FBG'S TOP 81 LED ZEPPELIN SONGS: #1 - When The Levee Breaks from Led Zeppelin IV (1971) (1 Viewer)

more debut opening track goodness:

Bauhaus - Double Dare  sludgey dirge from the goff godfathers.

Jesus & Mary Chain - Just Like Honey hard pressed to find a more compelling platter from the '80s - aptly described as the Stooges meeting the Beach Boys in the Velvets kitchen.

Joy Division - Disorder how much more claustrophobic can all those near escape "whooooohes" make ya feel? game changer.  periodt.

Sex Pistols - Holidays in the Sun you can have yer "God Save the Queen" and "Anarchy" and "Pretty Vacant" ... this was the best track the boys ever laid down - Matlock presence legit, Jonesy outta his mind.

New York Dolls - Personality Crisis not even a touch ironic, no? when folks wonder about the buzz around these cats, this is always a great intro. sloppy, bluesy, ballsy, grimey - filth.

groundbreaking #### that helped change the landscape all ... some not as seismic as others, but these are more than your garden variety " hi, how do ya do?" opening salvos.

Furthering the "what if" discussion for lead singer options had Plant been out of the picture . . . why not Lou Gramm?
Gramm is only a couple of years younger than Plant . . . he just didn't catch a break as soon as Plant did. It's unlikely Lou and Jimmy would have crossed paths, so it would have been unlikely.

Crazy . . . or crazy like a fox? Here are three Zep covers from 1997 with Gramm at the microphone:

Black Dog, Heartbreaker, Stairway To Heaven
On a related note.....prior to forming Foreigner, Mick Jones worked as a session guitarist in France, and crossed paths with Jimmy Page on a few occasions. Here are a couple tracks that they recorded with French rocker Johnny Hallyday in 1967:

A Tout Casser
Psychedelic

  • Florence & The Machine: “Dog Days Are Over”
  • Alabama Shakes: “Hold On”
  • The Go-Go’s: “Our Lips Are Sealed”
And a personal favorite:

Van Morrison: "Brown Eyed Girl"

My wife has brown eyes and both my girls do.  Possibly the most sentimental song of all time for me.

This tangent was about top 10 first song, first album songs, not the Beatles top 25 rankings.

Yeah, I got confused by those comments for a second.  It's still in my top 10 first songs off a debut album because anything The Beatles does make my top 5 or top 10.

And FTR, I Saw Her Standing There absolutely made my top 25 list - comfortably.

Well speaking of Top 10 there is a song that wasn't on my radar when I put together my rankings but this thread opened my eyes to it. Now I can't get enough of it and would probably put it in my top 10 if I did my rankings today.

The Song?

In the Light

I love that song.

Everybody needs the light.

Has to be top 5 or 10 unless someone just hates the Beatles.
It's nowhere near my top 10 first songs nor my Beatles top 25. It's a good song and it'd be in my top 10 pre-Revolver, but my Beatles interests primarily reside in their later work.

I had forgotten about it and this exercise got it back into my orbit. I didn't write it down beforehand, but by the time I got to submit it was on the cusp of that last few out tier.

It would be the #1 song if the countdown were derived only from my list (#8) and my friend's (#1).

Only one other song was top 10 for both of us, and it hasn't appeared yet.

I still have 5 of my top 10 left.  Most of the ones gone I can understand but you all are a bunch of heathens for ranking Going to California so low.

Where are the updates?  Jeez, talking about letting the air out of the balloon. Threads like this, you have to keep moving and not take too much time off before posting the next song(s).

Anarchy told us he’s away for a week.  As much enjoyment as I’ve gotten out of the thread and as much work as he’s put in, he’s earned some down time.

Post Zeppelin, I have to say I like Robert Plants work much better than anything Jimmy Page has done.

I spent a lot of time listening to Plant in the late 80's ...and loved it

I don't think much about comparing the two - so very different

I just accept who they are and enjoy what they have given us

it lasts forever man

Anarchy is doing a fantastic job in here, no negativity is necessary.

Only one of our top 10 not to make the list was “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You.”

Jimmy's performance at NetAid in 1999.
Dazed & Confused, Domino (Unreleased Song), In My Time Of Dying, and Whole Lotta Love (the last two with the Robinson Brothers from the Black Crowes). This was after Page & Plant were done (they would perform together once more two years after this) and just before Jimmy & the Crowes was a thing. Live at the Greek was recorded the following week.

All I know is that is seems that an album featuring Page on lead guitar and Paul Rodgers on vocals should be great, and yet...
