Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (16 Viewers)

Wow! It was particularly hard to pick songs from this list. “Selected” could’ve held 8 songs easily…

#20s
Recognized by title alone: 17
Sounded familiar: 4
Didn't know: 15

Selected Favorites:
Waiting Room (neal cassady)
Surrender (shuke)
Ball of Confusion (Binky)
Crazy (Don Quixote) [Props to the Postmodern Jukebox version too]

Songs I didn't know that I ended up liking:
Blind (Manster)
Dance in the Graveyards (Mrs. Rannous)
Right Next Door (worrierking)
Who’s Behind The Door (Doug B)

Lots of good stuff today, but wanted to give specific appreciation for simey’s pick of Townes Van Zandt’s If I Needed You. I included one of Townes’ songs on my last five out, but that was a bit of an after the fact “I can’t believe I left him completely out of my list.” Happy to see him on the playlist.

If you've ever read one of my posts, which no one has, you might suspect you'll see him pop up at least one more time.

Ooooooo...now I wonder if we can get Krista into the Deftones. Let's try...My Own Summer, Headup, and 7 Words.

I listened to these today, as well as checking out "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" again. Still enjoyed that one a whole lot, and "7 Words" was another winner for me. Good bass part and "groove," which is an odd word for this type of music, I suppose.

I liked the instrumentation of the other two, especially "Headup," but couldn't get into them due to the vocals. "Headup" was too much Cookie Monster, and My Own Summer was too breathy. Batting .500 on these is pretty damn good!

Most of the songs today were ones I already knew and loved. Fantastic round!

Of the new-to-me, my surprise winner was the Chris Stapleton song. What?? Given I generally hate modern country music, I had my itchy "skip" finger at the ready, but this song was amazing. Not country so much as blues or soul in the delivery, and his voice was up to the challenge of the song. Thank you for opening my eyes to something I'd not usually give any chance at all.

I also wanted to call out Pieces. I was an "old" Dinosaur Jr. fan but hadn't listened to the second iteration of the band much. This was every bit as good as the older stuff.

Also a shout-out to How Great Thou Art, which I tried to listen to but had to stop because it makes me think too much of my grandparents and my dad, which made me weepy. From the part I listened to, it was phenomenal, though. Maybe in a less stress-y time in my life I can make it through the whole thing.

Most of the stuff that’s lame about modern country music doesn’t apply to Chris Stapleton. If he were marketed as rock or Americana, not much if anything about his sound would change.

I love and can vouch for at least the guitar work in the second iteration if that's any enticement. I like their second iteration better than the first, honestly. Beyond is the album I really got into, though. I've never given Farm its due with enough listening time. I think that'll change. "Pieces" burns something fierce.

J. Mascis went from cult hero on the guitar to verifiable guitar god with his second crack at it.

Back to the discussion from before: I'd like to say that i suffered nu metal in the form of Limp Bizkit, but I never really dug it. I did listen to it, though. For sure. But that's when I started really getting into hip hop and the emo scene, actually. The Impossibles and southern rap -- Outkast and Ludacris's first album saw the inside of a CD changer often around that time. It was also around that time that I got into wordless music since the words coming out of rock and roll were so. . .well, I'll let you fill in the adjective. Mogwai and other prog/jazz/post-rock bands. Along with also System of A Down's Toxicity, mentioned before, which I never viewed as nü metal, but straight out metal.

But yeah, rock and nü metal suffered in that era.

This song sounds a lot like I'd Rather Go Blind by Etta James (could be why you like it so much).

" I had my itchy "skip" finger at the ready"

Glad you and a couple others have enjoyed this song. As mentioned earlier I don't really listen to much country but as K4 says this doesn't really sound like a typical country song. First time I heard it I thought "what was that!?". (in a good way) I particularly love the deep guitar at 1:36, the high note at 2:09 and the guitar solo at 2:59.

If you want to have that "what is that?" feeling, check out the original George Jones version. I'll just say it wouldn't be in my top 31.

ANNOUNCE!!!111 NEW!!!111

Each list I post moving forward will indicate one of three possibilities in a parenthetical after the song/artist name:

  • “new artist” means this artist has not previously received votes for any song
  • “new song” means this artist has previously received votes, but not for this song
  • “duplicate” means that the artist and song have previously received votes, and I will indicate how many total votes the song has now received including this vote

Number 17:

scorchy:

Freak Scene – Dinosaur Jr.
(new artist, but being doubled-up today)

neal cassady:

Lover, You Should’ve Come Over - Jeff Buckley
(new artist)

Dr. Octopus:

The Underdog – Spoon
(new artist)

worrierking:

Radio Free Europe – R.E.M.
(new song)

Eephus:

Intro / Sweet Jane (Live version) - Lou Reed
(new artist)
Yep. Another great playlist, but this would be my top 5 known-to-me songs.

