Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (3 Viewers)

Can we all just agree that Surrender by Cheap Trick is a great fricken song?

Speaking of which, looks like potentially a two-song race for the "one-hit wonder" title. After the #5s:

Surrender - Cheap Trick - 89 points
Let's Stay Together - Rev. Al Green - 76 points

Next ones are at 47 points.
American Pie, Don Mclean 54?

This is why you got that recent promotion and hefty 100% bump in your salary!

Welp, there goes my Elvis, Dylan, Smokey and Moon. I was hoping to have 10 non-dupes to share, but lowering expectations. Stunned by a few yet to be taken. My Petty surviving this late makes me think it will be mine alone, and he scores yet another new one.

I always have a big grin when Jimmy Buffett or the Eagles show. They both get eye-rolls but both have plenty of deserving songs. Like Yankee, I used to sing Come Monday all the time. I think I'll karaoke it at the kid's bar this Thursday.

Speaking of which, she bartends at the 2nd busiest bar in town. It was 5th or 6th when she and her best friend took over. Finished a double major and this is her career. Now my eyes are rolling, but she loves it, is very happy, and rarely drinks, so who knows. She wants her own bar now. Oh, where was I? My adled brain. Ah, she's been hearing these playlists coming out of my office and asked me about all the new music I've been listening to. I explained and told her I was importing the playlists from Spotty to Youtube Music if she hadn't noticed. We share the service. She played your #10s there last night and said it was a big hit. I told her that's because her patrons are all middle-aged dummies. She said she's gonna play them all. Calls it day time music. :)

working on the spreadsheet updates. Might take a bit longer I have to change the loading process. Got a new computer for work and it's a MAC and things work a bit differently. Have a few kinks to iron out. I may have to enter the songs/artists myself rather than let excel just load them from a file. Anyway, nobody cares about that, I'm sure. I just wasted 2 minutes typing this, could have entered 3 picks already.

This is totally unimportant but it's driving my OCD crazy. On the tab "Who picked each song" the song "September" shows up first even though the list is alphabetized. What gives?

I'll now return to flipping my light switch on an off 10 times before I leave the room.*

*I don't really do this and apologies if there's anyone in here who truly does suffer from OCD
I KNOW! It has driven me nuts for a while now. I can't figure it out. I mean, if I sort on song title, Surrender comes where it's supposed to, but when I run the excel analytic tool to group songs and list the FBG for each it comes at the top. If the was an odd character in the title it would affect the regular sort order too. Sorry, as of now I'm baffled but continue to look at this one.

Pip’s Invitation:

Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
I don't care all that much for Dylan's records. I could make a listenable-for-me Greatest Hits package. The rest of his stuff could go into the Jackson Browne Bin for all I care.

THIS one, though, kills it. It's the closest he ever got to writing a Chuck Berry record.
My listenable Bob Dylan is one song long...and it was #14 for me in this exercise. I've tried many times before to integrate more from his catalog (i.e. the last month), but every time I try I hit skip before the halfway point. We'll see what happens this afternoon!
I love Like A Rolling Stone. Bob going electric is electrifying. I love the lyrics, and that intro of the bang on the snare drum to kickoff that awesome Hammond organ along with the guitars and tambourine. Bliss.

Moving to top 7 for the final 5 rounds, since I don't want to cut any of these. 😬

My top 7 from round 5 excluding my own choice:
Another great round!

Just Win Baby:

In the End (2001), from Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park

I'm not too surprised that I'm the only one who has named a Linkin Park song, since, after all, this is "according to a bunch of middle-aged dummies."

They are one of my all-time top 5 artists, and I could have chosen many songs to represent them, but this is the one that first caught my attention and turned me on to them. I also included a song by Mike Shinoda, a member of the band. Highly recommend sampling some of their stuff if you aren't familiar.

Spreadsheet updates complete .
@AAABatteries I moved September manually to it's rightful location. It's been bugging me too. Funny thing, the preview excel gives me of the data it's going to generate does not have this song at the top. But when I insert the pivot table it puts it there. I'm no excel expert, just a junior intern, and simply using the Analyze data tool it provides. Baffling.

Unfortunately I'll have to do it 4 more times since the entire list is regenerated each time. No big deal just move 4 rows.

This is an exceptional song. Waiting For The End is another I really like. When I ran scoreboard and music for my son's hockey team I liked to play When They Come for Me as they came onto the ice and during pregame warmup. It's great to get the blood flowing.

