FFA Movie Poll - 2007 Lists due 8/12 (1 Viewer)

So I watched Sweeney Todd last night, and I am a little grumpy this morning.

I can't get "Not While I'm Around" out of my head, and I've been singing it to my daughter all morning.

Started watching Eastern Promises last night.  I enjoyed History of Violence, but thought it was a bit too gratuitous at times.  Feeling the same so far on Eastern Promises.   A "have sex with this prostitute in front of me to prove you are not gay" scene feels like something even a porno writer would tell the director, "really, are you sure that's what you want?  I can come up with something a bit more original."  But I guess Cronenberg movies are what they are at this point.

I recommended its sequel in the 2009 thread but Brazilian cop movie "Elite Squad (Tropa de Elite)" is eligible this year.  There's a HD stream on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyOf2ru7AAk

It's a terrific action movie with some social commentary thrown in.  The story focuses on three members of a special unit of the Rio de Janeiro police force: a Captain who is growing weary of the stress and two new recruits.  Elite Squad uses handheld cameras and a kinetic editing style similar to many modern action films but the gritty settings in the favelas sets it apart.  The director Jose Padilha and star Wagner Moura went on to work on season 1 of the Netflix series Narcos.

ETA: I'm curious about a Brazilian's thoughts about this one  @Abrantes

Your definition of fun and mine must be different.  I am getting pissed and I think this year's countdown is going to break my brain.

Curious to see your list or which ones specifically you've seen and hated.
First working list is below.  And I'm stretching to give some of these any points.  I didn't realize how much I just didn't love a lot here until I had to start giving it points.

Ratatoullie             25

American Gangster 25

Order of the Phoenix  20

Bourne Ultimatum    20

Juno                        15

Live Free or Die Hard   15

Charlie Wilson's War    15

Transformers                   5

National Treasure: Book of Secrets  5

300                                     5

Across the Universe           5

Transformers was an awful movie but it gets nostalgia points from me and Megan Fox deserves at least 4 on her own; Book of Secrets was stupid from start to finish but I'm a sucker for American history type things like that and they could make 40 of those movies and I would still spend money to watch them.  And most of the dramas just didn't grab me this year.

Speaking of cartoons, there hasn't been a mention of Ratatouille yet that I've seen.   Is that one people forgot about, or just didn't like?   It's one of the movies in the run of Pixar movies that critics seem to fawn over with this, Wall-E, and UP.   I prefer other Pixars over those(Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Incredibles) , but I watched the hell out of Ratatouille with my son and still do really like it.
Mr krista the chef says this is one of the best food movies out there.  He’s watched it multiple times.

I think it's why I was so disappointed in last year's movies.  1997 is my vote for best of the 90s, we know my feelings on 2007, and 1987 was fantastic as well.   Then we get to last year and the popular fish sex movie and the hateful 3 Billboards, and my love for years ending in 7 was stopped.
  Last year was one of my favorite movie years in ages.

Is 300 the one with all the shiny mostly-naked guys?  Might be time for me to watch that.  For research, of course.

@krista4

Did you love the ones I listed a lot more that I listed, or were there others that you really loved that I might not have seen?  I will admit that I haven't gone too deep into research and the Oscars aren't the end all be all, but too many of the top critical movies for me were duds.  I loved Lady Bird and Phantom Thread, and really liked Dunkirk, Get Out, I Tonya and a few others, but there were too many that I really didn't like much at all:  Shape of Water, 3 Billboards, Big Sick, mother!, Ghost Story, Disaster Artist,  and a few others.    A few I haven't seen are Call Me By Your Name, The Post, Mudbound.

I noticed "Encounters at the End of the World" debuted at a 2007 festival (even though not released in theatres until 2008, but I think we are going by the earlier date). I haven't seen that one mentioned yet -- Herzog in Antarctica.

Zodiac   -   30  -  One of my all time favorite movies.  It hits on so many levels for me.  Mystery, horror, San Francisco period piece, just great overall.  And that opening sequence set to Hurdy Gurdy Man!

