My wife actually made me buy some new clothes at Christmas. She said a lot of my shirts looked too big and baggy. My jeans were starting to look old. At 67, am I supposed to care about fashion ? Last year she made me give away several aloha shirts. When we go out I usually wear slacks or nice jeans and a buttoned down shirt. Around the house in the winter I were old jeans and either Dallas Cowboys or old Jeff Gordon sweatshirts. In the summer it is cargo shorts and similar tee shirts. For pickleball I wear sweatpants and a hoodie right now.

nice Robert Graham shirt, Cole Haan leather sneakers
Never heard of these things
Yeah was gonna say outside of @offdee nobody knows what that is
Seriously?
I'll add that I am serious in saying those things mean nothing to me.
Me too. Every time someone has used some brand in their descriptions I have no idea what they are talking about.
Dude. Even your Hanes whities are a brand.

maybe not "fashion" which i think some people confuse with wearing the goofy **** you see, say, NBA players wearing like they're walking the runway

but "fashion" in that you shouldn't just give up and wear sweatpants with holes out to dinner with your family, etc. your wife still wants to feel good when she looks at you and that consists of at least looking put together and not like you grabbed whatever was on the floor and not visibly stained.

well fitting, clean, clothes. a decent haircut. comb whatever hair you have if you aren't wearing a hat. be presentable i think is "fashionable" to 98% of us.

Yeah, no one's saying dress like Cam Newton

(unless that's genuinely your thing)

Around the house in the winter I were old jeans
This makes no sense. Jeans are not comfortable. There are much more comfortable clothes for lounging around the house. I wear jeans as little as possible and only when I have to wear pants. It would drive me nuts if I wore jeans for just hanging around my house. But, to each their own.

I'm sure not going to wear dress pants to do chores around the house or out in the yard. I only own one pair of sweat pants and I wear them to do yoga or play pickleball. Besides, winter here is only about two months anyway.

I wear shorts for chores and lounging around. Doesn't get too cold here but if it did I wouldn't be wearing jeans. They are just uncomfortable to me.

Agree with the wives insisting on their men ditching their over sized Hawaiian shirts. Not flattering and screams “I only shop for clothes at Costco too”. OK in certain settings (if your block party has a luau theme) but not good if that’s your go to

and basketball shorts they picked up during the Wolverines Fab 5 era

Considering the jeans I'm seeing all the high schoolers wearing (they're huge and loose, and I knew that was going to come back around eventually), Wooferine shorts can't be too far behind. '90s retro, baby.

I think this conversation kind of ties into the dating your spouse thread. When WFH started it became a running joke amongst our friend group how the women all dressed down now that they were home (most of the guys didn’t WFH) and work baggy sweats, etc. My wife said to me, “if I ever do that, divorce me … I don’t want to ever give up”. We have both followed this rule. We aren’t getting all dressed up in office attire every day but we are still trying to not look like we just rolled out of bed every day.

As my old man used to say, “look good, feel good”!

I've been noticing a lot you complain about comfort as to why you don't dress up, etc. I was in a bind and needed a pair of slacks while I was on the road. These pants were a revelation, fit great and so damn comfortable. Almost feels like I'm wearing joggers. Love all the improvements designers have made over the years to add comfort while not sacrificing :style: https://www.vineyardvines.com/product/mens-pants/on-the-go-pant/1P000005.html?color=8872

I doubt it for gym :style: Just not very practical for how they constrict movement imo.

You mean by hitting at the knees, right? That always was a drawback to those "athletic" shorts.

Anyway, Vineyard Vines, huh? Did you go to Choate Rosemary Hall or something? Nice pants. I have a pair of nice Ben Sherman pants that look remarkably like those. I paired them (they're a sandstone khaki) with a dark brown and gold Run the Jewels III shirt last week.

Smashing!

Haha, I don't know much about the brand other than it's some Nantucket prep type company with a cool whale logo who had a store next to my hotel. Point being getting slacks with a 55% cotton 32% nylon 13% spandex blend is kind awesome and hella comfortable.

