Do you rest players? (1 Viewer)

I locked up the division, so I'm wondering if I should rest players?
Would be a fun one for the "Weird League Rules" thread. If a player gets injured during a game in which you aren't starting him, you can start him the following three weeks even if he's out, and get points based on ... *mumbles* uhh, flathem ...

i actually started this thread because the few days before Thanksgiving are very slow at work and I'm bored, but that's a fun, unique idea!

Are you guys hiring?

i have a couple of guys with incentive clauses and i’m sitting them out to not earn the incentives.
We actually do have salary escalations based on points scored.......however they count all the points scored not just the ones in the starting lineup so this wouldn't work. Nice idea though.

It’s more that you need to get your bench guys some reps. You never know what might happen in the playoffs. Godspeed
We actually had a big issue a few years back when a team that already had things wrapped up played a LB that he hadn't played all year over one of his studs and it ended up costing another team some money because of the outcome of the final game of the season (no playoffs). When asked why he played that guy his reason was that he wasn't sure if wanted to keep him next year so he wanted to watch him play...........like he had to be in the lineup to watch him? That didn't go over well.

No but when I make the league finals, I will often cut some of my bench players on that final Sat/Sun and add some of Lions players who are never rostered or Dontrelle Inman. No idea but for awhile, he was my lucky charm. If I had him on my roster, I always won. I think he made a big play for me as a waiver guy at some point and then I just always made a point to add at the end.

This reminds me that I always drafted a defensive player with my last pick in my long time league. It was not an IDP league and in fact we don't have team defense either. We go deep in the draft (originally was 25 rounds) and by the end there was nobody worth thinking about so we decided to take a defensive guy. I think it might have been Reggie White. We got a lot of crap for the pick and our response was we did it because defense wins championships. We ended up winning our first title that year.

So for many, many years we would always do that. When they went to Thursday games (we still draft on the Saturday night before the first Sunday games) we ended up drafting a defensive player that scored a TD and put them into our week 1 lineup. Everyone tried to fight us on it but we had precedent of taking defensive players so the Commish allowed it. It was awesome.

Anyway, all that to say, sometimes you just need to get your good luck charm onto your roster.

I know you're joking, but I locked up the #1 seed early in my first national league. This week, I was scheming to get a certain team into the #4 seed to face me in round 1 (in week 14), which potentially meant benching CMC, Davante, Rashee, Pickens, and/or Egbuka, after I saw how the earlier games went. I normally wouldn't care that much, but I have CMC and Maye on a bye round 1 of the playoffs, who I knowingly drafted because I cared more about the big national league playoffs week 15 - week 17. Because of how the 1:00 PM Sunday games went, tanking this week wouldn't give me much of an edge, so I kept my best players in my lineup. If the 1:00 PM games had shaped up differently, I'm not sure if I would have gone ahead with benching my studs, because losing on purpose for your own seeding/matchup benefit can obviously piss off the team(s) that it negatively effects. However, I don't believe it's technically against the rules unless it's interpreted as collusion.

No you don’t compromise the integrity of your league.

What if they can leverage their dominant record to propel an inferior team into the playoffs? Possibly even an opening round opponent?

Our dynasty league lives by the mantra that you always do what's best for your team.

I might be in a situation in week 14 where I have to "rest" some studs to ensure the only team I'm battling with in the points wildcard gets a win and a normal playoff spot, leaving the final points wildcard to me. If that's what it takes to get my team into the playoffs, so be it. I do fear karma, but there's a point where you have to do what's practical. Not an ideal situation.

When I win a championship I always take care of my players by cutting them shares of of my prize money. Last year I hope Derrick Henry didn't spend his $4.38 all in one place.

Did he cash the check?

I have to admit to making ceremonial bench signings back when I actually made it to championships. All injured studs and Jake Butt, c'mon down and get your fantasy championship ring.

Also, make sure you've got a driver lined up for Rashee Rice and Jordan Addison if you're giving them the week off.

Definitely.

I send my guys to Cancun.

Worked wonders for Tony Romo, Jason Witten, Victor Cruz, OBJ . . . the list goes on and on.

Just add up all the rings that THOSE guys have and . . .

Um . . .

Nevermind.

I understand the rationale behind doing this but I think it is bad form and wouldn't do it. I don't think it is a fair way to play even if there aren't technically rules against it. It's bad karma and I just wouldn't do it.

I understand the situation but I wouldn't do it. I just don't think it is fair and level playing that way and karma is a b****.

Fair. You have to know where your line is. Personally, if I'm in the OP's situation and safely in a playoff spot I'm not getting cute trying to impact a playoff matchup or who's in and out. With my luck, the inferior opponent I target would just drop a bomb on me. Definitely karma.

There's some context for my situation, and yeah, this is all rationalization, but here it goes anyway:

  • I'm 3rd out of 12 teams in points, on my way to a 5-7 record
  • The team I'm battling is 27 points back. All other teams still competing for a playoff spot are back more than 140 points.
  • The league accepts open tanking for draft picks. The 1-10 team doesn't seem too concerned about karma. Their one win? Against me in week 1, by 0.1 points (a yard). They've been tanking hard since week 5, giving two free wins to everyone in their division, which includes the teams that are a threat to knock off the guy I'm even with.
  • Arbitrary 3-division format with unbalanced schedules. My division is a combined 12 games over .500.

Hopefully, I can maintain a slim lead in points going into week 14 and then it's moot. I either eliminate him with a win or he beats me fair and square, leaving the points wildcard to me.

On the other hand, If the magic number where I can eliminate myself with a win is 0 to 0.6 points, I probably do my best and take my chances against such a small window. If that window is 0-20 points, I'm not eliminating myself with a victory. The aggrieved teams 100 points back can take it up with the commish for devising a playoff format where different teams are playing for different outcomes to qualify for the playoffs.

I used to do that, but I would add Tim Tebow. Having Jesus on your side couldn't hurt.

Yes, obviously, but not too much, because then they'll be rusty heading into the playoffs.

(Also, it's a nice reward for your hard-working bench guys. Think of how excited a kid like Cooper Kupp will be to get some real game action.)

A few months ago, I came home to find my 10 year old playing Madden. He had the Bills, and was winning something like 35-7.

"____, why is Trubisky in at QB?"

"Oh, I'm resting my starters."

(And in case you're wondering, no, he was not playing franchise mode)
