do these count as smoking (for example) on a medical questionnaire for life insurance?
Usually, yes. The question is usually "do you use tobacco products" and these count as a tobacco product.
Wow--that's tough. I'd sure be willing to debate it but can't speak to how these compare to chewing tobacco rather than cigarets. As it stands I'm at 0-nic so not an issue. What I need to do, I think--is reapply to my insurance companies for a reduction in rates! :)
I'd put NO. If they test you tell them you use the nicorette gum.
I think that's a winner but the question is if they consider nicotine a 'tobacco product'. I Agree with your point--We know better so put No down and let them argue against it if they insist.

I feel completely in over my head with all the battery/tank/juice talk.

I started buying the disposables, as recommended above, and it's definitely working for me - I've been buying Blu. I assume that the Blue "starter kits" are a complete ripoff and ultimately a terrible idea long term, but really need to do something simple like that where all I have to do is charge the thing and slip something onto the end when it runs out. If it's harder than lighting a cigarette, I'm sure I'll go back to smoking cigarettes instead. Are there any inexpensive kits that work like that from the places all you hep cats are using? I mean, something where all I have to do is charge it and slip on a new whatever-the-hell-makes-it-vaporize that's filled with liquid and go? Or am I just the target market for the overpriced crap like Blu?
I recommend a volt starter kit to people that want the cig style. Vapor 4 life is really good too and is used by a lot of people here. If I could start all over again I would go a little bigger and get the V4L Dial a volt (Ego style)Volt

V4L
If I go the route of V4L, which of the 4 options do you recommend and why?
The manual dial a volt. You can adjust the voltage, you have more control with the manual switch. I don't trust the automatic batteries.

If I was totally honest I would get a similar product from a different vendor. The problem is they don't have the starter kits. you would have to buy everything ala cart. I would get all from Clouds of Vapor.

Buy two ego twists 1000 mah and a charger.

http://www.cloudsofvapor.com/store/63-joyetech-ego-and-510/172-ego-twist.html

A couple packs of cartomizers.

http://www.cloudsofvapor.com/store/130-cartomizers/65-boge-cartomizers/1710-510-xl-high-performance-cartomizers-steel-18ohm.html

...and some juice.

http://www.cloudsofvapor.com/store/189-vapejuice.html

They carry Alien Visions, which everyone that has tried it loves their Boba's Bounty. In the organic section are my favorites the Vanilla Cream and Butterscotch.

For 10% the coupon code is BIGBUYER.
I would consider this a more intermediate setup, so if you go this route please feel free to ask for help. I would make myself available if you need to skype or something since you will have to fill your own cartomizers. I would also recommend a drip tip with this setup. If you go the V4L route you you can order pre-filled cartomizers and be ready to go.
OK, so I'm getting the manual dial-a-volt.. It's basically a battery and a charger.. What else do I need?

You need some cartomizers. They hold the liquid and the heating element. Get a couple different flavors in case you might not like something.

Found my flavor. Wish I could share it with everyone but it's sold only locally. Tastes like a Parliament cigarette, kind of, and I'm mixing it with a Turkish Gold kind of flavor, half and half.

I'm betting you move on from cig flavor pretty quickly. Most people like that at first but once you are off the cigs for a bit you will want to explore other flavors...and you will probably find a few you like much better. That said, for now, enjoy the fact that you're off cigs for good (hopefully).

That would be cool, too. I'm not sure if that will happen. A big part of smoking for me was the tobacco flavor. Smoked a pipe for awhile. Rolled my own for a long time, or smoked unfiltered. Only went to filtered cigarettes because they were allegedly a little better for me.

It's also not lost on me that I just referred to smoking in the past tense. Which may be the first time that's happened, including when I had quit for over a year.

Stopped by a local smoke shop today and picked up a disposable "blu" just to try one out. While there the guy let me try another product he was selling that included a battery, 3 chargers, a refillable reservoir, a bottle of juice and what he says in the strongest battery on the market. "e2go" I think is what it was called.. He wanted $89 for the setup..

Something odd about that setup Hustler--three chargers for one 'strongest battery on the market? Weird name which sounds somewhat familiar? ok.

It's interesting that there are local options out there now. On the one hand it would have been nice to try out equipment before purchase. On the other hand, I'd have no idea what I was comparing against.

Just ordered this setup here

The 1000mah and 3.5 tank

Also ordered 5 flavored bottles of juice and a sampler pack

I've been smoking the Blu and Fin disposables.. Pretty excited to move on to the next step

I just thought I'd add a little note of encouragement from my experience with these things.

After 25 years of smoking and many attempts to quit I finally got a year smoke-free in January thanks to this thread. After tapering for the second half of that year I quit vaping as well and now have three months with no nicotine at all. I rarely think of vaping and almost never of smoking. It was all so easy it's really hard for me to believe it actually happened. I think of myself as a non-smoker which is a huge change psychologically in how you view yourself and the world around you.

