Electric Cars (Tesla and Others) (2 Viewers)

Looking at replacing my mid-size SUV/crossover and I think we're going to get a Model Y. It's not my favorite car I've ever driven but it seems to be a pretty great value with the tax credit right now.
I’ve been staring at EVs for the past 3 hours. I’d check out the lease on a Honda Prologue. 95% of the sales were leases last month and they had a nice launch over the last 3-4 months. I’ve seen one in line at school pickup and it looks fine.

I am ordering a replacement MachE hopefully later this month when the 2025 order bank opens up.

The Prologue was our other finalist. It looks great and drives wonderfully. But even the Honda sales guy had reservations about the fact that the car is actually a GM car with Honda badging. And I want to own my next car, and even with the lease incentives, the lease+purchase at the end option was ~$10k more expensive than buying the Model Y. Purchasing the car outright was not even a realistic option; all the lease payments + the buyout price was less than what they'd sell the car for upfront, which was kind of bananas.

When did he say a ct would get down to 40k?

I'm watching for some of the Benz EQs/Taycans to start rolling in off lease. The market for those used is super soft from pre owned. Off lease will be insane.
Bought my BMW i3 immediately off the initial 2 year lease for $21k (it had 22k miles on it). The window sticker from when it was new was in the glove box - $55,995

A cheaper option than the Y, and I am sure definitely not as nice, is the base model Chevy Equinox EV. With the tax credit it is like 25K. We have the Bolt, and while not the nicest EV it is definitely worth the sticker price and fits 98.7% of our needs

I'm lazy. How does the tax credit work for college kids?
It likely won’t. They need to have at least that much in tax liability to offset. It is $4K for a used EV under $25K
I would assume any parent is claiming their college age kid as a dependent, in which case the tax credit may work out.
I guess it depends on who is buying the car. If the parent is on the title, and they meet the income limits, they can claim the credit.

Waiting for the EV8 to come out from Kia. Should hit right about the time my kid turns 16 and he can have my old junker.

Tesla's FSD is silly good now. In March I got a free trial. It was good on road trips, but needed improvement in my town of 25k people. These free trials are for marketing (of course) and more importantly learning data. In town it frequently chose routes I wouldn't. It also didn't see streets very safely in old neighborhoods that need road improvement. Many of the newest and nicest homes (including mine) are on dirt roads above the town (with property and nice views). FSD was clueless there. I sure wasn't one of the many on X raving about FSD, but I used it constantly and helped guide it with the right routes. You can put pins in the route you prefer to redirect it. A little hassle but not really.

So last night I got an email for another free month. Activated it immediately. It handled the old neighborhoods as good as any human does. Chose the right route on dirt roads above town and to a few other spots. Then took me and my daughter to Vegas tonight. 3 hour drive and just perfect. We watched TNF, Tesla drove. My bro is in a gated neighborhood there. In March FSD didn't stop at the keypad, but did stop too close for the gates to open. Tonight it did it exactly right. I like to think maybe I taught a couple things, but more importantly is what a nice way to travel this is. A full sub might be my X-mas present to myself.

What does the FSD subscription cost these days? I thought it was in the $6-8K range.

Yes, or $99/month.

Fsd trial was pretty awesome when I tried it like March on hw4. Main issue I had was it always wanted to take the hov lanes where you pay a premium

Are the other self drive modes improving also? Like from the old school guys? I had a rental Subaru recently that had great highway assist, lane keep, steering, etc, but no lane change ability. Lucid's DreamDrive seems to leap forward every couple months and it basically drove me to Austin and back no issues. Cool to see how the more data they get the faster and bigger the jumps seem to be.

I had a hundai rental and was pretty impressed. It had more or less AP but did not seem traffic aware

Update: probably would not have purchased if I had done my due diligence on insurance costs (CA). We've decided it's not enough of a dealbreaker for us to cancel, but the cost of ownership will be materially higher than an ICE vehicle with that factored in.

that’s wild, my kid just bought a 2021 tesla and his insurance went up 450 total for the year compared to his 2009 honda accord. I would have thought the number would have been worse but was actually happy when I got the quote.

I went from an old Lexus to a Bolt and my insurance stayed the same even though the Bolt is worth $15,000 more. Is it a Tesla thing?
It seems to be a California and New York thing based on my research on the interwebs.
Here in MN going from a Toyota Camry to a Bolt did not change our rates at all
Yeah in TX and my rate is up but only because it's not a ten year old $30k car, it's a brand new $100k car.

