Explosions in Manchester? (1 Viewer)

It's going to happen with a chemical attack or dirty bomb of some sort to start but I totally agree.  These guys are killing children, there's no extreme they won't go to.
Sadiq Khan on record saying this part of life in a big city following the recent attack on a police officer certainly doesn't help matters throughout England. It's not a part of life, purposely attacking a venue with children is the worst form of terrorism I could think of and should be met with as strong a response as possible.

The video on CNN is weird. People streaming down some stairs running in every direction while others simply look on just standing there. Were they coming out of the arena?

England's election is scheduled for June 8 - not really sure how this will play out - conceding that this was not likely the Peaky Blinders, it would seem to strengthen the hand of pro-Brexit MPs, but I think the Conservative Party is going to maintain control - although they were not pro-Brexit when it was voted upon.

Poland is not a country that has a tradition of taking in refugees. They're not about that. We are.

Poland is not a place you come to, it's a place you leave (like my grandparents did.)
Seems like that is changing.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/3068281/polands-cities-are-thriving-again-as-thousands-return-home-since-brexit-after-we-found-deserted-streets-four-years-ago/

“According to the latest research, for the first time in years we have a net positive migration balance in the 20 to 29 age group — meaning more people are coming to Lodz than leaving it.”

What we have to do is think about what type of attack they may come up with. Here is an example: This hasn't happened yet but they will get around to figuring it out.

To terrorists, the number of death doesn't matter to them. It's about striking fear that it can happen anywhere at anytime. I fully expect them to figure out that a car bomb in a parking deck at one of these events is an easy target.
I went to a soccer game in Paris a month after the Nov 2015 attacks.  We were searched four times entering the stadium including a security cordon two blocks away.

But after the match thousands of fans packed into the metro station for 10-15 minutes.  It seemed like an obvious target to me.  Litte security, a packed enclosed space and the ability to kill and cripple a mass transit system.  It was the only time I've ever been frightened at a sporting event.

Drive into just about any parking garage and it's an eye opener. Maybe not NYC but in most cities is my guess. Certainly the city I am nearest. Hell, they can set off a small bomb sending people to the parking deck, fleeing and set off the real bomb.

My wife and I were just saying the same. That was weird footage
Those are parents waiting for their kids to get out of the concert, probably have no idea what had happened above - I think that area is by the train station.*

*If its the same video I am thinking of...

Agreed.

My only additional thought is that, as we kill them, let's try to avoid creating new ones at the same time.
You have to kill their children then too. When you don't, every one of their kids becomes another "My name is Inigo Montoya... you killed my father.... prepare to die."

So we just have to sit around and "take it?"
Not that you have to take it but there's no way to ever eradicate it completely. That said, I think we also have to be smarter when we fight it. As others alluded to, killing one terrorist could create 5 more if not done properly.

the problem is who are we fighting and how do we stop them? even if profiling wasnt frowned upon it would still be next to impossible to pick out a terrorist from a normal  thinking person...you just dont know who is who until its too late

I'm not going to bother reading any of the posts here.  Pretty easy to predict what's being said.

That being said...this is absolutely horrible.  My heart goes out to all those affected.

Yes, it's incredibly complicated. It is the singular struggle of our times. Maybe the war on terrorism can or can't be won. But Western Civilization can't give into defeatism on this issue.

Bottom line is we are being hunted and targeted for extermination for no reason other than hate

Agree 100%. We would be better off focusing on the problems we can control. Americans are more likely to die at the hands of an American than a foreign terrorist. Someone you know well is much more likely to kill you than a terrorist. Terrorism is a serious issue that needs addressing but it's a drop in the bucket compared to all the other threats in our country. The issue is those have no easy answers either.

And this is all that needs to be said...man, why can't people just check their "Own positions" and send some thoughts and condolences to the UK people.

We will have plenty of time tomorrow for that BS....

Hate seems to be at the heart of so much of the violence in this world? How do we combat it in all its many forms?
the whole thing reminds me of a quote in the original Dawn of the dead movie when a priest says '' we must stop the killing ,or lose the war'' ...every time someone killed someone they would rise up and kill even more people

Been out a few hours and just now seeing this news. I took my daughter and her friend to an Ariana Grande concert last year, crowd was pretty much 80% teen or pre-teen little girls. Difficult to imagine the horror of something like this going down.

It's just insane how quick people are to hurt others. It doesn't seem like any country or culture has been able to avoid it. Human history is one war after another genicide after another massacre with tragedies, abuses and horrors scattered between.

the need to hurt and kill for no real reason is so beyond my comprehension....but thank god for that ....i cant imagine what drives those people and what kind of life they must live

I'm not gonna come in and say the basic "blah blah blah Muslim something".

Instead I will make a more broad, easily (mostly) agreeable statement. Good job religion. You defy logic yet again.

The evil among us are a small minority. Most people of all stripes are good. Look at all of the people of Manchester, rushing to help. We need to keep remembering that most of us are good.

I'd like to br able to say it's a "them" issue but when you look at the scope of human violence, it's hard for any male to make it a us vs. them issue. How many people were violently killed in the 20th century? Half a billion maybe? An atomic bomb here, terrorist attach there. Serial killlers and gang wars. World Wars and civil wars.  Several genocides. Makes me sick just thinking about it all.

The vast majority of ALL religious people are good. Please stop.
I'm not disagreeing. However, the next question becomes do these types of events happen if there is no religion? I do not believe that to be true. Religion is good in theory, but often becomes misguided, unintentionally or in some cases intentionally.

I disagree with you. Here's what I think: there are evil people out there, extremists. Some of them are also mentally ill. These people use their religious beliefs as justification for their evil. But if the religion didn't exist, they'd find another justification. The evil is with them.

Per CNN, on social media those associated with ISIS haven't yet taken credit, but they're certainly celebrating this as a "victory." What bastards.

There's been so many examples of religious violence and discrimination that I would love to see what happens without it. I don't think it's anything inherently wrong with the religions, I just think it provides another massive way people can divide themselves.

Another terrorist attack.  Time for tim to argue with people for 16 pages.

Here's the compendium thread for actual news for those who want to follow the news: https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/6cqdye/manchester_arena_explosions_two_loud_bangs_heard/
John I really don't want to argue with anyone tonight. I ####### hate this.

I didn't want to read that religion is responsible, and I didn't want to read that all refugees is responsible, so I responded. But if you want I'll stop. I have two teenage daughters, OK? This sort of thing is the worst.

Religion is merely a tool.  Bad people manipulate others with it, use it as a shield/justification for bad stuff.

It is the strongest tool for these things man has ever invented.. but only a tool.

It's alright, just hate when you (and, to be fair, others) do it while the story is still developing.  There's a thread for that type of argument, and it's relative here, but in the first few hours, I think it's better to get the news out there first.  Ignore the guys immediately doing the anti-Islam shtick if you can until tomorrow or something.  That's my personal preference, I don't want to tell you how to do things though - that's not my call.  Cheers either way.
