I know it's all hindsight but I just can't understand the thinking behind selling automatics and sniper rifles to straw - buyers and then simply letting them walk the guns to Mexico as being any sort of a good idea/tactic.

I can't figure it out...how does that lead to arrests of drug cartels?  Especially if you lose track of the weapons.  We're going to be seeing these weapons turning up for decades.

Admittedly, I never followed Fast & Furious. When they are blaming the Obama administration, is this a case where the White House didn't really know what was happening or did they know and allow it?

IIRC, this was known by (if not approved by) Eric Holder, so the administration can't claim they didn't know.