Vineyard Vines is like a preppy-type clothing brand specializing in Vampire Weekend-esque uber-prepster boat docking looks. Like they try to be an older money (yet sportier!) version of J. Crew. It's very upper-middle class in its affectation and aim. I went to school with people who would have worn Vineyard Vines on the reg (except the store started its affectations in 1998, a year after I graduated) while they majored in finance and pretended they were from old money (they weren't).

That's about Vineyard in a nutshell.

Anything vest besides suited or puffer is dead to the upper middle class.

But yes, the Houston GM? Never seen him.

You nailed it as always. That's that Patagonia-style vest all the upper middle class kids wore. I forgot that one.

Fleece vest?

Impressed!

I hate spending money on clothes unless its hunting/fishing/backpacking type clothing......so thats what I wear. Simms, Sitka, etc .. I have some ex officio collared shirts. Yep, I'm pretty fancy.

Around here, suddenly it's cool to wear camo......I didn't even know I was cool until my daughter started borrowing my clothes. Haha.

Bill Nighy on style.

respect to him but he avoids mentioning the cost of dressing in trousers, crisp button downs and suits daily.

love the look. not really applicable to my every day life.

Sure, some of the brands he mentioned like John Smedly are expensive. But similar looks can be found on more normal budgets.

Sites like PrimerMagazine often do different versions of a similar look. https://www.primermagazine.com/2024/spend/evening-rooftop-outfit-1-look-3-budgets

I haven't worn a pair of jeans in probably 12 years.

I haven’t owned a pair of blue jeans in 40 years. I did relent and started wearing black jeans around 2016.

Stopped wearing khakis in the late 1990s. Gave up on fleece when all the crypto & tech bros made in de rigueur. Just don’t like wearing what everyone else is adopting.

Around my city there are definitely events it’s more or less expected smart casual means all black. But I’ve been getting away from blacks and grays, adding a lot more color. It’s fun.

Was never a jeans & tee shirt kid growing up. Just thought cords were more comfortable in the 70s & 80s.

Have been wearing 3-button Henleys for 35 or so years. Prefer layers in the fall or winter. Might be tees and long sleeve crew neck under a chambray or a flannel. Or white tee, dress shirt & cardigan. Occasionally a crew neck sweater.

Not too many suits, I only need a couple options for funerals or weddings. More sport coats than I need but they’re classic styles that are more or less timeless.

Have around 10ish pairs of footwear. Might be colorful Doc Martens or pull on Chelseas or loafers or boat shoes or sneakers or wing tips or Birkenstocks.

When I had a lot of discretionary income (most of my life) I didn’t mind spending more to acquire good quality. Well made should equate to longer utility, but as with anything, not everything that is expensive equates to high quality.

These days I’m a pauper on a fixed income, and by necessity have to be more frugal. Just means I have to buy off-season (on sale) or be selective about discounted sample sales - or scrounge consignment items at thrift stores.

I don’t know if I dress my age or not, I don’t consider myself fashionable. I am aware and have self-awareness - I dress at the level appropriate for what I am doing or where I’m going. Have never gone for looking like a slob. I definitely have relaxed clothing I don’t wear outside of home but if something is threadbare it goes in the bin.

All things in moderation.

I have a few Vineyard Vines items that's probably considered golf apparel. I think I have some swim trunks made by them too, though I don't wear them much.

Does this make me cool or no? I can't tell from this exchange.

It's actually a fabulous disaster, but it's about as good as I get. And a fresh haircut (I mean just gotten, not the slang word) with some Aveda pomade in it. I'm ready to go to the gastroenterologist!

It's an in-style brand to the best of my knowledge, but it might look like you're chasing after old money or long to be old monied (like you grew up in Nantucket and docked at the shore while living in your tudor-style huge house).

You guys are hella lame

Damn it!

First time I ever hear that world was tumbling out of James Hetfield's mouth in an interview back in 1986 or '87 or so. Or as the girl would say in that Deftones song

It's hella sensitive

My old jeans that I wear to work in the yard are now starting to get holes in them. Isn't that the current style ? Maybe I could sell them.
When I was a kid, one of my parents friends gave me all of his ancient 501s. Original purchase date would have been in the 50s. They were awesome.

Hope you saved them. Those vintage 501s are worth a pretty penny.
