"Mike told me, hey, we're a better team with you on it but wanted to know if I have a problem with an open competition," Favre said. "I don't have a problem with competing -- you know that, but Aaron should be the starter right now because he's been out here all this time. This is more than about an open competition and I can do that, absolutely, but this is going to be mass confusion and that's not good for this team.

"I'll practice my butt off, if it comes to that, and I think we all know what the end result will be, but this probably isn't going to work. And I truly understand that if I was in Mike's shoes, I'd see it basically the same way he sees it, I'm sure. And I think if he was in my shoes, he'd see it my way. I think we both agree on that.
Does anyone else read this as Favre saying he welcomes the open competition, but wont' participate in it? Because that's how I read it.Am I off base?
No, you're not off base. He wants to have it both ways - he wants to say that he's fine with an open competition, but he doesn't want to participate in it, supposedly because it's too much of a distraction to the team. I guess that means he wants to just be handed the starting job in Green Bay . . . that is, to the extent he wants to play in Green Bay at all. And of course he doesn't want to play in Green Bay - he wants to go elsewhere.
This is exactly how I read it.
I don't. It reads to me as though Favre is saying Rodgers deserves to remain the starter right now because he's been in camp and Favre has not. Should there be an open competition for the job however, Favre is confident he will prevail and he believes McCarthy knows this as well. But, Favre thinks the end result of his ultimately supplanting Rodgers a month from now will create "mass confusion" for the players and hurt the team.
Favre is running to the media every chance he gets. I think he is saying some of these things to try to make it seem like he is taking the high road.
:excited: Why this isn't more apparent to the people who are all over the team and supporting Favre is beyond me.
Because some of us believe that a 3-time MVP who just led his team to the NFC Championship Game (while playing at a high level) should be reinstated as starter automatically vs. an unproven, injury-prone QB who hasn't started a single game in the NFL, and was coached by the same guy who launched the college careers of multiple failed pro QBs.Does that sum it up?
So because you think he should just be given the job that he quit back...that means you can't see what Favre has been doing over the past few weeks?
I trust Favre to a degree. I don't trust TT. It's been clear for awhile now that he doesn't want Favre to be the starter. And before you talk about long vs short-term decision making: I completely agree with you. TT might simply think that it's in the team's long-term interest to go with Rodgers over Favre. Cool. If that's the case, he should be man enough to say that DIRECTLY to Favre, the coaches, the team, and the fans. Period.

UPDATE: Indeed, the savebrett.net website, citing a source close to Favre, said it in fact the two sides have already agreed. This is the same website that has fought hard for Favre's return to the team as the starter, and indeed was the first site to report last Friday that Favre was not considering the $20 million dollar deal to sit but would instead make his way back to Green Bay. Anyway, here's the link:

First, let's define "getting what he wants". I think what is motivating Favre is a desire to make Thompson (and likely McCarthy too) look as bad as possible. He's not liked their stewardship of the team for years, so this is his revenge. He'd like to get back onto the field and play, but he wants to accomplish that - either with the Packers or with another team - in a way that's as painful as possible to them.

So, with that in mind, here's what he's done:

1) repeatedly delayed making a retirement decision in the offseason;

2) publicly bashed Thompson for failing to resign Wahle and another OL, and for failing to sign Moss;

3) retired, then unretired and changed his mind, then re-unretired in June;

4) immediately bellyaching that Thompson and the team don't want him back;

5) leaking the now-infamous $20M bribe/marketing deal that was offered to him, to the media;

6) delaying the application for reinstatement needlessly, all while making equivocal statements in the Van Susteren interview about returning to play;

7) claiming today either that McCarthy told him he couldn't compete for the starting job, or claiming he voluntarily wouldn't compete for the starting job because he'd be a "distraction";

8) refusing to practice today.

This struggle is about perception among Packers fans and even football fans about who has made the team successful in recent years, who controls it going forward, and even who has created this retirement mess. Perhaps these tactics are best illustrated by what Favre could have done had this really been about returning to the playing field as he said it was. Here's what such a person would do:

1) announce clearly and unequivocally that you weren't ready after all to retire and you want to return;

2) apply immediately to the league for reinstatement;

3) report to camp.

That's it. That's what you do if you just want to play with no other agenda. Then, the ball is in the Packers' court, and either the Packers accept his return or they cut him or trade him. Any unfair treatment of him beyond that point is laid at the team's feet. If he didn't want to cooperate with them in a trade scenario as is his right by renegotiating his contract, he doesn't agree to renegotiate his contract and they'll probably have to cut him. So be it. Nobody would ever blame Favre for that.

