Favre To Retire! (1 Viewer)

LOL at all the sadness....this is the guy that the same people keep complaining about every year....MAKE UP YOUR MIND, PLAY OR RETIRE. Well, he made a decision and made it early enough so his team could make the proper adjustments. Quit acting like this came out of nowhere, you been living in a cave for the past 2 years?
Stop.
I like the guy and he was and still is GREAT for the game, but many acting like this is a total shock is really silly. You may not like it, but it's the truth as any football fan knew this could have happened the past several seasons.

Madden on suicide watch?
Joe stole your joke for the email updates.
Hi Folks,

I won't be wearing you out with every bit of news this month but if you hadn't heard

already, I wanted to let you know of the big news coming out of Green Bay this

morning. Brett Favre is calling it a career.

Professional way to close out a great career and it gives the team plenty of time

to prepare and figure out how to move forward. Obviously, this is terrible news for

not just the Packers but also the receiving corps and running game from a fantasy

football angle. There will be plenty of talk over the next few months about how

they fill the void.

In related news, all sharp objects were removed from the Madden Cruiser this morning...

Have a great rest of your week.

J
Now announcers will just double the amount of drool for Brady and Manning. Even as a Colts fan I don't know if I could take that.

Whether you liked him or not, you had to respect him as a player and a competitor. The man loved to play the game and it showed.
Oh lord how I will NOT miss that being said about him every time he appears on camera. I swear, for every time he was seen smiling and loving the game I saw two of him sulking.Favre was a grade A talent, but let's get off the hero worship since he has asked for and recieved special treatment for years. He may have never said he was going to retire before, but he sure had me convinced last year when he was crying after his magical win over the bears second string. When I think of class acts I think of guys like Elway who never took special priveleges. Is he due priveleges being a HOF QB? Absolutely. But it would be much more commendable if he didn't indulge himself in them. The timing of the Moss signing and his imminent retirement may only be circumstantial, but after his tantrum last year threatening to stay out of one of the minicamps I am not surprised in the least. I do however think it odd that most Packer fans I've seen internet wide were in such denial over his possible retirement. The Packers will still have a very solid team next year. Rodgers will not be the difference maker that Favre was this year, but they still have a lot going for them in spite of the retirement. They probably would lose close contests that they won this year but that won't keep them out of the playoffs.

Culpepper?
Why?I'm sure they'll just draft somebody. Rodgers is more than ready at this point. Not saying he'll take them to the promised land but bringing damaged goods to a team so young is not a good idea, IMO.Congrats to Favre on a great career.

When did he ever ask for special treatment?Elway? The guy who was drafted and refused to play for the team he was drafted by? Are you freakin serious? When did he ever indulge himself in his accomplishments? Good lord...are you people seriously making this crap up for fun?Tantrum last year? The one nobody could ever quote him on? That one?

Because they still need a veteran QB. They are a good enough team that if Rodgers go down...they can still compete for the playoffs. They will have a vet backup.

Interesting. He must not have really thought this team could win the Superbowl then..

Did he leave on a high note, or a low note?

He did have a great season for a 39 y.o. QB... but his last pass was a gross interception that ruined the run.

And a damn shame too because I'm pretty sure GB would've gotten stomped by New England and we wouldn't have had to witness the Super Gross.

I guess not very many careers can end "Elway-style" though...

even Jordan walked off the court the last time as a loser... to A.I.

and you'd have to say he ended on a low note.

That was before Elway actually played a down. Favre asked for special treatment each time he took over a month to decide whether or not to reitre. The tantrum that I am referring to is one you and I have talked about before. The one where he threatened to sit out minicamp due to "his daughter's graduation party" and he subsequently asked to be traded when they did not land Moss last year.Enjoy your cheese and denial.

I'm very impressed with all of the Vikings, Bears, and Lions fans posting on the ESPN site. Most of them that hate the Packers still seemed to like/respect Brett and wish him well in retirement. Brett is one of the few players where fans of division rivals would still pull for him when their team wasn't playing the Pack. I think that says a ton about the way he played and the person he was.

I think he was one of the greatest of all time, but I can certainly see why some don't. He was special player and will be missed.

