what is driving this and just remember if he goes down, the league will never be the same. Every group you can think of will push their "issue" and many of them will be adopted. There is a whole section of the medical community that believe there should not be any football at any level due to the head injuries - whether we understand the whole process of brain trauma makes no difference. Let them get going with Congress again and watch what changes get made to the game.

And lastly, part of the hatred for Goodell is people only remembering what they want to remember. Yes Robinson probably did these things before, but 2 years to the penalties every team was notified multiple times these things were not being allowed anymore. Then they lied about it. But don't let facts get in the way of your hatred.

Yeah, thanks for insight, really bugs me how people in power have no touch of reality and no idea how the public reacts. I have a hard time believing he is dumb enough to have seen the inside elevator video and only levy a 2 game suspension.

There was a blurb on the espn crawl about the county prosecutor saying that even if Rice went to trial, he would have been charged with 3rd degree assault, found guilty because of the tape but probable sentence was only probation since he was a first time offender.
Yeah I don't get the DA hate. There's nothing unusual about Rice getting a deal as a first time offender.

FWIW Ross Tucker had Andrew Brandt on his podcast yesterday and both seem to believe Goodell didnt see the tape. It's a good overall listen