This is how adults handle things. Instead, Favre has gradually escalated this mess, all the while whining about how the team doesn't really want him back.

Stop whining Brett. Force their hand by playing football.
:excited: Though..TT messed up from the start by not just getting on a plane or putting Favre on a plane and getting together to have these talks that they have had over the last 24 hours then...6 weeks ago.

Right now, I don't trust Favre either.The guy says he wants to play...that he prefers it be for GB...earlier said he welcomed a competition...even now says he is open to it...but does not want to do it and right now Rodgers should be the starter.

Does that sound like a guy who just wants to play?

He has been leaking stuff in the press non-stop the past few days...his agent supposedly was seeking possible trades back in April.

Clear for how long that TT did not want Brett starting? About a month and a half? Seems clear longer than that that Favre has not liked TT.

I think he has said it...at least in a round about way. That they have moved forward for the good of the team.

Good. Now during 2008 we can find out whether TT is a genius, or if he'll lose his job instead.As a Packer fan, I truly hope that Rodgers is the real deal. And while I don't want to see Favre get injured, it would be nice to see Tampa finish worse than the Pack.

Week 4:

GB @ TB 1:00 PM FOX

How much do you think these tickets will go for?

Or TT's. He wants to build an entire Super Bowl contender from scratch, with his players, to satisfy his ego. At least that's probably the way Favre sees it. And I don't blame him one bit.Either way, it's over and done with.

No...not assuming something could have been worked out to keep him in GB...just that it could have avoided alot of this PR mess and the he said she said and any possible lies that have come up from either of them.

Yes...to satisfy his ego...that is why he resigned several players to lucrative contracts that were not "his" guys.Please note the sarcasm.To not blame Favre a bit is a bit out there right now IMO. I just don't see how he is getting a full pass by some for this.

Do you think this mess all started because Thompson had his fantasy football draft before Favre announced he wanted to come back and Thompson picked Rogers for his QB???

ugh. good point.
Sorry if I jumped the gun, we'll have to wait for official confirmation, from jsonline: and this is another update as of 4:48 p.m., two other sources close to Favre said no trade has been finalized as of yet.

Obviously Favre deserves some blame. But c'mon sho, if the Pack won a Super Bowl we all know the story would be "Favre leads team to Super Bowl", and TT is smart enough to know that he'd get little credit. Right or wrong.It's too bad, because other than how he's handled this debacle, TT has done an excellent job as GM. He took a bloated, elderly roster that had been decimated by the poor decisions of pear-shaped Mike Sherman, and he turned it around very quickly. But his tenure will always be tainted now by the perception that he chased Favre out of town.

Bill...how many games do the Jets win with Favre? In the AFC East where they will not take the division...and there are too many teams to fill up the WC spots...I would be upset if I were a Jetsfan and they traded for him.
LMAO.....so what if they trade say a 4th rounder for him or for that matter a 3rd rounder. What football fan would be upset knowing they get to watch this guy play for their team for a season or 2. Yeah I rather watch Chad float a ball 30 yards to Coles or Cotch....LMFAO.

What are you talking about man?
It's really simple, the Jets are not going ot make the playoffs with or without Brett Favre

I'm listening to McCarthy's press conference right now, and he said that they didn't even get as far in their discussion as to whether Favre could compete for the starting job because Brett wasn't of the mindset to discuss that yet. :yucky:

I know that we don't need to try reasoning with you...Calling TT what you did...are you just having a bad day or what? This sounds like, according to McCarthy, Favre's holding too much of a grudge and isn't ready to work as part of the team. Wow.

"the train has left the station"... :cry:
That's the quote that's going to get repeated, but I'm wondering how accurately. I think McCarthy is referring to a team already working in camp and Brett needing to join them in the right mindset and get up to speed, but it sure sounds like someone saying it's too late for Favre to rejoin the team. Poor choice of words IMHO, but time will tell whether I'm right.

Question: Why isn't Brett Favre the starting quarterback of the GB Packers?

McCarthy: That's a great question, you'll have to ask Brett Favre that.

What B.S. He knew what the reporter was asking. He then goes on to say his position hasn't changed, Favre would have had to compete with Rodgers. I wonder if Ari prepared him to "answer" that question.

Reports: Bucs close to deal for Favre

TAMPA - Brett Favre will apparently be heading to Tampa Bay this season, likely finishing his legendary career as a Buccaneer.

A deal between the Bucs and the Green Bay Packers is reportedly close. Bucs general manager Bruce Allen was nowhere to be seen at training camp today, a rarity that may indicate he was working out the final details of Favre's new deal.

:cry: This whole press conference is BS. "He's not in the right place." I wonder why since the F.O. has been so open and honest in this whole fiasco.

