Bump to poll the fellas here if there's a suggestion for a brand I should be looking at for a casual, lace-up sneaker that I can wear with jeans/polo in a casual work environment.

I had a pair of gray sneakers that are looking dingy and the soles are wearing out, so it's time to replace 'em.

Not looking to break the bank (I'm cheap), so say in the $100-and-under range, and preferably online with ability to pay via PayPal (gotta spend all my fantasy football winnings somehow).

TIA

I’m a fan of these but not everyone is.

Mmm yeah those are too "athletic" looking. I guess the kind I'm looking for would be a "dress sneaker"?

I think the ones I had that are no longer wearable are Cole Haan, but I looked at their website and they're too pricey. I probably got mine off Amazon or something.

Getting closer!

Ended up going with these sneaks from Sperry .... $70 including tax and shipping. Not bad!

I hope you voted yes to the dressing your age poll
Oh for sure. These are for work, really... 2x week at most. I have "sexier" sneaks for when I'm around people I actually give a crap about

 Those are basic canvas sneakers. Happen to be sperry but could be Vans as easily. Sure Sperry is older preppier but look is pretty age agnostic. Is that what you meant @Eephus ?

Or what would you suggest for a more reasonable choice?

Depends on your style but for something simple and classic, hard to go wrong with a basic Stan Smith. https://www.adidas.com/us/stan-smith-shoes/M20325.html

I have a pair of all-white Stan Smiths. I almost never wear them because they're just a shade too preppy and they're not very comfortable. I haven't broken them in, so that might be a stupid lament. The other thing is they get dirty so fast out here in the Dust Bowl where I live (Inland Empire, California) and it's tough to pull off a preppy look with dirty sneakers. Did I mention that one day around here I wore a pair of light blue linen shorts with a pink shirt and began to think (judging by the people and how they were dressed around me) that I was inviting trouble by being a shade too precious?

That's also a consideration for somebody like me who always thinks preppy clothes are nice clothes and the way to go. Can't get the New England out of me.

Thanks GB. What's your sneaker of choice there?

I was just kidding.

They're a shoe that has remained unchanged for decades and will probably still be worn for ages to come. Retro shoe styles have become fashionable recently. I see well fitted out young people in SF wearing old school leather New Balances. There was even a NY Times article a few months about how Mephistos are now hip.

these or Rod Laver's were going to be my suggestion for low profile, casual.

I don't have business commitments, so I don't have to worry about being appropriate. Therefore, a grain of salt is completely warranted with what I'm about to post. Aside from the Stan Smiths, my sneakers run the gamut from a pair of AllBirds to a pair of limited edition Puma/Coca Cola sneakers.

These are the AllBirds I rarely wear (link at brand)

These are the Stan Smiths

These are a pair of canvas Dr. Martens that everybody seems to love for some reason. It's the Pistols!*

Another pair - it's The Who

Another pair of a different type of Who sneaker

And my last pair are the Puma/Coca-Cola sneakers

The rest of my wardrobe are shoes and various sandals (Birkenstock)

That doesn't solve nirad3's issue about what shoes will pass for preppy enough and still be wearable at work, but it's what I've got. I also own a pair of Sperrys that ran a little big and I was never able to get the fit right. They are an older person's shoe, I think, as Eephus might be alluding to. I know I didn't really care. I wore New Balance way, way back when they were grandpa shoes. I loved my grey and white New Balance, they just weren't appropriate for working out (they caused me a hip issue, which I kind of know because as soon as I switched shoes to Asics, the hip pain went away).

*These are the sneaker of choice. They're a) black and white, which seems to be a very popular color combo around here and b) they're not precious at all save for the pink sole which gives them a bit of flair, but nothing like wearing blue linen shorts and a pink chambray shirt or any pink shirt for that matter.

Heh. Hope you enjoyed a trip into my wardrobe.

a "zesty collaboration" NTTAWWT

I'm kind of a snob for vivobarefeet shoes. Shopping for a third pair now. They're a little pricy, but I love the fit. The barefoot model is not for everyone.

Otherwise, DSW is my go to, online and brick and mortar. Pro tip: start browsing from the discount rack in the back
