Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (4 Viewers)

Top from Number 25:

simey: I'd Rather Go Blind – Etta James
- Sooo good, Added to my Whiskey Sippin' mix

shuke: You Get What You Give - New Radicals -
I know I shouted it out earlier, but just such a pop masterpiece.

Mrs. Rannous: Obvious Child - Paul SImon - percussion!

Pip’s Invitation: Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine - James Brown - 1234

Dr. Octopus: Listen to Her Heart – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Anything Tom

I swear I was just watching Big Lebowski last night drunk and this song/this scene gets me everytime.

ditkaburgers: Fantastic Voyage - Coolio - RIP, added to my Groove Mix.

The Dreaded Marco: Good Times Roll - The Cars -
Went with another Cars song, but this was #3

New2Me:

Eephus: Shake Some Action - Flamin' Groovies
- in the 5-Out mix, but still newish to me and still sweet.

krista4: Roadrunner – The Modern Lovers -
Feel like I've heard this before? Maybe Krista4 drafted it in another draft?

Doug B: You - The Cold -
Never heard of the group or song but liked it.

They are from the East Bay in No Cal.

Oh yeah, they are. Just more suburban raised, I think, rather than true East Bay stuff. That was always the impression I got. They weren't city kids.

Listen to me. Like I'd know the East Bay from Old Bay Seasoning. Carry on. It's no big deal.
You do realize he's quoting the best Green Day song, yes? Not my favorite, which is why I didn't rank it, but best? By two thousand light years.

Going with "Here Comes a Regular" as my favorite from today. Special shout-out as well to "Danny's Song." I was sure I knew this but couldn't remember anything about it, until I pulled it up on YouTube to find a link. Immediately remembered the song and ended up listening all the way through (usually when I'm searching for links I just copy one and move on). What a beautiful song. I'll bet MAC has a story behind this one.

Tons today that I don't know.
It was about 4 years ago, just before covid. My wife and I had been struggling for years to provide the sort of memories for our kids we want to provide them. We made some difficult choices that would hopeful benefit future us, but required sacrifices out of current us. A lot less cash now for hopefully enough later for all of us to live the life we want to live. Then this re-entered my orbit immediately before a 5 day long weekend road trip to PA - 2 days at a lake house my wife grew up with and another 2 days in Pittsburgh. So i slid it within the mix about an hour en route to see if it would stick. By the time it came around for the 3rd time...

Even though we ain't got money
I'm so in love with you honey...

That chorus sang loud and proud thoughout the caravan. And has turned into a weekend staple in our house ever since. Now my heart fills every time that opening bar rolls through 'reminding me I'm a lucky one.'

Tear Stained Eye – Son Volt
A lot to catch up on today - still coming down from the Eagles nail-biter by listening to the post-game on Audacy.

Every time I play this song it reminds me of Beckster* - it is/was her favorite song and she ended our first mix-CD exchange with it. Thanks to her bringing a bunch of us FFA misfits into a spin-off FF league in the late 90s, I ended up meeting a bunch of my closest friends in the the world, including my BFF @plinko (or JZilla as he's better known). I was visiting Baltimore for work (when I lived in Philly) and she somehow convinced the two of us introverted strangers to meet up and watch the Eagles on Monday Night Football at Max's in Fells Point. Beckster* is living her best life far from the FFA at this point, but her legacy lives on in the many friendships she helped create. Tear Stained Eye was a shoo-in for my list because of her.

Jesus of Suburbia- the third of five stanzas if I remember right.

I'd stopped listening to them by then, which is probably the opposite of a lot of people.
It was.. different. Good different, but jarring for those that knew them prior. It's why I didn't choose one from this album despite it being their musical peak. My choice wasn't either of today's though. I actually don't like Basket Case and never have :ducks:

Holy balls - good thing I clicked on that spoiler in the OP, as that would have wiped out about 1/3 my mental list. I guess I am a dum-dum about knowing where people in bands are from.

Not sure I understand some of the rulings on the albums too, but it's all birthplace? E.g. I just looked up Slash's wiki and saw he was born in England.

@krista4 - if I get motivated, can I submit a top 20?

Sure, I'll take a top 20 from you if you can get it over in the next few days (say, end of Wednesday?). I found when another top 31 came in a day late that it is a gigantic PITA to add the data, because of how many different ways I've tabulated everything. But your late arrival is through no fault of your own! And you are always such a big part of music threads that of course we'd want you in here.

Also, and I mean this with all the love, you people are a bit nuts.

Digging through some of my favorite bands/songs and can't get confirmation on birthplace. Grumbling that Soundgarden got crossed off.

And by the way, the rule of thumb is, if after a reasonable amount of digging, we can't determine provenance, that is in favor of having the band included not excluded. There are plenty of more obscure bands in the countdown where the information does not seem to be available.

