Explain to the class why you watch First Take, Get Up, etc. (1 Viewer)

I assume these are morning sports talk shows? I don't know of anything I find more boring than these shows that talk about sports like they are life and death. Don't get me wrong, I'll watch sportscenter or maybe some high level analysis shows, but all this crap that has only been created out of the need to fill 24 hours of programming and have these panels of experts discussing the artificial drama of the day is not for me..

First Things First on FS1 is the only one I watch, and when I say watch, I mean check out a few clips because I cannot watch it since it is during work hours. The chemistry between Nick Wright, Chris Broussard and Kevin Wildes makes it a fun show. And Wildes is a legitimately hilarious guy.

I bailed on ESPN many years ago.

I never really had time to watch the shows and never really cared to. Lately after work and the gym, while making my dinner, I’ll throw YouTube on and watch the clips from the day. First Things First is definitely the best of the bunch imo. Undisputed is a complete joke because every single topic turns into a Cowboy discussion. First Take is pretty similar. I wish Nick Wright and Dan Orlovsky had their own show together. They’re both pretty objective and know what they’re talking about.

I just watch the first take clips on espn.com. I find mad dog russo to be pretty fun. The other folks like to poke fun at him as well and his sometimes antiquated positions and he's a good sport about it. Always say I'll put it on and just passively listen, but never do.

I sometimes accidentally put on ESPN while First Take is on, out of default to trying to put on SportsCenter. Then, greeted with someone screaming about the Cowboys or Lebron, and realize my mistake.

I mean I'm out the door at 6am so its really only when I'm wfh but its never usually these shows

I hate all those shows and so t watch any of them. I do miss Marcellus Wiley. I watch PTI daily but that’s it. ESPN is so dumb they don’t even stream it on YT, so I watch some stream from some Asia-pacific island.

ESPN should just go back and watch their programming from the 90s-2000s and just re-create it w/o the social commentary and they would be back on top.

Nope. Pro Football Talk sometimes, Dan Patrick, Rich Eisen sometimes, and some KDKA sometimes.

I don't watch any of that crap. It is so repetitive and dumb it's a waste of time. I am shocked it still has a market.
This. Especially with plenty of super high quality podcasts out there, if you want your sports content, turn that **** off and listen to good stuff.

i am not a fan of national talk shows. i hardly care about analyzing last night’s sacramento kings v trail blazer game. i don’t care about what lebron said to someone. i care about my teams. none discuss hockey. i go sport specific, if the knicks played, i’ll watch nba channel the next morning. same with the rangers and hockey. i’ll watch nfl tv monday morning. otherwise, blecch. maybe even mlb network.

I can't stand those shows. Good assignment. How are their ratings high enough to justify their existence? There must be some market for them, even if it's a hatewatch market.

its like this...go to walmart or the DMV to be reminded of just how dumb the idiot masses are...or just look at the ratings for these shock jock sports shows...it's absurd they have an audience but here we are.

I haven’t had cable for many years, and hardly watch TV at all in general, but my parents still do. Apparently my mind went back in time to when I last lived with them as a teenager in the 90’s as I flipped to ESPN the other morning while I was over there thinking I’d catch a little bit of SportsCenter just to find out Get Up was on. There were 6 people at the desk and all of them were talking at the same time. Apparently one of them said something funny at some point because they all started laughing at the same time and then it went to commercial break. That was enough for me as I proceeded to turn the TV off after that.

I don’t watch sports unless I’m actually watching sports
Same. I find all of the pre-game/post-game/analysis/whatever programming on broadcast television to be insufferable.

In fairness, there are some extremely niche podcasts that I will watch, specifically devoted to my favorite team. That's it though. I don't watch any of the other stuff out there.

It's probably not a coincidence that ESPN and CNN fell off the exact same cliff more or less at the exact same time.

Excellent way of putting it.

Growing up I used to watch all those pregame shows. Would just inhale nfl on Fox pregame with Bradshaw but probably haven’t seen it in 10 years. I turn the tv on at 1:00 now and am ready to go.

Occasionally I’ll watch the nfl network during Super Bowl week just to see what the vibe is around the host city. They usually show a decent amount of that.

Should be called "The Wrong Take" Talking all sport talk shows.

Just like Sports Radio they have to create content, drama and controversy. Half of the takes are incorrect or personal views.

Blowhards like Seven A and Skip Bayless are wrong more than right. Shannon Sharpe thinks he just needs to talk louder than anyone. The yelling and arguing on the shows are part of their schtick but gets old real fast.

Even the football stuff has become over the top. I liked Dan Orlavsky at first but he wears me out now too. I remember when the Lions hired Dan Campbell Steven A. went on for a week on what a horrible hire it was like one of the worst of all time and he should have never been a HC anywhere. Now he is a big fan of DC.

I was going to mention this one yesterday as one of the worst and then today I see a couple people listen to/watch him. Cowherd is unlistenable, like nails on a chalkboard. Rich Eisen goes off at 2pm and locals come on on the Wisconsin station I use to tune in so I tried Cowherd for a while and I just can't do it. I'd do those crap ESPN shows before the herd. Only positive about his show was when Jason Taylor's sister was on and now she's gone.

I haven’t watched those types of shows for a decade or more. I will admit that I did used to watch First Take way back in the day, but that was before the world of sports was over saturated with journalists and and influencers who flood the market with hot takes. I also find that watching/following professional sports has become less of an interest and consequently has occupied less of my time as I have aged. Don’t get me wrong—I still do follow sports—but now looking at a box score, watching a couple minute highlight clip, chatting with my buddies about sports is enough.

Cowherd used to be good, but I think he has too much going on now (his daily show and his podcast thing) to where he doesn't know what he is talking about too often now since there is no way he has time to watch all the games.

I only listen to music and podcasts. Good morning football, the herd and a few others are made into podcasts. I find GNF moderately interesting, the best of the herd is an easy listen and some of their takes are interesting.

Edit - I don’t think any of the people are necessarily right on most things, but perspectives can be interesting.

He makes "hot takes" for effect, to get people incensed and talking about him. And those takes are wrong at least as often as they're right but he'll remind you about how he's always right and how smart he is. Not my cup of tea.

I will listen to some podcasts as well. I often find their analysis either more niche as you say or just most intelligent than the cable broadcasts or sports talk radio.

It took me until a couple of weeks ago to realize that Gronk was on Fox's crew now. What a clown.

I don't mind his show during football season. The rest of the year he just rambles about Lebron and how great California is.

I mostly agree with a notable exception for Inside the NBA. Just a knowledgable group of guys who get along well and make me laugh. CBS/Paramount+ has a similar vibe on their European soccer broadcasts that I enjoy. Throw in the occasional SVP Sportscenter particularly following a fun game.

It took me until you made this post to realize that. He sits next to Terry or Howie? Like a full time thing?

I actually like that show more I do watching the nba at this point

i think nfl football pre game shows need more than 6 people sitting at a table. i would like them to have an enormous knights templar table with around 24 analysts. the analysis is just so in depth. especially the “i sat down with….” pieces.

I sleep in my office w/ the TV on SportsCenter all night. Just helps me sleep. I end up waking up right around 7am with Stephen A. Smith screaming at something and I just flip to NFLN and "watch" Good Morning Football for a few minutes before getting up. I'll have that on as I get ready for work.
