Explosions at Boston Marathon (1 Viewer)

Oooof. Just found out "the guy in the wheelchair" Is the younger brother of a guy I played football with in High School.
Damn. His injury was incredibly horrific ...has it been life-threatening?
Not sure. It was just posted on facebook.
I dont think it is life threatening. but not good. Ref - we must have a bunch of mutual friends. What year did you get out of Stoneham high?
Yeah - class of 1993.

Seems like Marc is going to be OK? I graduated with his older brother.
92 here. I'm not sure. From the photo which I now wish i hadn't seen, it looks worse than I originally heard.

:kicksrock:

What was his older brothers name?
Ed. Nice guy.

Brother in law works at the Copley Mall. Luckily he was off today. Was also going to take the kids to see the race but changed their minds last second. Thank god.

I have to tear into Matt Lauer, just seems dumber and dumber as each crisis pops up. His opening words tonight were to tell us how awesome the hospitals are that everyone is being treated to tonight...just stop! Just interview people, tell us the facts but gushing over the hospitals in Boston is not a needed part of the story.

Brian Williams now doing the same thing. NBC only network to interrupt 10PM shows to give an extra hour of coverage tonight, not even sure what they would show on NBC this time on a Monday.

So no real arrests have been made?

Yea. Name is familiar. Last name at least.

This was weird.

Was using Google News earlier and saw this headline mixed in with all the bomb-related results: "Ripon native leaves Boston Marathon shortly before bombs explode."

Knew as soon as I saw the headline who the article was about -- an ex-GF who grew up in Ripon and works for UST&F. Very strange way to come across someone from your past.

And now WBC is going to protest the funerals of those poor souls who didn't survive the bombings :( WTF is wrong with these #######s???
You think the Boston area is known as a racist town? Well the dirty little secret is that in many parts it is. If these poor bastards show up to protest it won't be the turn the cheek crowd that shows up to greet them. I promise you that.

I hope to God you are right. Those #######s deserve a good beat down.

No, just a couple of fake arrests, a few disingenuous arrests, and then one outright counterfeit arrest. But no real ones.

Matt Lauer and Brian Williams are clearly the problem here. Please.

Saw a tweet by Joe Haggerty the hockey reporter mentioned that he knew this individual from Stoneham as well.

Didn't you just post in here a few minutes ago chastising other posters for attacking each other and now here you are ripping into TV anchors?

Was thinking about this while reading the FBG/cellphone thread, but now it's kind of surreal to me. I communicate with people on here with semi-regularity, but I really wonder if I actually know anyone or not. Only one previous FBG that I know for sure, and I stumbled upon that purely by accident.

Not sure how much of a secret it is. But my first thought when I saw that post was a heh...good luck with that.

Joe is a friend of mine, and he grew up in Stoneham. I'm guessing he would have graduated around the same time.

Paid millions to do his job, very different than watching two posters try to say the ugliest things they can to each other or about each other. I'm allowed to be a critic of Matt. I'm not attacking posters.

He was class of 92. Joes a great guy as well. His father was great. Was an extra in almost every movie filmed in Boston in the 90's.

Matt, his cousin, is a cool dude too. Use to play cards and drink together.

His sister, Jenny, some hooters on her, huh?

Yeah, nothing important to speak of going on in hospitals.

I was in the bleachers across the street from the explosions. I saw some things I can never unsee today.I hope everybody here is ok.
Damn man. So sorry to hear this.I don't want to sound sanctimonious or even pretend to understand what you went through today, but take advantage of any counseling you can. Some #### is too much for us to deal with on our own.

Watching that brought me to tears. Bless his soul, he looked like he was in shock. I hope he had someone to go home to or he gets to a hospital himself. Unbelievable

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.” – Fred Rogers
Research tells us that this is exactly the kind of situation that should lead people to freeze up, diffuse responsibility, and assume that “others” will help if it is needed. But here’s what I want to point out. Here’s what I wrote this entire post to point out. That’s not what happened.

When faced with unimaginable tragedy, in a terrifying situation where people did not know how to respond or behave, when no one could know if there would be any more bombs being detonated or any more people being harmed, in a set of circumstances that, by all logic and reason, should have discouraged most people from lending a hand, people still jumped into the crowd and helped. In droves. They stepped up, pitched in, helped strangers. They put themselves in potential danger to make sure that strangers were okay.

It’s so easy to get dismayed about humanity on days like today. To wonder how people can do such horrible things. But this is why I like Mr. Rogers’ words of wisdom. This is why I have decided, today, to look at the helpers. Because the helpers show us that even when faced with unimaginable tragedy, terror, and tumult, there is a monumentally strong force within each of us that truly wants to help our fellow man. We all have that seed of good. It can defy logic, reason, and empirical scientific data. And even when everything around us — those “powerful situations” that us social psychologists love to say determine everything about what we do and who we are — combines in perfect synchrony to create the exact blend of factors that should push anyone away from helping, we can’t underestimate the power of that drive within us all that doesn’t care about what the textbook says and pushes us towards doing good anyway.

What a beautiful thing.

Also, it sure seems like there are at least 2-3 people that are dead in those photos, I'm a little surprised the death toll is only at 3 right now. Hopefully that is true and doesn't go any higher.

Yeah, protesting a funeral of someone killed in Boston is going to be a little different than protesting a funeral of a soldier from a small town in Missouri.
A lot of times these fools threaten to picket but never show up.

Is this where GM tells us he is fishing?

Yup.

There are always more good people than bad. For every one evil person like whomever did this horrible thing, there are 20 people who want to help. We have to remember this. Most people are good. It bears repeating again and again, especially in moments like these.

Were it not for the upset that I'm sure even an attempt to protest a funeral would cause family/friends of the deceased, I would post something along the lines of "I would like to see them try."

Ball bearings being removed from people? Doesn't sound like your run of the mill homemade bomb. This is some serious ####.
Not that hard to get ball bearings. And not high brow of a concept to think that ball bearings around the explosive will do more damage.
Sounded bad. Shows what I know about bombs.
Adding shrapnel to the bomb wouldn't be beyond anyone sick enough to this crap. I think the Columbine kids filled theirs with nails and crushed glass.

no stop it sanitized America.

show those pictures

show them

and then when we know who did it

then have them justify it

f peace

Well if it's in some rich suburb they might get away with it to a point. If they have to go to Southie or the North End..... I'd love to see it.

Don't worry folks, Boston PD will be there to make sure nobody gives you any trouble for exercising your First Amendment right to be an #######. Well, maybe.

I'm sure it was chaotic, and you can't really tell from a still picture the "sense of urgency", but it's just weird to me that someone is taking a picture instead of putting a tourniquet on that guy's thigh.

Wow, just found out a co-worker who was running the race was in between the two blasts when they went off. He jumped the barrier and ran into Copley Place Mall.
