Fantasy Football’s 1st Millionaire

Shane Schroeder may be a lot like you as a fantasy football player. The thirty one year old has been playing FF for about ten years, mainly with friends. He has played fantasy basketball and is interested in playing fantasy baseball.
Schroeder is a Youth Corrections Officer in Fort Collins, Colorado and when a couple of the local leagues he had played in folded last August and he was just in the league he was running, he wanted another league, so he decided to look around the internet and found the FFOC.
It looked good to Shane – payouts were good, he liked the setup and he could get a discount on three teams and still only be in for a little over three hundred dollars. So he played three teams – you saw the draft for one of them in “FF – A Test in Time” – and when the smoke cleared after Week 16 of the 2008 season, Shane Schroeder, a young, single guy who loves fantasy football was $1 Million richer.
YES – I said MILLION. Schroeder was one of the fifteen finalists in the FFOC and was flown to Las Vegas will all the other finalists to hang out, meet each other, watch the games (they were all guaranteed to win something), drink beer, and swap FF stories. The contest was not actually decided until after the MNF game as there were several shifts in positions, but the bottom line for Schroeder was the top spot in the FFOC, winning a million dollars and for now at least top spot amongst all the FF players in the land.
Schroeder wanted to load up on running backs as part of his strategy, knowing that when they touch the ball enough, especially in the right offense or against the right opponents they can put up some really high scores. The FFOC in addition to 1QB, 2RB, 3WR and 1TE has a Flex player which can be any offensive player which in fact led many drafters to draft quarterbacks (too) early and often. Schroeder thought if he got two decent starting quarterbacks he would still have the option of playing one of them if the matchup was favorable in a given week or playing a third running back.
So let’s look at that draft again…….
1.05 – Joseph Addai – who knew then how bad he would be?
2.06 - Larry Johnson – there was considerable upside, just didn’t happen
[Note – even though they didn’t work out, Addai and Johnson both had a few decent games]
3.05 - Andre Johnson – good hit here
4.06 - Michael Turner – finally got his RB1
5.05 - Anquan Boldin – sensational early
6.06 - Philip Rivers – Really good pick here
7.05 – Laveranues Coles – and a not so good one but again a few good games
8.06 - Tony Gonzalez – STUD in TE leagues, especially in 2008
9.05 - Aaron Rodgers – this was a gold mine pick
10.06 – Nate Burleson – one week and OUT
11.05 – Donte Stallworth – yes, a wasted pick
12.06 - DeAngelo Williams - $$$$ just like in most leagues, SOD
13.05 - Vernon Davis – seemed like a good idea in August
14.06 - Green Bay DST – scored very well early in the season
15.05 - Jerious Norwood – some help and very good pick regardless
16.06 - Mason Crosby – solid kicker with range
17.05 - Tennessee Titans DST – excellent pick and great late in season
18.06 - Reggie Williams – have to try and some have to fail
19.05 - Kolby Smith – good backup try
20.06 - Jeff Garcia – certainly a decent backup QB
The only key free agent acquisition that Schroeder made was picking up Ted Ginn Jr. who rarely made the lineup, but made a big contribution in Week 16 when Boldin was out again.
Schroeder says “the whole experience with the FFOC was great…..I was just happy to be invited to the final weekend party. The opportunity to meet Jerry Rice was great. He is a legendary receiver and more importantly just a great person, a really nice guy at the party.”
Schroeder admits he didn’t really know what to expect in Las Vegas. Sometimes the big lights turn competitors crazy, but as he says “that was not the case at all. Every team owner from top to bottom was great and we all seemed to get along.”
Quite a thrill for Shane Schroeder and something we all fantasize about.