But it was more special treatment than Favre ever asked for.its not special treatment to take a while to retire. And you know how many times he took a while to decide? Once. 2 years ago. Last year they had his answer by the Super Bowl.Yup...the tantrum is the rumored one that Brett denies and that nobody could ever quote him as saying he asked for any trades. Not denial...factual...instead false opinions and statements that were nothing but rumor.

These clowns on ESPN2 right now are a disgrace. A legend retires, and instead of talking about his legacy, they are all saying how they think he will go back on this and play next year. Favre deserves better than to basically be accused of being full of #### on the day he retires.
Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me.

Threatening and following through are two completely different animals. While Favre has certainly done some questionable things throughout his career he ALWAYS showed up and played his heart out. Nothing Favre has done can compare to Elway boycotting playing for the Colts.

It would not surprise me if this summer he gets antsy and wants to return.

Respect. . . .Sad to see him go. . . .Wish I would have made it to GB one more time to see him. Burns me up even more knowing that I was 3 points away from seeing him here in AZ in the big game as his final game :goodposting:

Of all the reasons, I think the cold had a big impact. . .sounds odd. . .but check it

If I remember correctly. . . .from Oct - early December, most interviews he mentioned that he could see him self playing 1, 2 or even 3 more seasons. . .then came the Bears game in Chi, and he just looked nasty cold and miserable. . . .bounce back against SeaTown in a warm snow, and then an sub temp game where they lost again. . .and although it was only 3 points, Favre just didnt look good.

(Records + Age + Cold + Family)Out on a positive season = Retirement with out a Montana / Young ending

As bummed as I am, we could have only asked for more by asking for a Superbowl as a final game. . . .instead we get a QB hanging up the cleats after a season that was 2nd best in most respects to Tom Brady that year, and injury free. I'll take that as a Favre fan any day.

Thanks Favre

I woke up this morning to this? :goodposting: I'm surprised. With the state of the team I never thought he'd leave this year. I thought for sure he'd give it one more shot. That being said, I'm not worried about the team at all. I've always been a Rodgers supporter and I'm somewhat excited to see him show his stuff. I'll miss Brett, but we have a lot of memories to live with. Thanks for the memories #4! Fans of the other teams in the NFC North must be screaming rather loudly today.

Moss was not coming to Green Bay this year. Those rumors, were just that rumors. Moss was not going to leave the best organization with the best quarterback to come to a team with a QB on his last legs. Plus Favre had plenty of weapons now so this is NOT the reason why he retired.
ESPN radio is saying two sources said that he told them he would have stayed if they would have gone out and got Moss.
Thats BS. He didn't need Moss. That would basically be slamming Driver, Jennings, et al. I don't believe that for a second.

Very sad day indeed. He's my favorite non-Raider ever.

As someone who is about Brett's age, he made me feel young as long as he kept playing. Now it's time to lay down and die. I guess I'm now the world's biggest Jeff Feagles fan. ;)

Thanks for the memories, 4.

Thanks for making the Packers a good team again and giving us a great rivalry. Hopefully they don't go too far down the crapper after you have left.

Congrats, you have two of the dumbest posts I've seen here in awhile. How many other players took time to decide to play or not? Is Strahan asking for special treatment too when he asks for 10 mill guaranteed to come back? Clearly your not a fan of the game if you don't appreciate what Favre brought to the game. He played it for the love of the game and not the glory. Look around the thread and check out the posts from non-Packer fans and you'll see what people are feeling. Your hate posts really make you look silly.

the espn story says:
In his voice mail message to Mortensen on Tuesday, Favre said the Packers' lack of pursuit of Moss was not the driving reason why he retired."This is not about the Packers and who they got or who they didn't get. I get along fine with [Thompson] and I get along great with [McCarthy]. Do I agree with them all the time? No. But the bottom line is, none of that stuff affected my decision," Favre said.

Any chance all the bickering in this thread can stop?

Favre retiring is like the Pope retiring. Show a little respect.

Per Rotoworld:

The Packers have officially announced Brett Favre's retirement. Brett Favre's agent Bus Cook said he thought Favre wanted to play another year, but didn't feel that the Packers wanted him back.