If you like Chris Stapleton check out some of his work with The Steeldrivers.

"I listen to both kinds of music.....country, and western."

On a serious note, to me, country is either blue grass, or outlaw country.....the new pop, country crap is a joke. My current favorite "country" act is The Dead South, which wouldve been repped on here, by me, if they were not Canucks!......which is odd given their name, and song content. They are very entertaining, and I would love to see em live some day.

Haven't listened to Mogwai in a bit, but I used to drift away on phones back in the day.

Tomorrow we will have:
- 22 new artists, including one that has the sole double-up of the round
- 12 new songs by artists previously selected
- only two duplicates of previously selected songs, each getting its second vote so far

Tomorrow is our halfway point and is my favorite day of the countdown, because it's the only time I can just look at the middle of everyone's lists and not worry about whether they listed their selections 1-31 or 31-1!

The results tomorrow are going to be quite different from today's:
- only 10 new artists!
- 15 new songs by artists previously selected
- 11 songs with previous votes, including a song that will receive its third vote and one that will receive its fourth(!)
- no double-ups or Deja Votes
- the return of Tom Petty

I never thought of it that way, but now that you mention it, it really does.

Love Will Keep Us Together - Captain & Tennille
(new artist)

As I said when Chap picked this in Doc Oc's exercise, this is an incredible pop song, regardless of what you think of the trappings. I've always found it amusing that The Captain sneaks in some Keith Emerson-like synth bursts in the middle.

Wilco covered this when I saw them on New Year's Eve at MSG in 2004 into 2005 (with the Flaming Lips and Sleater-Kinney). After the ball dropped, they played this sequence:

11. Auld Lang Syne
12. Happy Birthday (to Glenn Kotche)
13. Livin' After Midnight
14. Love Will Keep Us Together
15. Political Science
16. I Shall Be Released
17. Something In The Air

After which Jeff Tweedy said: "Congrats, you just paid fifty bucks to see a cover band!"

New-to-me favorites from today:

Pieces -- Dinosaur Jr. (KarmaPolice). My history with Dino Jr. is odd. I discovered them in college and really enjoyed their early '90s albums. Their '80s work, while boasting some very impressive guitar, was a little too shambolic for my tastes. Then I lost track of them when I went into my Phish wormhole in the late '90s. And I have not listened to their work after they reformed in the mid-00s, which coincided with the end of my Lost Years and the start of my not paying much attention to new music. This song is stunning. J Mascis' guitar work is as spectacular as ever, but the way the song is put together is much more in my wheelhouse. More directness, more clarity, less slacking. And while Mascis will never be a conventionally "good" singer, the rough edges of his voice are sanded down here, which makes for a better listening experience.
If I Needed You -- Townes Van Zandt (Simey). He's a blind spot for me, as I have mentioned in Doc Oc's exercise and various Tim threads. This is sublime.
Burning -- King Buffalo (Manster). Once again Manster unearths heavy/psych rock that is totally up my alley.
Black Smoke Rising -- Greta Van Fleet (Hawks64). Heart/Concrete Blonde fusion with some Chris Cornell-isms thrown in. Me likey.

Snail Mail is one guess.

Most of the stuff that’s lame about modern country music doesn’t apply to Chris Stapleton
There’s a list of modern country artists that I love that aren’t in the same universe of what gets played on country hit radio or that gets recognition at the CMAs. Some of it gets labeled Americana or Alt-Country, but it’s actually much more roots country music as opposed to the country hits which are basically pop/hip hop with a twang and/or over the top Patriotic crap.

I just realized a song I left off that makes me angry. @krista4 - we need to start over.

I will end you.

:lmao:

I haven't said it yet but thanks for all the hard work in here - it's been such a great thread.

As for the song(s) I missed - I'm making a list and will wait to see if any show up before we are done and share later if they don't.

Mine is totally skewed since I stopped using Spotify in the car, so the list is very small compared to previous years. Add in I listened to a ton of a specific artist in the lead-up to his show last spring and totally skewed now :lmao:
Not going to share until this countdown is over since my top artists and songs are a bit spoilery.
