FFA Official Horror Movie Thread (1 Viewer)

I was looking for a book or two on horror movies, and I stumbled upon THIS on Amazon, and thought of y'all. I am getting that - it might be fun for next year. Hell, I will just post the suggestions/questions here when I get the book.

I also had to order Monsters on the Couch.
This would be something fun to do next year. The horror genre is kind of limited, and something like this would help to freshen things up.

100%. Nothing else, I can post them and if they are mostly dumb we have time to tweak the suggestions to our liking as well.

16th - The Strange Thing About the Johnsons (on YouTube). This is a short film by Ari Aster, the director of Hereditary and Midsommar. Man, is this a twisted movie. Not so much for anything overtly graphic but the ideas here are thoroughly icky. There are scares but its the subject matter that makes one's skin crawl. Very well done and it will stay with you, for better or worse. Grade B
It's made by the same guy who made Hereditary and Midsommar, but this one is really twisted this time? Okay, I guess I should check this out.

[watches trailer]

Oh FFS I'm totally watching this but I'll need to shower afterward.
Ari Aster has to be some sort of all-time master of creating "dread." I've only ever seen these three films of his, but they all share that primal "I don't want to see this but I can't look away" quality and they all just nail it.

None of this is "fun" horror. This is Greek tragedy horror.

Tonight it's Carrie. I've only actually this once before and I forgot how weird the opening soft core porn locker room scene into tampon period blood thing is. It's weirdddd.

Yeah the slo-mo boobies goes on a bit long. DePalma being DePalma. It's still an all timer for me, mostly based on the performances.
I don't think there is a single bra worn in this entire movie lol

Sissy is so perfect in this. It's a tough role to sell being awkward and unpopular but also being super cute and lovable. She's gorgeous in this movie and so sweet. There's another version of this movie where things work out and there's a happy ending.

I made it through about 20 minutes of Sleep. Walk. Kill. (Vudu free). IMDB 6.1 and I have no idea how it's that high. It's a complete dud. The humor isn't bad, but what a terribly made movie. Sound, setting, actors - it just looked like it was made for $500 with someone's friends. I know that can work (Clerks, Battery), but not here - oof.

Of course it's not scary at all but I just did my annual viewing of Paranorman.

I love everything about the movie. When Norman finally confronts Agatha it's actually quite intense.

Last night I ripped off The Prowler and The Strangers. Strangers was a rewatch, but it's so good and thought it might creep out the wife a bit. The Prowler had some good stuff and ideas, but the kills were mostly the same and few of them. Still a better movie than most of the slashers that were fired off around that time, so if anybody likes the subgenre and haven't seen it, it's worth a look IMO. I have to recount, I might actually be up to 31 already.

ETA: Nope, I'm at 28.
LOL. Nope, I was at 30. I forgot Battle Royale and Dr. X.

@Ilov80s - I couldn't make it through Skinamarink. I couldn't imagine being a critic and having to get through that one in a theater without warning what it was. I got through about 25mins then hit the FF to see if anything else happened or it seemed to shift at all. Yep, it just got weirder. I will always give kudos to people trying weird crap, but it wasn't for me last night.

I also attempted another that I had to tap out from. Video Violence was one that was on the podcast of all-nighters, but wow - I think it was made for $2. I couldn't do it, and I am surprised they have to dip that deep into the unknowns for the pod. I couldn't recommend that with a straight face, or maybe I missed him talking about how low the budget was.

I finally stopped trying to be weird, and landed on Haunt and Dashcam for the night. I really liked Haunt. Scary idea, scary monsters, great final girl. Nothing groundbreaking, but very entertaining. 0% chance I even made it past the first clown at the entrance. Dashcam had a couple of my harder laughs of the month, and the biggest scare. How is it possible I got that out of the movie, but I'm not sure if I even liked the movie overall? Absolutely obnoxious lead character that I occasionally found very funny but over time got old. Like that drunk friend who is funny for about 20mins because they say dumb ****, but after that you go in avoid mode. Then the movie is all loud noises and jump scares. Again, effective in short bursts (and one got me big time), but after that it becomes annoying. This one was by the same director as Host.

That puts me at 33, but I'm having too much fun to stop watching the genre for the month. I was staring at my list of what I watched and had some thoughts - winners and losers + favorite watches.

Winners:

The 70s - love the grittiness and scariness of this decade. What you see more here is great directors dabbling in horror and great actors. It feels like we are getting back to that a little bit now with a24 movies and others.
Found Footage movies - I saw a lot of inventiveness from this subgenre over the month and a lot of my favorite watches were from here. However, I don't think I like this trend of movies like Dashcam and Deadstream where we have 1 lead and the shtick of also seeing the comments on the screen. I get why it's going that direction, but I'm too old for that and hope it doesn't tilt too much in that direction.

Losers:

The 80s - I'm not claiming there aren't gems but some of the stuff I would list at the top (The Shining, The Thing) are at the start of the decade and feel a bit more 70s. When I revisit and try to take the nostalgia goggles off, I am mostly disappointed in the movies I watch and am more just laughing along with the cheesiness. It feels like there is a stretch of years from about '83 - late 90s that are largely devoid of great horror movies. Ironically that is all the crap I was watching and made me love the genre.
Remakes/Sequels - I know, big shocker here, but I have watched some truly awful movies from here - Children of the Corn topping them all. Just terrible all around.

My favorite new movies from the month were: Haunt, Haxan, Talk to Me, Censor, The Prowler, and Gojiam: Haunted Asylum. I want to watch Deastream again. I thought it was funny but I might like it more knowing how Evil Dead it gets at the end, and after watching Dashcam I was thinking about how it did a better job at building tension and not relying so much on jumps. Favorite rewatches were Black Christmas, Creep, and The Invitation.