It sounds like this story isn't over yet. "I think he felt he could play one more year. I don't know if they told him they really wanted him to play. That's just the feeling I got," Cook said. Cook said the Packers didn't try to talk him out of retiring. When asked if Favre could be talked out of the decision, he said, "I don't know." ESPN's Chris Mortensen thought Favre sounded "absolute" about retiring.

And to expand that further...http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3276034

McCarthy said he and Favre had never discussed bringing in Moss.

"But I can tell you one thing, never once in all my converstaions with Brett this offseason has he ever asked or told me that we had to have Randy Moss for him to come back and play," McCarthy told Mortensen. "Randy Moss' name never came up once. And it bothers me that [Favre's agent] has made this an issue."

Read Mortensen's words on ESPN.com story I just posted.Nobody is sure what the hell Bus was talking about.

Count me among those who always thought Favre greatly over-rated.

BUT...When you're touted as one of the best ever, it's easy to be over-rated, and he was one of the best of his generation. He played with a special fire that very few others could match.

This NFL fan will miss him.

As opposed to ESPN always being accurate right? Get over yourself.

What an absolute great career. I am glad to see him leave on a high note with the excellent season he had last year. I am shocked though that he is leaving this year as the team looks like it is very close to a Champion. But it amazed me that someone his age could still play at the highest levels (and take the hard hits without ever missing games). Thanks for all of the memories Brett. You certainly will be missed.

Pretty sad that the last pass he ever threw in the NFL was that sideline out that got picked and led to the G-Men's winning field goal.

Although it is blasphemous to say this in Chicago, I always liked Favre. Does this mean the best QB in the NFC North is now Kitna? I don't even know whom I would rank second-best QB in the NFC North.
 That's just a tough way to go out.

This could get interesting....

"FAVRE SITUATION SUDDENLY GETS WEIRD Posted by Mike Florio on March 4, 2008, 11:55 a.m.

As it turns out, that dark cloud in Wisconsin could quickly become a storm.

Brett Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, has told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that Favre wanted to play another year, but that he felt like the Packers didn’t want him.

Uh-oh.

“I know he wants to play one more year,” Cook said. “I do not know much conversation there was and I don’t think anyone forced him to make that decision. But I don’t know that anyone tried to talk him out of it.”

Uh-oh.

“I think he wanted to play,” Cook said. ” I think he’s still got it. He knows he’s still got it. I think he felt he could play one more year. I don’t know if they told him they really wanted him to play. That’s just the feeling I got.”

Uh-oh.

Asked whether Favre could be talked into returning, Cook said, “I don’t know.”

Well, maybe the media speculation that the guy who brought Favre to Green Bay, former G.M. Ron Wolf, might be whispering to Bill Parcells about trying to get Favre to Miami is more accurate than we initially thought. Because if Favre wants to play another year and if it’s not with the Packers, then maybe it will be elsewhere.

But if Favre doesn’t play for the Packers in 2008, either because he’s playing for someone else or not playing at all, we think that there could be an enormous backlash against the team. Specifically, G.M. Ted Thompson could find himself in the crosshairs of the fans’ criticism.

Never mind the fact that Thompson has done an excellent job; the perception that he ran off Brett Favre could be the quickest ticket out of town for Thompson.

If, in the end, Thompson gets saddled with the brunt of the blame for Favre’s departure, the pressure on Thompson to leave, too, will be tremendous. And, as a practical matter, it will put him on an incredibly short leash if the team falters in 2008. "

As posted in the other thread...I don't think anyone has a clue what the hell Bus was talking about. He gave his opinon...but it does not seem to hold water given the comments by Favre to Mort and by McCarthy.http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3276034

In his voice mail message to Mortensen on Tuesday, Favre said the Packers' lack of pursuit of Moss was not the driving reason why he retired.

"This is not about the Packers and who they got or who they didn't get. I get along fine with [Thompson] and I get along great with [McCarthy]. Do I agree with them all the time? No. But the bottom line is, none of that stuff affected my decision," Favre said.

Bummer. He is my favorite NFL player. I was hoping he would play at least one more year. I've never seen another player express their love for the game as jubilantly as Favre did. I'm really going to miss watching him play.