Yup... wait... WHERE ARE MY KISS RECORDS?
I'd like to see your thoughts on your choice this round.

I really, really like One Nation Under a Groove. I tend to like songs that have a lot of "stuff" going on in general, and this one does (although you could say that about a lot of P-Funk). I like how it starts (almost sounding like it starts in the middle of the song), I like the different bridges/choruses - it's like the song really keeps you off balance. It's always welcome when it comes on my playlist.

It's funny though - this is from the P-Funk period where the line between the two was really blurred. As a whole, I prefer the Maggot Brain Funkadelic a little more, as it was distinct. But there's no one song that stands out as much as this one does to me (nor is as much fun - my wife cracks up every time the "feet don't fail me now" comes up) .

Like a Rolling Stone.

Dr. O has been looking through some artists for the British Isles exercise, and while I'm aware that we don't want to muck up this thread too much, I wanted to share the following ruling (if I run the countdown).

In this countdown we deemed an artist eligible if they were eligible to run for President (setting aside age requirements). For instance, an artist born outside the country to US parents was eligible. I am not going to get into the ins and outs of the requirements to be Prime Minister of England or President of Ireland or whatever, Instead, we'll use the same general rules we did here, and if a person was born outside the British Isles to citizens of a British Island nation, then they are eligible.

For example, Nick Drake was born in Burma to English parents (his dad was English and his mom was naturalized Burmese-English): eligible. The Cure drummer Boris Peter Bransby Williams was born in France to English parents: eligible. Stewart Copeland was born in Virginia to one Scottish parent and one American parent: ineligible.

If anyone is researching artists and comes across some unexpected ineligibles, please PM them to me. Once we start the new thread, I'll keep a list in there as we did in this thread.

One addition to this: we're going to go as close to "natural-born citizenship" as we can on this, but I've been reading some of the citizenship rules for the UK (have not looked at Ireland) and it is insanely complex. I'll set this out in more detail when we get a new thread going, but in addition to above, we can consider the following rules:
- Born in a British colony to non-British parents does not make you ineligible. Very basic rule is that those born before 1983 in a colony are automatically citizens of the UK, with tons of qualifications and exceptions. I don't have time or desire to look into the other qualifications, so we'll just go with the general rule that born in colony is OK.
- Born in a British protectorate to non-British parents does make you ineligible, since that only makes you a British national, not a British citizen. Mrs. R is already aware that this disqualifies Queen (Freddie Mercury born in Zanzibar to Indian parents). We'll catch them in the "everyone else" countdown.

Don Quixote:

The Tracks of My Tears - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
(duplicate – third vote)

This song has made a couple of appearances so far. I don't have anything to say outside the obvious; so, I'll just let Smokey's words do it. Break-ups/heartbreaks a well-worn song topic before and after, but Smokey's songwriting just unparalleled here....

People say I'm the life of the party
'Cause I tell a joke or two
Although I might be laughing loud and hearty
Deep inside I'm blue
So take a good look at my face
You'll see my smile looks out of place
If you look closer, it's easy to trace
The tracks of my tears

I need you (need you), need you (need you)

Since you left me if you see me with another girl
Seeming like I'm having fun
Although she may be cute
She's just a substitute
Because you're the permanent one
So take a good look at my face
Oh, you'll see my smile looks out of place
If you look a little bit closer, it's easy to trace
Oh, the tracks of my tears...

Question -- if an artist, whose name is on the record as a solo artist, is good for the UK qualification BUT a musician that played on the album is not.... does this make this solo artist record ineligible?

Follow-up question -- if an album from a defined band is from the UK but a single one of the musicians is not, does this make this band's record ineligible?

TIA

Good God, y’all

1. No
2. Yes assuming the musician is an official member of the band

A few favorites from round #5 not including repeat favorites:

Here Comes My Girl
Come Monday
Rock Me on the Water
A Long Time Ago
The Dylan Songs
Suspicious Minds
One Nation Under A Groove
I Cover the Waterfront
Dancing in the Street

Favorite new to me songs:

Your Little Hoodrat Friend
Heart Cooks Brain
The Seven Rays
Don't Back Down

Manster:

Heart Cooks Brain - Modest Mouse

Great song off a phenomenal album. One of my favorites of the entire 90s.

