Lions Will use RB Johnson More In Coming Weeks

Nicholas Cotsonika, Detroit Free Press - [Full Article]

According to Detroit Lions OC Jim Colletto the team is looking for more from RB Rudi Johnson, "We're going to play him more," Colletto said. "I think his hamstring now is better. He's going to play more."

Johnson has also been getting to know most of the playbook. "He's up to speed," Colletto said. "He can do everything now

I've been wondering about him a lot lately since I own him in a PPR dynasty and have considered dropping him outright.

Downside

1. His skills have likely diminished

2. Detroit has looked at backups AFTER they signed him, which makes me wonder if they know something

3. The Lions are terrible

4. He's not getting any younger

5. He doesn't catch many passes

6. He may not get many goalline opportunities

7. Was released by the freaking Bengals, (that's pathetic with wha they have at RB)

Upside

1. He is still currently the #2

2. He was injured last year, and may just now be getting healthy

3. Kevin Smith is still largely unproven

4. Kevin Smith may be an injury risk

5. The Lions wanted him and signed him quickly after he was released.

If he does anything in the next 3 weeks (watch his YPC), I think u hang on to him. You forgot to mention the Rookie wall, and Rudi basically auditioning for his next job; Johnson could be depth for your playoffs.

I might not be considering all the angles as you have stated above merely because I don't want to overanalyze the situation. I'm focusing on the fact that although Kevin Smith hasn't played lights out in the first two weeks, Rudi would have to play like an absolute stud for him to get enough carries to say he's worthy of starting (in my opinion). Being new to the offense/team and coming off a significant injury that kept him at less than pedestrian numbers last year and obviously not completely healed...I'm betting on him not playing lights out RB material, affording Smith at least a good bulk of the carries.

So I see a RBBC at best for Rudi...which doesn't bode well for him. I don't feel like looking it up but I don't believe the Lions scored many rushing td's last year??? So couple that with a RBBC and Rudi isn't worth much.

I'm actually dropping him tonight to pick up either Sproles or LeRon McClain...whoever falls to me a #2.

Actions speak louder than words. That will never change. Gotta read between the lines.

1. The Bengals cut him "outright." You'd have to think that they hung him out there for trade before doing so and came up empty.

2. The Lions signed him, only to bring in Shaun Alexander and Cedric Benson for tryouts two weeks later.

Nothing here should instill confidence.

It's the Lions. Gotta get past the name Rudi Johnson and seriously consider he's a backup to a Detroit rookie running back.

A backup...to a rookie...in Detroit.

This would absolutely make perfect sense since I just dropped him after burning a roster spot on him for the past two weeks. :goodposting:

Sproles? Absolutely.Seeing as how I've never heard of LeRon McClain, maybe not so much.

I was stuck starting Kevin Smith the first 2 games while waiting for McFadden to get his shot, so I watched both Lions games.

Rudi did not look good in his few carries. He's very slow to the hole, and not any better when he gets there. Detroit has defenders in the backfield before the handoff on many downs, they need a shifty RB like Smith to even have a chance for positive yards on those plays. Plus, the Lions have been down a few scores early in both of their games, & likely will continue to be. K Smith is the obvious choice in long yardage & passing situations.

Rudi may get 5-7 carries, but unless he gets GL work or Smith gets hurt, useless IMO.

His bloated salary had something to do with this, no?
