fine line. For me, the KK scene that is better is when Daniel blocks all of Miyagi's attacks and realizes his weird training style is legit.
@krista4 -I'm here! Should I throw in a down and dirty list? It will have virtually no thought or care attached to it.
Just put it together based on what other people have mentioned in the thread. No time for outside research or to watch any I hadn't seen yet (though will still watch The Hit since I signed up for that damn Filmstruck subscription just to watch it!). As a result, it's definitely my most mainstream list so far.

Credit to @wikkidpissah for that. I didn't realize it either but saw it on his list. IIRC 28 Up was one of the best ones.oh #### ...I had forgotten that this was a year for the "Up" series. Nice catch Krista.

Yeah, but it's a lot more fun when you do. I've watched some fantastic movies due to these threads.I like that idea.Yeah, but it's a lot more fun when you do. I've watched some fantastic movies due to these threads.
ETA: Might be fun when we're done to make a list of favorite movies we watched only because of recommendations in these threads.
Feel free to ignore my list. I didn't realize things had moved on to 1984 until now. Been a bit busy.<_<
You're good just giving you ####. However after your list....Feel free to ignore my list. I didn't realize things had moved on to 1984 until now. Been a bit busy.

Easily, one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
A one is the highest rating I could have given this movie, considering zero and negative numbers are not allowed. Pee yew, pointless mess of a movie with a lot of wasted b-list actors who have done better work, written and directed by some guy with the mentality of a twelve year old who smirks and giggles at stupid puns, and poop and fart jokes. For example, Gene Stapelton's (Ding-Bat from All in the Family) character telling Marilu Henner's character that she "swings both ways" sexually, was a cheap attempt at humor indicative of the general lameness of the movie... You want good, cheeky humor? Rent Animal House, American Pie (part one only), Old School or Office Space.

I watched it for the first time for this poll, and oh man is it a bad movie.Yeah, a lot of these are pretty awful movies. I include Purple Rain in that statement even though I gave it points.
That there is one of the most wrongheaded reviews you've highlighted in all of these various years. Nice work.#15 77pts

Tripe
I had to sit through this video- of a concert by the title group recently. I can't see what all the fuss about this group was. The vocals are lame, their playing is amateurish and they have no stage persona at all. How can a good director like Demme squander his talents on an extended MTV style video like this? As you probably have guessed by now, I do not like this group. As a matter of fact, I HATE them. Yet for some reason, the music critics just loved them. I remember them fawning over them in the 1980s. I just didn't get it then just as I can't get it now. Music is highly unoriginal and seemed to rehash almost everything pop music threw at us then. The front man David Byrne has just about as much charisma as a faceless musician on a "Muzak" recording session, that is if real artists actually did these recordings at all. Not worth your time. In plain English, this film sucks.I really do not like to use vulgar langusage on my reviews, but I could not think of a better word to describe this garbage. Zero stars.
STOP MAKING SENSE

Amazingly, they let him make another film. Well, no so amazing given how much money this one made, but still.I watched it for the first time for this poll, and oh man is it a bad movie.
I gave it points cause I love the music in it, and I love seeing Prince do his dance moves. He was sexy and mysterious. I find him intriguing, even if it is on the silver screen doing bad acting. The movie has its place in pop culture. In 1984, he had the #1 single, album, and movie. The world was raining purple.Only reason I gave Purple Rain points was The Time.
I used a similar philosophy to throw some points to "The Woman in Red"Only reason I gave Purple Rain points was The Time.
I have to admit that this movie really did become outdated and it's extremely weird that a form of rape is celebrated as a victory for our "heroes".#19 67pts

Nerdiness used as an excuse for misogyny
The 1980s were different times in terms of gender politics, but even by 80s standards, this film is horribly misogynistic. In it a group of college men put video cameras into a women's sorority house and sit around watching the footage all night, celebrating each time they see a female student's breasts or snatch. It gets worse. In order to win a college competition, they sell photographs of one of the women topless. It gets worse. One of the men tricks this same woman into having sex with him by dressing in the costume her boyfriend is wearing. This rape, is not simply treated comedically (like the other sexism), but the victim enjoys it so much she ditches her boyfriend and decides to go out with her attacker. The men involved in all these events are the heroes of the film. As nerds, the film positions them as the victims of discrimination and harassment from the jocks. As viewers, we are clearly invoked to desire and enjoy their revenge against their oppressors. Yet, their most extreme acts of revenge are enacted against the women. Women who are given little or no characterisation. These nerd heroes are mostly white and middle-class, yet they are constructed like an oppressed ethnicity. The fraternity they join is all black until they open their chapter. The climax of the film is a speech in which the central nerd declares 'I'm a nerd, and I'm here tonight to stand up for the rights of other nerds. I mean uh, all our lives we've been laughed at and made to feel inferior. ... Why? Because we're smart? Because we look different? Well, we're not. I'm a nerd, and uh, I'm pretty proud of it.' This is nerd identity politics, which puts their experiences on a level with groups who unlike nerds have the weight of social structures against them (women, African Americans, LGBTQI etc). This positioning serves in the film as a cover for misogyny.
REVENGE OF THE NERDS
I took a film course in college about foreign filmmakers movies about America. Dont remember the whole curriculum and if this was on it, but it was really interesting seeing such distinct views of America from outsiders' POV.Finishing up today. I just put in Paris, Texas and the first thing that took me by surprise is that it's a foreign produced film with a German director. Did not see that coming for a movie presumambly about smalltown rural Texas. The DVD I rented needs restoration- it isn't the Criterion version- but the color and and scenery jumps off the screen- about as oversaturated as I can remeber ever seeing. It is strikong.
Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes.i feel sorry for any of you who commented on how great it was. you lead very sad lived indeed. this movie makes me want to commit suicide.
That is an interesting once since Hitch set so many of his movies in America that I sometimes forget he's not American. Also, in his films, I don't notice much of a difference in how he handles Americans and Brits. Even though it is set in Austria, The Third Man's central character is American and it is a pretty scathing take on America's bumbling naivete.I took a film course in college about foreign filmmakers movies about America. Iirc, strozcek, Atlantic City, north by northwest... dammit...wish I kept the curriculum- saw a lot of good films in that.
That review was sadly not off base.I have to admit that this movie really did become outdated and it's extremely weird that a form of rape is celebrated as a victory for our "heroes".
I should point out- the outsiders view wasn't really showing the faults of America or Americans as much as painting the picture in a way not seen so much from natives. their perspective as outsiders allowed them distinct viewpoints...or at least, that was the point of the class. That is an interesting once since Hitch set so many of his movies in America that I sometimes forget he's not American. In watching Paris, I am not sure that I got any special examination of America. I definitely got a reverence for the size, scale and matching ambition of the country as well as a clear love for American technicolor movies- especially westerns like Shane and The Searchers. I will have to check out Stroczek. Everything I have seen from Herzog so far has been really special.I should point out- the outsiders view wasn't really showing the faults of America or Americans as much as painting the picture in a way not seen so much from natives. their perspective as outsiders allowed them distinct viewpoints...or at least, that was the point of the class.
Ntnw i think was picked because it covered so much ground showing the country.
Strozcek is the one that really got under my skin, but I haven't seen it since and only remember a scene or two.

It didn't have to be like that. But the Pi's drew first blood sending pigs into the Lambda's bash.I have to admit that this movie really did become outdated and it's extremely weird that a form of rape is celebrated as a victory for our "heroes".