Like someone mentioned above I really thought that if I ever actually quit I would spend the rest of my life fighting cravings every ten minutes. Hasn't been that way at all. If you find yourself struggling just up the mgs a little. It shouldn't be that hard if you are doing everything correctly.

Many thanks to this thread and good luck to everybody!
 Congratulations.

Looks like a solid setup. I really like myfreedomsmokes. They are really quick and I by all my unflavored nicotine from them.Very exited about cincy finally getting a good B+M store. Altsmoke has been around a long time, based out of Ohio. I use the silver bullet which is probably the highest selling battery mod.

I am really liking the twist battery and that tank looks like an upgraded one of my model as well--excellent setup.

Ditto that Congrats! I'm on and off even the vaping as well. For those times I want one it's with 0-nic.

that's awesome.

Just received my package today..

Thoughts:

I like the performance of this new equipment. Hit's much better than the disposables..

The ego twist 1000 with the 3.5 tank doesn't seem like equipment you'd carry around for daily use.. It's cumbersome.. Maybe better suited for a vaping meet up, or vaper lounge use..

I should have purchased several, smaller, less expensive tanks so I could switch to other juices regularly. It will take a while to smoke 3.5 ml..

I think I'll still purchase a smaller unit that will be easier to carry around.

Not unhappy with my purchase, but I think I may have over shot my objective a little bit..

I dont find the 1000 may/3.5 tank cumbersome at all. Anything smaller would be too dainty since I moved up from the cig sized unuts. I take mine everywhere - bars, restaurants, movies...I dont even bother being stealthy with it anymore. People seem to know what it is right when they see it now and barely bat an eye. I also have 3 tanks I keep different flavors in so I can switch out whenever I feel like it.As for vaoing 3.5ml of juice, it takes me 3-4 hours before I have to refill (although I never let it get empty so I dont burn up the cartridges), but I guess I'm considered a heavy vaper. Good luck, I'm sure you'll find something in your sweet spot soon enough.

Marlboro to jump into the e-cig market

RICHMOND, Va. The Marlboro Man may soon be hitching his wagon to a new kind of cigarette.

Altria Group Inc., owner of the nations biggest cigarette maker, Philip Morris USA, announced Thursday that its NuMark subsidiary plans to introduce an electronic cigarette during the second half of the year, making it the last of the major domestic tobacco companies to enter the growing category.

While its a small market compared with traditional tobacco products, theres no denying that adult tobacco consumers have shown some interest in it, Altria CEO Marty Barrington said in a conference call with investors. Details on the product, the market it will enter and whether it will be under the top-selling Marlboro brand name were not revealed.

The move is the latest in an industrywide push to diversify beyond the traditional cigarette business, which has become tougher in the face of tax hikes, smoking bans, health concerns and social stigma.

Reynolds American Inc., owner of the second-biggest U.S. cigarette maker, has begun limited distribution of its first electronic cigarette under the Vuse brand and Lorillard Inc., the nations third-biggest tobacco company, acquired e-cigarette maker Blu Ecigs in April 2012.

Electronic cigarettes are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid nicotine solution in a disposable cartridge, creating vapor that users inhale. Some e-cigarettes are made to look like a real cigarette with a tiny light on the tip that glows like the real thing.

Devotees tout them as a way to break addiction to real cigarettes. They insist the devices address both the nicotine addiction and the behavioral aspects of smoking without the more than 4,000 chemicals found in cigarettes.

The Food and Drug Administration plans to assert regulatory authority over e-cigarettes in the near future. Public health officials say the safety of e-cigarettes and their effectiveness in helping people quit regular smokes havent been fully studied.

The market for e-cigarettes has grown from the thousands of users in 2006 to several million worldwide. Analysts estimate sales could double this year to $1 billion. Some go as far as saying consumption of e-cigs could surpass consumption of traditional cigarettes in the next decade.

Lorillard CEO Murray Kessler on Wednesday estimated that e-cigarettes drove total industry cigarette volumes down about 600 million cigarettes, or about 1 percent, during the first quarter, excluding Internet sales a major avenue for e-cig purchases.

It's amazing to see how far e-cigs have come in the relatively short period that all of us have been in this thread. It seems that not too long ago, to upgrade from a cigarette-style batt and carto one would have to search out different websites and sometimes order from various companies to get the setup one was looking for. Now on just about every site one can get a starter kit or a more advanced kit or supplies.

It seems only logical that some companies will start selling more stylized/customized ecigs. Perhaps with branding on them or the name/design of popular bands. But it also seems likely if they start being regulated that the FDA will step in and put a halt to that because it won't want ecigs marketed/desirable to kids. I just hope they don't start taxing the hell out of them because one of the beauties of ecigs is the cost savings and if someone has to pay close to as much as it costs for regular cigs it may dissuade some people from bothering to try.

2 questions that I'll be looking up answers for myself as well, but I'm interested in getting info from you guys on as well.

There are hookah lunges, and cigar lounges etc, and I've heard of but not seem shops set up to fill the needs of the more avid e-cigg customer. Do you guys think these shops are decent investments, and what about a "Vaping" (I find thats what the avid e-cigg folks call it.. Vaping) lounge? Where you can buy and trade products, test out, hang out, etc..