Other than edge cases like the kias than can be stolen with a USB stick, insurance is pretty much just a function of the car value. If you traded in a used car for a new one and your rates didn't change that probably means you were getting ripped off on the trade in rates.

i test drove a 2020 model 3 performance today, came home feeling a little car sick. I’m guessing cause i was hammering the gas and releasing it too fast as opposed to coming off it lightly. Debating between the performance and long range, both appeal to me the long range for the bonus miles and the performance for the speed and look. The difference is the price for a 2020 3p and a 2022 3lr are about the same so do i want to give up years and miles for the added performance or get the newer car and add acceleration boost

I mean, I think 0-60 in 4 seconds flat is fast enough for most lol.

There aren't a lot of feelings quite as exhilarating as being at 50 by the end of an intersection from a stoplight.

I had never accidentally hit 90mph before getting an EV.

Get whatever range you can afford to get. You aren't going to know you are missing anything else. You'll know you're light range, even if range anxiety is overblown.

if this is your only car, strong agree. I also went RWD over AWD for the extra 20 miles of range.

On the plus side i woke up this morning and still feel sick which means the way I felt yesterday after test driving the car has nothing to do with motion sickness. Although it may have been intensified by the test drive it wasn't the root cause so I'm going to go back when I feel better and drive the car again. I also want to dive a long range model 3 and see how that feels in comparison to the performance, to me the performance model seemed heavy when driving and not very loose/free.

Have you considered the Kia's at all? When I was shopping I looked at the Model 3 but ended up liking the feel and the ecosystem of the EV6 much better.

I think this is correct take if it is your sole vehicle

I would say that if you have 2 or more vehicles, range should be a factor, but not anywhere near the top one, IMO. I say this as someone who has a 300+ mile range Bolt, so I may not be the best to comment on this. But we totally could get away with a ~200 mile VW or Leaf or something else. We plug our car in once every week on average. Whoever is going to be driving more that day (to work, kids to school, kids to climbing, errands, etc.) drives that car so it does see a lot of use but it just really isn't something we will take on long road trips. So if we could redo, range would have less of a pull as I originally thought. Although our top priority was price, and not sure we could get anything else for what we paid.

For me, it was about "what do you need range for?"

We wouldn't have got one unless I could comfortably get from Dallas to Austin and Dallas to Norman. If it wasn't gonna do that, we'd have gone with like a plug in that had 50 miles range because there's no difference between an EPA range of 300 and an EPA range of 75. Either way gonna have to stop and charge.

And anything longer than those cities, gonna have to stop in any car.

Sounds like the EV tax credits are going away soon. If you’re thinking about one and you qualify, might be time to move soon.
Is this a new administration thing? Not wanting to get into the politics, just curious. I hadn't heard about this yet.

We want another EV but ideally would wait until our never apparently dying old minivan actually dies but maybe would rethink if a 7500 dollar savings goes away

Yes

Well this sucks. I hadn't read this.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, said in July that killing the subsidy might slightly hurt Tesla sales but would be "devastating" to its U.S. EV competitors, which include legacy automakers such as General Motors

Glad I got a Bolt before they were discontinued. 20k was the steal of the auto market.
Yea, no doubt. We got the EUV which was a bit more, but it was still a crazy steal

Chevy is bringing the Bolt back with much better tech and claiming prices will still start at 28k. I've read they'll deliver model year 2025s as early as late Spring and as a late as late Fall. With much faster charging and the Ultium architecture they will be an even better deal if they come available before the new legislation kills the subsidy. I also read that ending the ev credit is part of much larger tax reform so maybe that will help keep it alive long enough.

Aside from the Model 3, ID4, and Leaf, are there any non-SUVs which are available/about to be released which qualify for the $7500 tax credit?

I've also read that it's unlikely they will kill the credit retroactively, i.e. anyone who buys an EV in 2025 could still get theirs if they buy before the new legislation passes and goes into effect. If they did kill it and make it retroactive, the car dealer lobby and car manufacturers will be very upset (as most of the credits are factored in upfront on purchases and leases) and they line the pockets of many in the House. Still unfortunate news for the fledgling EV companies out there and will obviously slow adoption if it happens.

Hertz selling Teslas 20k and Bolts 14k
There are some screaming deals on that page, but also wonder if there are and have been similar deals for whenever they sell off their ICE vehicles as well.

Nobody wants to pay anywhere near market price for a used rental car (or at least they shouldn't)

I'm looking for a screaming deal for my kid. Hertz Car Sales. Out of 107k+ cars for sale just 16 are Teslas. 16? Makes that link kinda strange, no? 15 base model 3s and 1 model y long range. None of them jump out to me as screaming. 520+ Bolts. Some good deals, but I'd rather wait for the upgrade. Brand new Bolts are going to be awesome deals once again.
