Was thinking recently about what is the most recent of the truly iconic trappings of Christmas -- movies, songs, TV programs, whatever else of pop culture. "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is a contender. One of the few instant classics added to the holiday music canon in the video/digital era of pop stars.
2.xx: "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey
(Rock era originals)

As classic as a perfectly roasted, juicy turkey and a side of fluffy, buttery mashed potatoes for a holiday dinner. My list might end being kind of basic, but when it comes to the holidays, I like the classics. It's like comfort food. Pure nostalgia.
Round 2. Bing Crosby- White Christmas
Doesn't get more classic than that.
I hate to think what he considers avant guard?Mainstream/square Xmas song?
Don't have time to look into it now, but there's a long (and original) version of this song with an extra verse ... I have always wondered if Crosby has ever done the long version? My list might end being kind of basic, but when it comes to the holidays, I like the classics. It's like comfort food. Pure nostalgia.

Yes, they were all greatI assume The Killers were the group with the annual Christmas releases that NV was talking about earlier. I also love that one, particularly as its another song that annoys my wife.
The Killers >>>>>>>>> RadioheadAlmost to the end of round 2 of a musicdraft and Radiohead hasn't been picked yet
ETA: @Kumerica up
Crosby's original version from the 1942 movie "Holiday Inn" features a duet with co-star Marjorie Reynolds. The extra verse is exclude because it wouldn't make sense in the context of the setting.Don't have time to look into it now, but there's a long (and original) version of this song with an extra verse ... I remember watching the Bing Crosby Christmas specials on TV back in the 70s. He always wore those golf sweaters.I'm going to bet against a Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town run and pick an unusual pairing and mashup that shouldn't work but is brilliant:
1.04: ""Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth" by Bing Crosby and David Bowie
(Pop Standards)
And then it got its own movie, "White Christmas". It's the best selling single of all time. It wasn't a huge success right away but was really pushed forward by the soldiers radio stations where it was requested nonstop. It's the only single to top the charts 3 different times (holidays of 45-47). Also the version we hear is the 47 re-recording because the original was copied so much that it was damaged.Crosby's original version from the 1942 movie "Holiday Inn" features a duet with co-star Marjorie Reynolds. The extra verse is exclude because it wouldn't make sense in the context of the setting.
The film also includes a blackface number that sometimes gets edited out of television broadcasts.
1.10---eephus---Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)---Darlene Love---Pop Standard (1900-1963)
Deep category but a great track.
OkWhite Christmas is such a simple song, especially without the seldom performed Beverly Hills LA section. It's just verse / verse / identical verse. There are only three or four chords and about 50 words. Berlin was an extremely prolific songwriter with over 900 published songs. It probably didn't take him an afternoon to write and has made generations of his heirs rich.
ETA: One hour clock Wednesday 10 - 8 EST. We're making good progress with a great variety of classics and deeper cuts. I just want to keep the thread on the first page.
It has been his turn since yesterday between 4 and 5 pm. Prancer told me Santa put him on the naughty list.
My sister loves the Barenaked Ladies. She still sees them when they come around on their summer tours.
Would have been my next pick.I was considering The Pogues but figured it wouldn't make it to me (or make it past simey if I skipped it here). I'm going to pick off another one of the mandatory songs here, I'm surprised this doesn't show up on the 538 list of most played Christmas songs, so maybe it's the Canadian content laws that make me hear it so often but it is my favourite version of it (maybe because it's become so ingrained?)
2.12 - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - Barenaked Ladies (f/Sarah Mclachlan)
This one is a standard at holiday gatherings on my dad's side of the family. Not all of it is biographical. Some, but not all.I've drafted this song before, but it wouldn't be a Christmas mix for me if it wasn't included.
3.01 - Merry Christmas from the Family - Robert Earl Keen (Novelty song)![]()
The link says "The uploader has not made this video available in your country". Here is one that works. What category is it?I absolutely love this song. It's a Christmas song and it's The Darkness so it's obviously cheesy as hell but it's a joyful and triumphant cheese that goes well with the holiday spirit(s).
3.02 - Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End) - The Darkness
I've been unable to watch some too, Youtube has something happening with different regions. It will be rock era original. The link says "The uploader has not made this video available in your country". Here is one that works. What category is it?
I like Donny's version best.Well I'll punt the compulsory songs yet another round at my own peril, but I gotta have his one:
3.04 "This Christmas" by Donny Hathaway
(rock-era originals)
Was tempting to take Chris Brown's cover, but decided to go with the original instead.
Just to be clear, the Chris Brown version is still eligible to be drafted by somebody else.Well I'll punt the compulsory songs yet another round at my own peril, but I gotta have his one:

Simey posted this upthread:I'll be afk for a couple hours.. skip away
You're up. Scooby picked and Zilla is AFKSimey posted this upthread:
3.05 - cos - OTC
3.06 - ilov80s - skip
3.07 - Scooby - skip
3.08 - Juddzilla
3.09 - Doug
3.10 - Eephus
...
Then cosjobs picked, and JZilla asked for a skip. Does that mean I am OTC right now? I am seeing other picks being recently made by other people, but can't tell (without round/pick numbers) whether or not the recent picks are in sequence.
