I usually laugh more during movies that aren't straight comedies - ie Cabin in the Woods or Get Out vs. Game Night or NeighborsInteresting. A poll of favorite comedies would be interesting.

What is your comedy Mt Rushmore?I usually laugh more during movies that aren't straight comedies - ie Cabin in the Woods or Get Out vs. Game Night or Neighbors
Whoa, good question. I would probably have to think about that. (and PM you since I take enough #### about my crap comedy tastes as it is)What is your comedy Mt Rushmore?
Nearly impossible to answer... based purely on laughs off the top of my head: City Lights, Bringing Up Baby, Some Like It Hot, Dr. Strangelove but I could just as easily goWhoa, good question. This is Spinal Tap, Monty Pyhton and the Holy Grail, Superbad and Dumb and Dumber.
D&Der is great. Same with 40 YOV and Mary. Those are well worthy of Rushmore spots.
Yeah, mine would be a lot newer than that.
Off the top of my head movies like Kingpin, Step Brothers, Clerks, Dumb and Dumber came to mind with Cable Guy, There's Something About Mary, 40 Year Old Virgin on the cusp or rotated in. I think it would take me quite a bit before I got to pre-90s comedies as far as what I would grab off my shelf to watch if I needed a laugh.
ETA:
I think of those I listed, Cable Guy would be the odd man out for most. So many scenes crack me up though - from basketball game to porno password to first scene when he comes to Brodrick's house. Don't know how the general population feels about Kingpin, either.D&Der is great. Same with 40 YOV and Mary. Those are well worthy of Rushmore spots.

Was Punch Drunk Love really a comedy? I actually like it but I don't really see it as a comedy but then again not sure what you could label it otherwise.Oof. Sadly I can't think of any really recent stuff, but again, my comedy meter is off. I tried more popular stuff like Game Night and thought it was pretty terrible.
Best I could think of that I remember really liking was Bad Words, but that was 2013. I also seem to gravitate towards squirm-enducing, uncomfortable comedies.
HERE is a list of the Rolling Stone's top 50 comedies of the 21st Century. Some toward the top I love (Step Brothers, Tropic Thunder) others I hate (Wes Anderson, and surprisingly Punch Drunk). But a lot of that list also feels like most of the list is from the 1st part of the decade.

About as much a comedy as There Will Be BloodWas Punch Drunk Love really a comedy? I actually like it but I don't really see it as a comedy but then again not sure what you could label it otherwise.
I am watching a few films but my list will be short. I just don't like a lot of these 70s films.Doesn't seem to be a ton of interest in this year. Of course it's one that I had more excitement for the top movies than most years in the 70s.
I watched Jaws 2 and The Fury this week, and that didn't do much to convince me about any better quality towards the middle to bottom of the list of movies (no surprise there).
Still going to get in Last Waltz and maybe a Dawn of the Dead re-watch, but it might be time to start up some '94 research.
Jaws was a film that shouldn't have had any sequels from an artistic perspective but obviously rules.Doesn't seem to be a ton of interest in this year. Of course it's one that I had more excitement for the top movies than most years in the 70s.

I liked this year, and thought it was deeper than 1974 and 1971. Easier for me to get to at least 10 than it was in those years. I haven't really discovered anything that wowed me in research, but I've liked quite a few in research digging past the well-known ones (like Blue Collar and The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith).Doesn't seem to be a ton of interest in this year. I am really good with that list.20th C Rushmore: The Producers (1968), A Night at the Opera, Holy Grail, Dr Strangelove (Groundhog Day, if Dr S is disqualified as a drama)
21st C Rushmore: Borat, 40yo Virgin, Juno, Napoleon Dynamite
ETA: point of reference - none of the 21st C comedies crack the all-time comedy Rushmore
I'm a sucker for brands of humor which havent before been mined so, for all its dead spots, the purity of and faith in personal weirdness in NP made me laugh & cry.Wikkid always has a surprise for me on his lists - this time it's Napoleon Dynamite.
If that had come out a year later, it would have won my 2nd Rushmore with 1000 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>s to #2Being John Malkovich.
Serious love for both of those movies. Yeah, they are different.Kingpin is good. I feel like it has a Step Bros rep.

Cable Guy's gonna be very high on my '96 list - for my money that's when they finally got solo Carrey right
I've noticed that a lot of my favorite comedies are ones that I really didn't love (or even like at all in Napoleon's case) the first time, but grew on me after repeat viewings. Napoleon, Cable Guy, Kingpin, would fall into this category. The opposite are movies like The Hangover where I laughed a bit the first time, but got less and less funny on repeat viewings.
A good list!others I'd throw out there...
Raising Arizona
King of Comedy
Being John Malkovich.
Young Frankenstein/Saddles
Yep, that and Kingpin are the same year, so that means a comedy might actually get some pretty high points from me for once. We will see because there is a lot of stuff I love from the year.Cable Guy's gonna be very high on my '96 list - for my money that's when they finally got solo Carrey right
Trainspotting going to score high for me comedy-wise.Yep, that and Kingpin are the same year, so that means a comedy might actually get some pretty high points from me for once. We will see because there is a lot of stuff I love from the year.
I'm still planning on catching a couple films before voting fwiw. But reviewing other lists here and elsewhere, it's slim pickins for me.Maybe I should fire up the '96 thread early.
78 on imdb but 79 on wiki, which is our source. have to pick between Despair & 13 Moons if you want some FassbinderIs The Marriage of Maria Braun 78 or 79?
not that it much matters, but i'd like to replace Desire with Maria Braun in my top 20 then. My favorite Fassbinder til Krista turned us on to Ali and definitely a flick to check outKarmaPolice said:@Eephus - I see it as '78. Wiki's first line states it's a 78 film and it looks like it premiered at Cannes that year.
No simile needed tbh.Days of Heaven is like watching wheat grow,,,,
Holy #### I forgot about Watership Down. Brutal!! I really dug that as a kid.ok... I didn't get to see Northern Lights, Big Wednesday or Killer of Sheep- not available on my streaming services, and I never saw them originally or since. I have a feeling they'd all go above most of the things I've listed here.
a few sentimental favorite comedies and kung-fu films, but in another year with better movies, they'd probably not rate.
- Days of Heaven- 30
- The Deer Hunter- 30
- National Lampoon's Animal House- 30
- The Last Waltz- 30
- The Tree of Wooden Clogs- 15
- Heaven Can Wait- 10
- Foul Play- 10
- La Cage aux Folles- 5
- Revenge of the Pink Panther - 5
- Watership Down- 5
- Gates of Heaven- 5
- Drunken Master- 5
- Boys from Brazil- 5
- Five Deadly Venoms- 5
- The 36th Chamber of Shaolin- 5

Mornings of Sorghum is a triumph! No simile needed tbh.
If its shot as beautifully as that, I'll watch just about any cash crop grow.
