the image of this makes me weep....So I watched Sweeney Todd last night, and I am a little grumpy this morning.
I can't get "Not While I'm Around" out of my head, and I've been singing it to my daughter all morning.

First working list is below. And I'm stretching to give some of these any points. I didn't realize how much I just didn't love a lot here until I had to start giving it points.KarmaPolice said:Your definition of fun and mine must be different. I am getting pissed and I think this year's countdown is going to break my brain.
Curious to see your list or which ones specifically you've seen and hated.
Mr krista the chef says this is one of the best food movies out there.Speaking of cartoons, there hasn't been a mention of Ratatouille yet that I've seen. Is that one people forgot about, or just didn't like? It's one of the movies in the run of Pixar movies that critics seem to fawn over with this, Wall-E, and UP. I prefer other Pixars over those(Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Incredibles) , but I watched the hell out of Ratatouille with my son and still do really like it.
I think it's why I was so disappointed in last year's movies. 1997 is my vote for best of the 90s, we know my feelings on 2007, and 1987 was fantastic as well. Then we get to last year and the popular fish sex movie and the hateful 3 Billboards, and my love for years ending in 7 was stopped.
@krista4Last year was one of my favorite movie years in ages.
Braces?Honorable mention. Teeth. It's a movie about a teen who has teeth in her hoo-haa. Recommended.
Mist itI should have thrown some points at The Mist.
Who doesn't like Marcia Gay Harden acting like a harpie?
It's pretty decent. Paul Schrader's script swings for the fences and ends up somewhere on the warning track. The performances from Pryor, Keitel and especially Yaphet Kotto are excellent.Sorry in advance for the 1978 mention in here, but I noticed "Blue Collar" is airing on Starz/Encore on Saturday morning for anyone looking to get a head start there. I haven't seen it yet, but set to record (was just reading some good reviews on it).
It's a man's man movie. Is 300 the one with all the shiny mostly-naked guys? Might be time for me to watch that. For research, of course.
A bit of both. My favorite movie of the year was Call Me By Your Name, so that's one difference. And I loved not only those you did but also Dunkirk, Get Out (the best movie of the year), I Tonya, Shape of Water, Three Billboards, Big Sick. The Post was also shockingly good, as was the Churchill one the name of which I'm forgetting. I enjoyed The Disaster Artist a lot. Didn't see Mudbound or Ghost Story; hated Mother!@krista4
Did you love the ones I listed a lot more that I listed, or were there others that you really loved that I might not have seen? I will admit that I haven't gone too deep into research and the Oscars aren't the end all be all, but too many of the top critical movies for me were duds. I loved Lady Bird and Phantom Thread, and really liked Dunkirk, Get Out, I Tonya and a few others, but there were too many that I really didn't like much at all: Shape of Water, 3 Billboards, Big Sick, mother!, Ghost Story, Disaster Artist, and a few others. A few I haven't seen are Call Me By Your Name, The Post, Mudbound.
We disagree on a main 5-6, but I haven't seen any of the bolded, so I definitely need to dig a bit deeper to call it a down year, and I will see if I can snag any of these through the library.A bit of both. Then when you sprinkle in some more you haven't mentioned but that I thought were fabulous, like The Florida Project, Step, Loving Vincent, A Fantastic Woman, Faces Places, Icarus, Victoria & Abdul, The Hero, Lady Macbeth, The Square, Columbus, Lucky, The Lost City of Z, and others I'm forgetting, I found it a great year. I also particularly loved the documentary shorts and the live-action shorts last year. Hell, I even liked The Last Jedi, Molly's Game and Wonder Woman, too.
Holy schnikies!! I got KP to see what a musical can be. that's all the points i'll ever need *drops mike*Besides just getting a couple songs stuck in my head, I really did enjoy Sweeney Todd quite a bit. I am not sure where I am going to go with the points, as this is such a dense year for me, but this will be one that is in contention. That is saying something since I am pretty tight with the points for movies I only watched for the first time for these polls, and it's in a genre I generally avoid like the plague.
I will fully admit to having 0 life. You folks sure watch a lot of movies

Yeah, no kids= lots of free time. Being a teacher with no kids= almost too much free timekrista4 said:I will fully admit to having 0 kids.
Yep, 1978 -- that is what KP posted. Is 1978 the year we're doing after this?
Good work. I feel like Some Like It Hot and 12 Angry Men got a big % of votes but the 50s years didn't have a lot of votes and being over 5 years, the votes were more likely to be spread out. As if it matters, but I still feel like when KP posts the top movies by year, he should include the 5 movies from 55-59 to include each year.So.... I got bored for 30 minutes. The discussion of the 500 club maybe not being fair given that we've lost enough voters to make the 500 number be harder to hit. In looking at the lists, that might ultimately be true, although I would argue that given who the 500 club is, they are just way better movies than the ones that didn't it, no matter the number of voters.
So, I ran the 400 club. Here it is.
YEAR MOVIE SCORE
55-59 NONE
1971 Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory 420
1971 A Clockwork Orange 400

That is a good ### ideaI think NV (or somebody else) should start randomizong years and doing this for albums.
There was something similar a few years ago for albums, but it was a straight up poll versus the point assignments. It was not randomized though — went sequentially by year, starting around 1950 or so.I think NV (or somebody else) should start randomizong years and doing this for albums.
These polls are a lot of work and I very much commend you for them doing multiple times a calendar year.I think NV (or somebody else) should start randomizong years and doing this for albums.
Also, even with the year end ones, I get pissy if not enough people send in listsThese polls are a lot of work and I very much commend you for them doing multiple times a calendar year.
I would like to do it for decades or something similar but I can't imagine doing it every couple weeks like you have been doing.
Serious businessAlso, even with the year end ones, I get pissy if not enough people send in lists![]()
I hear you there. Also, even with the year end ones, I get pissy if not enough people send in lists![]()
Very possible. They might be more populist lists than finger on the pulse lists but that's fine...I hear you there.
Just curious if like these, you'd get more for the years of our youth. I get the feeling in the FFA that us old farts keep up with new music less than movies/tv
#fart4musicI hear you there.

@shuke - and everybody else:shuke said:Is 300 2006 or 2007?
Going have to adjust my list for you now. I own this and love it! How did I miss that!!! Great horror movie. 2007 is truly the year of horror for me. I think most of my films are in the horror genre for 2007. The Mist was also great....but that ending was brutal for me....just brutal. I mean that in a tragic way. Breaks my heart big time.I didn't see @Todem or other horror fans mention it, but I was searching around finally in horror movies for the year and saw that another of my favorite movies of this time frame came out in 2007 - Trick 'R Treat. This one is a staple for me around Halloween time, and is just a blast to watch. I loved the throw back to Creepshow and other episodic movies like that and how some of the stories tie in. It's getting to the point where I don't have enough points.
Great year for dramas, and great year for horror. As mentioned, [rec], The Orphanage, Teeth, and Trick 'R Treat would be at the top for me. On the extreme horror side of things a couple foreign movies in Frontier(s) and Inside were damn good as well, though not for the weak stomached. I also liked what they did with The Mist and have a blast with that movie, especially the ending. For found footage, I really liked Paranormal Activity, and there were some decent sequels in 28 Weeks Later, Saw 4, and Hostel 2. Sorry by_the_sea, but in no world is AVP: Requiem even an "ok" movie.![]()
