FFA Movie Poll - 2007 Lists due 8/12 (1 Viewer)

Oh, I forgot about that Joe Strummer movie.  That was a good one.

Thinking about firing up Hot Fuzz right now.

fwiw, hot fuzz didn't do that much for me. I like their stuff ok, shaun of the dead was my favorite, but felt like they never elevate.

the joe strummer movie... actually felt like it wasn't the best doc/movie. just loved the source material and learning waaaaay more about him.

I agree - liked it because I found him so fascinating.

The Strummer documentary was excellent.  I loved the way they staged the interviews and think Joe probably would have as well.

I watched "London Town" the fictionalized story of Strummer and a teenage fan that came out a couple of years ago.  The film's heart was in the right place but it made Strummer into a punk version of the Magical Negro character.  Jonathan Rhys-Meyers wasn't terrible but he wasn't quite right for the part either.

I have "This Is England" as a 2006 film.

Control is another not great film (I much prefer 24 Hour Party people about overlapping subject) that I ranked here. I'm a huge Joy Division fan going back to when I was a kid- so I loved getting the Ian Curtis story...in b/w even.

I thought about putting Control in my list here as I love Joy Division/New Order, but the movie itself just wasn't that memorable. Also because 24 Hour Party People is one of my all time favorite movies and Control just makes me want to watch that one instead.

@krista4 - did you like The Orphanage?
   It was terrific.  It felt almost like more of a drama/suspense movie to me than a horror movie, which is a good tribute to how well it was done.  The pain of loss, the different approaches to loss of the mother and father - just really well executed.  But the "horror" elements were perfectly done as well, as the creepiness and feelings of dread were strong without having a bunch of overt "jump out and scare you" moments.  And that lead performance...wow.  She was incredible.  The only bit I didn't like was the ending, but the rest was so good that didn't ruin it at all for me.

Also just watched Hot Fuzz, which I found brilliant and hilarious.  Floppo, even setting aside all that, how could you not like a movie with that soundtrack?

:lmao:

I was watching by myself and laughing like a crazy person.  For some reason the parts with the swan (esp. at the end) really had me rolling.*  I don't know - I guess their stuff just clicks with my sense of humo(u)r.

*And the "yarp...yarp...narp?" part.

Why isn't @Ilov80s doing a list? :kicksrock:

I decided to limit my list to these 13 standouts in order to give them more points.  I apologize to the following films that were deserving of points:  Teeth, The Savages, Taxi to the Dark Side, Sunshine, Michael Clayton, Zodiac, Assassination…, Into the Wild, Eastern Promises, Away from Her, Grace is Gone.

I also wanted to watch Honeydripper, Mongol, and The Mist but ran out of time.

For only the second time (first was Godfather), I singled out one movie as being above the others.  In a year that had what I thought were phenomenal films like There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men, I think The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was even more incredible.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - 30 points

There Will Be Blood - 25 points

No Country for Old Men - 25 points

12 points for each of the following:

Sweeney Todd

The Orphanage

Once

Hot Fuzz

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead

Gone Baby Gone

Persepolis

The King of Kong

The Counterfeiters

Lars and the Real Girl

I am just starting the math.  :bag:

Sent message to eephus about Children of Men, and 3 others about 300 being ruled as a 2006 movie as well.

@krista4  fear not, I sent my list last night

Great (15)

No Country for Old Men

The Bourne Ultimatum

3:10 To Yuma

Best scene?

I’m going with the coin toss in the gas station in No Country.
This will be a good discussion for the day and a way to stall.

I have the ones I can enter in done, but waiting on @Eephus, @Todem, @Yankee23Fan  to see what the adjustments are to finalize this thing.  I am having a "dude's day" with my son, so the countdown won't start until tonight, and might have to go into tomorrow morning depending on how many make the countdown.

Favorite scenes:
Milkshake scene, the coin flip at the gas station in No Country, the basement scene in Zodiac and the McLovin fake ID scene.

Good one.  So ####in' tense.

I assume you are talking about when McLovin' gets knocked out buying beer and the cops come in?

Can some one explain this to me? Did I miss something earlier in the movie that would make "I drink your milkshake" significant?
Oil analogy? He drills for oil for a living and Paul Dano cynically wants in on it because it's on his property. There are property fights, and personality clashes and the ultimate result is Dano getting beaten to death while DDL stands over him telling him he's taking the oil?

It was the ultimate beatdown b/c Eli was finally coming around to basically grovel for the money at the end and wanted Plainview to take the lease and drill for the oil.  The point of the milkshake was to tell him that his brother told him long ago about the oil, he had bought up all the property around him, and already sucked that oil dry by drilling into it from the surrounding properties.  Hence the you have a milkshake and I have a long straw dialogue.
