Fantasy football millionaire offers draft tips (1 Viewer)

Is this the guy with the pimp suit on the ad banner for Fanball FFOC? I like the white cap...kinda puts the exclamation on the outfit.

Shane is a really nice guy......I did an interview with him last year after he won the FFOC and when I get to my other computer will post it here. Remarkable WIN considering his first two picks were Addai and LJ!

....and he is right about RB in that format, because there is no PPR

Fantasy Football’s 1st Millionaire

Shane Schroeder may be a lot like you as a fantasy football player. The thirty one year old has been playing FF for about ten years, mainly with friends. He has played fantasy basketball and is interested in playing fantasy baseball.

Schroeder is a Youth Corrections Officer in Fort Collins, Colorado and when a couple of the local leagues he had played in folded last August and he was just in the league he was running, he wanted another league, so he decided to look around the internet and found the FFOC.

It looked good to Shane – payouts were good, he liked the setup and he could get a discount on three teams and still only be in for a little over three hundred dollars. So he played three teams – you saw the draft for one of them in “FF – A Test in Time” – and when the smoke cleared after Week 16 of the 2008 season, Shane Schroeder, a young, single guy who loves fantasy football was $1 Million richer.

YES – I said MILLION. Schroeder was one of the fifteen finalists in the FFOC and was flown to Las Vegas will all the other finalists to hang out, meet each other, watch the games (they were all guaranteed to win something), drink beer, and swap FF stories. The contest was not actually decided until after the MNF game as there were several shifts in positions, but the bottom line for Schroeder was the top spot in the FFOC, winning a million dollars and for now at least top spot amongst all the FF players in the land.

Schroeder wanted to load up on running backs as part of his strategy, knowing that when they touch the ball enough, especially in the right offense or against the right opponents they can put up some really high scores. The FFOC in addition to 1QB, 2RB, 3WR and 1TE has a Flex player which can be any offensive player which in fact led many drafters to draft quarterbacks (too) early and often. Schroeder thought if he got two decent starting quarterbacks he would still have the option of playing one of them if the matchup was favorable in a given week or playing a third running back.

So let’s look at that draft again…….

1.05 – Joseph Addai – who knew then how bad he would be?

2.06 - Larry Johnson – there was considerable upside, just didn’t happen

[Note – even though they didn’t work out, Addai and Johnson both had a few decent games]

3.05 - Andre Johnson – good hit here

4.06 - Michael Turner – finally got his RB1

5.05 - Anquan Boldin – sensational early

6.06 - Philip Rivers – Really good pick here

7.05 – Laveranues Coles – and a not so good one but again a few good games

8.06 - Tony Gonzalez – STUD in TE leagues, especially in 2008

9.05 - Aaron Rodgers – this was a gold mine pick

10.06 – Nate Burleson – one week and OUT

11.05 – Donte Stallworth – yes, a wasted pick

12.06 - DeAngelo Williams - $$$$ just like in most leagues, SOD

13.05 - Vernon Davis – seemed like a good idea in August

14.06 - Green Bay DST – scored very well early in the season

15.05 - Jerious Norwood – some help and very good pick regardless

16.06 - Mason Crosby – solid kicker with range

17.05 - Tennessee Titans DST – excellent pick and great late in season

18.06 - Reggie Williams – have to try and some have to fail

19.05 - Kolby Smith – good backup try

20.06 - Jeff Garcia – certainly a decent backup QB

The only key free agent acquisition that Schroeder made was picking up Ted Ginn Jr. who rarely made the lineup, but made a big contribution in Week 16 when Boldin was out again.

Schroeder says “the whole experience with the FFOC was great…..I was just happy to be invited to the final weekend party. The opportunity to meet Jerry Rice was great. He is a legendary receiver and more importantly just a great person, a really nice guy at the party.”

Schroeder admits he didn’t really know what to expect in Las Vegas. Sometimes the big lights turn competitors crazy, but as he says “that was not the case at all. Every team owner from top to bottom was great and we all seemed to get along.”

Quite a thrill for Shane Schroeder and something we all fantasize about.

He should write a book "How to spot the field the first two rounds and still win seven figures"(of course, who cares how you do it as long as the check clears.)

If this guy can win mad cash it has to be some sort of pyramid scheme or other ##### trick.

And if he can win.. who were the  that lost to him?

Same ones who paid subscription to his pearls of wisdom?

I realize he is bald but the hat just screams of trying waaaaayyy to hard.

Now show me a guy with a pocket protector and some ho-ho's and you might get me past the 1st page. That style is wack and played out.

Lol. The winning team had the #2 and #4 QBs on its roster, having 2 strong QBs is a great strat for this format- there just happened to be a year where you could get top 5 QB points in rounds 6-10. Getting Deangelo in the 12th is nuts though. I know he wasn't a top 5 round guy but I had 6 teams and I don't think he made it out of the 10th round in any of them, mostly in the 6-8th range.

heh bacon I think I"ve seen you in some FFOC leagues this or last year.
Yeah, for sure. Last year was a great setup- they offered a pretty good sized overlay in the prize pool and I had 6 teams- I got to the final cut line with 1 of them but I couldn't stomach Westy fading down the stretch. I'm in for 10 teams this year and have drafted 8. I started getting lazy though, my last 4 teams are just named bacon, didn't want to type the whole thing out.

In addition to his stressful job at a youth detention center, Schroeder works part time at a post office and has a lawn care business.
The guy is a security guard, a postal worker and mows a few lawns. And he's gonna clear high 6 figures? Why didn't I go to Upper Iowa:
Schroeder, who has a degree in sports management from Upper

Serpentine draft + H2H format = 80% luck/20% skill.

Yes, you play everyone weeks 1-9 blah blah. Still heavily weighted toward luck. Good job on the guy, but let's not pretend this format is anything more than one step above picking lottery numbers. It's the large numbers driving the grand prize, not the skill level.

I think its closer to 55%/45% luck/skill. By drafting well you minimize the bad weeks. I was the 2nd highest scorer in my money league last year yet I didn't even make the playoffs. I actually finished 11/14 because all but 2 of my loses the team I faced either set their scoring reccord for the year or their 2nd highest for the year. Now 1 season of data from 1 person doesn't make it true, but every year I see a few teams that scored really well but not make the playoffs because they hapened to face the highest scoring team that week.

12.06 - DeAngelo Williams - $$$$ just like in most leagues, SOD

And this is why i don't play high stakes leagues. One guy catches a league with a bunch of guppies and you catch a competitive league....you're done.

Yeah, but you could have been "that one guy." No skin lost, as you didn't put out to play, but then you don't have the chance to WIN either. Right?

Throw the huge vigs into the mix and it's a losing proposition.
Actually the FFOC had a large OVERLAY last year in an effort to build up their brand.

Sorry excuse - especially since you are comparing the FFOC (ten team leagues that are FFlottery) to the other very competitive deeper high stakes leagues).Hide behind that BS if you want or get in the arena and show the other players that you are the Big Dude you say you are here

ool. I would suspect that the members here provide much more competition than your average high stakes league owner. Now FFOC may be different, but the vig is too high for the luck involved to make it worth my while to invest money and time in most high stakes leagues. Now I'll agree that there's something to be said for the overall experience that needs to be factored in. That said, for me, saving that time to compete in a tri or follow my bird dog through a new covert is even a better experience.
