FFA Movie Poll - 1984 Lists Due 7/29 (1 Viewer)

I just skimmed every page here and have not seen mention of "A Soldier's Story".  Adolph Caeser as the crazy army sergeant is amazing! Highly recommend (plus early Denzel).

This is in my wheelhouse, in '84 I dated womens who liked the big screen and stopped by the video store almost everyday.

Marino tossed 48 is how I focus on the exact year.

I don't know how many other years I could have done that for. 1984 is the right mix of timeframe for our age group, huge blockbusters and a strong depth of popular movies. No way I could have done trivia that everyone would have been able to do pretty well at for 55-59 or some random year in the 71.

"Swing Shift" is airing on TCM at the bottom of the hour.  This was Jonathan Demme's first big budget film and by some accounts was ruined in post-production due to differences of opinion between the director and Goldie Hawn.

14 was average. @Brony is the leader at 17. Most missed question was the Friday the 13th question with only 35% answering it correctly.
:bowtie:   I think I've seen more 1984 movies than the last 10 years combined.  Actually, I know I have.     But please don't expect any cinematic gems in my 1984 list.

"Once Upon a Time in America" update #2

I'm now 1/3 of the way through.  At 75 minutes, I'm approaching the length of typical feature films but I'm still in the childhood backstory part of OUATIA.

I love Sergio Leone's work but this is plodding even by his standards.  There's a scene where old man Noodles walks into a room, climbs a ladder and gazes through the peep hole where he once watched young Deborah dance.  An old Hollywood director like Hawks would have done a point of view shot showing the ladder and the peep hole, cut to de Niro climbing and then to a shot of him looking through the hole.   Leone does a tracking shot of de Niro slowly walking and climbing, a close-up of the peep hole followed by a long reverse shot of his eyes through the hole while the music swells.  It takes a couple of minutes to do a scene that a more efficient director would handle in 15 seconds.  I get that it's a significant transition in the story and it needs to establish that Noodles is reminiscing but I felt myself aging in real time while it was happening.

Reminder bump for lists due in a few days.

I am thinking the countdown might take 2 days.  We have to go scope out a couple daycares in the morning and we are heading to a concert in Milwaukee that night.

I have watched zero (0) new-to-me movies for this year's poll, primarily due to the fact that I'm moving tomorrow.  I did, however, sign up for a Film Struck membership today just so that I can watch @Eephus's recommendation of The Hit.  I'll try to watch Saturday and get a list in by Sunday!

I'm probably not going to fit this in before Sunday but this exercise reminded me of "Secret Honor".  I remember hearing about this one when it came out but never had the chance to see it.  It's on YouTube :excited:

It's one of Robert Altman's most unusual efforts: a filmed one-man show with Philip Baker Hall playing Richard Nixon.  It made the top 10 lists of both Siskel and Ebert in 1984.  To get a taste of what it's like, I skipped around and watched a few minutes here and there.  It harkens back to Altman's early days directing for television.  Philip Baker Hall is a character actor with an impressive body of work--you'd recognize his face from other later movies.

Wishing I had an extra week, as it has been a bad couple of weeks for me.  I haven't found a good time to rent the movies that are high on my watch list, mostly because they are all pretty long and Amazon's 24 hour rental restrictions have made that tough to find time for.  I've also had to deal with my kid figuring out how to climb out of his crib recently, which has thrown off my nightly routine.

May have to try this whole getting out of my house and going to the library thing. I'd at least like to get Amadeus in.

Toughest year so far to cut down - like I said no stone cold classics but very "thick" field.

yeah. phew- brutal year. cut probably another 20 that would normally be on the list- combo of objective and subjective favorites

#1 was easy-ish for me, but the rest. yikes. usually easy to break into tiers to help narrow things down, but it's like a tier of more than 20 after tap. and I'm sure I'm missing a ton once I look at other people's lists...

i'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on Amadeus

it was one of a bunch that was right there. a different day/mood and it might go anywhere as high as 15-20. I haven't rewatched it since seeing it in the theaters where I liked, not loved it. part of the indifference for me- I saw the play on broadway and loved it. it was a long time ago so I don't remember too much of why, but I remember walking out of the movie theater and thinking it didn't stack up. I do remember thinking Abraham was amazing, but conversely found Hulce's performance to be irritating- and not in the "oh, mozart is supposed to be irritating" way... it was the performance I found grating, not the character or writing. that's about all I've got.

did you see Tim Curry as Mozart? i did and that completely ruined Hulce for me and kept it from being a 'perfect' movie

I had hoped to re-watch Amadeus during this cycle but I fell down the Once Upon a Time in America rabbit hole.

I'm going to rate it based on an overall positive impression from when I watched it on VHS in the late 80s but I'm curious how time would have changed my perceptions.  My interest in classical music is much greater now but my tolerance for immature geniuses has diminished equally.

ETA:  I thought Hulce was fine in the role

funny- I don't remember. and tbh, we were in london in the very early 80s for vacation and saw 2 different shows there... amadeus might have been one of them.

but "perfect" movie? I'll have to revisit.. teenage me- and I respect his opinions more than my current ones- had reservations. but current me respects your opinions too... so I'll try to rewatch soon.

eta: curry... now he seems like he'd be a perfect amadeus. and now that I'm thinking of it, hulce's performance seems like he's trying to be curry (in general, not necessarily from the show).

I first saw Once upon etc in a theater revival... which I think made a big difference in my appreciation for it. I've tried watching on TV when it comes up- because I liked it - but I don't think it translates to the small screen as well. felt epic- scope, vision and yeah... length... a lot of which doens't work on my tv for me.

I'm watching it on a laptop which is even worse :bag:

I made it to the 2 hour mark last night and am still just past halftime.  My general impression so far is it's a movie I respect more than love.

I struggled the most with this year - too many good films. None of the other poll years seemed as good as this one.