Does Ted Thompson not deserve some benefit of the doubt, given what he's accomplished so far in his tenure?
Yes. The criticism of Ted Thompson reminds me very much of the constant criticism of AJ Smith during his first few years as Chargers GM.If you listened to the fans, everything he did was a huge mistake. Cutting David Boston, drafting-and-trading Eli Manning for three draft picks who have all been Pro Bowlers (instead of passing on Manning to draft Robert Gallery) ... nearly everything he did, he was heavily criticized for, and pretty much every time it has worked out great. People were suggesting that AJ Smith should have been fired immediately after the draft when he selected Antonio Cromartie and Marcus McNeill with the first two picks.

The common theme, though, is that people always criticized AJ Smith for stuff that hadn't played out yet. People thought he should be fired because they predicted that Cromartie wouldn't be a good player ... but they didn't wait to see who was right.

It's the same thing with Ted Thompson now. People might say that Thompson should be fired because they think Aaron Rodgers won't be as good as Brett Favre. But nobody's waiting to see who's right about that.

I would say that if you're going to criticize Thompson for something, you should wait to see how it works out before suggesting he should be fired. If it works out great, the criticism will look silly in hindsight.

I know there were some threads here in the Shark pool skewering Thompson for hiring McCarthy . . . Maybe people should have waited before being so harshly critical.

To say "My opinion differs from Thompson's, so I think he's wrong" is one thing. But to say "My opinion differs from Thompson so I think he should be fired before we wait to find out who was right" seems a bit premature.
I hear you MT but I like the debate AS the decisions are being made. I mean, let's say that Thompson trades Favre to Minnesota. And then Aaron Rodgers goes out and plays terribly. While Favre leads the Vikings to a Super Bowl.

The "I told you so" posters are kind of lame after the fact. I'd rather hear a guy take a strong stand now, before the game is played. You know what I mean?

Obviously, that means we don't truly know who is right or wrong yet. Rodgers could be the MVP this year. But it's fun to debate / discuss what we think of the GMs move and what we'd do if we were the GM. That's pretty much fantasy football.

J
Yes, I agree with all that, and I think discussing these kinds of issues is fun and worthwhile . . . I just think the issue shouldn't be discussed as if it were a foregone conclusion.What should the Packers do here? There are a number of different opinions. Some may look good in hindsight and others may look bad in hindsight. But as of right now, we don't know which are which. We can speculate. I just think a lot of people are a lot more certain about things than they ought to be.

What's the percentage chance that Favre would get more wins (or go further in the playoffs) than Rodgers this year? IMO, anyone who believes it is 99% is delusional, yet a lot of the rhetoric would suggest that 99% is on the low end. IMO, anywhere in the 40%-80% is probably reasonable. Someone who says it's 45% isn't being so ridiculous that he can be dismissed as obviously wrong before the season even starts. Let's see what happens before we pronounce the issue settled.
Both of you make great points, but I really want to zero in on what MT is talking about in the 1st sentence...if everyone would take even 30 seconds to digest the post that they decide to answer or debate with, but if everyone would take a few seconds to gather their thoughts and not just put up any ole thing in response and especially acting like they(the poster) are always right, I think this board would get to a whole new level.

McCarthy seems pissed. If what he says is true, it seems Farve wanted his ego stroked and again Green Bay wouldn't do it.

McCarthy is coming out of this press conference looking extremely classy. While some of his response are less than fully honest, he can't tell us everything he knows. He's being very respectful of Favre & his feelings about the situation. Big props to McCarthy.

:rolleyes:That's my interpretation of the tone here too. McCarthy has every reason here to keep a low profile. If this goes sideways for the team, Thompson will be the fall guy. But McCarthy is saying some pretty pointed things about Favre that he doesn't need to say. This could be a very vanilla press conference ("we met and had a very productive discussion, we're going to speak again later in the week, blah, blah, blah"), but McCarthy seemed PO'ed about the meeting.

I disagree...he said he didn't want to do the PR thing, but he is saying a lot about Brett, for not wanting to "speak for him"...

McCarthy seems pissed. If what he says is true, it seems Farve wanted his ego stroked and again Green Bay wouldn't do it.
Thx for the take, always interesting to hear other perspectives. I think MM seems frustrated by the entire situation, but he's being very non-judgmental about Favre. He's repeatedly said that he respects Favre's feelings on this topic, and continues to talk about keeping the conversation private. Interesting though.

Everything you say here is correct, but really, what would you expect? He can't come out and publicly trash the single most iconic sports figure in the city's history. Not good for the public image in the long term.

For example? Saying that he's emotional about this?