What are the health effects or ramifications of e-ciggs, if any?

There are a couple of vape lounges around here that I know of, one in Bradenton and one in Tampa, both are called Totally Wicked Vapor's Lounge and sell TW products. I've stopped in to pick up products, there was a few people hanging out, trying flavors, etc. Both times were during the day, so I dont know how much business they do.As for the effects, there haven't been enough studies yet to determine the long term effects of ecigs yet. There is talk of the FDA regulating ecigs in the near future, so maybe they will release some study info.

Alright, upon reflection:

1. The Volt feels great, I enjoy it, but the battery doesn't last long enough. I'm going to need to carry around spares everywhere I go or go with a bigger battery, which I don't want to do.

2. Nobody sells stuff that fits an 808 battery (the Volt size). I can get 510 everything all over the place, 808 just doesn't exist in physical stores. Kind of frustrating not to be able to pick stuff up carts at my vape place along with juice.

All in all, super awesome. Also, have a bit of a feeling of exclusivity in it, because people have no idea what a Volt is. And then they realize it's an 808 and consider me an old man using a flip phone. Which is also cool with me.

Thanks for all the advice, folks.

You can buy 510 to 808 adapters

You can get a pocket charger that uses a photo battery. I don't know what size batteries you have. If they are shorties (65mm) ill send you mine, cause I never use it. They sell one for the bigger batteries.

First time caller...

Without having to go back through the entire thread are there any disposables that are worth trying? Before going whole-hog I'd like to test the waters. Any suggestions?

Where are you--maybe someone can point to a specific place. These are becoming mainstream enough that there are kiosks in shopping malls, counters in tobacco shops, displays in gas stations....selling generic or even branded samples. Usually they will offer a cigaret flavor among the choices, often will have a disposable model which feels like a cigaret to maintain what you're used to. Sometimes you'll be fortunate enough to be close to a major marketer such as the eGo kiosk near me, where they have a wide range of flavors in their disposables and will then discount that cost ($10) towards a full model set if you decide you like it.

Thanks. I don't think we have any kind of a specific retailer here. I've seen the disposables at mini-marts etc.

Is there any way to tell how equivalent a disposable is to a pack of smokes? I think I've seen a Swisher brand of e-cig for $7 or $8 at the store near my house. How would that compare to $5 for 20 regular cigs?

ETA: Just looked at their website. They claim that one of their disposables "can equal about two packs of smokes". Does that sound realistic or are they just blowing smoke? (see what I did there?)

What do you smoke?

I had great luck with Fin disposables, definitely showed me that I was able to make the switch.

A disposable - depending on the brand - will be the equivalent of somewhere between a pack and two packs of cigarettes.

I'd guess that they are pretty equivalent but it's really hard to tell since you're not going to vape the same way--it's not a 'start 'til you burn filter' kind of thing, more like a cigar you enjoy and put down occasionally. The one time I bought a disposable it actually lasted weeks but I was really in a good place by that point. You may also have a choice of nicotine strength but again--my experience was with a full service kiosk. I know around here they have them in at least a third of the gas stations I encounter, and also at both JR's in my range.

Despite thinking Scrumptch is pulling my leg yes you could vape in the shower but if you drown the battery that's all she wrote.

And going back to your original post Pete--I spent some time reading the first pages of this thread before making the jump. That's where you can get a real good general sense of these and some basics without being immersed in the mods. You may find it inspiring! :)

I've been using a Kanger Protank the last couple of weeks. These things are completely legit and I highly recommend them to any fans of tanks. It's not carto-based, and it is a bottom-feeding set-up, but it just works fantastically.

Have you used the ViVi nova? How does it compare?

I'm still having trouble regulating my intake, not sure if I'm getting too much or too little nicotine with v4L carts. Also it gives me heartburn, which sucks.

Are you getting them prefilled or filling them yourself?
Prefilled. I'm not sure it's about the device but more about how I'm using it. Marlboro Light smoker with 24mg carts so I don't know how much five puffs is worth. Is this something that is common or am I just deficient?

I have found the three flavors I like best so that's helping me. Still not full time but I'm slowly adjusting my habits and using the v4L in the car and at work.

You could have a sensitivity to the PG. you may want to get some blank carts and try a high VG or 100% VG liquid.

24mg is pretty high. I'd recommend trying 18 or 16mg. 24-36mg is considered closer to full flavor/filterless strength. I smoked Marlboro lights and I make my juice between 15-18mg nicotine.

Ah, so I'm getting too much then. I have some 18mg carts but maybe I'll start ordering those in the future instead of the 24mg ones. Too much better than not enough though I guess.

I need some e-liquid recipes.. I just purchased a bottle of nicotine and a few flavorings (menthol, tobacco, Jamaican rum, and a sweetener called ethyl maltol)

Whats a basic mixture (drops per ml etc)..

Are there flavors i should be looking for?

Whats your favorite recipe?
