Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (2 Viewers)

Pip’s Invitation:

When My Baby's Beside Me - Big Star

This song defines power pop for me. It’s intensely melodic and works up a ton of momentum. And there are little touches throughout that reveal themselves with each listen.

It also sounds a bit like something Todd Rundgren might have written. Which means a lot to me and Binky if not anyone else.
I liked this one, man. Didn't know it beforehand.

Favorite Top Five from round #20:

Brokedown Palace
Surrender
Crazy
When My Baby's Beside Me
Folsom Prison Blues
Don't Think Twice, It's All Right

Those are six, but one is on my list. There are other songs in round #20 that could take the place of some of the above.

Use Me is a repeat favorite

Favorite new to me song(s)

Weird Ways
Walkin' Shoes
Waiting Room - Fugazi reminds me of Bonzai

The Dreaded Marco:

Sad Professor - R.E.M.

This one skipped by me a long time ago; it's of course really lyrically strong as many REM songs are. I could have easily put 3-4 from these guys in my list.
I'm not too familiar with post-1996 R.E.M. and haven't listened to this one a whole lot. There is another ballad from the same album that I think is one of their very best songs.

I participated in an 11-person R.E.M. song draft on another board and this song didn't go until the next-to-last (11th) round. By contrast, the other songs that have shown up here so far:

Fall on Me 1.04
Everybody Hurts 1.07
Nightswimming 1.08
Begin the Begin 3.03

The last REM album I listened to extensively was New Adventures in Hi-Fi, which is pretty solid top-to-bottom.

As others have said, this is a very good example of disco.

She appeared at Philly's Thanksgiving Day Parade yesterday and performed this. Also appearing were The Spinners and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. I was not aware they still exist in some form.
Thelma Houston did a cool version of Comfortably Numb on a British Rock Symphony album back in the late 90s. The drummer on the song is Ringo's son Zak Starkey.

DrIanMalcolm advised me in the later rounds because he knows their catalog better than I do.

(From yesterday):

We have four (4!) double-up battles (same band, two different songs):

- one double-up of an artist that has had two prior selections, one of which will make its second appearance (Boston – More Than a Feeling and Hitch a Ride; the former and Foreplay/Long Time previously selected)
- one double-up of an artist that has had two prior selections, one of which will make its second appearance (Blue Oyster Cult – (Don’t Fear) The Reaper and Take Me Away; the former and Veteran of the Psychic Wars previously selected)
- one double-up of a grunge band - Pearl Jam, Nirvana, or Soundgarden? (Pearl Jam – Alive and Rearviewmirror)
- one "partial" double-up of an artist that is "featured" on one of tomorrow's selections and has another song that will receive its second vote tomorrow (Aerosmith – Dream On and feat. on Run D.M.C.’s Walk This Way)

And we have an exciting Deja Vote (same song, same artist) from one of our collective top 10 artists (Prince – Let’s Go Crazy)

I don't want to say too much and possibly spoil anything, but 1.02 seems like a reach, and there are a couple of SODs in the second round.

There's a certain segment of REM fans that totally revere 1.02. Lucky picked it because he didn't think it would make it back to him, and others told him he was right.

I had quite the dilemma when I got to round two and these were available, and the other two went right after I made my choice.

Pip’s Invitation:

Heliotropic - Failure

I have written a ton about Failure and their 1996 album Fantastic Planet in music threads in recent years. Here is what I said in the Pick a Pair/Half Decade draft:

Fantastic Planet is one of my favorite albums of all time. I couldn't decide whether to pair it with its immediate predecessor or immediate successor, but the bonus round solved that problem.

Failure started as an alt-rock power trio. Their first album, Comfort (1992), was standard grunge-era fare, down to the Steve Albini production. Then their drummer quit, and songwriters Ken Andrews and Greg Edwards (who shared guitar, bass and keys; Andrews handled most of the singing) had to reinvent themselves out of necessity.

Magnified, the second album, presents a completely different-sounding band. With no permanent drummer (Edwards handled the drumming on most tracks), the single-take approach of Comfort wasn't possible, so Andrews and Edwards took the opportunity to develop a more layered, intricate sound. Each track of Magnified has a ton of interesting stuff going and you can discover something different with each listen.

It was here where they got on my radar. I saw them open for Tool on Valentine's Day 1994 and was very impressed. By this point, they had a new drummer, Kelli Scott, who has been with them ever since, and had built themselves into a lean but not one-dimensional live outfit. I found Magnified and Comfort in record stores soon thereafter, and eagerly awaited their next output.