Absolutely. That's what elevates most horror movies - actually caring about the characters and NOT wanting to see them die. I love that you can see Tommy letting his guard down and seems to be just as smitten by Carrie as I am. This is why Halloween was great and why most 80s slashers aren't - the kids were fodder and the bad guys were who people started cheering for.

Of course it's not scary at all but I just did my annual viewing of Paranorman.

I just watched it tonight for the first time. Fun movie, there were a fair number of jokes snuck in there.

I checked out Disturbing Behavior (1998 horror/Sci-fi) last night. Fun flick. It was obviously trimmed to oblivion by the studio (82 minute run time)...there's a very interesting story introduced, and it's worth watching, but add 15-20 minutes of additional back story and character development, and it could've been top tier.

Wife and I watched Terrifier and Terrfier 2 back to back nights.

Art The Clown is seriously insane. We enjoyed the heck outta these two movies. And the sequel is better than the original.
We watched the first one a while back and I have the second on my list for this month. Glad to hear you think it's better.
All hallows eve and the 9th circle are Art the clown movies

and Terrifier 3 comes out 2024

I have All Hallows Eve….never seen the 9th circle.

And looking forward to Terrifier 3!

Watched the first 3.5 episodes of Fall of the House of Usher last night. I like it so far. The Ushers sound like the Sacklers so it's fun watching them die in strange Poe based ways. Also love all the references to Poe's works.

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988 - W. Craven)
Jessabelle (2014 - K. Greutert)
White Zombie (1932 - V. Halperin)

I watched a trio of films involving Voodoo. I'm looking for more from this sub-genre if anybody has any recommendations.

The Serpent and the Rainbow wasn't as good as I remembered from the 80s. The ambitious mix of fact, fiction, folklore and politics wasn't entirely successful. As a horror film, it was a pretty restrained effort from Wes Craven with some haunting images but not a lot of frights. That said, it was the best of the three Voodoo movies I saw. Zakes Mokae made a memorable villain as a Tonton Macoute/Voodoo master.

Jessabelle starred Sarah Snook as a wheelchair bound woman trapped in a house haunted by spirits. It took a while for me to stop seeing Snook as Shiv Roy with a Southern accent but she carried the film. The story was a hodgepodge of plot devices that raised more questions than it provided answers for. The director Kevin Greutert is a veteran of the Saw franchise (as a editor and director) so there were some suspenseful scenes and gratuitous shocks. I was mostly entertained but I think there was a better movie in there somewhere.

White Zombie was obviously dated but had some creepy moments mainly due to the presence of Bela Lugosi. It was never explained why or how Lugosi's character ended up as the lord of the undead in Haiti of all places but he managed to be convincing. As the cast became zombies, the movie played more and more like a silent film which improved things for me up until a silly rushed ending.

I think I have an idea for next Halloween, even for people who can't or don't want to do 31 in a month. I think it needs to be general enough that people can be creative and curate their own watchlist, but specific enough to make so people are watching new stuff.

How about something like: 5 categories with 6 choices in each. If you want to do all + 1 wildcard/watch a favorite for the 31, cool. Only have time for 21 movies? just pick 4 of the 5 for each category. Only have time for 11? Take 2 of the 5.

I got the book, but it was really basic. "watch a werewolf movie" or "horror sequel" type of stuff. There were some good ideas though and it got by big brain cooking, so I am going to whip something up and present it in a few days and see if people like the idea.

We could do mad31 but for horror movies. So, like every other day in October, we get a playlist of 50+ horror movies to watch. Everyone should be able to keep up, right?

18th - Torso (on Prime). Grade C+
19th - Prince of Darkness (on Peacock). Grade C

20th - Color out of Space (on Prime). I had never heard of this and the wife stumbled upon it and wanted to see it. My first alienesque (lower case A) film on this list and it's apparently based on works by Lovecraft, which become obvious as it develops. I liked how it established the central characters and the initial setup, but it got a little too out there for me by the end, which isn't out of the ordinary for a Nicolas Cage movie. If you're a Lovecraft fan, you're likely to enjoy this more than I did. Grade C+

21st - Cobweb (on Hulu) - Conversely, I really liked this one, more than most critics have. I didn't mind this one taking its time to establish the characters and the setting, and then I cared so much about the main character that when things began to unfold, I was riveted. Lizzy Caplan is always great and Homelander from The Boys was just born to be in horror films. Things unravel somewhat in the final act, but by then I was so hooked, I only gave the final grade a minor ding for that. Again, YMMV, but this was a big hit for me. Grade A-

Couldn't agree more. Especially the 70s/80s distinction. 70s horror is just head and shoulders above the stuff from the 80s, most of which is cookie-cutter. Kind of like comparing 70s rock with mid-80s pop music.

The 70s were a transitional decade for horror. The movies from the first part of the decade such as The Exorcist have a slower pace than the films that followed. The Last House on the Left and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre amped up the intensity and pushed the limits of the MPAA's R rating. The archetype for the slasher movie was established in the latter half of the 70s. I don't follow the genre enough to say it's stagnated since then but there have been a lot of sequels and reboots of franchises that began during that period.

I think found footage peaked about 5-10 years ago. I'm a huge fan of the subgenre, but there really are a lot of stinkers out there. It can be hard to find the good stuff and there hasn't been anything worthy of a list in a few years IMO.

Also, I think for next year, we should spend Aug-Sept coming up with a definitive 31 movie for 31 days list, kind of how we did the top 100 70s/80s/90s threads, but with more people. Then the list would be ready for the thread to watch and discuss during October. Is that what you already suggested? I cant remember.