Paranormal Activity   -   30  -  There aren't too many great found footage movies, but this is one of them IMO.  What really got me with this one was that my bedroom layout is very similar to the one in the movie.  This one stuck with me for a few days as a result.

[REC]   -   30  -  Another great found footage horror film, this one is from Spain and not as well known as a result.  Has one of the best endings in the genre.  Genuinely terrifying.

Superbad   -   20

I am Legend   -   20

No Country for Old Men   -   20 - Just recently watched this for this poll and yes, it is great.

The Orphanage   -   15

The Mist   -   15  -  Very well executed horror movie based on the Stephen King story.

Ratatouile   -   10

Black Snake Moan   -   10  -  The movie is not very good, but I have a huge celeb crush on Christina Ricci and this movie has her playing a sex-starved, half naked chick who is in chains for most of it.  So it makes the list.

Honorable mention.  Teeth.  It's a movie about a teen who has teeth in her hoo-haa.  Recommended.

Sorry in advance for the 1978 mention in here, but I noticed "Blue Collar" is airing on Starz/Encore on Saturday morning for anyone looking to get a head start there.  I haven't seen it yet, but set to record (was just reading some good reviews on it).

It's pretty decent.  Paul Schrader's script swings for the fences and ends up somewhere on the warning track.  The performances from Pryor, Keitel and especially Yaphet Kotto are excellent.

Besides just getting a couple songs stuck in my head, I really did enjoy Sweeney Todd quite a bit.   I am not sure where I am going to go with the points, as this is such a dense year for me, but this will be one that is in contention. That is saying something since I am pretty tight with the points for movies I only watched for the first time for these polls, and it's in a genre I generally avoid like the plague.

Not sure if I am in the right head space for a tear jerker, so I might skip Grace is Gone tonight and do a re-watch of The Orphanage, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, or The Lookout.

A bit of both.  My favorite movie of the year was Call Me By Your Name, so that's one difference.  And I loved not only those you did but also Dunkirk, Get Out (the best movie of the year), I Tonya, Shape of Water, Three Billboards, Big Sick.  The Post was also shockingly good, as was the Churchill one the name of which I'm forgetting.  I enjoyed The Disaster Artist a lot.  Didn't see Mudbound or Ghost Story; hated Mother!

Then when you sprinkle in some more you haven't mentioned but that I thought were fabulous, like The Florida Project, Step, Loving Vincent, A Fantastic Woman, Faces Places, Icarus, Victoria & Abdul, The Hero, Lady Macbeth, The Square, Columbus, Lucky, The Lost City of Z, and others I'm forgetting, I found it a great year.  I also particularly loved the documentary shorts and the live-action shorts last year.  Hell, I even liked The Last Jedi, Molly's Game and Wonder Woman, too.

We disagree on a main 5-6, but I haven't seen any of the bolded, so I definitely need to dig a bit deeper to call it a down year, and I will see if I can snag any of these through the library.

I did like some of the more "fun" ones of the year like Logan, Spider-man: Homecoming, but that won't tip a year for me like a great group of dramas will.    I warmed up a lot to Get Out after a couple watches, but still think it suffers in the final act.  The big thig holding me back so far was the either dislike for (Shape of Water, mother, Three Billboards) or flat out hate (Ghost Story)  a decent % of the more critically acclaimed movies.  I also was in the didn't like camp for Wonder Woman and Jedi.

Holy schnikies!! I got KP to see what a musical can be. that's all the points i'll ever need *drops mike*

So.... I got bored for 30 minutes.  The discussion of the 500 club maybe not being fair given that we've lost enough voters to make the 500 number be harder to hit.  In looking at the lists, that might ultimately be true, although I would argue that given who the 500 club is, they are just way better movies than the ones that didn't it, no matter the number of voters.

So, I ran the 400 club.  Here it is.

