Electric Cars (Tesla and Others) (3 Viewers)

I got a CT res for giggles. I guess I could have sold it but let someone on Reddit have it for whatever I paid $42? Several months back. Can't remember. They love it.

They do look good in matte black.
Hard disagree. They look insane. I legitimately laugh when I see one. It's like a Hummer for weirdos.
Idk. When the Pontiac Aztec came out everyone laughed their *** off. Now pretty much every car on the road has that styling. I don't love it but don't hate it.
Where are you driving?
Bro come on. Every damn crossover has that same angular sweep to it and the flat front. That style was vastly ahead of the consumer preference. Now you see it in saloons.
I was gonna let is go but I don't think I've seen any cars that I would say look like that Aztek.

Hard disagree. I mean the whole "every car is an Aztec" meme got worn out because it became not a joke. It's just cars now. That Kia took on that flat front styling on sedans foretold the final frontier for that look.

I guess I'm just not enough of a car guy like I thought. Literally never heard anyone say that or seen a meme of it. Different communities I guess!

I’ve never heard of this either. Aztec is still top 5 ugliest car designs. CT makes the list as well, with the PT Cruiser, Honda Element, Nissan Juke. 2000 and newer only.

The Honda Element is awesome

Welp 2 weeks ago I got a call from my son that he had been involved in an accident on the freeway in his model 3 tesla, he was merging on the fwy to an empty lane and someone was merging over into from a lane over. His damage was to the driver side door and forward with one tire blown, this morning we found out they are going to total the car. The adjuster said it was because of the battery and the car being a 2020 with 65,000 miles on it. The first offer this morning was fine and actually would give him back what he paid but they forgot to take in to account it was a full self driving car and put down auto pilot which they all have.

The adjuster also said the parts are hard to come by and the repairs expensive so they tend to total them more than other cars, my kid loved the car for the 6 months he had it but it's looking like he will be buying a 4runner with his total loss reimbursement.

It's not unique to Teslas though that's a narrative being pushed. They total vehicles for the silliest stuff these days. Driver's side fwd with a blown tire? Gonna total almost every time.

I'm shopping for a truck. Taking my time. The last truck I owned was a Raptor. I sold it when used prices went nuts. Got more than I paid. I like having a truck, but not as a daily driver. I'm in the Mojave Desert, so offroading is part of enjoying life here. I've had a truck 85-90% of my life once licensed. First was a Datsun King Cab. Next truck will be my last. Not gonna use it much. Probably gonna modify it, update it, baby it. Use it for projects. Turn it into something silly, but no serious lift. I hate that. I used to own a dealership (90s). Recently I remembered the old auction game. Dawned on me I don't care if it has a salvage title as long as it wasn't seriously wrecked. Trucks are modular, aftermarket parts are very competitive, easy enough to install.

Look what they totaled this Raptor for. The only damage I can see. Sounds like much less than your son's. So tempted to make a bid.

I haven't kept up but thought fsd was transferrable in this situation.

Can't say I've kept up with a situation like this but my fsd was transferable until the first of the year. Now it stays with the car. Not sure what gives if its totaled though.

Speaking of my year long truck search. I think I've made a decision that sticks with my ev preference but also moves my Tesla. I was budgeting 25-30 for something used. I also wanted an 8' foot bed the way a truck's supposed to be. This preference and price made ev trucks non-starters. It also goes a little bit to @CGRdrJoe 's son getting something else as a replacement for his Tesla. Maybe the kid ain't so dumb. This may be a dumb reaction, but Teslas have for years been the most vandalized cars. New stories and a report coming soon about last year's stats suggest this most vandalized thing is shooting through the roof. In California Musk hate is a thing, and parking my Y at a stadium or LA shopping center comes with a little paranoia. That could be dumb like worrying about lightning strikes, but it's real. A minor reason I didn't use my CyberTruck number was the attention they get (price being the primary reason).