If it makes it easier on you Soundgarden wasn't Cornell's peak...

You missed some interesting questions about the qualification of people born in Puerto Rico or overseas military bases. Good times.

Oh, I forgot to mention, @KarmaPolice , if you submit a list please present the list with song title first, then artist. And preferably a link, though if you don't send them you'll be in the vast majority, so it's OK. And preferably with your top choice (31 points) at the top, since 32 of 25 people did it that way, and I'm at risk of messing up the rankings of the three who didn't, but again if it doesn't come in that way, it's OK. :)

 Soundgarden is eligible.
Bassist was born in Okinawa I read.
On a US military base. So he's eligible.
Got it. I will add them back on and narrow down.

I'm gonna stick with my statement that this was my least favorite round so far. :( I listened to the many songs I wasn't familiar with and, unlike yesterday, didn't find much I'd seek out again.

Favorite new-to-mes were the Etta James and Son Volt songs (though I didn't like the latter quite as much as the one posted yesterday). The Mark Lanegan was good, and I enjoyed the Eric Johnson song a lot once it got going. Biggest surprise was that I found the Garth Brooks song not terrible. I made it through about three minutes of it, which is 2:50 longer than I listened to one of the Kenny Chesney songs.

Favorite new-to-me songs from today:

I'm a King Bee -- The Stone Foxes (Hawks64) -- I know the song but not this version. Heavy and freaky, very enjoyable.
Fantastic Voyage -- Coolio (Ditkaburgers) -- Slammin'.
(I'm Gonna) Write Me a Letter -- The Bassholes (OH) -- Also heavy, freaky and enjoyable.
Red Eyes -- The War on Drugs (Worrierking) -- Despite being from the Philly area, I am not too familiar with TWOD. They emerged after I stopped paying close attention to the music scene(s). This sounds like their other material I have heard, which is like a more aggressive version of the bumper music for the HBO promos of the early '00s (this is a compliment in my mind.) They are one of the few post-grunge rock bands whose songs sound like they are made for stadiums -- Coldplay and Muse are the others that come to mind.

A couple questions. :scared:

1. How have you been handling duplicates?
2. How anal have you been about the "and the" type bands. E.g. the band KarmaPolice and the Movie Geeks need to have all of the Movie Geeks vetted?

There are pretty much no restrictions on what you can pick as long as the artist/band is American.

In your example, all the Movie Geeks need to be vetted. For material from a KarmaPolice solo album, only KarmaPolice needs to be vetted.

And to be absolutely clear, "the Movie Geeks" are members of the band, not session musicians. Session musicians don't have to be vetted.

Not so many teasers tonight. Either I'm tired or there's not much to report for tomorrow, or both.

We have our first triple-up! One artist will have three songs listed. That artist is also going to hit a total of five different songs named so far, tying another artist that will also hit that number tomorrow.

We also have the first appearance of a big mover-and-shaker in the rankings.

And we continue the Son Volt vs. Wilco battle for the heart of Uncle Tupelo fans.

As I did with Doc Oc's gang of idiots, I am ranking everybody's rankings (except mine) -- I have a list of every song revealed so far (minus the ones on my list) in the order of how much I like them. Since we're now at #25, I'll provide a glimpse of who might have the most similar tastes to me so far. I'll do this every time we hit a number that ends in 0 or 5.

Songs by participant that are on my list or in the top 10 of songs not on my list:
Hov34: 3
DrIanMalcolm: 2
AAABatteries: 1
Chaz: 1
Falguy: 1
Krista4: 1
MAC 32: 1
Marco: 1
Neal Cassady: 1

I'm watching the RnR HOF replay on HBO right now. Good stuff in general, but it's really weird to hear Lionel Ritchie still pulling out the Jamaican accent when singing All Night Long. Is that cultural appropriation? Are Shabba Ranks and Shaggy gonna be pissed?

The Known

Gold: Kentucky Rain (uruk-hai)
Silver: Get Up (pip)
Bronze: Listen To Her Heart (Dr. O)

The Unknown

Gold: I'm A King Bee (Hawks)
Silver: I'd Rather Go Blind (simey)
Bronze: The Way I Am (simsarge)

Oooooops, not true regarding the triple-up. It's only a double. :bag: But someone else does hit five songs.

OK, instead I'll offer this: we have at least 10 songs or artists with a food-related name. And a city that's a food capital of the world.

Also, I read it more as 'greatest' vs. favorites at first and was more stressed. Switched to a quick off the cuff list of songs heavy in the KP rotation instead.

Yes, definitely these are personal favorites, not "greatest."
Also, @krista4 when you requested a link, do you mean for each song in the PM or a list to a spotify playlist? I assumed in the pm for each song, but wanted to check.
It's easier for me to maneuver if you send separate links to each, but if you'd rather do a playlist, I've worked through a couple of those.
