I'll believe it when week 1 starts and he's not taking the snap. Anything leading up to that is speculation, purposeful misdirection, or flat out media manipulation.

PFT:

Many of you scoffed at our report of uneasiness in Mankato regarding the Brett Favre situation.

Scoff no more.

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Favre began telling team officials on Monday night that he will not return for another season. The disclosure comes on the heels of an observation from Zulgad that team "ownership and power brokers" held a meeting at practice that "looked very intense."

Zulgad also reports that Favre plans to issue a press release later today. Apparently, Favre's injured ankle "has not responded" after surgery and rehab.

Jay Glazer of FOX also reports that Favre has begun communicating the message to teammates.

Wow if true. What a jerk. I think it's funny as hell as a Packer fan, but way to screw the whole Viking organization.

"If this is true, then what Brett Favre did to Minnesota is WAY WORSE than what LeBron James did to Cleveland." -- Colin Cowherd

If the press release comes out, then I think all of the Vikes skill positions players outside of ADP become too risky at their CURRENT ADPs. But I suspect the market will quickly adjust and once that happens, I'll reevaluate whether there's a place on my team for the likes of Harvin or Rice or Shiancoe or Berrian.

Jay Glazer:

Favre has told teammates he will NOT play this season, citing wear and tear on his body. Team is hoping he will change his mind

I think it's BS. Favre watch is getting lower ratings than Sharkweek and he just wants to drum up some attention before he makes his messianic return.#3 is a restatement of the conclusion itself, not an argument in favor of it.

So what we are left with is #1 and #2.

Have we heard this type of scuttlebut before and it turn out to be incorrect?

Apparently Favre has told every team in the NFL that he's not playing for them because coaches are huddling up on practice fields in every training camp.

#3 is a restatement of the conclusion itself, not an argument in favor of it.

The point is this is incremental, and ultimately meaningless UNLESS you have a draft in the next few hours. Barring that, let's wait to see if Favre or the team actually make a statement affirming or denying these reports.

I won't believe it til he is not out there at some point.

However, if its true...Im surprised he would do this to any team. Thought for sure he would play...but if the ankle is really bothering him, than I can't blame him.

Just wow...sucks for Vikings fans.

Adam Schefter:

Judd Zulgad's reporting a story we've been chasing all morning. Brett Favre has sent text messages to teammates saying, This is it.

Was TE#5 in 2008. Tavaris Jackson actually has a pretty strong arm although not very accurate. I would actually still like Shiancoe as the 9th-12th TE off the board. Berrian is still value and this will only send him further down the boards.

I'm surprised about Favre but then again I can't see him walking away from a team that is this talented. Even TJax and Rosenfels can get these guys into the playoffs. I would think ADP will see even more touches, maybe pushes him to RB1 overall.

I laughed at Minnesota when they didn't pursue McNabb - They should have brought him in and told Brett to not let the door hit him on the way out. Absolute best case scenario for the Vikes was that Favre would play one more year before retiring. Worst case scenario is... Well, this.

If his injured ankle isn't responding to treatment, what do you expect him to do? Lie to the Vikings and tell them that he is going to play?
No I don't expect him to lie, but to drag it out this long is beyond ridiculous. But this is what Brett Favre does. He should have had the ankle surgery right away after last year then he would have known much earlier. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he just have the surgery earlier this year?

if hes hurt... then what is there to be mad at? Hes 40 yrs old!!! the body just doesn't heal like it used to.
Yeah, I'm not understanding the hate here either. I've been highly critical of Favre over the years for some of the stuff he's done, but I just don't see any valid criticism here. Everyone else assumed Favre was coming back, but that's not because of anything he said. He said he wanted to see how his body feels, and that seems very logical to me. And so assuming he feels like crap now, how is he to blame? He never said he was coming back.

Agreed...if its just the ankle...and its not going to be ready and he can't go anymore...not much he could do.But it does look bad and hurts them that they have not been able to prepare for this.

ADP's value just went THUD..
 Yeah, dropped from #1 overall pick to #2 overall pick. He's still got a great line and he's not human....he's a machine. Sharks will still draft him high. Don't be cute with your top pick, guppie.

this seems to typical of favre, build the drama up for a couple weeks, ask for more money, get it and come back.

I'm not sure you can say Favre really did anything wrong here. Minnesota knew this was what they were getting in to. Favre would play as long as he could, but at some point this was going to happen.

Pssst. Using terms like "Shark/Guppie" is so 2002And ADP was already at #1 overall behind LBJ

Smokescreen.......for real though, I'm gonna be pissed, I just traded for him the other day.
Well I dropped Tavaris Jackson about a week ago.
And I picked him up a week ago. (Disclosure - its a 20 team dynasty that WAY overvalues QBs. He's the only arm I could get that had even a remote chance of playing)

ADP's ADP is lower then it has been since he entered the league. Furthermore, he put up better yardage numbers with Ferrorrorote and Jackson under center in 2008 then he did in 2009.

1) He hasn't said anything yet

2) If he does, why the anger?

3) He's been pretty forthright this whole offseason. He said he wanted to play, he had the surgery he needed to, and he's kept his coaches and ownership apprised of his progress

4) He's also said that the pain and recovery have been slow, but he was hoping that would change

I don't think there's any chance in the world Favre wouldn't play if he felt he could. So if, in fact, he does announce plans to not play, I think you have to accept him at his word. What would he have to gain by saying otherwise at this point?

I agree with the poster that said he could have dealt with this better, he waited and waited on the surgery to the very last point he could have got it, restricting the Vikes options here.

Here is the twitter address, you can follow it yourself. ownership is still holding out hope per Judd.

JuddZulgadKeep in mind I'm hearing Vikings still feel the situation is fluid. As I said before still time to talk him out of it.

Yes, the Vikings are still practicing. Not clear if press release will be from Favre or Vikings.

There is a chance ownership will go back to Favre with an offer of more than the 13 million for this season.

I'm told Favre has said his ankle has simply not responded and that is why he won't be back.

The hate in here is ridiculous. He didn't ask for money. Nothing is confirmed. He hasn't held the presser (and even if he did he could very well be back two weeks after that). Some guys need to check themselves in here.

Go ahead and take him top 5 then, and expect 8 man fronts all season. He won't last long facing that. I'll pass..

I really don't think this matters. I truly believe that if he physically could he would.