So I'm gonna go look over a Silverado EV W/T. Pretty sure I don't need to. The RST version goes for 90k+. I'm seeing W/Ts like the one in the link all over SoCal in the low to high 50s. That's not bad for a new truck. It has a 6' bed, bigger than the other ev trucks, and it has a tricky tailgate for extending it out to 8'. It's rated at a phenomenal 450 mile range. Super Cruise, GM's version of FSD, is second only to Tesla and 4-5 years from being caught up. For now it's nearly matching FSD on the open road where I like it the most. I plan owning this truck for life so I can wait. I'll sell the model Y with FSD for 35 and I'm budgeted for 60-65. That should do it, but a truck will become my daily driver, and it won't have the fun offroad mods, but all that's ok. After a year my decisionitis needs to stop. I'm tired of looking and excited about this 450 mile ev beast. In the summer of 2023 MotorTrend's biggest issue was the W/T price pushing 80k. That's where my head's been until seeing the much lower current pricing. There is an offroad trim coming this summer, dubbed Trail Boss. If it takes awhile to sell the Tesla then hopefully it falls in the budget.

If any of you have reason why this couple should not be married, speak now or forever hold your peace.

Funny - I remember when my brother went to college at Bowling Green with his Toyota truck and was really worried because the midwest was vandalizing Japanese cars.

Regarding the Silverado, I assume you compared vs. Lightning and Rivian... if it fits your needs, go for it.

But... does it crab walk? I can't see buying a vehicle that can't crab walk.

after plenty of research the full self driving follows the car and not the account, unless you buy a new one. As is the life of an under 30 kid, he’s thinking tesla over 4runner now

Take a hard look at the Rivian. Outperforms the Silverado and much nicer interior. Software rivals Telsa if not better which is why you see other automakers investing. Customer service has been top notch so far. Had a call today to preemptively replace the 12v battery even though it would have like survived the warranty period.

I did. The Chevy software is better for me. Rivian has nothing like Super Cruise. That's hands free driving and I've been loving it in my Tesla. The Rivian has amazing cargo space for its size, but i'm old school and like a big truck bed. Little 4' beds like the Rivian's is something I've poked fun of for decades. The Chevy's is much bigger and with the midgate option it's bigger than a full size gas burning truck with an 8' bed. 8' bed is the filter I've been using while looking for a used truck. The base Rivian is just out of my price range so the quad motor is just not in consideration.

The Rivian is much much more luxurious. Luxury has never been important to me in a truck, but if it becomes my daily driver I guess it could be. Still even a basic GM work truck in 2025 is nice enough. I've been looking at trucks between 2015 and 2019. The Rivian is also set up for off roading while the Chevy is not.

This is a really thorough 45 minute comparison between Rivian and Silverado EV. He doesn't conclude one is necessarily better than the other. They both have their winning categories. My priority categories, price, range, self driving tech, bed size all get checked by the Chevy. It's understandable someone could have very different priorities and you have a helluva nice truck. In the vid his big problem with the Chevy is that it is way over-priced. 5 months ago he predicted Chevy would make massive discounts and he nailed it. Something I noted noticing in my last post above. They were not even a consideration, but 25k discounts from what they first wanted puts it in my price range.

I just mentioned it because it's a really nice off road vehicle too. Personally I think Rivian has added the sensor and tech to take the lead in self driving. https://www.reuters.com/business/au...free-driving-system-2025-ceo-says-2025-01-23/. Price wise I'd wait for someone to put 10k on a new Gen2 and buy it for 25k off. With the 8 year, 150k battery warranty I'd feel comfortable with the battery life. The storage trumps the bed for me as I like being able to leave my power tools and deer rifle in the gear tunnel and camping/hiking gear in the under the bed storage. I've gotten back 15-20 minutes of my day not having to load and unload crap so it doesn't get stolen. I have been able to handle sheets of plywood with the tail gate down but defintiely would want the Chevy if I was doing more trash outs or regularly hauling mulch.

This is a failure of policy not the technology.

Blows my mind the previous adminstration went all in on EV.

We should have went all in on Hyrdogen fuel cell tech. Burns clean, infrastructure would be far easier with all the gas stations already in place…but no.

Meantime commercial use keeps adopting it.

Anyway is what it is.
The infrastructure isn't there. Not only availability, but production to meet any kind of reasonable transportation demand.
(I'm not sure why you mention gas stations? This is a high-pressure gas vs a liquid)
Look around and see if you can find a high-pressure hydrogen source.
Now look around and see if you can find an outlet.

And also oil companies again control the price of it, and I guarantee they’d make the cost per mile in line with petroleum. Can’t lose out on those profits!

