Fifteen Days/Songs of Christmas Music Mixtape Draft - Links to final mixes in post #1 (1 Viewer)

I assume The Killers were the group with the annual Christmas releases that NV was talking about earlier.  I also love that one, particularly as its another song that annoys my wife.

I never heard it until googling xmas songs this weekend. 8000000 hits. Thought everyone but me had heard it

Music snobs will hate this one, but I don't care.  The vocals on the original are transcendent and I love the melody.  One of the few instant classics added to the holiday music canon in the video/digital era of pop stars.

2.xx: "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey

(Rock era originals)

Yeah Mariah has straddled and crossed the Vicki Mendoza Diagonal more than a few times, but at peak she was one hell of a singer.

Was thinking recently about what is the most recent of the truly iconic trappings of Christmas -- movies, songs, TV programs, whatever else of pop culture. "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is a contender.

EDIT: Though I think the more recent movie Elf is pretty well cemented in the canon.

My list might end being kind of basic, but when it comes to the holidays, I like the classics. It's like comfort food. Pure nostalgia.

Round 2. Bing Crosby- White Christmas

Doesn't get more classic than that.

As classic as a perfectly roasted, juicy turkey and a side of fluffy, buttery mashed potatoes for a holiday dinner.

Perfect song for a December night where the house lights are off and the Christmas tree lights are on.

Don't have time to look into it now, but there's a long (and original) version of this song with an extra verse ... I have always wondered if Crosby has ever done the long version?
Crosby's original version from the 1942 movie "Holiday Inn" features a duet with co-star Marjorie Reynolds.  The extra verse is exclude because it wouldn't make sense in the context of the setting.

The film also includes a blackface number that sometimes gets edited out of television broadcasts.

And then it got its own movie, "White Christmas". It's the best selling single of all time. It wasn't a huge success right away but was really pushed forward by the soldiers radio stations where it was requested nonstop. It's the only single to top the charts 3 different times (holidays of 45-47). Also the version we hear is the 47 re-recording because the original was copied so much that it was damaged.

When Berlin wrote the song, he told people he just wrote the greatest song ever written. He was probably right.

White Christmas is such a simple song, especially without the seldom performed Beverly Hills LA section.  It's just verse / verse / identical verse.  There are only three or four chords and about 50 words.  Berlin was an extremely prolific songwriter with over 900 published songs.  It probably didn't take him an afternoon to write and has made generations of his heirs rich.

ETA:   One hour clock Wednesday 10 - 8 EST.  We're making good progress with a great variety of classics and deeper cuts.  I just want to keep the thread on the first page.

I was considering The Pogues but figured it wouldn't make it to me (or make it past simey if I skipped it here). I'm going to pick off another one of the mandatory songs here, I'm surprised this doesn't show up on the 538 list of most played Christmas songs, so maybe it's the Canadian content laws that make me hear it so often but it is my favourite version of it (maybe because it's become so ingrained?)

2.12 - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - Barenaked Ladies (f/Sarah Mclachlan)

Sharon Jones died a couple weeks ago of cancer, and I'm so glad I got to see her live two years ago. She and the Dap Kings put on such a great show. RIP

2.13 - Please Come Home For Christmas - Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings  (Pop standard 1900-1963)

I've drafted this song before, but it wouldn't be a Christmas mix for me if it wasn't included.

3.01 - Merry Christmas from the Family - Robert Earl Keen (Novelty song)  :suds:

Would have been my next pick.
Got to briefly meet them a few weeks ago backstage while working at a festival they were headlining.  Nothing too deep or substantial - told them I'd been a fan since Gordon (was living in Minnesota when "If I Had A Million Dollars" broke out, so I was pretty much Canadian at the time), and we spoke of our mutual love of brisket.  Much like the stereotype, they were laid-back and friendly.  And they put on a great show mixing their own material, some freestyle rap, their usual silly pop medley, and an energetic encore where Ed played drums and Tyler sang lead vocal of a few punk and classic rock covers.

3.05 - cos - OTC

3.06 - ilov80s - skip

3.07 - Scooby - skip

3.08 - Juddzilla

3.09 - Doug

3.10 - Eephus

I'll be afk for a couple hours.. skip away

Then cosjobs picked, and JZilla asked for a skip. Does that mean I am OTC right now? I am seeing other picks being recently made by other people, but can't tell (without round/pick numbers) whether or not the recent picks are in sequence.

yes, go.

I, for one, much prefer pace to exact order. But I don't think anyone else would take my picks, so its not a big deal

You're up.  Scooby picked and Zilla is AFK

There's been some challenge in balancing the mandatories with the gotta-haves. In that, this draft has been well-conceived

Another gotta-have wins this round -- for the Rock Era Originals category ...

3.09: "I Believe in Father Christmas" - Greg Lake

Gotta post this video, too ... man, one day I want to go to church and for the priest to say "Oh yeah, Greg Lake and Ian Anderson are here to do a number ..." :excited:

This is probably way too early but the Tim Minchin pick got me worried that someone else has a Southern Hemisphere scouting department

3.10 - "How to Make Gravy" - Paul Kelly - sad/depressing/anti-Christmas

Wherein the great Australian songwriter paints a vivid, realistic picture of family and friends gathering for the holidays and laments how he's missing it because he's in jail.