Two years later, Fantastic Planet was issued, and its impact on me was immediate. They had basically invented grunge-prog fusion. I was blown away and played the album constantly. But there was no sign that the rest of the world knew what had happened. There wasn't much evidence of the album's brilliance on the song released to modern rock radio, Stuck on You, and I don't recall a whole lot of buzz, at least in NJ. I passed on seeing them live because I had just gotten married for the first time and had other things going on, and they were touring with Local H, whom I didn't care for. I figured I would get them next time.

Turned out that would be awhile. One of the standout features of Fantastic Planet is the spaced-out, far-out lyrics, mostly written by Edwards. Turned out that Edwards was a raging heroin addict and many of his lyrics referred to/were inspired by his highs. Him being in that state caused a lot of problems, as you might imagine, and by 1997 Andrews had had enough and the band broke up.

By the early '00s, I began to find other people on the internet who held Fantastic Planet in as high esteem as I did. Turns out the album had a cult following after all, which got bigger when one of its songs, The Nurse Who Loved Me, was covered by A Perfect Circle.

Flash forward to 2013. Andrews had spent most of the interim as a producer, with occasional forays into making his own music, while Edwards and Scott had been involved with various bands. Andrews and Edwards began corresponding again and realized that, thanks to becoming fathers around the same time, they once again had a lot in common. So they decided to try working together again with Scott.

I saw them on their 2014 reunion tour, on which they played most of Fantastic Planet, and during my show (and presumably the other ones), they announced that a new album was forthcoming. When The Heart Is a Monster arrived a year later, it was as if nothing had changed. As might be expected, there are fewer grunge-related elements, but it sounds about what you'd expect a Fantastic Planet follow-up would have sounded like if they'd never broken up. The arrangements are just as stunning as those on Magnified and Fantastic Planet.

I missed the 2016 Fantastic Planet anniversary tour (all the Northeast dates happened when I was on a cruise) but saw them again in 2019 when they were touring for The Heart Is a Monster's successor, In the Future Your Body Will Be the Furthest Thing From Your Mind. A sixth album, Wild Type Droid, came out in early 2022.
Fantastic Planet is a monstrous record, especially if you like loud, sonically adventurous music, and my current favorite from it is its penultimate track Heliotropic, which is just thunderous. It conveys the epic scope of the best '70s hard rock, while making great use of contemporary atmospherics and synth sounds. Of all the warhorses they have in their arsenal, they chose this to close their regular set both times I saw them after they got back together.

On-time playlist

I hope @Hawks64 is doing all right. We are so spoiled by his making these playlists, so I am not at all complaining that we don't have one, but instead genuinely concerned. Last week when he knew he wouldn't be around one day, he asked for the songs so he could do the playlist in advance. And yesterday when I needed playlist corrections, he apologized because it took him like 30 minutes to respond.
Thanks for the concern, I wasn't planning on going MIA and yesterday totally got away from me, stupid cooking.

In other double-up news, I doubled up Getz/Zegras's "We Got The Beat" pick. Of all the Go-Go's songs, you could probably get me to pick about one of four or five songs on any different day. I chose this one, and it garnered some points from both Zegras and I.

Hey Zegras, guess you've heard of one on my list!

Fever - Little Willie John
Little Willie John lived a short and sad life. He died, music career washed up years before, in prison at the age of 30. He's pretty much all but forgotten these days, which is a shame. Seriously, go look up his music if you want to hear something completely unique.

In his prime he was as distinctive and fine a vocalist as rock & roll had in the 1950s. His default mode was "abject misery". It's interesting with all of the R.E.M. talk on this page today, because the modern singer who sounds most like Willie to me is Michael Stipe - even though they have almost nothing in common.

"Fever" is the happiest Willie John song you can find, but even it sounds like he's ready to dive off of a bridge because he knows it isn't going to end well (as opposed to the usual "I wish I had cancer and could cut myself all day while every hungry animal on Earth starves" vibe of everything else he ever recorded). It's also one of the sexiest (though dangerous) records ever made - those damned finger snaps and downbeat horns seem to be hollering "enjoy this, boy......hope you survive it".

I'm too lazy to look it up, but my feeble memory tells me the great Otis Blackwell wrote this one. It sold by the ton, though Peggy Lee's cover sold even more - in some ways, it hits harder being sung by a woman............. though Peggy torches it up while Willie makes it sound like a drug addiction.

Little Willie was a Detroit guy and apparently quite a hot head whose temper and drinking problem ruined what could have been a big career. James Brown often opened for him and considered Little Willie a huge inspiration on his music and performance.

The 1960s would have been set up nicely for him.

I'm a fan of his sister Mable, especially her music with Stax.