Not necessarily the oil companies. There are different technologies to produce / separate H2:
Steam methane reforming - Natural gas as feedstock, power to make H2
Electrolysis - Water as feedstock, power to make H2
Gasification - Carbon / Coal as feedstock, power to make H2
You may notice a common thread here, so why not use electricity directly?
(Ok, as long as we have the materials to produce batteries, obviously lithium has been an issue)
By the way, the H2 is only as clean / green as the power source, where's your electricity coming from?

Hyrdrogen fuel cells is also a great alternative energy source.

And the EV revolution has stalled and will not be all EV by 2040.

Who knows maybe the planet will blow up by then……beats me.

Meantime I will continue to enjoy my gas powered Nissan Z

I would be very enthusiastic about a Hybrid Nissan Maxima one day…..hopefully that will happen.

I think Hybrid cars is a good way to go considering how much infrastructure is already in place for both gas and electric.

So existing gas stations with pumps in place can’t be retro fitted to use Hydrogen fuel? All these filling stations are obsolete is what you are saying if we want to go Hydrogen? Impossible to upgrade them?

Pretty much. It would be the same process as installing charging stations, but way way more expensive and maintenance intensive. Liquid hydrogen is pressurized like propane. Not in the same game as pumping gas, and there's safety concerns with letting randoms use the gear.

Any EV owner can tell you one of the very best things about them is charging at home. I never bothered to install a level 2 system for faster charging, but they can be had for $1000. I just plug in overnight and I'm full in the morning. Hydrogen can be done with electrolysis but setups are 10k, bulky, require maintanence, produce small amounts (like 3 gallons a day). It's just the wrong tech for vehicles. It's pretty cool for residential power though. I agree there.

Michigan reiumbursed me in full for my home level 2.

Worldwide adoption matters, too. We get too focused on domestic. China, Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Finland all are converting quickly to EVs. Germany getting up there, too, iirc.

Europe in general is adopting faster than the US. Norway's at like 97% EVs at this point. Or something crazy like that.

Yet apparently EVs can't survive winters in the "frigid" midwest. We're such spoiled wusses.

This is where the American manufacturers (outside the obvious Rivian and Tesla) are screwing themselves. Sure, you can sell gas cars to many Americans, but outside the US? Within a few years, they will sell almost none.

I mean the cold weather is a real thing. Love my Bolt but it’s a pita when it gets really cold. Single digits all week and I don’t think I’d be comfortable driving more than 120-130 miles without charging. In other words I can’t get to the ski mountain and back which is only 75 miles away.

Huh - I don't think of my Niro any differently in winter. Man, I love pushing the "crank it to 80 for 10 minutes" button in the app before heading to the garage, though.

Hybrid is beyond stupid IMO. It's like putting props engines on the plane wings and jets on the tail. Makes no sense to install two power plants and have to transmissions. CumN'Go is making more off the coffee they sell to the driver using there Tesla charger than the guy using their pump. EVs cover 95% of the driving done in the US.

Your car doesn’t lose a ton of range when it’s 0-10 degrees out? I’ll get 320-330 in the summer. 180-200 in the dead of winter. Super cold, 150 if I’m using the defroster and heat most of the drive and it’s highway., which makes it 120-130 cause I don’t want to run it too low and get in panic mode.

Hybrid is beyond stupid IMO. It's like putting props engines on the plane wings and jets on the tail. Makes no sense to install two power plants and have to transmissions. CumN'Go is making more off the coffee they sell to the driver using there Tesla charger than the guy using their pump. EVs cover 95% of the driving done in the US.
plug-in hybrids i like. Prius-type hybrids i agree with you.

Can vouch...but Rivian is saying crank the heaters beforehand including the seats and you will get better performance when driving. Pretty simple when you schedule it from thee ap on your phone.

I still don't get it. Why complicate ****?

Maintenance Intervals

  • Tire Rotation and Multi-Point Inspection: every 7,500 mi (12,000 km)
  • Brake Fluid Flush: every 3 years
  • Coolant Change: every 112,500 mi (180,000 km)
  • Drive Unit Fluid Change (Model Year 2022-2024 Quad-Motor AWD vehicles only): every 112,500 mi (180,000 km)

I serious doubt I'll ever need to service the brakes because I might us them once a day.

i'm trying to get people over range anxiety. 30 miles of range covers a lot. if they want to pay for the maintenance of the ICE, let em.

1.i live in a desert, so it's easy for me to mock
2. It's Norway. They're dealing. Search it. There have to be ways they're compensating