Val Rannous:

Frankenstein - Edgar Winter

One of my dogs kind-of resembles Edgar Winter.

ditkaburgers:

Blow The Whistle - Too Short

Holy #### I love this. Back in the mid-80s, I bought Too Short's records because I was a teenage boy and I loved the profanity. I've probably not heard anything he released post 1992. Blow The Whistle absolutely slays.

Doug B:

Private Dancer - Tina Turner

Speaking of the mid-80s, I don't think I've thought of Private Dancer since then. I kind of like it, but it also felt like it was written by a dude trying to give a stripper's perspective (i.e., not Tina), so I looked it up and was shocked to see it was a Mark Knopfler song. The line "Tell me, do you want to see me do the shimmy again?" really hasn't aged well. It's all about the twerk these days.

My listenable Bob Dylan is one song long...and it was #14 for me in this exercise. I've tried many times before to integrate more from his catalog (i.e. the last month), but every time I try I hit skip before the halfway point. We'll see what happens this afternoon!

You're missing out on one of the richest catalogs in all of music.

Bosley would be rolling over in his grave if he knew any tricks.
Dylan is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and his stuff is great to listen to...

...when somebody else covers it. I'm sorry, as good as he is as a songwriter, he's that bad as a singer. One of the most unlistenable voices ever. It's the one drawback to the Traveling Wilburys - Bob doesn't keep his mouth closed and let other people sing nearly often enough.

I know some of you will find this sacrilege, and I apologize.

Can we all just agree that Surrender by Cheap Trick is a great fricken song?
Like mommy and daddy, it’s all right.

Seems a little weird.
Some Indonesian junk
That's going 'round

Speaking of lyrics from this song. I'm sure most of you know about the original lyrics thing:

"Before we married, Mommy served in the WACS in the Philippines."
Now, I had heard the WACS recruited old maids for the war.
But mommy isn't one of those, I've known her all these years.

The original line that Rick Nielsen wrote was: "Now I had heard the WACS recruited old maids, dykes and whores."

The record company made him rewrite it so it would get more airplay on the radio.

Here is and alt version with lyrics close to the original:

Also a "mess up" at 1:08 - started on the next verse too early me thinks.

Best new: Sun Kil Moon - Lost Verses (by a lot) - I enjoyed the first add some rounds ago, but this was another level. Gonna be exploring more of them
Bronze: Frankenstein - although it may have medaled before and I forgot :bored:
Silver: Come Monday - if I were to pick a Buffet song it'd be this one. It wasn't the first one to hit my playlists, but it's now the most frequent play.
Gold: Suspicious Minds - as I mentioned a few rounds ago this vs In The Ghetto is really a depends on the day decision

I'm going to see X tonight. I've probably seen them 25 times in the past 40+ years and the only covers I've ever heard them play are "Soul Kitchen", "Dancing with Tears in my Eyes" and "Breathless". If they break out a version of "Lawyers Guns and Money", I'm changing my name to Warren.

 I saw them last week. They did "Breathless" and "Soul Kitchen." No Zevon.

Suggest starting with the old SKM and his Red House Painters stuff. Mark Kozelek is a homie but man he's put out some dull records over the past decade or so.

Dylan's voice has gone through a bunch of changes over the past sixty years. I admit there are some records where he sounds like he's gargling gravel but he's rarely out of tune and his sense of phrasing is masterful.

I had just turned 19 that year and remember it well because I was at an adult entertainment club and had my first lap dance to this song.
I also remember being happy because i knew it was a long song. :excited:

weird - same thing that happened to me - but I had access to the email ...but the message would just come back and tell me that account was already taken by another user.

You may want to pass on to KP - to tell the FBG guys it sounds like what happened to Binky. I ended up having to have them allow me to set up a brand new account. Hopefully that won't happen to KP.

ETA: btw ... I didn't get much traction until @krista4 pulled some strings with Joe B. you may not need that - thanks again k4! :hifive:

an is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and his stuff is great to listen to...

...when somebody else covers it. I'm sorry, as good as he is as a songwriter, he's that bad as a singer. One of the most unlistenable voices ever. It's the one drawback to the Traveling Wilburys - Bob doesn't keep his mouth closed and let other people sing nearly often enough.
There are a lot of Bob Dylan songs that sound better by someone else. I also think there are a lot of Bob Dylan songs that sound good with him. He doesn't have a good voice, but it is distinct, and I think it fits well in the genre of storytelling/folk music. It works for me, anyway. Since we are on the subject of bad singers, I don't think Warren Zevon has a good voice, either.

Maybe we can have a bad singer draft after the holidays?
