Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (1 Viewer)

Spoiler Alert!

There is something wrong with me. I woke up with this in my head. I haven't watched that show in over 40 years and have no idea why the theme song pinged my brain today. I'm sure the show was written by a bunch of 60-ish Jewish guys, but it played like it was on acid.

Watch it get the most points in the Krista Scoring System
Zsa Zsa is ineligible.
It was Eva
Oh, well her also.

I was thinking of doing some little teasers/guessing games. There are no prizes. I'd say just for fun, but maybe it's only fun for me? Nothing spoiler-y. and I wouldn't give the answers out at this time, but stuff like:

Which of the following grunge superstars received the most points: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, or Soundgarden?
Which song about September received more points: "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire, or "September Gurls" by Big Star?

I mean, I guess there are minor spoilers there in that you see that each got some points, but I don't think those are surprises.

What do you guys think?

Excellent work, everyone! The above are the only people who indicated interest but from whom I don't have lists yet. Mine is done except for playing around with the bottom five or so. And OH is out of town, coming back in tonight, and has been informed that he doesn't get a ride home from the airport unless he gives me his list first. I know Bluesbomber was working on his yesterday and sent me some bands for vetting. Hopefully the other four are still in, too! If you want to be in but are struggling with the deadline, let me know.

And everybody needs to remember, if you haven't sent in your guesses for the one guessing game were doing that actually DOES have prizes, you need to do so before Krista starts giving out the lists!! Just IM me with your picks for "Most Popular Song" and "Most Popular Artist". and your favorite charity might be getting a nice donation! C'mon, people, I only have 10 lists so far, it's not that hard to do!

Can I enter???

(C'mon, folks. It's free and could lead to $$$ for your charity. We won't make fun of wrong guesses...much.)

Done, thanks

And by the way on these, obviously there's a current correct answer, but it could change with the last several lists. (I can testify that neither my nor OH's list will change the grunge answer, though.)

More Nirvana, more Earth Wind and Fire. I feel sort of confident in my answers.

ETA: but not that confident either.

Hey @Val Rannous , how does the scoring for that contest work? Are we giving separate prizes for winning song vs. winning artist, or are they added together somehow?

Well, here's what is planned currently:

Each person enters a guess for "Most Popular Song" and "Most Popular Artist". Each selection will get points based on how many points that entry gets on the main list - so, if "Fire, Inc." gets selected 31st on one list and 28th on another (those being the total appearances), that selection is worth 1+4=5 points. Add the points from your two selections together, and that's your score in the contest. High score gets the donation. In the possible case of somebody turning in an exact matching set of picks with another person's guesses (which has happened already!!), I've asked those people to select a second song selection as a tiebreak - the more popular second song will get a half a point to break the tie.

We really couldn't do 2 separate contests, as our selections for top artist don't, well, have a lot of variety yet. A lot of people apparently think top artist is going to come down to one of 3 people. Actually, half of our guesses so far think it's going to be one specific person. "Most Popular song", on the other hand is wide open - in 11 guesses we only have 1 duplication.

If anybody was confused as to how this was going to work and wants to update their selections, go ahead. Selections are open up until Krista posts everyone's main 31st selection.

Great! And interesting... Care to share via PM what some of the guesses are (you can keep it anonymous as to who guessed what)?

On November 14, I’ll begin by revealing everyone’s #31, with a reveal every day until we hit all of our #1s on December 14.

Even if one only read the first post in the thread, I thought the above would make it clear, unless I was going to rank them for all of you? No problem. Stevie wins!
I had a fundamental misunderstanding of this thread. I thought you were tallying the songs into some kind of combined list to get a consensus top 31. Which makes no sense given how many random songs would receive votes but that is what I thought this was.
If it were the case my list would have zero songs in the top 31

Which "summer" song has garnered the most points:

Summer Babe (Winter Version) – Pavement
Summertime - Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald version only, without regard to any other versions that might have been selected

 It's not too late to add them!

Don’t you hate the Eagles, or am I mixing you up with one of Uruk’s hates?

I don't hate their music (except for The Long Run - that whole album is a joyless slog), just their surliness and whining about not being respected enough.

I think Pearl Jam will have the most individual songs submitted, but Nirvana may have the highest point-getter. I like Soundgarden better than both. I realize I haven't actually answered the question and don't intend to.

I'm guessing Big Star for our end-of-summer clash.

Don't know why I just used an exclamation point twice. Sorry.

Unpopular opinion - I enjoy STP and Alice in Chains much more than Soundgarden.

Agree with my fellow Marylander here. I feel like most of the huge PJ fanboys aren't on the board anymore and the few who are didn't participate. So they'll get more songs but the high rankings belong to Nirvana.

What about The Rain by Oran "Juice" Jones? Or maybe I'm mixing up my music threads.

Me, too, but they weren't one of the three listed. STP, AIC, and Soundgarden are - to me - miles more enjoyable than PJ (can not STAND Vedder's voice) and Nirvana (one-trick pony).