YEAR                  MOVIE                                                  SCORE

55-59                  NONE

1971                   Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory     420

1971                    A Clockwork Orange                               400

1974                    Godfather II                                             711

1974                    Chinatown                                              565

1974                    Blazing Saddles                                     526

1974                    Young Frankenstein                               491

1982                    Blade Runner                                         693

1982                    Fast Times at Ridgemont High               595

1982                     The Thing                                               469

1982                     E.T.                                                        430

1982                   Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan               414

1984                   NONE

1989                   NONE

1992                   Reservoir Dogs                                         405

1999                   Fight Club                                                 615

1999                  The Matrix                                                 606

1999                  Office Space                                              456

2005                  NONE

2010                  NONE

An issue I see with the 500 club is that it doesn't even take into account which movies an individual poster likes best.  For instance, in the 1984 list, I didn't have much time to consider it so only did two tiers, with the five in my first tier getting 29 points.  Probably none of those movies would have received 29 points in any other year, as I usually have the full 20 movies to include and more tiers among which I allocate points.

And in a strong year, necessarily you're going to have more movies where you want to give higher points, thereby penalizing the great movies that came out in top-heavy years and rewarding those that came out in relatively weak years.  I find the 500 point club nearly meaningless.

It's meaningless, but it's still fun.

Like I suggested, I wonder if it should have been something like a list of movies that received votes in 1/2 the lists, and averaged 20pts+, or something like that.  Not sure if it would change much, but I know that would have allowed Spinal Tap and Terminator in the club from 1984.

Make it a percentage of total votes and have there be some sort of reasonable threshold.

Like Major league got 24% of the total votes for 1989!"

Good work. I feel like Some Like It Hot and 12 Angry Men got a big % of votes but the 50s years didn't have a lot of votes and being over 5 years, the votes were more likely to be spread out. As if it matters, but I still feel like when KP posts the top movies by year, he should include the 5 movies from 55-59 to include each year.

I think NV (or somebody else) should start randomizong years and doing this for albums.
There was something similar a few years ago for albums, but it was a straight up poll versus the point assignments. It was not randomized though — went sequentially by year, starting around 1950 or so.

I can’t find in search, so it may have been long enough ago to be archived by now. I could be making that up — but I vaguely remember downloading some stuff like Sketches of Spain and Innervisions based on those polls.

These polls are a lot of work and I very much commend you for them doing multiple times a calendar year.

I would like to do it for decades or something similar but I can't imagine doing it every couple weeks like you have been doing.

Also, even with the year end ones, I get pissy if not enough people send in lists

I hear you there.

Just curious if like these, you'd get more for the years of our youth.  I get the feeling in the FFA that us old farts keep up with new music less than movies/tv
Very possible. They might be more populist lists than finger on the pulse lists but that's fine...

Music :nerd:

I didn't see @Todem or other horror fans mention it, but I was searching around finally in horror movies for the year and saw that another of my favorite movies of this time frame came out in 2007 - Trick 'R Treat.    This one is a staple for me around Halloween time, and is just a blast to watch.  I loved the throw back to Creepshow and other episodic movies like that and how some of the stories tie in.   It's getting to the point where I don't have enough points.

Great year for dramas, and great year for horror.  As mentioned, [rec], The Orphanage, Teeth, and Trick 'R Treat would be at the top for me.  On the extreme horror side of things a couple foreign movies in Frontier(s) and Inside were damn good as well, though not for the weak stomached.   I also liked what they did with The Mist and have a blast with that movie, especially the ending.  For found footage, I really liked Paranormal Activity, and there were some decent sequels in 28 Weeks Later, Saw 4, and Hostel 2.     Sorry by_the_sea, but in no world is AVP: Requiem even an "ok" movie.  ;)

Going have to adjust my list for you now. I own this and love it! How did I miss that!!! Great horror movie. 2007 is truly the year of horror for me. I think most of my films are in the horror genre for 2007. The Mist was also great....but that ending was brutal for me....just brutal. I mean that in a tragic way. Breaks my heart big time.
